Welcome We are delighted to bring you the latest edition of Essex Homes & Style magazine. This edition is packed with the best properties Essex has to offer together with an eclectic range of lifestyle articles ranging from fashion and beauty, home and garden to the arts and culture. This magazine comes to you following one of the busiest summers in the property market that we have seen for a number of years. Our sales offices have been agreeing nearly 3,000 property viewings and 220 property sales per month whilst our lettings branches have seen the number of lets agreed rise by nearly 10%. But if you are looking for a statistic that really sums up how buoyant the Essex property market has been over the summer and autumn, we have 10 people looking for every property currently on the market! Whilst the Government Help to Buy scheme has undoubtedly been a factor, talking to our colleagues in other parts of the country it is clear that the underlying trend in Essex is far stronger than most other areas. That is not altogether surprising bearing in mind our proximity to London and even more importantly, our direct commuter links in to the City which are far better than any of the other Home Counties. This makes Essex the ideal location for those wanting to move further out, whether it be into the county’s commuter areas, its rural towns or villages, which are still within easy commuting distance of the City, and soon thanks to Crossrail, into the centre of London itself. It isn’t a new trend, in fact it’s been occurring for centuries.Today however, with lifestyle being such an important consideration and technology allowing so many more of us to work, and even run businesses, from home it is probably more relevant than ever, especially when you take into account the value for money Essex offers. Statistically, a generation ago around 30% of people looking for property in Essex were moving out from closer to London. However, today we have found those figures have risen on average to around 50% with more and more people looking in central and north Essex coming up from our offices further south in the county and into Greater London. For estate agents such as ourselves with branches across the county from the Suffolk borders down to inside the M25, 21st century technology means that we can tap into that out of area demand and vastly increase the number of people we can market a property to. And of course, because of the significantly higher sale and rental prices closer to London, Essex not only becomes a good lifestyle choice but also

SALES Country Homes | (01245) 397 475 a sound financial proposition whether it’s to those people looking for a bigger or better property, or those looking to downsize. So what does the future hold for the Essex property market? No-one can ever foretell what outside factors will affect markets. With the economy improving and growing confidence, the local property market continues to perform well and although we have a good choice of new homes available for sale across the county, this is still falling far short of the new build targets set by the Government. Therefore, in the strong commuter areas we cover up to Colchester and beyond, demand is still outstripping supply in most locations. We continue to be confident and fully committed to the Essex property market and have certainly shown this with our recent expansion in the county. Last year, we acquired the long-established business of Foxton Hayes in Great Dunmow, a rapidly expanding area because of its proximity to Stansted. This strengthened our coverage and network in the west of the county and earlier this year, we took over another lettings business in one of Britain’s fastest growing towns, Colchester, which further reinforces our presence in the huge area that covers. I am also pleased to announce that by the time you read this, our latest branch in Maldon will have opened, continuing our measured growth and widening even further our marketing base for our sales, lettings, new homes and country homes divisions. I really hope that you enjoy reading this edition of Essex Homes & Style. If you would like your home featured in the next edition, or you just want an up to date idea of your property’s value in the current market, please give us a call. Our branch contact details are listed opposite and if you call us, you can be assured that we do what we do best; sell and rent properties effectively, efficiently and ethically.

London links Why property marketing isn’t just local

L 26

ike other Home Counties, a lot of people currently living, and looking to live, in Essex have their origins in London and its suburbs. This migratory pattern is nothing new; in fact, it goes back centuries to carriages and even pilgrimages. Over time, people have followed the road and rail links out of the metropolis to get away from one of the world’s busiest cities to enjoy a more peaceful lifestyle. A significant proportion of people living in Essex can trace their family roots to London, particularly the East End. Now, with employment opportunities in the City being what they are, commuters can get the best of both worlds and travel back into London from surrounding areas. To many, moving to Essex opens up a whole new world of choice. If you still want the buzz of living in an urban environment, you can live in a major town such as Colchester, or in one of the UK’s newest cities, Chelmsford. At

the same time, you could live in a quintessential English village, a rural retreat, or in one of Essex’s many coastal towns, with the county said to have the longest coast line in the UK.. The popularity of Essex for those commuting to the City cannot be underestimated. In most of Beresfords offices, around 50% of property seekers registered are from nearer London. However, in some villages such as Writtle, where they also have a branch, nearly 80% are from outside the immediate area. This is probably down to the fact that nowhere has the direct access into the City – the financial capital of the world – and the ‘second City’ in Docklands, which Essex has. Access into London will be improved even further when the £15bn Crossrail scheme is up and running in 2018. Its Eastern hub will be in Shenfield, just down the road from one of Beresfords’ branches. In fact, they have nine branches within a ten mile radius of Shenfield station, which will be

EXCLUSIVE

the first part of the line to have the new Crossrail rolling stock in 2017. This means that instead of having to change from the mainline to the Tube to get across London, you will be able to travel direct into the West End, Heathrow Airport, and beyond into Berkshire. One of the major advantages of using Beresfords if you are selling or renting your property, is that no other estate agent has the combination of branch locations within the A12 corridor, which also includes the main railway line out of London into East Anglia. Beresfords tap into this out of area demand by having the latest software allowing branches further out in Essex direct and instant access to buyers and tenants from their other offices closer to London. Many of those property seekers may not have considered moving to Essex, but when they see examples of the type of sales and rental properties available and the value it represents being further away from London, this is

often enough to encourage them to consider other areas. When it comes to those locations further out from London, Beresfords website is an invaluable research tool. Each of their areas has a professionallyvoiced video, which gives people a flavour of the town or village and its surroundings. There is also useful additional area information online, including commute times and train fares. In fact, every property marketed on Beresfords website has its own school guide, with interactive maps detailing all local schools right down to the Ofsted rating, the pupil to teacher ratio, and even the percentage of pupils where English is not their first language. To put it in a nutshell, consistent migration out of London into Essex has always occurred; today, modern technology means Beresfords can make the most of that demand. If you are a seller or a landlord, this is good news because the more people who see your property, the greater chance you have of achieving the best price, in terms of sale value or rental figure.

Online or offline? The great property marketing debate Why put all your eggs in one basket when you can get the best of both worlds?

Despite having comprehensive online marketing, Beresfords see a ‘high street’ presence and face to face service as just as important.

H

28

ow often have you seen people looking in estate agents’ windows while walking in your town? Having successful sales and lettings branches on the doorstep as well as boards outside properties create a presence within the area and demonstrates an agent’s knowledge of the local market. Estate agency is constantly changing and Beresfords have consistently shown themselves to be completely in tune with the online marketing world, always looking to keep one step ahead of the competition. There’s no better example of this than being the first agents in the country to have their own online tv channel, www.beresfords.tv. Online-only estate agents continue to appear, then often disappear, and it is tempting to think all you need to do to market a property is put it on the internet. However, is it really just about the internet? A recently released report* from the Office of National Statistics shows 86% of the population has internet access. A very high figure, but it means 16%, or around 1 in 6 people, don’t. Most telling however, is that of those who don’t have internet access, for the vast majority it isn’t because of cost or broadband availability, 53% say they just don’t need it. Today, many older people downsize to release cash and supplement their pension; the question is, how many of them are likely to see online as the deciding factor? In fact, the same report shows when it comes to single homeowners over 65, those most likely to downsize, nearly 60% don’t have internet, and a staggering 28% have never even used a computer. So, whilst internet marketing is a vital part of an estate agent’s strategy, we have to accept that for a considerable number of people, it may not be the be all and end all when it comes to marketing their property. There is a realisation amongst homeowners, whether sellers or landlords, that when dealing with your most valuable asset, your home, you want to be comfortable you are using an ethical company with a proven track record in your area. That’s why, despite the leap forward in the internet over the last decade, the vast majority of people still use a local estate agent, whether it’s someone they’ve used before and trust, or someone who has been recommended to them by friends. It’s also probably a company they feel knows their area and their market when it comes to price. Furthermore, it’s likely to be an agent with boards up in their area, giving the owner the comfort of knowing others have chosen that agent and their type of property is in demand. During one of life’s most stressful times, it is important to have people on your doorstep who you can meet face to face, rather than miles away and available only via phone or the internet.

