Keeping Calm And Carrying On! Unless you have lived off grid for the past 6 months you’ll be aware that the latter part of 2019 was dominated by Brexit and the General Election that followed. We were hopeful that the election just before Christmas would bring clarity but whatever your views, few of us expected such a dominant shift to a strong majority. Markets like certainty and the local property market reacted immediately. Despite the election being a little over a week before Christmas, in December we agreed sales on an astonishing 40% more properties than December 2018 and even higher for lettings at 44% more properties let. First time buyers, fundamental to the market as they allow the rest of a property chain to move, came back in droves 2019. Whilst the ‘Bank of Mum & Dad’ was part of that, Government initiatives such as the Help To Buy deposit scheme, scrapping of Stamp Duty on first purchases and longer mortgage terms to help keep payments low have also played a major part. In fact around 25% of buyers registered at Beresfords branches at the moment are first purchasers. Demand for Essex properties from those living in or closer to London also continues to be a vital source of buyers and tenants for those with properties further out into the county especially because of its connectivity to London. And we have yet to see the practical benefits of Crossrail (or the Elizabeth Line as we must remember to call it). With the recent opening of our latest branch in Harold Wood, we now have offices at all four Elizabeth Line location in Essex, so those areas are certainly hotspots. But other areas in the county are also seeing the benefits as so many of people looking further out are from that part of Greater London and its fringes with Essex. In all we have 16 ‘high street’ offices along the A12 corridor and on average over 60% of their buyers and tenants are from close to the capital. Add to that strong local demand from people moving within each area and you can imagine how many people we have looking for property at the moment. It can’t be underestimated how popular Essex is for those outside the UK too. At the moment Essex properties on our website are being viewed by people from nearly 90 countries across the world with the US, Germany and France being in the ‘Top 10’. If there is one figure that sums up confidence more than any other though it is that we are currently achieving 98% of property asking prices. So for all the recent trials and tribulations we have experienced, the local property market remains very strong, especially with London buyers looking at moving to Essex. So, if you’re thinking of selling or already on the market, why not pop into your local branch and have a chat about how we can help you.

W
The third generation Flying Spur is a showcase for Bentley’s contemporary sculptural design language, while bearing the hallmarks of the Crewe-based company’s unique DNA. Built on an entirely new platform, its athletic stance benefits from the front axle being moved forward to extend the wheelbase. The elegant, muscular proportions, especially at the rear, are highlighted through the marque’s latest generation cut-crystal effect LED matrix headlamps and new wrap-around rear lamps incorporating ‘B’ motifs. Stylish new 21 and 22-inch wheel designs further enhance the Flying Spur’s personality and prowess.
18 | Essex Homes & Style
For the first time on a modern-day Flying Spur, the retractable Bentley ‘Flying B’ mascot is proudly displayed on the nose of the new model. Electronically operated, it rises from beneath a beautifully modern Bentley badge. Inside the sumptuous cabin, the design lines flow from the new wing-themed fascia to connect the front and rear passenger areas and create a completely integrated style. The interior is unmistakably Bentley, incorporating natural and authentic materials while also embracing a host of new technologies. The unique Bentley Rotating Display is the central feature of an exquisitely crafted dashboard. The HD instrument panel has the choice of 12.3-inch digital touchscreen, beautiful analogue dials, or a digital-detox wood veneer finish. A detachable Touch Screen Remote Control is the centrepiece of the rear seat experience. This state-of-the-art unit can operate all the major functions, including the blinds, climate control and rear seat massage functions. It can also control the Flying Spur’s multi-configuration mood lighting system.
Peerless comfort and refinement in the spacious cabin are enhanced by an extensive list of Single and Dual Veneer wood options. In both front and rear Bentley has introduced completely new-design fluted leather seats, which feature diamond quilting for the Mulliner Driving Specification. Three-dimensional diamond quilted leather doors inserts are a world first. An optional panoramic glass sunroof stretches the full length of the roof, flooding the interior with light and bringing occupants closer to their Grand Touring experience. Three superlative audio systems, including a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen system and a unique, 2,200W Naim system, are also available. The all-new Flying Spur leads the way in the luxury car segment for state-of-the-art technology. Driver assistance systems include a Night Vision infra-red camera, Traffic Assist, Blind Sport Warning and a Head-Up Display. A raft of Advanced Connectivity features, including an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot, help keep the driver in touch with a range of real-time functions and services. Thanks to a totally new and advanced aluminium and composite chassis, the Flying Spur is a technological tour-de-force. Electronic AllWheel Steering is used for the first time in a Bentley, combining with Active All-Wheel Drive and Bentley Dynamic Ride – the world’s first 48V electric anti-roll system - to deliver phenomenal handling and ride. Another major advance comes in the form of new, three-chamber air springs, which offer a much greater range of suspension adjustment between limousine-style ride comfort and sporting levels of body control. It allows the Flying Spur a breadth of capability not seen in the luxury segment before. At the heart of the Flying Spur is an enhanced version of Bentley’s 6.0litre, twin-turbocharged W12, mated to an advanced dual-clutch eight-speed transmission for faster, smoother gear changes. The new TSI engine delivers 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds (0-100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds) and a top speed of 207mph (333 km/h). The all-new Flying Spur is available to order now and customer deliveries will begin in early 2020.

