A very warm welcome to this very special edition of Essex Homes and Style. 2018 marks our 50th anniversary, and as Beresfords celebrates its first halfcentenary, what better time could there be to take a look at the history of our brand and there’s also some reminiscing as we look back fondly over the last five decades. Meanwhile, we have our usual mix of lifestyle articles, such as Vogue on Manolo Blahnik and a look at McLaren’s new supercar. Or you can turn to page 52 for an outline of the British sporting and social calendar for the year, and of course, no issue would be complete without a fantastic selection of the best properties across the county. Those of us who have been around long enough will have seen a seismic shift in the way property was marketed in 1968 and the way we do things now. Younger generations might find it hard to fathom a time with no internet, few landlines and certainly no mobile phones. Harder still to believe is that we actually managed to keep in touch with each other (is there anything more quintessentially British than an orderly queue for a red phone box?). Without email, property details were dropped on your doormat via something called ‘the post’. If you were looking to buy, you would pick up a copy of the local paper and pore over the latest properties on the market. There were no photographs – just lineage advertising. If you wanted to move to another town, you would have to ask your newsagent to order a copy of the paper for that area. Fast forward to 2018, and if you want to put your house on the market, we can get it in front of thousands of potential buyers within minutes. Worth noting is that many of these people now come from much further afield than the neighbouring town. While we’re proud of our local heritage and unrivalled regional knowledge, the most recent figures from the Beresfords website show that our properties are being viewed in over 80% of countries worldwide, with the US topping the list and five EU countries (including France and Germany) in the top ten. Whilst the market has been more challenging in recent times, there is still a strong demand for the popular county of Essex. The Government’s HelpToBuy scheme has no doubt contributed to that area of growth, benefitting millennials in particular, making it possible to take your first step onto the property ladder with as little as a 5% deposit. Equally welcome was the decision outlined in the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget to scrap Stamp Duty for first time buyers, with a projected one million people set to benefit from this over the next five years. There is also a huge choice of mortgage products available to those first purchasing or moving generally and some excellent rates for re-mortgage business for whatever you choose to raise finance for. It’s always best to speak to a fully independent mortgage adviser such as Flagstone, our mortgage company, to make sure you are achieving the best product (and interest rates) for your needs. I hope you enjoy reading this edition as much as we have enjoyed putting it together, and we look forward to helping you with your future property needs.

Quintessentially English 14 | Essex Homes & Style

Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa Tucking into a dainty pastry bite or slathering a freshly baked scone still warm from the oven with lashings of butter and scarlet strawberry jam has become synonymous with the most indulgent of English traditions – Afternoon Tea. As British as cricket or a tall glass of Pimms brimming with cucumber and mint, this decadent afternoon ritual, which also involves a delicate assortment of sandwiches and fine china tea cups, is now celebrated across the country as the ultimate elegant treat. Essex Homes & Style | 15

Lainston House, an Exclusive Hotel

Served in either The Drawing Room or on The Terrace overlooking the stunning avenue of lime trees, taking Afternoon Tea in the tranquil ambiance of Lainston House is a true delight. www.exclusive.co.uk

So how did this most tasty tradition begin? Surprisingly we need only wind back to clock to the 1840’s and zoom in on the utterings of a London socialite called Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford and close friend of Queen Victoria, who decided she needed a nibble to keep her going between luncheon and dinner. She requested that a tray of tea, with bread and butter and a slice of cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. And it was at this moment, as The Duchess took a lady-like bite of a soft butter sandwich that the concept of Afternoon Tea was born. Perhaps feeling slight lonely with her solo afternoon snacking, the wellconnected Duchess started to invite friends to join her for a tasty bite – and the ritual of socialising over sandwiches caught on. As a result, taking Afternoon Tea in the 1880’s became a popular social event for the upper classes, with ladies changing into long gowns, gloves and hats to enjoy the occasion.

And the simple bread and butter snack enjoyed by The Duchess was replaced with a more indulgent range of sandwiches and pastries – usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock. From here the taking of Afternoon Tea gradually spread from the home into wider society and suddenly everyone was doing it. Tea Rooms and Tea Gardens sprang up all over the country and then music was added to the mix and by the 1900’s Tea Dances were all the rage. The tea rationing that came with the Two World Wars significantly dampened the Afternoon Tea atmosphere but despite the depression, the cucumber sandwich tradition survived. Today this quintessentially English tradition is flourishing, and has become synonymous with decadence and opulence and is often enjoyed by guests staying at luxury hotels, here we take a look at a few of our favourite afternoon tea venues.

Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa

One of the great English traditions is of course Afternoon Tea. And where better to take it than in one of England’s very first country house hotels? Named

after the celebrated naval officer, Captain Marryat, the Afternoon Tea at the five star Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa uses the loveliest of local ingredients and

features sandwiches, cakes, scones, jams and teas that more than do Hampshire proud. (Although they are happy to admit that their smoked salmon comes

from the slightly further afield, the crystal clear waters of Scotland!) Afternoon Tea at Chewton Glen is served between 3pm and 4.30pm in The Dining Room, or in fine weather, on the terrace. It is priced at £29.50 per person. www.chewtonglen.com

Happy 50 to Beresfords th

B

eresfords has reached the golden years and unlike many of us reaching this milestone birthday, we’re delighted to be here! With our original office opening in 1968 in Corbets Tey Road Upminster, Beresfords has grown over the last 50 years expanding across Havering and throughout Essex up to the Hertfordshire and Suffolk borders. We now employ around 230 local people across our many offices and specialist divisions.

It’s a family affair When Reg and Eileen Beresford founded the original office in 1968, their intention was quite clear; to offer a personal and professional service to the people of Upminster. Paul Beresford joined the business in 1975 and since then, the company has grown throughout Essex. The same family ethos is continued by the founding partners’ grandson, Alex Beresford, who is now an Area Director.

Working with the local community For over half a century we have built a strong reputation for supporting local communities, whether that be helping local schools, fetes and events through to larger projects where our teams and clients have raised thousands of pounds for various charities and initiatives. Beresfords is very proud to be the organisers of our very own Charity Gala Ball, for the second year running in aid of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance raising a total of over £45,500 altogether. 26 | Essex Homes & Style

Sold or let time and time again… We are proud to have acted for thousands of people across the County at various key moments in their lives such as their first home, to something bigger through to a more manageable home in later life. In fact in some cases we now count their children and even grandchildren as clients. Having been established for 50 years, we have sold many properties repeatedly over the decades. This Upminster property was first sold by us in 1982 and then again in 1986, 1991, 1994 and finally in 2010. Landlords Mr and Mrs Lander are equally impressed saying “We have used Beresfords as our agent for the last 16 years. They manage five properties for us and we are delighted with the service and support provided to both ourselves and our tenants.

2018 Today the Beresfords Group of companies have various divisions specialising in a particular sector of the property market. They are all successful in their own right and include residential sales, lettings, land, new homes, surveying, mortgages, international property and holiday lets.

The Company is proud of the fact that our success has been rewarded with 44 national and regional awards being won over the last 10 years, including being voted Best Estate Agency in Essex for the last 6 years in a row at the UK Property Awards. If you are interested in selling or letting, let us make your story a success and call us on 01245 397499 or visit www.beresfords.co.uk

When I joined in 1981, Beresfords was just a 13 year old teenager, in 2018 it reaches respectable middle age with its 50th birthday. At the time I joined the Company it just had the one office and was about to open the second in Brentwood. I became the first full-time employee working as Manager at the Upminster office, allowing Paul to steer the expansion out into Essex. Since then I have seen the Company grow into one of the most successful and respected estate agents in the UK with a string of national awards to its name and a workforce of over 200 local people. I am proud to have played a part in getting Beresfords to where it is today, but at the same time I am thankful that it has never lost its core values of professionalism and integrity and remains an independent, family orientated business. Terry Holmes Director | 37 years with Beresfords

On arriving at a property for an accompanied viewing, the couple were waiting on the door step and with them was a dog. We entered the property and the elderly couple that lived there welcomed us in. We looked round the property with the dog also running around the house with us. Just as we were about to leave the elderly couple thanked them for coming to view the house and commented on how lovely their dog was. The couple replied “it’s not our dog we thought it was your dog as it was sitting on the door step when we arrived.” On opening the front door to leave a frantic man was calling out in the street for his lost dog!

My memorable moment of being part of the Beresfords team is definitely the social side and especially the Summer Awards Evening and Ball. I think it’s a great reward for the whole company to be together for one night and celebrate the success everyone has contributed to. It allows us all to feel part of the Beresfords family and I look forward to them every year and with a different theme at each event it is always a great surprise for us all. Jo Hall Branch Secretary 20 years with Beresfords

Memorable Moments...

We were instructed to sell a home which had remote controlled electric gates and we had a key which gave us access. We often held the viewings and we were under strict instructions to call the vendor before as they had two Rottweiler guard dogs which had to be safely kept away. On one particular day I had phoned ahead. As I arrived and got out of the car, I crunched across the drive and the sound of flying stones come round from the back of the house. A huge bark followed and I saw the dogs hurtling towards me with bared teeth. The blind panic took over as I ran for it at top speed. I finally managed to get myself safely into the property before the frenzied hound could sink its teeth into the seat of my trousers! I moved pretty fast considering I was 54 at the time. At 62, I think the dogs would catch me now! Robert Bushell Listings Manager | 24 years with Beresfords

Carl Gable Area Director 24 years with Beresfords

I have many memorable recollections but I suppose my proudest moment was being offered a Directorship position within Beresfords in 1990. At the time, Beresfords had a small network of offices, particularly in the London Borough of Havering and Brentwood. Since then, I have been proud to be part of the expansion of the Group across Essex, none of which could have been achieved without the superb and committed teams we have. Today, I still get the same buzz as I did when I joined back in June 1987 and it is a pleasure dealing with so many clients over so many years. Mike Sayers Sales Director 31 years with Beresfords