Of course there will always be cheaper options available, many requiring payment up front to companies you’ve never heard of. That’s the problem. If you haven’t heard of them, the chances are buyers or tenants won’t have either. All this isn’t to be in denial about the internet, its use or its benefits. There’s nothing wrong with online property marketing any more than ‘traditional’ estate agency but there’s no reason why homeowners have to choose one or the other when there are estate agents out there such as Beresfords who take the best of both and combine them to give a complete marketing service. The ultimate proof is that some online agents in Essex have now actually opened estate agency offices in the last year or two which answers the question posed earlier ‘Is it just about the internet?’ The answer is clearly no. Similarly, in retail, the importance of a physical outlet is vital. Take the example of Oak Furniture Land. Jason Bannister began selling hardwood furniture on eBay. Five years later, following many phone calls from customers asking whether the company had a showroom, he opened his first store, and now the company boasts 55 outlets around the country. The reason? Consumers like the guarantee of quality they gain by touching a product before they buy it and more importantly, knowing where to go when they need help. In estate agency, the face-to-face element of actually speaking to someone in person provides similar reassurances, allowing the client to evaluate the agent and the standard of service they will receive. When you take into account that Beresfords figures show in many Essex towns around 50% of people looking for property are not from the local area, it’s important to use an agent that has the branch network to capitalise on that out of area demand. Using a wide cross section of marketing, whether it be online, offline or in person, will ensure the widest audience possible is reached, as ultimately, it gives you the best chance of getting the right person for your property at the best price. As such, Beresfords are the perfect example of that crossover between traditional and online estate agents, having been shortlisted for a series of industry awards in 2014, including Online Marketer of the Year where they are competing with online-only agents. When it comes to selling or letting a property there are a large number of estate agents to choose from in any town. If you do nothing else, just ask yourself one question; which agent do I trust to do the best for me by getting the most for my property? *Office for National Statistics, Internet Access - Households and Individuals, 2014

Of particular note is the dual aspect master bedroom that includes a large bath and shower room; both rooms benefit from feature fireplaces. The four remaining first floor bedrooms share the use of a family bathroom and a further family shower room. The outside space is a major feature of Little Bulmer Farm, with a detached annexe or cottage offering office potential, a timber framed barn that could be used for a multitude of purposes and a selection of further outbuildings. A set of arching full height wrought iron gates take you under a wooden pergola adorned by a blend of mature rambling roses and a vine, while lying directly to the rear of the house is the Mediterranean sun terrace, encompassing a series of square and rectangular beds playing home to a variety of specimen plants and shrubs. There is also a productive orchard with fruit trees, including a Victoria plum, two pear trees, apple and damson, and following this is an informal garden centring upon a naturally fed, large, curving pond surround by lilies, reed mace, gunnera and other impressive plants. A further highlight of the garden is an artificial stream bed running from the barn with water tumbling under a bridge made from thick, wooden sleepers. Beyond the garden and up to the side of the valley, there are two large areas of pasture land that lead off to the north. These fields benefit from fine oaks and their own separate access, while offering either an income generated from rental to local farmers, or for the owner to use for their own homesteading. There is also the potential for equestrian facilities. Oozing charm and character and with such a flexible layout, Little Bulmer Farm affords the perfect family home. If you would like to find out more about this stunning country residence, please do not hesitate to contact the Country Homes division at Beresfords.

“Little Bulmer Farm is a fantastic example of just how much house you get for your money in the North Essex region, whilst still benefitting from excellent transport links to the City of London. With excellent private and public schooling also on offer along with boutique hotels, restaurants and shopping opportunities we are experiencing a huge growth in demand for properties in this area of the South East.

Here’s ‘mud in your eye’ to Beresfords and their new Maldon branch

B

eresfords have launched their latest branch in the highly sought after historic waterside town of Maldon. Making it 27 offices and departments across Essex, the new branch is situated in one of the most prominent positions in the town’s High Street and will specialise in sales and lettings as well as having its own resident independent mortgage adviser. The team there will also work closely with Beresfords dedicated Country Homes team in respect of the larger rural and village properties in Maldon’s outlying areas as well as their Land & New Homes Division based nearby. “It’s an exciting time” said Chairman Paul Beresford “and part of our planned expansion into other areas of Essex that complement our existing branch network, especially when it comes to people moving out from closer to London which accounts for around 50% of demand at our other locations. “It’s great to finally see it come to fruition because it’s not just about property to us.

34

“As a company that started in Essex nearly 50 years ago, wherever we have offices we’re part of the community so we’re really looking forward to supporting local charity led initiatives in the Town” Proof that Beresfords have already left their mark in Maldon (or in its mud anyway) comes from some of their team taking part in the quintessentially British annual Maldon Mud Race earlier this year which saw 300 fundraising entrants taking part watched by a crowd of nearly 20,000 visitors. The first Beresfords branch opened in Upminster in 1968 as a single family run office. The business is still privately owned but has since grown substantially and now has branches from Greater London inside the M25 up through Essex to the borders with Suffolk providing the most comprehensive property coverage along the A12 corridor. Although now employing nearly 200 people making it one of the largest truly independent estate agencies in southern England, the whole ethos is still very much that of a family firm with its ethical approach and highly experienced and friendly team.

is micro! The marketplace is now as wide as the world’s online reach, and houses and flats can now be virtually explored through audio, video and images.

Time was, when you were considering buying, selling, renting or letting a property, you could anticipate your estate agent of choice to place a notice in their window, or advertise in the classified section of a newspaper to reach the widest audience. Technological advances have expanded the possibilities property marketing affords. Thanks to the internet, the marketplace is now as wide as the world’s online reach, and houses and flats can now be virtually explored through audio, video and images. And one company is moving forward in the process of rolling out a pioneering approach to the way properties are bought, sold and discovered: the microsite. A first in the world of property marketing, the microsite technology has been developed in-house at the Cambridgeshire headquarters of the Cream Club, a progressive marketing company who specialise in the creation and implementation of online video solutions for a constantlyexpanding client base of independent estate agents around the UK. This innovative aspect of property marketing builds on the success of Cream’s established product line, incorporating online TV channels showcasing professionally-produced video walkthroughs of an agent’s portfolio of properties. These guides still form the heart of the new generation of websites, and are enhanced by an increased element of interactivity.

In addition to sharing the microsite link via Facebook and Twitter, a property seeker can compile a playlist of prospective new homes, search for relevant properties more dynamically, and arrange appointments to view the property. Guides to the local area, and the services the agent provides are also incorporated in each microsite. These form just a part of what has been tailored as a more engaging experience for microsite users; an experience which will continue to evolve with plans in place to implement property postcards, personal photo galleries, 3D floor plans and interaction with high-end brands already in the pipeline. In essence, the lifespan of the microsite will go beyond the transaction. It is anticipated between 200 and 300 agents nationwide will introduce microsite technology over the coming months, with Beresfords among this exclusive group of market-leading and award-winning agents. As one of the prominent exponents of property TV channels, we are looking forward with great anticipation to embracing this new development in online property marketing as part of our high-standard customer service.