Colchester is on the move
Leading Essex estate agent Beresfords has announced the relocation of its Colchester branch having acquired prime space in the heart of the town’s vibrant High Street. It is the fourth office relocation Beresfords have undertaken in the last 4 years following Gidea Park, Brentwood and Shenfield, a ringing endorsement of the ‘High Street’. The location is just a couple of doors from Colchester’s premier retail store, Fenwicks and as such is in one of the highest footfall locations in town. CEO Paul Beresford commented “We know local people are passionate about their High Street. We are as well because it’s ours too, after all we employ over 200 people across the County, all from Essex. “Why do we relocate offices? The reason is simple. The more visible an estate agent is the more property enquiries you get, the more enquiries you get the more properties you find a buyer or tenant for”.
In addition, Paul points to the importance of their other offices further down along the A12 corridor into London. “Our offices further out into Essex constantly get enquiries from people wanting to move out from nearer London. In fact, at our Colchester branch, over 60% of those looking for property are from outside the local area so combined with our relocation we are confident we are best placed to find the perfect buyer or tenant for our clients”. Previous relocations have seen an immediate and significant increase in phone calls and email enquiries as well as people through the door even when they have just moved a short distance up the road to a footfall hotspot.
Beresfords are now at 145 High Street, Colchester CO1 1PG.
“Why do we relocate offices? The reason is simple. The more visible an estate agent is the more property enquiries you get, the more enquiries you get the more properties you find a buyer or tenant for”.

Sarah Kate Byrne at the Goodwood Revival Goodwood Revival, Goodwood Estate, West Sussex 11-13 September 2020 Goodwood Revival is truly a nonpareil – the only historic motor race meeting where the fashion rules are set to the 1950s and 1960s. Everyone in attendance dons authentic or vintage inspired clothing to witness Grand Prix cars from the same decades speed round the famous Goodwood Circuit. Held in September on the Goodwood Estate, this 3 day festival is truly exceptional and worth planning the perfect costume for. The perfect accessory here is a Series II Land Rover with 1950s capri pants, a 50s French blouse & RayBans and vintage inspired headband by Fernanda Lewis, all combining to create an iconic and authentic look – part Land Girl, part racy mechanic! Photographed by Georgina Preston.
The Season Our Style Guide with Sarah Kate Byrne
arah Kate Byrne has established herself as a hugely in demand fashion stylist specialising in occasion wear, especially around the key horse-racing events such as Royal Ascot as well as events that comprise "The Season". One of her high-profile clients, Francesca Cumani of ITV Racing is regularly cited as a style icon off the back of the looks Sarah creates for her. Her client base tend to be individuals who come to her for her expertise and understanding of what works for these quintessential British social events. Sarah's sartorial flair is reflected in every outfit she selects - for herself as well as for her clients.
S
Recognising there was a gap in the market for an event dedicated to women’s occasion wear, Sarah established “Maison de Saison” - a curated luxury womenswear pop-up devoted to the classic British season. Last May, just in time for Epsom & Royal Ascot she teamed up with the most world’s most exclusive bookmaker, Fitzdares to launch the first iteration of this specialised shopping destination. It featured an edit of fashion, millinery & accessory brands to get race, polo or wedding ready. 2020 promises another London based “Maison de Saison” with plans to take the event outside of London too.
Francesca Cumani at Goodwood Qatar Goodwood Festival, Goodwood, West Sussex 28 July-1 August 2020 Francesca Cumani is the face of British racing. Her innate knowledge of the Sport of Kings is unrivalled & thus dressing her for each of her 80+ engagements for ITV Racing is no mean feat with each occasion demanding a bespoke look. Pictured here at Glorious Goodwood in a Jess Collett hat, Swarovski jewellery & a 1950’s dress from Pret-a-Vintage, this striking look made it onto the front page of The Times. Goodwood is a more playful race meeting than Royal Ascot with no real rules on dressing - 'informal elegance' is the mantra. King Edward VII once described Goodwood as a "garden party with racing tacked on” so take this as your inspiration when choosing your look.

Sarah Kate Byrne at Royal Ascot Royal Ascot, Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire 16-20 June 2020 The world-famous Royal Ascot meeting is the jewel in the crown of “the British Season”. Attendees flock from all over the world to join the foray into the “Royal Enclosure” in the hope of glimpsing the Queen at close quarters. Pomp and ceremony are order of the day throughout this meeting with the Royal Procession a highlight. Top notch horse-racing vies for attention against the myriad champagne bars and five day fashion parade. This was a last-minute look - the beautiful Sarah Cant hat arrived just in time & paired impeccably with a 1950s pastel silk dress, contemporised with a Luisa Spagnoli belt and vintage necklace. Pastel perfection and a perfect British summers day to boot. Photographed by Georgina Preston.

