est known for playing bossy Hermione Granger (and earning the equivalent of $32 million Canadian in the process, making her Hollywood’s highest-paid actress), Watson has grown from a frizzy-haired 10-yearold kid in oversized sweaters into a chic, fashion-forward young woman. She sported a new, short pixie cut in the red carpet for the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 on Friday and made the front page of all the London papers the next morning. “Bewitching,” one headline read. “Em’s black magic,” said another, a nod to the figure-hugging, black lace minidress with inky feathered hem that Watson wore with such confidence. “Thank you. Thanks very much,” Watson told the Star graciously when complimented on her new look. Upbeat and chatty, with gorgeous skin and minimal makeup, the slim Watson wore tight black leggings tucked into high black boots and a lacy black top by Italian designer Alberta Ferretti (more on that later), her trim waist encircled by a brown belt with a chunky buckle. Now a student at the Ivy League Brown University in Providence, R.I., Watson has made a clear break from the little girl she played onscreen in the Potter movies. While fellow cast members Daniel Radcliffe, 21, (Potter) and Rupert Grint, 22, (who plays Ron Weasley) have also moved into adulthood, Watson’s blossoming is most evident.

The world is at her feet

he movie also sees her character step up with an easy confidence and calm maturity, instead of Hermione’s younger self who tended toward being a knowit-all. This Hermione really does know it all and Harry and Ron acknowledge that. She helps the trio survive life in the outdoors with a magical bottomless satchel that has everything inside, right down to a tent. The new Hermione on screen is echoed in the new-look Watson off-screen. The most dramatic change is her hair, snipped into a sexy cap in New York in August, about two months after she finished a gruelling 263-day shoot on both parts of The Deathly Hallows. “I kind of knew I’d get stick (given a hard time) for it and that’s why I didn’t tell anyone I was going to do it. I didn’t tell anyone,” she says, stretching out the last word. “I just went and had it done and then waited for people’s after reaction.” Her inspiration for the new look wasn’t, as you might imagine, fellow Brit actor Carey Mulligan, who sports a similar ’do, but an actress from another era. “I took a picture of Mia Farrow to the hairdresser and I said ‘I want to look like this,’” said Watson. The photo would have been of Farrow around the time of making horror classic Rosemary’s Baby in 1968. Watson did tell one person she was thinking of snipping off her long locks, but when she told her father “I want to cut it all off; I want to have short hair and do something different,” her dad had another actress in mind. “He was, ‘Don’t get carried away. You’re not Audrey Hepburn yet!’ ” There’s no doubt that Watson is a young woman who knows what she wants — whether it’s a new hairstyle or a desire of make a difference in the world. Of the cast, she was the most hesitant to stay with the franchise. The actors had signed on for two movies, with two options to continue. But their contracts were up while they were making The Order of the Phoenix in 2006 and Watson hesitated to continue. “It was really a question of her rationalizing her work on the film with her education,” added Potter producer David Barron. “That was always a strong commitment of hers.” Watson always

intended to go to university and started studying history at Brown in 2009. The crew deliberately worked around Watson on the 263-day shoot, not wanting to jeopardize her crucial first semester. She returned to the set on school breaks. So how did it work for her to do both the movie and study? “It doesn’t really. I’m not going to lie,” Watson said. “I kind of had to work really hard when I’m there and just earn my professors’ respect and trust that I am hard-working and I take it seriously and I will come up with the goods somehow.” The challenges of her situation have translated on the screen, observed director David Yates, adding not only did Watson deliver a mature performance, he has never seen her so happy. “There were days when I was in tears; more than anything, being cold and wet takes so much energy out of you and trying to give a good performance when you are just miserable,” said Watson. “I was begging with (David) some days and he just said, ‘It just looks so much better that you look so vulnerable.’ It worked, but there were days when I wanted to kill him.” It’s clear that while Watson was sad to see the end of the film franchise that was such a huge part of her life, she has her eye on the future. “I keep trying to (say goodbye to Hermione) but she keeps finding a way back into my life,” she said with a smile. “I still have two movies left to promote. It’s a very gradual goodbye and I am being eased out of it nicely, gently.” As for the reshoots, planned for Christmas when Watson is on a break from Brown, she’ll wear a wig. She’s also sporting a wig for her next movie, which she was shooting in London this month. My Week With Marilyn stars Michelle Williams as the famous blond actress, set in 1957 London when Monroe shot The Prince and the Showgirl there.