Making a statement Barbara Acton-Bond’s handmade jewellery has caught the attention of outlets such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Fortnum and Mason, and Liberty – Gemma Rose discovers how Barbara is inspired to create her unique statement pieces, which incorporate antique elements

S

40

urrounded by an abundance of boxes brimming with stones, jades and pearls in every imaginable colour, and sat in a comfy old chair that has claimed one corner, is where you will find Barbara Acton-Bond devotedly stringing together what will be a beautiful, individual necklace. Every piece receives overwhelming dedication, and each is designed with a great deal of love and imagination in the hope that someone will understand and appreciate it. A necklace will usually take between two and three days to make, but if Barbara is not happy with the way it lays or with its design, she will begin again and again until it is right. Barbara’s unique collection of handmade necklaces has caught the attention of not just fashionable women after something a little different, but also of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Fortnum and Mason, and Liberty.

Barbara explains: “I decided to seek out the buyer at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I walked in wearing one of my necklaces and to my delight she was terribly excited and began stocking me. I decided to do the same thing with Fortnum and Mason’s, and again, they loved what I was wearing and asked me to bring in a number of pieces. Then I was selling there, along with Liberty’s.” Barbara’s story doesn’t start in London. Born near New York and brought up in San Francisco, the jewellerymaker is trained in art history and started out in a very different field – producing, writing and presenting a TV show in the USA. The format involved interviewing either well-known people or other interesting characters about their love of art and antiques, as well as explaining how to use such items in the home.

FASHION AND BEAUTY

Despite the programme proving popular with audiences, she decided that journalism would be her next step in life, wanting to write about art and interview artists, writers and dancers: “Having had no experience in journalism, I nevertheless convinced an international newspaper that I could produce what was required. They hired me and I then learned on the job.” It wasn’t until Barbara and her three young children made the move to Hong Kong years later, just as extraordinary pottery figures were creeping into the antiques market from across the border in China, that she immersed herself in understanding ancient Chinese antiques. Barbara began collecting pieces, referring tourists to safe shops and teaching them about the various historic periods. As well as sharing her knowledge with others, Barbara was so inspired by her surroundings that she decided to experiment: “I saw all these wonderful stones and pieces of jade and I decided I would try my hand at making a Chinese court necklace with a contemporary twist. Basically, I taught myself.” 42

Barbara was captivated by the calmness that the pieces evoked, the attention to detail, the colours and the materials. She began playing with various designs and combinations, and worked on designs for about six months before producing a number of necklaces. Barbara’s experiences in Hong Kong changed her life, and this fierce passion has remained with her ever since: “I am attracted to symbolism and stories associated with Chinese jade. The fact that a pendant actually tells a story and has meaning – and that the symbolism transfers to the wearer.” “I enjoy taking old pieces and mixing them with wonderful stones, colours, shapes and carvings, and adding these with hand-blown glass from China or Venice and then using handmade Fairtrade Thai silver from the Karen Hill tribes, or with vintage Afghan gold on handmade resin. Or even English antique pendants,Victorian garnets, Georgian enamel and Art Nouveau silver.” Having now settled in a London studio near the River Thames, Barbara is still constantly inspired. The design of a necklace can be influenced from art, the past, nature, or just from spotting an appealing colour combination along the riverside.

FASHION AND BEAUTY

It is also the enthusiasm and admiration surrounding her work that drives her to push forward. Customers have referred to the necklaces as works of art and they receive enormous compliments wherever they go. Clients select colours and styles that flatter them and then pick clothes to make the perfect backdrop for their chosen piece. There are some people who own as many as 45 necklaces! Barbara also mentions how they become statement necklaces but never overwhelm the wearer, and how sometimes, a piece of jewellery can give more than just style: “One client told me that she wore one of my necklaces when she went into hospital as it comforted her and made her feel more attractive. I have so many stories and this is what pushes me on.” Sometimes, being the only one in the business and juggling a family of three children (albeit in their 20s) can be tricky. Barbara is responsible for doing the buying, designing, making, writing descriptions, labelling, photographing, updating her website and selling – although having a very supportive and appreciative husband helps hugely.

Barbara also has the assistance of a lovely lady who does the knotting and works as a sort of quality control officer – making sure that no beads have been left out of a design. Barbara continues: “I have a very full life and it is very time consuming, but I take each day as it comes, enjoying the moment and trying to both compartmentalise and integrate my work and life. “Frankly, I feel very fortunate and surprised at how things have developed. I love what I am doing and I imagine that is reflected in what I produce and how I function in my daily routine.” Barbara will be at the Spirit of Christmas Fair on Nov 4th – 9th at Olympia in London. The British Museum also stocks her work, as does her website www.barbara-acton-bond.com. Appointments are available for those interested in trying on Barbara’s jewellery.

Longship legacy Earlier this year, Faith Back visited the British Museum’s blockbuster exhibition, Vikings, Life and Legend, which ran from March to June.

48

EVENTS

H

ow many of us have more than a hazy idea of our Viking heritage? We may think of place name elements such as -by, -thorpe and – thwaite, or recall the story of the destruction of Lindisfarne Monastery on the Northumberland coast, which prompts images of longships carrying bearded raiders with horned helmets (the latter a Romantic fabrication of the 19th century). Older generations may remember the 1958 film Vikings (which still regularly crops up on TV) or Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin’s gentle cartoon about Norsemen, Noggin the Nog. Younger generations may think of the recent Thor film franchise (based on the Marvel comic book version of Norse mythology) and are likely to be well versed in the Vicious Vikings of the Horrible Histories series, both in book and TV. But what were the realities of the Viking Age? So vilified in popular culture have the Vikings been, that recent years have seen a move to persuade us completely away from the image of Vikings as just bloodthirsty barbarians intent on massacre and booty. However, the 2014 exhibition at the British Museum, Vikings, Life and Legend, which opened from March until 22 June, attempted to produce a more balanced, complex and

multi-faceted view, focusing on the heart of the ‘Viking Age’ from 800-1050 AD. The exhibition was the first to be housed in the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery, focused on a most fitting symbol for the Norsemen, and the longest Viking warship ever recovered. As well as the largest, it is also the oldest of some ten or so hitherto unknown wrecks, which came to light during the construction of a new Viking ship museum at Roskilde in Denmark in 1996-7. At 37 metres in length, it goes by the unimaginative name of Roskilde 6. But imagination was not spared at the British Museum, where the remaining fragments of the hull, about 20 per cent of the original ship, were displayed to great effect, as we shall see. The exhibition was of course, about much more than Roskilde 6; you were soon drawn into the Viking mood by the soothing background droning of Norse sagas while viewing the opening displays. These were of relatively small artefacts, which show in an understated way the importance of the longship to Viking society: a small copper alloy brooch in the shape of a stylized ship with a reefed sail, found in Denmark; a coin with a ship motif, also from Denmark; and toy boats found in Germany and Ireland.