Sarah Kate Byrne at Epsom The Investec Derby Festival, Epsom Downs Racecourse, Surrey 5-6 June 2020 Epsom Derby is Britain's richest horse race and the most prestigious of the five Classics. For the Oaks and Derby, the fashion stakes are high and tend to set the bar ahead of Royal Ascot two weeks later. Sartorially there is an unofficial preference for black & white at Epsom (this has crept in perhaps from Australia where it is demanded). Following trends though should never be a dictum when choosing one’s outfit. Rather opt for something timeless, elegant and head-turning for the right reasons. A vintage 1980s hat with Zara scarf pinned on is paired with a vintage 1990s blouse & vintage 1950s skirt. A modern take on Dior’s New Look which garnered alot of attention.
Sarah Kate Byrne - Ladies Day at Royal Ascot Royal Ascot, Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire 16-20 June 2020 Ladies Day at the Royal Ascot meeting takes place on the Thursday and the fashion stakes are high. Vivid colours and florals are sure to stand out from the crowd and this ensemble did just that. A Martha Lynn hat offset the florals of an Opening Ceremony top & vintage shocking pink skirt. Larger hats ooze elegance if worn with confidence and the ankle length hemline of the skirt demanded a headpiece with height and drama – the roof to one’s sartorial house. That said, decisions on millinery should be considered – for television for Francesca, no large brims for example; while for mere mortals ones luncheon plans and the weather should dictate the size of one’s brim.
Sarah is available for private styling appointments on styling@maisondesaison.com or you can sign up to her mailing list on www.sarahkatebyrne.com/contact to hear about 2020 dates for ‘Maison de Saison’

Women in Business Women’s networking events, charity food bank appeals, gala balls and award winning marketing campaigns it has been all systems ago at Beresfords property Group. Established in 1968 by Eileen and Reg Beresford as a single office practice, the company now spans 16 branches, 23 departments and divisions as well as recent diversification into other property related areas, one particular arm being Cotswold holiday cottages, aptly named ‘Countryside Breaks’. Traditionally a male centric industry, Eileen was a pivotal force in driving the business to what it has become today. Breaking down barriers continues with Beresfords recent appointments of two senior members of staff: Nicki Treffers and Sam O’Sullivan who have been promoted to Director of marketing and new Business and Group resources respectively. In addition to this, The Beresfords marketing team have established some exciting women’s networking events to echo the theme. Group Marketing Director, Nicki Treffers said ‘To be promoted to Director was such a huge achievement for me and I know Sam O’Sullivan too. More and more women are coming up the ranks and changing how companies to business for the better. The team and I host a variety of mixed events, but we had never done anything specifically for women, so we thought it would be a really exciting idea. We wanted to create an environment whereby women felt comfortable attending alone and could connect with likeminded females. The first we hosted at John Lewis, as a fashion show and late not shopping evening with an element of networking, it was such a success that we have made it a monthly event, this time however it is hosted in the afternoon with bottle Bureau, we lay on with nibbles and drinks.
“It’s fabulous when you see a room of successful women of all ages, engaging and increasing their professional networks, it makes the job really worthwhile.”

Dinner by Heston A look at Dinner by Heston at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London Dinner London began in 2011 with Heston Blumenthal’s fascination with historic gastronomy. The savoury ice creams of the late 1800s, the theatre of the Tudor dining experiences and the dishes of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland all resonated with his unique approach to cooking. Dedicated to the modern day discovery and evolution of dining he realised that the excitement and obsession with food is no new modern day phenomena. Heston created a menu that takes those discoveries and fascinations of history into a new and evolving modern dining experience. Researching 14th century cookbooks such as those by the royal chefs of King Richard II to Lewis Carroll’s flights of fancy.

contemporary and innovative, yet mindful of tradition. The dining room features floor-to-ceiling glass walls, giving diners a view of the kitchen and its unique pulley system. Modelled after a version used by the royal court, the pulleys rotate the spit over an open-fire. The ivory-painted walls are decorated with custommade porcelain wall sconces in the shape of antique jelly moulds and of course the uninterrupted views of Hyde Park brings the connection to history full circle.

“It is never easy naming a restaurant. On this occasion, I wanted something that represented our menu that is inspired by historic British gastronomy, so I searched for a name that had a bit of history, but was also fun. In the past, the main meal – dinner - was eaten at midday, before it got too dark. But affordable candles and, later, gaslight saw dinner shift. By the mid-1800s people were dining later. People working in the cities were taking a 'lunch' to work and having their main meal at 5.00pm when they got home, while in rural areas the main meal was still taken at midday. Even today, depending where you are in the British Isles, 'dinner' might be served at lunchtime, suppertime or, indeed, dinnertime! This made 'Dinner' the natural choice for its typically British quirky history and linguistic playfulness. If nothing else, I hope it's easy to remember. - Heston Blumenthal