The premiere was for a movie about a boy wizard but the one making all the magic was 20-year-old Emma Watson

Her enthusiasm for what lies ahead relates to both school and work. She seems at ease with college life and was happy to audition, twice for the same role, in the school production of Chekov’s Three Sisters. (She got the part.) She has her eye on doing Shakespeare. Besides being the face of British fashion house, she is passionate about fashion, but even more so about where the clothing comes from and how it’s produced, something embraced while in school and studying third-world geopolitics and the garment industry. She quotes facts and figures about the lack of organic materials in the clothing industry and wonders why people are so concerned about the ethics and origins of what they eat, but not about what they wear. “I will put it out there I will work for anybody for free if they are prepared to make their clothing free trade and organic,” she declared. Watson’s purposeful statement sounds like the kind of challenge the very clever Miss Granger might say in the world of Harry Potter. Has Hermione influenced her? “I’m sure she has. This (movie) is the closest Hermione to my own personality. Definitely, I have really enjoyed that,” she said. “David (Yates) wanted a really honest performance and it was really nice to play. Earlier on I played more like a parody of myself and now she has developed into something much more human.”

who’s WHO

Leighton Meester Leighton Meester has a hot boyfriend, an upcoming album, and a budding movie career. We reveal that she is SO not a bitch...!

L

Leighton’s childhood didn’t start off comfortable or happy. Her mother had her while serving a prison sentence in Texas for drug trafficking. Her grandmother took care of her on Marco Island, Florida, until her mom was able to join them several months later. “My mom lived through a lot before I was born, and I can’t judge her on that,” Leighton says. “She and my dad are good people.” Then she rolls her eyes, obviously used to telling this story, and smiles. “Look, I could’ve turned out a lot worse.” From a very young age, Leighton knew she wanted to act. “I watched a lot of TV, and it clicked one day that these people were acting,” she says. “It sounded like the most fun thing ever.” So she started doing local plays when she was 9 and then met a manager who encouraged her to move to New York to try out for bigger gigs. After several years and minor roles on shows like House and Entourage, she landed Blair. It wasn’t due to luck. Turns out, the creators of the show had had their eyes on Leighton for some time.

18

“She has a great combination of intelligence, wit, and strength but also this mischievous quality,” says Gossip Girl executive producer and writer Stephanie Savage. “Leighton’s very matterof-fact and up front about things, and unlike Blair, she’s nonjudgmental.” Blair is unquestionably the villain viewers root for: ditched by her dad, screwed up by her mom, and in a torturous will-they-or-won’t-they relationship with gigantic a-hole Chuck Bass. Ed Westwick, who plays Chuck, really cuts to the chase when discussing his costar. “Leighton plays such a good bitch because she is one,” he says. What follows is a silence so awkward, we actually start to sweat — until he bursts out laughing. “I’m joking! She’s so good at it because she has fun with it.” Boy, the Gossip Girl cast are quite the kidders. Leighton fully understands why viewers have become fixated on the love affair between Blair and Chuck. “They’re so perfect because they get each other. Chuck knows about her deep, dark side, and he finds it hot,” she says, spearing a bite of creamy rigatoni and peas. “But the best part of their relationship is that it’s realis-

tic. People don’t always date for a while and then slowly fall in love. They start by hooking up one night. It takes time to get to know someone, and then you realize that you’re in love later on.”

DEAL MAKERS, NOT DEAL BREAKERS

While Leighton remains tight-lipped about her boyfriend of about a year, actor Sebastian Stan, who plays Carter Baizen on Gossip Girl and stars on NBC’s Kings, she does admit that Chuck Bass isn’t her type. “I’m not into bad boys. I think the term is stupid,” she says with Blair’s blunt delivery. “A guy who cheats on you or is not nice to you? What is that?” She has an equally straightforward idea of what she does want: “Nowadays, I’m much more mature in relationships. I’ve let go of the bullshit. I think more about the deal makers than the deal breakers. I want a guy I can look up to.”So we have to ask: Is Leighton in love now? She looks cagey before answering. “I haven’t been in a lot of relationships, but I’ve been in love. There’s an inexplicable chemistry. You just really, really want to, like, stare at the person.” She laughs as her face flushes, and she bites her lip as if she’s both eager and reluctant to go on. “I’ve never fallen in love right off the bat. I get scared to say I love you too soon because it means so much. It means you’re not seeing an end to things.” So those engagement rumors about her and Sebastian? Totally false, she assures us. These days, Leighton’s filming her first starring role, in the flick The Roommate, out next year, and focusing on her as-yet-untitled album, which she describes as “quirky, electric pop.” (If you’re curious to hear how she sounds, check out her cover of “Bette Davis Eyes” on YouTube.) “I never pursued it seriously until this year,” she admits. “I was making music, but I didn’t see a future in it.” And despite having fun recording, she’s in no hurry to get it out there. “The only person pressuring me is myself, and right now, I have a lot of things going on,” she says.