EVENTS

The displays moved on to show that while the Vikings of Scandinavia were mainly farming people of Germanic descent, their light, fast, shallow-draft longships with substantial storage space allowed them not only to cross the seas but also to venture far inland via river systems, largely in pursuit of wealth, although geographical curiosity can’t be ruled out. The Norsemen ranged into the Christian Frankish Empire and Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, into Ireland, Scotland and the North Atlantic islands, as well as the lands of the Balts and the Slavs, the Christian Byzantine Empire, and the Islamic world from Spain in the west to Samarkand in the east. These diverse cultural connections are represented by fascinating examples of goods that were indeed stolen and looted, although many were traded too. Other artefacts demonstrated how cultural influences and artistic styles were blended. A beautiful example was the Hunterston Brooch, which was found in Ayrshire, Scotland. This large pre-Viking brooch carries a later inscription on the reverse in Old Norse and in runic script: ‘Maelbrigda’ owns this brooch’ – the name Maelbrigda is Celtic and suggests a fusion of cultures. The development of long-distance trade routes is one of the hallmarks of the Viking Age, which was highlighted by a fragment of silk found in the Viking

Left page: The Vale of York hoard, AD 900s. North Yorkshire, England. Silver-gilt, gold, silver. British Museum, London/ Yorkshire Museum, York. © The Trustees of the British Museum. Right: Lewis Chessmen 1150-1145 © The Trustees of the British Museum

50

trading centre of Dublin; the silk would probably have come via the coinbased economy of the Islamic Caliphate at the western end of the Silk Road to China. The Islamic world also traded in slaves with the Vikings and the Slavs; a slave collar from Dublin served a poignant reminder that the Vikings kept unfree servants, known as thralls. The Vikings operated a bullion economy based on portable ingots rather than coinage. For long distance trading, it was more efficient than bartering. It was a precise system, using mainly portable scales and a variety of weights, including Islamic-style polyhedral and barrel weights. Other weights took the form of highly decorative animal heads filled with lead; it is thought that their individual characteristics helped to prevent traders from fraudulently substituting lighter weights. Bullion could also be carried in the form of silver neck rings and spiral arm rings of standardized weight. This serious accumulation of wealth leaves no doubt that the Vikings liked to strut their stuff if they had it, as the next section of the exhibition clearly showed. The most outstanding piece of bling on display had to be the huge gold torque from Tisso in Denmark, which is 35 cm in diameter.

EVENTS

Excessive cloth was also a symbol of wealth and it seems that Viking males wore baggy breeches gathered at the knee with fancy knee buckles. Sporting all their finery, Vikings knew how to party too. Gathering in their ship-shaped timber halls, banquets and feasts full of ritual and ceremony would be held to cement friendships, real or political. There would be music and speeches, and the recitation of poems composed in honour of guests, while board games might also be played. Fascinating items relating to the Viking court included an oaken gallon-size communal drinking bucket, and a rare wooden tray with Scandinavian decoration. The sound of the sea brought you back to thoughts of longships, and as you approached the next gallery, a quote from an Icelandic poet adorned the wall ahead: ‘See where the long-sided warship lies, splendid, off the shore.’ And then you turn and see it – a colossal but graceful metal skeleton, which recreated the warship in its original shape and size, set against a large screen on the gallery’s far wall showing an expanse of moving open sea. An impressive sight, despite the fact that it had no carved prow or stern, only dark-oak bottom timbers and a keel. Dendrochronology tells us that the trees were felled around the year 1025 near Oslo Fjord.

There were also an assemblage of skulls and human skeletons. Victims of a longship raid perhaps? Not so. On reaching ground floor level, you discovered that these represent approximately 50 Scandinavian men who were buried near Weymouth in the early 11th century; bearing no signs of a struggle, they were probably executed. The Vikings weren’t always on the winning side. However, the Viking influence in the UK was brought home to us in the closing stages of the exhibition by a map showing the distribution of Norwegian-type DNA and Scandinavian place names; it comes as no surprise that the highest percentage of Norwegian DNA is in Shetland at 25 per cent, followed by Northern Ireland at 18 percent. A haunting recording played in the background – a Shetlander talks in English about shipbuilding, the dialect words strongly hinting at Nordic origins. The final display reminded us that one of the most popular regular exhibits at the British Museum is also from our Viking Age past – the iconic Isle of Lewis walrus ivory chess pieces. Vikings, Life and Legend provided me with a rich and vivid picture of their part in our history and culture – and I’m hoping a Viking exhibition lands with equal force on our shores again soon.

A Royal Retreat The 5 star Grand Luxe Villa Padierna Palace sits in the hills of Marbella: a magnificent Palladian splendour in the style of a Tuscan palace that whispers rather than shouts. Created by Englishman Edward Gilbert, architect and master-builder, together with his patron Riccardo Arranz de Miguel, their renaissance collaboration is reminiscent of the Medicis. The hotel draws its exclusive clientele from all parts of the globe, gravitating towards sophisticated grownups and romantics young and old, although there are smatterings of well-behaved children with their parents during the school holidays. Keeping up to Par It is unashamedly a golfer’s resort, with the Flamingos Club leading directly down from the terraces of the hotel. Buggies whizz past on the velvety green that is literally on the doorstep. There’s an odd fascination having breakfast at La Loggia, sipping orange juice whilst watching golfers practising their putts in their primary coloured gear, in contrast to the tranquil stillness of the undulating plains surrounding the silky lake, no doubt full of misguided balls –18 holes, Par 71 men’s handicap 27, women’s 34. The Alferini Club –18 holes, par 73, is much more challenging: suited to top amateurs and professionals. Although the handicaps are stated as the same as the

Flamingos, you would be kidding yourself if you weren’t nearer to scratch. Tramores Club is ideal for beginners and good for practice. A shorter course, Par 63/65, ups the handicap to 48 for both men and women. If you really want to perfect your game, there’s the Villa Padierna Michael Campbell Golf Academy, where the 2005 US Open Champion offers a comprehensive support system for aspiring tour professionals of all ages. The hotel has an hourly shuttle service to its own private beach, Club de Mar: a broad sandy coastal stretch with comfortable loungers, all the trimmings and an excellent bar-restaurant. We are staying in a sumptuous Junior Suite, with a luxurious marble bathroom overlooking the Flamingos golf course. The rooms are furnished in a classical style, with original art and antiques from the owner’s private collection; the hotel boasts 1200 exquisite pieces throughout. There are 130 unique rooms and suites including 9 villas. The Obama Villa, eponymously named after America’s First Lady, Michelle Obama, who visited the VP with her youngest daughter Sasha in 2010, is especially beautiful, with its huge terrace and elegant airy interiors. Guest Daniella Ruchti, a golf-loving reconstructive plastic surgeon, says it’s the ‘VP’s divine symmetry’ that she loves.

The magic of Alnwick The home of the Duke of Northumberland, Grade I listed Alnwick Castle is one of Britain’s most recognisable inhabited castles, being only second in size to Windsor. Famously doubling as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the ‘Harry Potter’ films, and currently being utilised by the cast of ITV’s ‘Downton Abbey’, Antony Sore takes a look inside this iconic building.

60

HOME AND GARDEN

A

s family homes go, Alnwick Castle is quite an impressive dwelling. Occupied by the illustrious Percy family for over 700 years, the current Duke of Northumberland, Ralph Percy opens his home to the public for seven months of the year; while the Duchess has overseen the establishment of the adjacent Alnwick Garden and its famous poison garden. Being instantly recognisable as the school of Harry Potter, has led to an increase in public interest - Alnwick currently boasts visitor numbers in excess of 800,000 per year. The castle itself dates back to Norman times, encapsulated by the dog-tooth chevron patterns that can be seen on the inner courtyard archway. Originally built to protect England’s border from Scottish forces, the castle guards a road across the River Aln, and would have been surrounded by a moat filled with sharpened stakes and logs to defend from cavalry attack.

Nowadays however, the castle houses special exhibitions in three of the castle’s perimeter towers, including the Northumberland Fusiliers museum and the Percy Tenantry Volunteers exhibition. The extravagant State Rooms are decorated in an Italian Renaissance style, and offer one of the country’s finest private art collections, amassed over the years by generations of the Percy family, of whom many were passionate in their love of art. The drawing room boasts a remarkable ceiling carving and frieze, painted and designed by the Italian artist Alessandro Mantovani; while the 17th century Cucci cabinets were originally made for Louis XIV and boast fine detailing that has been expertly restored - featuring monkeys and dogs amongst other decorations.

