_un BOX HOUSE
This project consists on a renovation of an apartment built in the early seventies. Both the distribution and the construction materials were deeply outdated and in bad conditions.
The goal was designing a timeless space which could be adaptable for different potential inhabitants, from single young people to consolidated couples.
From an architectural perspective, the first step consisted on the removal of the walls and original programmatic plan. Since the structural system was based on concrete pillars and beams, every squared of the grid was initially occupied by a room.
Once the open floor plan was achieved, the intention was creating a single space that could accommodate all the requirements: fully functional kitchen with an island with preparation space and comfortable siting, spa inspired bathroom, open clothing storage, office area and outdoor space.
Therefore, a squared box is placed as a privacy threshold. This area is equipped with two bathrooms -one with bad and another one with rain shower- and a dresser/corridor that communicates both sides of the apartment. The lighting and the construction materials are carefully chosen to create a spa-inspired atmosphere.
Another key step is the exchange of outdoor space: the squared meters from the kitchen gallery become part of the interior space, while these same squared meters are given into the main area terrace, keeping the original balance.
In order to create a timeless industrial design, the original concrete structure has been recovered and intentionally included as conversational pieces. Therefore, every pillar is illuminated by a dimmable spotlight recessed in the ceiling.
The material chosen for the flooring consist on ceramic tiles with a matt finish in various shades of grey. The big format of these elements (60 x 120cm) and the samecoloured joints between the tiles, capture the observer’s eye, creating a continuous movement that connects every space in the apartment.
_anton SMART in
Located in one of the main axes of Madrid Old City, Anton Martin Square is a strategic place, which allows overlapping uses in the building. Therefore, the different architectural typologies weave among each other in three dimensions and colonize the immediate urban environment through synergies. The architecture is able to enable a conversation within the city and its inhabitants, offering new ways of interaction and connection in the neighbourhood.
This project proposes various complementary uses: in one hand, the “Street” Market and the School of Flamenco are related to the more traditional atmosphere in this part of the city; on the other hand, the Eating Disorders Clinic and the Co-Working Space, are the answer to more contemporary requests.
Understanding architecture as a tool to generate new activities, transforms this part of the urban tissue in a smart node, this way, Anton Martin Square becomes Anton SMARTin.
_cajon DE SASTRE
This project is conceived from continuity, both programmatic and related to the neighbourhood atmosphere.
This part of the city is extremely dense, even crowded. Most of the houses could be considered as slum. Such perspective drives us to a proposition of a higher building, one that can exist on top of the chaos and condensation that take place around this spot.
In this proposal, the architecture is designed from the structure and the programmatic requirements. Another starting point is the dialog between two concepts: domestic and urban. In this scenario, domestic is referred to a space that does not content anything out of the routine.
Meanwhile, urban is the common place of people with nothing else in common. Following this direction, the level of privacy is regulated through a series of programmatic thresholds.
_alfama RE GENERATIONS
The project consists on a nursing home in Alfama, a neighbourhood located in Lisbon old city, Portugal. The streets layout echoes the Islamic ancient settlement, an area characterized by intricate alleys and steep slopes.
The proposal consists on a hive of living modules. The inhabitants can enjoy a more private space along with shared facilities and common meeting areas with different atmospheres, which enable the relationships among them in the way of family constellations. Meanwhile, in order to reactivate the neighbourhood, an atomized programme colonizes public open spaces along with empty stores and small businesses. Therefore, instead of a building, a permeable grid is placed over this part of the city.
Privacy vertical thresholds are used as a way to organize the circulation. In the ground floor, a public open square, connected to the main road, generates a node and a meeting place in the neighbourhood. In the upper levels, the corridors turn wider, creating meeting areas in the form of living spaces with a certain level of privacy and a domestic character. Inside the living modules, both single and shared bedrooms can be found, offering different ways of living for the inhabitants of the nursery.
_blow.up BLOW.UP BLOW.UP
In a valley that connects two of the most polarized neighbourhoods in Uruguay, both from an economic and social perspective, the proposal is a bridge that may work as an activity generator and a meeting point.
Besides the coworking offices, the library and the cafeteria, the project includes sportive installations sitting over the landform which sew the different programmes. This architecture allows the addition of now capsules, such as self-constructed living modules.
The title is “Blow-up” as a reference of Michelangelo Antonioni’s movie. Therefore, just as Thomas, the photographer, makes multiple blow-ups of the film of two lovers in the park, different architectural elements are scaled and reorganized in order to generate this project direction.
_energy LAND SCAPES
The starting point is an energetically efficient architecture. The main environmental and climate restrictions are stablished by the location, the city of Chicago, and the proximity of the Lake Michigan.
This building consists of three main elements: the programmatic ramp, the shell and the inner lake. The first one allows the organization of the different activities that take place according to a thermic gradient. The shell, the external skin, is covered with multiple filaments that vaporize water coming from the inner lake.
During the coldest months, the vaporized water will form an iced shield around the building, isolating the interior as if it would be an iglu. When this extra layer is no longer required, the ice will melt and the remaining water can be filtered and returned into to the inner lake or the Lake Michigan. In periods of warmer temperatures, the outer skin can be open due to generate air currents. This alongside vaporized water will enable the climatic comfort inside.
It is also remarkable the way the architecture is perceived in the landscape. Looking as an organic sculpture, the skyline from the lake will change seasonally, originating short of a snowed mountain during winter and a cloud in summer. Meanwhile, when the temperature outside fits the requirements in the interior, an intricated, but light triangled structure will be seen.
_surf IN
This project consists on a camping for the surf community in Puntapaloma Beach, located in Cadiz, Spain. Considering the seasonal character of this settlement, the architecture response is based on drop down modules.
The envelope of each tent can be deployed describing a circle around the main post, which also contains the installations that serve the living module. The floor adopts different highs in order to create visual separations of the otherwise continuous space inside each tent. Green walls protect the camping from the strong winds typical in this area. Therefore, the tents are partially buried. The settlement is completed with common facilities that remain open all year long with complementary programmes.