The castle also contains the finest collection of Italian paintings in the north of England, including work by Canaletto, Titian and Van Dyck – the Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England following great success in Italy and his native Flanders. Van Dyck’s portrait of the 10th Earl of Northumberland sits proudly amongst the homegrown work of Turner and William Dobson, one of the first notable English painters. The magnificent library contains one of the most important collections of books and manuscripts currently in private hands; with around 14,000 titles housed in floor to ceiling bookshelves. Built over many centuries by successive Earls and Dukes, the original collection was compiled by the 9th Earl, who having been imprisoned in the Tower of London as a conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot, had a large library placed in his cell, consisting mainly of Italian books, including those by Tasso and Machiavelli.

As an interesting side note, while in the Tower, ‘The Wizard Earl’ surrounded himself with men of learning, including the astronomer Thomas Harriot and Sir Walter Raleigh, with whom he discussed advanced scientific ideas and smoked tobacco. An enormous mahogany table extends to over 33 feet in length and dominates the dining room where the 19th century family silver stands proudly on display – dinner at Alnwick is not a mundane affair. Offering a stunning insight into the lives of the Duke and his family, the medieval banqueting hall features stunning emerald green silked walls, and was refurbished in 2005, which included the restoration of the stunning Italian marble chimney piece figures, carved by sculptors Nucci and Strazza. Other rooms that are open to the public include the china gallery, which retains one of the most important collections of Meissen porcelain in Britain; the Guard Chambers with their Venetian style mosaic floor; the breakfast room; the saloon; and the Chapel, with its 17th century tapestries and Gothic ceiling.

As well as being a family home and a tourist attraction, in recent years the castle has provided the backdrop for some of film and television’s most iconic scenes. The opening credits to the original ‘Blackadder’ series see Edmund riding his steed in front of the fortress; while Kevin Costner’s ‘Robin Hood Prince of Thieves’, and ‘Elizabeth’ starring Cate Blanchett are also notable films that were shot in the ancient surroundings. It is as Hogwarts that the castle has enjoyed its most recent fame however, with seminal scenes such as Harry’s first broomstick flying lesson, and Ron Weasley crash-landing his flying Ford Anglia into the Whomping Willow being filmed within the castle’s inner bailey. Indeed, Harry Potter has introduced a new generation of tourists to the castle; with children flocking to try broomstick training sessions, engage with Potterinspired characters, or partake in alchemy experiments.

Along with conference rooms, wedding facilities, and educational workshops and activities, Alnwick Castle takes stately homes to a new level. As Ralph Percy, the 12th Duke of Northumberland himself says on the castle’s website: “[Alnwick Castle’s] walls are steeped in history and filled with tales of warfare, romance and chivalry. We very much hope that you enjoy your visit to our special home.” Alnwick Castle is open daily from 28th March until 29th October 2014, 10.00am to 5.30pm. A pioneering platform in estate agency marketing is now rolling out an update to its client base. Since their advent almost five years ago, the bespoke property TV channel, developed and implemented by the in-house creative teams at the Cream Club’s Cambridgeshire-based headquarters, has become a distinctive medium for leading independent agencies to distinguish themselves from their local competition. The concept behind web TV channels arose from finding new and engaging tools to offer premium estate agencies an exclusive opportunity to increase their market share in their coverage area. Spurred by growth in national online activity, faster broadband speeds and the audience for video-on-demand; and with statistics demonstrating video marketing to be up to 48 percent more effective in generating business than more conventional approaches (Source: IAB UK); professionally-produced walkthrough videos have been the catalyst for this leap forward in online estate agency marketing. The stream of videos, not only showcasing an agent’s collection of properties, but also providing details about corporate services and the geographical area they serve, retain a prime position in the evolution of Cream’s online property TV platform.

Reflecting the shift in online activity from searching to sharing content, the updated online TV platform offers greater integration with social media platforms. Every property which features on the restyled websites is provided with its own microsite. The link can be instantly shared via the leading social networks, and it is anticipated the option of creating a web postcard for every property will quickly follow. At Beresfords, we shall be embracing this advance in online property marketing in the months to come. Through beresfordsgroup.tv, we already know and understand the positive impact a property TV website has, and we are looking forward to see how our new-look site will sustain our award-winning and high-standard customer service. The demand for online TV websites appears to be insatiable among the industry, as their effectiveness in increasing instructions, and consequentially, market share, becomes clear among the agencies who have them, and those who want them. In the five years since the initial property TV websites were launched, Cream’s client base has expanded by more than tenfold, to cover a network of companies across England, Scotland and Wales. It seems apparent the progression of the property TV phenomenon keeps moving forward.

FOOD AND DRINK

An

incredible spice man In a career spanning almost 40 years, an appetite for progression has kept Cyrus Todiwala at the forefront of London’s culinary scene. The chef talks to Colm O’Rourke about how his distinctive approach to food has seasoned.

72

FOOD AND DRINK

When did you first have an ambition to work as a chef? How did that idea develop? I had no clue. The idea of making it a career never occurred. I was selected by the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay to come and work for them. When I started, there wasn’t much in the way of ambition. That gradually happened as I aspired to be different and rise.

You worked around the world before coming to London in 1991. How did the move to the UK arise? I left the Taj Group to open a restaurant with a friend. I then migrated to Australia; in the meantime, a friend who lived in London asked if I’d join him and start a restaurant. Having worked here before, and with so many cousins and relatives, we decided to come over.

Why were your parents against your desire to become a chef? My parents didn’t know or understand the industry. They’d have preferred me to have a more sought-after career; after all, the son of a popular man in Bombay was becoming a domestic hand, as it was seen in those days. Dad hoped I’d join him and open a garage, but he did cars and I did food.

What did you know about London’s culinary scene when you first arrived? I knew nothing at the time. When I first entered the kitchen at Namaste, I had to learn and cook the British version of Indian cuisine until I was ready to put my own imprint on the menu. I hated it, but it was expected, and until I managed to wean habits away, I couldn’t do anything.

Where did you gain your experience and qualifications? I did a Diploma in Hotel Administration and Food Technology. My main experience came at a hotel chain for fifteen years; I was trained by traditional and foreign chefs. I also trained in Geneva and the Hilton Park Lane, and I spent a few weeks with French chefs. Later, when working in Goa, I decided I had to relearn Indian food, as that was where my passion ought to lie.

73

FOOD AND DRINK

74

You then developed what is regarded as your hallmark style. How was this nurtured? Things had to change: it wasn’t the Indian food I grew up with or was trained in. We had to be bold, so we changed the menu overnight. We lost business: people didn’t recognise the menu. Then, luck struck in the form of Fay Maschler. She came to investigate: an article followed, and the people who walked out came back. This prompted me to explore the markets, and follow the style of using what I liked, and creating the food I knew; never sticking to one region. I can proudly say nowhere in any restaurant will you find the variety of raw materials and ingredients used.

You have gained a reputation for staff training, and you are the only Indian restaurant in the UK with Investors in People Champion status. How did this come about? I had good people who needed training if we were to succeed, so we embarked on our own mission. This caught local attention, and eventually, I became a role model. I won a National Training Award and a Millennium Excellence Award. I then became one of three restaurateurs who launched a school, making Britain the world’s first country to train in the Asian and Oriental sectors. This is so vital today as Britain expands into more ethnic cuisines, embracing all of them as their own.

Is your cookery something which changes and evolves? Where do you draw inspirations from? This continues as I learn more about what our markets have, and my relationship with our farmers across the UK deepens. New products on the market, things that excite you, and the urge to do new dishes is constant, and helps keep that creativity going. All you have to do is look around Britain today: inspiration is everywhere, from small new producers to the traditional ones; we have some of the world’s best produce at our doorstep.

You cooked for the Queen as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour. How did this happen, and what did you create for her? I was made a Deputy Lieutenant in 2008. I was asked by the Lord Lieutenant if I’d plan the banquet to start the year-long tour across Britain. This wasn’t just the luncheon, but also the venue, support, sponsorship etc. It was a resounding success, as people chipped in and did everything. We had a set time limit for the menu, so there were only two courses. I created a dish embracing the marriage between British and Indian cuisines: The Country Captain, or Indianised Shepherd’s Pie. I thought it represented both countries, and the work HRH Prince Charles has done to revive mutton. I also created port-soaked prunes with bread-and-butter pudding.

FOOD AND DRINK

One of your newest restaurants fuses Goan and Portuguese cuisine. Where did the idea for this come from? Working in Goa for eight years gave me a deep passion for its food and culture. Speaking the language fluently, and knowing many Goans, it was a good idea to introduce Goan cuisine to Central London. Three years ago, I was asked to do a documentary on the Portuguese exploration of discovering the modern world. Therefore, it had to be Goan food, partly influenced by the Portuguese. Television work has become part of your life. How did this strand of your career come about? I made my first TV recording sometime in 1996. I have never pushed myself in that direction, and I think I never will. I love doing it though, and I’d really like my own programme so I could teach the British public simple things to make. Cooking is still my career, and of late, TV has added to that. How did it feel bringing Asian cuisine to a mainstream audience with “The Incredible Spicemen”? Have you received any recognition for the series? This was amazing, and such fun to do. Tony, my partner in crime, is full of life, and is fun to work with. Our audience grew with each episode, so that’s recognition. That the BBC may not do another series is a disappointment.

All images: courtesy of Cyrus Todiwala

76

Are there any upcoming events or projects you’re taking part in? In January 2015, I’m taking a talented team to Goa to launch a food festival showcasing British cuisine, to encourage the budding chefs there to embrace their own cuisine. We’ll invite Indian chefs to question our team and be inspired. There’s a full day of cookery demonstrations, and on the final day, a gala fundraising dinner to help sustain educational and environmental projects in Goa. This hasn’t been done before in a place I love, but I know I can make it a big success. It will be great to add value to both cultures. With all you’ve achieved in your professional career, where would you like to go next? Wherever it takes me really. When I told Mum and Dad before leaving India we would return in seven years, Dad told me two things: do not regret leaving us, go where your destiny takes you; and secondly, you have no control on your destiny, a greater power decides where you go and what you do. In time, I truly believed his words. Do I know where my career will take me next? No - but will I continue to embrace the good things we believe in, to that, the answer is yes!

ARTS AND CULTURE

Master of colour The works of the Italian painter, Veronese, can be appreciated in any age. Rebecca Seward looked at the painter at the National Gallery exhibition, Veronese: Magnificence in Renaissance Venice, which in the curator’s opinion was the show for you ‘If you are someone who loves opera, colour, theatre and beauty’.

B

orn in Verona in 1528, Paolo Veronese was popular both in his lifetime and throughout the following centuries, although his work fell out of favour in more recent times. This is all changing. For the very first time, a full exhibition of Veronese’s work was on show at the National Gallery in London and, in the words of the exhibition’s curator, Xavier F Salomon (currently the Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator of The Frick Collection): “Veronese’s paintings are age-old themes, which are relevant today; love, trust, devotion, the family and temptation.” The opulence and context of his paintings may require more thought and contemplation to understand the subject matter than they did at the time of creation, yet they can still be appreciated for their ‘sheer beauty’. Apprenticed to Giovanni Battista Caroto,Veronese was originally trained in Mannerism and his skill soon surpassed his teachers. Mannerism was seen as a reaction to the ideals that had been portrayed previously and was noted for being intellectually sophisticated and for favouring instability and tension. Veronese, however, preferred to use bright colours, and is renowned for his religious and spiritual works, which depict vivid scenes in great detail.

78

© National Gallery, London

When asked what most appeals to people about Veronese, Xavier says: “People are enthralled by his use of colour, for example the wonderful fabrics such as the sumptuous silk of St Catherine’s dress in The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine.” Lent by the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, this picture was painted as an altar screen in the late 1560s and reflects the construct of a 16th-century Venice with musicians and opulent surroundings, while the religious element still shines through with cherubs emerging from gold clouds. Veronese’s use of colour and detail draw the viewer in, as Xavier explains: “The people that populate his canvas are complemented with very engaging human details, which draw us in, such as the two little girls playing with a dog in the foreground of the Supper at Emmaus.” The main scene of this painting, lent by the Louvre in Paris, is set in a palatial Venetian family home where Christ is seen breaking bread with two of the apostles, while to the left there is a cameo of Christ meeting them on the road.

Similar details can be seen in many of his works, and are very apparent in the The Family Of Darius before Alexander. Painted between 1565 and 1567, this picture is of a significant size and illustrates the story of when the family of the defeated Persian Emperor, Darius, is introduced to Alexander after the battle of Issus. The family unfortunately mistook Hephasteion to be the new emperor due to his manner of dress, and the picture clearly shows their confusion when Alexander steps forward and presents himself as the new emperor, as Xavier expounds: “Many of his canvases have a huge number of people in them but the way he draws the focus into the story that is unfolding before our eyes is astounding.” This is more than evident in this case, where the eye is immediately

drawn to Darius’ family and Alexander and his friends despite the various other prominent details, such as the monkey that looks to be stealing jewellery. When questioned as to his favourite piece of Veronese’s work, Xavier answers: “A work that stands out to me has to be the Martyrdom of St George from the church of San Giorgio in Braida in Veronese’s home town of Verona. I think it’s the best picture in the show – in fact it is one of the best pictures of the period. Composition, colour and theatre come together wonderfully in this painting.” Depicting the martyrdom of St George, there is chaos amongst the characters below, and yet the viewer is drawn by St George’s gaze up to the celestial beings above,

ARTS AND CULTURE

where a number of iconic religious figures look down and a cherub reaches toward St George with a wreath. The work has only left the church once before, and Xavier is delighted that they were able to borrow it for the show. Bright colours, blue skies, and chaos amongst the characters are all motifs that can be found throughout Veronese’s work. These are readily apparent in my personal favourites, The Family of Darius before Alexander and the Wedding at Cana (currently still in the Louvre due to its large size) where the varied vivid colours of the busy wedding party contrast with the serene brightness of the blue sky above and the stillness of the haloed figure of Christ, who gazes out impassively at the viewer.

As previously stated, Veronese is well known for populating his canvasses with a range of characters, which caused a problem when the Roman Catholic Inquisition took offence to those that adorned his painting of The Last Supper for the refectory of the Basilica di Santi Giovanni e Paolo. Upon answering a question as to whether characters painted to fill space should be relevant to the topic, Veronese was believed to have answered that he made up characters that he deemed proper. The National Gallery has quoted that “Veronese defended the painter’s right to ‘take the same licence as poets and jesters take’.” Ordered to correct the painting within three months, Veronese renamed it The Feast in the House of Levi, rather than change the painting itself.

The exhibition offered a wide range of his works, including portraits, many spiritual works, and the Allegories of Love series, which comprises four paintings. The first, titled Unfaithfulness, depicts a love triangle, in which one man has hold of a woman’s hand while the other passes her a note. The second is titled Scorn, and features Cupid standing on top of a prostrate man, while two women look on; it is believed that these women represent Carnality and Virtue, with one dressed in a very prim manner and the other painted with her breasts visible. The third painting in the series is Respect, which the National Gallery website describes thus: “The dominant interpretation of the image is that the armoured man is tempted by Cupid, but withdraws from the sleeping nude in respect.” Last in the series is Happy Union, which shows a man and a woman, who are united by figures possibly representing Venus and Cupid, while the laurel wreath is a symbol of Virtue, and the olive branch, Peace.

Veronese is often put together with contemporaries such as Titian and Tintoretto. However Xavier explained that “Veronese’s background is different... this exhibition is an opportunity to explore the artist more broadly in a wider context – to consider the time he spent before to moving to Venice and the various influences that differentiate him from others.” Boasting a wide range of works from frescos, altarpieces, portraits, and large religious, historical and mystical pieces, Veronese’s works all show what Xavier describes as “his master of composition, his wonderful use of colour and his gift of narrative.” In addition Veronese is credited with influencing the likes of Van Dyck, Rubens, Delacroix and Tiepolo. This exhibition portrayed the best of Veronese’s vast portfolio, and was the first of its kind in the UK.

So you think you can drive! Kevin Haggarthy signs up for a bit of expert driving tuition with the Lotus Driving Academy.

e are at Lotus HQ, and I am riding passenger at the Hethel test circuit with one of their chief test drivers behind the wheel. This was technically ‘the finale’ for me, the icing on the cake if you like, for I’d already spent a week with this car on test. ‘Til then, I thought I had a pretty good handle on its abilities, but on-track, with experienced hands behind the wheel, I was learning a whole lot more. With traction control at first partially disengaged and then switched off completely, the test driver ‘demonstrated’ varying degrees of understeer and oversteer at incredible speeds, yet he was so totally relaxed behind the wheel that he could have been sipping tea at the same time. The natural abilities of this car were incredible, yet they were complemented and made ultimately possible by the skills of its driver. Not being new to speed, track driving or even racing for that matter, it wasn’t the case of being phased by a ‘flying lap experience’. Quite the contrary, this was more about the harmony of technical knowledge and acquired driving

skill: finding expression in a tool built for the enthusiast to singularly indulge in the joy of driving. I was hungry for more, and I wanted to do it myself, so after some preliminary discussions, and attracting the interest of a couple of mates to join me, I signed up for a Level 2 course at the Lotus Driving Academy. The courses take place at the famous Hethel test track at Lotus HQ in Norwich, and are open to everyone. Don’t mistake this for your average track day; it is anything but! You’ll end up, as we did, beaming with excitement for what is genuinely a true brand experience, and you will leave the premises a genuinely better driver. Our morning began at 8 am (ish), the sun was shining and our very smartly dressed instructors welcomed us with a warm greeting, a beautifully laid breakfast, and much needed coffee. Lotus had taken the time to liaise with us beforehand to make sure the course programme was to our liking. The idea was to focus on and build on our current driving standards rather than start kindergarten-style, making it all the more useful for us all.

Getting to grips After a quick briefing on the day’s activities we were soon out on track. First task: ‘getting to grips’ with understeer and oversteer. No Tiff Needell or The Stig drama here, but simply driving the car faster and faster in a concentric circle until you feel loss of directional control due to understeer – the front of the car running wide of the steering angle, or oversteer - the tendency of the car to turn in more sharply than intended; and applying basic correctional action to get the car back in line. As our instructor pointed out, that is all you need to be able to do on the road to bring the car back under control, nothing overly dramatic as you see often see on the telly. Simple, but crucially effective. Next up was a slalom course, where we were taught to look ahead using vision to temper speed and flow, whilst maintaining a constant throttle to maximise progress and safety at the same time. The smoother and more flowing you are, the quicker the time from start to finish. If you look boring, you’re probably going very quick, and as we were reminded on several occasions: “never mistake drama for speed.” Our next technical exercise of the morning focused on braking, and high speed ‘brake and avoid’ exercises. On this one, you needed to trust the unbelievable braking capacity of the entry-level Elise’s we were using, and retrain your brain to ‘brake and steer’ at the same time. We touched something like 85 mph on the straight at Hethel, yet still were able to steer/ brake aggressively and stop before a hazard. 86

By the time we hit lunch we were ready for a break, but it also gave time to piece these three exercises together as a prelude to the classroom theory session that followed. It proved quite a technical Q and A, but only so because we were much more erudite on the finer points of performance driving than we were at the start of the day. The classroom banter was the proof in the pudding that Lotus is all about appealing to the enthusiasts; we enthused about the advantages of traditional manual gearboxes for keeping the driver in touch with the driving experience, the importance of good pedal set up for ‘heel’ n toe’ braking and gear changing, the virtues of light weight, mid-engines, hydraulic steering feel etc. A petrolhead fest if you like, and totally Lotus speak; as our Lotus colleagues explained: “we make cars for the enthusiast!” ‘sweet spot’ It was during the afternoon’s track driving activities where it all came together; all of us achieving massively quicker lap times with successive highspeed lapping sessions on track. So much so that all of us reached our own ‘sweet spots’ by the end of the day, lapping as quickly as we ever have or ever did. Beaming smiles, clapping, and backslapping were the order of the day, not least in appreciation of the efforts of our expert Lotus instructors. It turned out to be the perfect day for anyone who loves driving, and there’s hardly a better way to truly experience the high performance capability of a Lotus. My mate Barry summed up the experience best of all; in his own words: “one of the best days of my life!” Not surprisingly, we have already signed up for Level 3.

Testimonial:

“Having agreed to do the Lotus driving day, I had the usual expectation of conventional track days. Oh how wrong I was! The Lotus driving day quickly hit my expectations of normal track/driving events, then superseded them into another realm of superb dedication, knowledge and the most important, supreme professionalism. Our personal instructor was not only an absolute pleasure to be with, his motivation was indeed the best I have ever experienced. I will be back to the next Lotus Level 3 event. Highly recommended. Barry Yarde (Course participant)

The fabulous

Ferrari F12 – the ultimate Ferrari magic Words by Kevin Haggarthy

MOTORING

Price starts at £239,736. sit, reminisce, and reflect on what has been a truly mind-blowing experience. For many years I have been blessed with the privilege of driving many supercars, but never has one impressed me as much as this. Our last Ferrari test was the fabulous 458 Spider, and having spent hundreds of miles previously behind the wheel of the hard topped version, the Italia, I found it hard to imagine how it was possible to beat that car on sheer ability. The Ferrari spokesperson’s response to this conclusion was: “Ah, but wait until you try the F12.” He was right – the bar has been raised again. The F12 is powered by a 730 bhp V12, without doubt the most beautiful engine I have ever seen. It generates 690 Nm of torque, or loosely put, it has about seven times more pick up power on the move than an average family saloon. 0-62 mph is achieved in 3.1 seconds, and it is only too eager to reach its 211 mph top speed. To give you some idea of the levels we are talking about here – you can comfortably change from first to second at 60 mph (or even more) with another five more dual-clutch Usain Bolts just waiting for a flick of the paddle.

I

Ultimate driveability Yet the driveability of this car is even more impressive than its staggering performance. On our test drive, the rain was falling in buckets and showed no sign of letting up. In fact, my young photographer and passenger for the day had a positively sullen look on his face. He wasn’t worried about the pictures; they were already done – no, his disappointment lay in the prospect that the incessant rain was going to take the edge off his dream drive in a Ferrari. But he was wrong; for in his own words the rain enhanced the excitement of the

drive, and showed the exceptional abilities of this car in a way that otherwise may not have been possible. Being young, he had it all film recorded on his mobile phone, and according to his mates, he has spoken about nothing else since. And he owns a Nissan Skyline. The F12 is as engaging at 40 mph as it is at 70 mph, and how it manages to contain 730 bhp into such a manageable and safe-handling package is simply incredible. Although this style can only be advocated for track, not road, this car is so well-sorted that you can slide the rear end to any predictable angle you like in the wet, for it gives you enough confidence to ease it back into line without fuss or drama. And yet, such is the prodigious power of the F12 that it is capable of breaking rear end traction in any of the intermediate gears on a dry straight road. The genius of the F12 is the marrying of the two extremes. Engineers need look no further for a solution to containing 730 bhp into a road car; the answer is the Ferrari F12. “We’re going to fly” Nothing quite prepares you for the searing standing-start acceleration of the F12. It’s razor keen and raw from the outset. The V12, howling to be released, screams in orgasmic joy as you plant that throttle. Take sex out of the equation and think of the last time you were taxi-ing in an aeroplane on a runway, the pilot applies full power for take-off, and you get that surging push in the back. Well, multiply that force by three and that’s how it feels to be seated in an F12 under hard acceleration. In the words of my passenger, with both hands clutching the side of his seat and the rocket–like acceleration seeming to never end: ‘It feels like we’re going to fly.”

89

Aero-genius But probably not, for ingenious aerodynamic innovations keep the car rooted to the ground. The F12 has a drag coefficient of 0.299, and generates 123 kg of downforce at 200 km/h. The ‘Aero Bridge’ design concept uses the car’s bonnet to create downforce, and Active Brake Cooling automatically opens spoiler-integrated air vents to cool the brakes. Not surprisingly, the state-of-the-art technology in the F12 is endless, yet its mathematical genesis is simple: less weight, more power. The F12’s spaceframe chassis and bodywork are completely new, and it uses 12 different aluminium alloys to contribute to getting the weight down to just 1,525 kg, whilst boosting torsional rigidity by 20%. The F12’s bloodline predecessor, the 599 GTB Fiorano, is a 1688 kg heavyweight by comparison, and the F12 betters its fuel consumption and emission levels by 30%.

someone as good looking as me behind the wheel; Ferraris even bring out inflated egos. Best not to self-delude behind the wheel though, as being one of the fastest cars on the planet, the F12 demands a responsible approach. While the antics described earlier show F12 genius on the test track, it doesn’t mean the F12 cannot be enjoyed within legal limits on the road. It is truly enjoyable and rewarding to drive at any speed and, for those who choose to, it has the usability and reliability of every day transport. Yes, there’s a seven year warranty even with Ferraris these days (and a decent sized boot). Taking into account that this car has the true ability to be a World Grand Master of performance, yet is equally at home on the office run, both redefines and justifies the place of the supercar in today’s world. What an achievement.

The human factor It may be a tired cliché when it comes to Ferraris, but this car simply oozes passion, beauty and style. We couldn’t park the car for two minutes without it attracting a crowd. On one occasion, when parking up for photography, a car drives up to us, and the driver says: “I know nothing about cars, I haven’t a clue what that is, but all I can say is that it’s the most beautiful car I have ever seen.” Ferraris reach out to your soul. On two occasions, after a couple of women blew kisses to me, I thought just how lucky Ferrari are to have

They’ve done it again... BMW’s first entry into the small SUV class promises to be a real winner.

E

very time I drive a new BMW I reflect on the experience with a wry smile. That’s normally because I’ve had a pretty good time driving it. Outside of specialist high performance cars, BMW is amongst the most dedicated brands I know to enjoyment behind the wheel. Us motoring scribblers have often praised their commitment to the common driver’s choice of front-engined rear wheel drive cars, and of course, the overriding priority the brand gives to driving dynamics. The BMW ‘M’ cars are now legendary for just that, but all BMW’s are, in essence, driver focused cars. This new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer breaks away from tradition to make its mark in the highly competitive small SUV class. What’s more, it debuts a new super-efficient three cylinder engine. Two quite radical moves for the brand and, being BMW, you have to sit up and take notice. Spacious, comfortable, innovative The move to front wheel drive for the 2 Series Tourer is all about maximising cabin space and comfort in a highly compact, yet user friendly package. As such, herein lies one of the most efficient space-utilising packages this observer has seen. Whilst measuring only 4,342 mm in length, and 1,800 mm in width, there is ample room for five people, and enough room for multiple six footers to sit comfortably front and rear at the same time! Actually, it has the same amount of rear seating space as the BMW 7 Series – their biggest saloon. Flexibility is enhanced by sliding adjustable rear seats, creating even more generous luggage space to the rear. Drop the rear seats, however, and the

kitchen sink won’t be out of the question creating a humongous, easy-to-load 1,510 litres of total luggage space in all. Lift the foldable boot floor and there’s a handy storage compartment and a multifunction tray to stop the kids spotting and eating your Mars bars, Skittles, and Twix bars. Still the driver’s machine Ride and handling are the acid test for any new BMW. If it can’t walk the walk here then it’s game over. Of course, the bar is raised pretty high too, as there is some serious competition out there. BMW have thus needed to redefine how a small SUV bearing its prestigious name should perform. This new car is agile, involving and fun. We test drove the car on some of the Cotswold’s finest roads, and found ourselves praising the flexibility and free breathing nature of the new three cylinder engine, as well as the refinement of the four cylinder diesel. That’ll be due in part to a whole new chassis design matched to a long wheelbase and wide track, a reduced–friction steering system, a tortionallystiff lightweight body with low overhangs, and a low centre of gravity. That combination allows you to drive with enthusiasm, sitting tight and flat into bends with excellent body control, high levels of grip, and minimum lean into the bends. It has that ideal balance of agility and refinement, striking just the right compromise between those of us who enjoy a keen drive, and those for whom comfort and ride refinement come first. Believe me, this SUV is not a boring option to a keen driver; quite the opposite once you’re behind the wheel.

93

MOTORING

Yet it’s interesting how BMW have been able to translate an engaging drive and handling dynamics into a class where it is rarely an overriding priority. But of course, ‘it’s a BMW’, a USP for drivers, without sacrificing expectations of possibly less enthusiastic partners and children. It makes absolute sense for BMW to enter this class in this way, and they do it well. They had to. New engines The new twin turbo three cylinder petrol engine is all aluminium and ultra-low friction; it breathes freely, and on the drive, has no noticeable drawbacks to a four cylinder. So much so that you wouldn’t know unless you were told the difference. Where you gain, however, is on fuel

consumption (an average 57.6 mpg) and emissions (only 115 g/km) and this from a car that will take you to the 0-62 mph benchmark in 9.3 seconds, top 124 mph, yet generate a respectable 220NM of torque. The four cylinder diesel promises more of everything: 68.9 mpg, 109 g/km on the emissions front, 0-62 mph in 8.9 seconds, and a top speed of 127 mph. Great standard spec When you buy a new car, the standard price tends to grow with optional equipment that becomes more of a necessity than an option these days. BMW have cottoned on to this and are keeping costs honest by offering a comprehensive range of

“ The new twin turbo three cylinder petrol engine is all aluminium and ultra-low friction; it breathes freely, and on the drive, has no noticeable drawbacks to a four cylinder.”

94

standard specification on this new car. The Active Tourer, for example, features the new Pedestrian Warning system with City Braking, i.e. if you don’t stop in an emergency, the car will do it for you. The options are useful though; a full colour headup display shows information on a screen, which extends out between the steering wheel and the windscreen keeps eyes usefully focused on the road, whilst the Parking Assistant package goes one step further by doing your parking for you. So BMW have done it again - as always, a well-researched, well developed premium motor that will be in your BMW showrooms from 27th September; waiting for the keen driver who needs a truly practical all-purpose lifestyle vehicle, which doesn’t sacrifice the joy of driving.