My memorable moment was definitely my first day with Beresfords. At the young age of 17 I was really excited to be starting my role within an Estate Agency and as you see by the picture, my mum was just as excited. She ushered me into the garden to pose as though it was my first day of school! At that time I never dreamed I would spend the next two decades working for the same company. Over the years I have dealt with some wonderful people from all walks of life and there is no better feeling than believing you have played some part in helping people move home, which for many can be a life changing experience. Beresfords awarded Feefo Gold Trusted Service award 2018

Beresfords has won the Feefo Gold Service award, an independent seal of excellence that recognises businesses for delivering exceptional experiences, as rated by real customers. Created by Feefo, Trusted Service is awarded only to those businesses that use Feefo to collect genuine ratings and reviews. Those that meet the high standard, based on the number of reviews they have collected, and their average rating, are awarded. A badge of honour, this accreditation remains unique, as it is based purely on the interactions with verified customers. As all reviews are verified as genuine, the accreditation is a true reflection of a business’ commitment to outstanding service. Beresfords met the criteria of collecting at least 50 reviews between January 1st 2017 and December 31st 2017, with a Feefo service rating of between 4.5 and 5.0. Paul Beresford, Chairman of Beresfords Group, commented: “It’s a real honour to receive this award from Feefo. To be recognised for delivering exceptional experiences to our customers is a great achievement. We’ve 28 | Essex Homes & Style

been working hard to ensure our customers receive the best service possible, and being able to listen, understand and respond to their needs has enabled us to improve our offering in 2017. We’re looking forward to another successful year ahead.”

Speaking on this year’s award, Andrew Mabbutt, CEO at Feefo, commented: ‘The Trusted Service award has always been about recognising those companies that go the extra mile. Once again, we have seen many incredible businesses using Feefo to its full potential, to provide truly memorable experiences for their customers – and rightly being awarded with our most prestigious accreditation. I look forward to the continual success of the businesses that work in partnership with Feefo throughout 2018.’ Feefo is a ratings and reviews, and customer analytics platform that provides the tools to collect genuine, purchase-verified reviews on behalf of over 4,000 businesses. Feefo ensures that all feedback is authentic, by matching it to a legitimate transaction; this is in order to increase consumer confidence, and combat the rising issue of fake reviews.

“You commit yourself to such a level where there is no compromise. You give everything you have; everything, absolutely everything. Ayrton Senna

42 | Essex Homes & Style

Extreme McLaren T

he McLaren Senna has been designed, engineered and developed with single-minded purpose: to be the ultimate McLaren track-concentrated car for the road. Legalised for road use, but not sanitised to suit it, the new Ultimate Series deliberately compromises McLaren’s trademark breadth of supercar daily usability; instead it provides the purest connection between driver and car, to deliver the most intense circuit experience of any road McLaren.

Essex Homes & Style | 43

The technical recipe is classic McLaren Automotive supercar, a pedigree established and earned in the short time elapsed since the pioneering sports and supercar company was founded in 2010, but taken to another level entirely in the McLaren Senna. Ultra-lightweight construction, with carbon fibre chassis and body panels. Mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged V8 McLaren engine. Rear wheel drive. Sophisticated race-derived suspension that delivers an unparalleled blend of control and dynamic balance. Electro-hydraulic steering that rewards accurate inputs and gives the purest feedback. And two seats – but with absolute focus on the importance of the one that the driver occupies. The carbon fibre Monocage III chassis that forms the core of the McLaren Senna is a further development of the structure that underpins the McLaren 720S and the strongest monocoque ever built by McLaren for a road-legal vehicle. Every body panel is made from carbon fibre, in line with a relentless focus on the weight of every individual component that has resulted in the McLaren Senna being the lightest road-legal McLaren since the iconic F1 road car, at just 1,198kg. With maximum power of 800PS (789bhp), the McLaren Senna enjoys a power-to-weight ratio of 668PS per tonne. This statistic immediately underlines the performance credentials of the newcomer to the McLaren

Ultimate Series, a product family introduced with the McLaren P1™ that is reserved for the rarest and most extreme McLaren cars. Unsurprisingly, there are strong echoes in the new McLaren Senna of the incredibly focused philosophy behind the McLaren P1™; where the latter was designed to be the best driver’s car on road and track, the ambition for the McLaren Senna is for it to be the best road-legal track car, setting a new benchmark for circuit excellence with track prowess absolutely taking precedence. “The McLaren Senna is a car like no other: the personification of McLaren’s motorsport DNA, legalised for road use but designed and developed from the outset to excel on a circuit. Every element of this new Ultimate Series McLaren has an uncompromised performance focus, honed to ensure the purest possible connection between driver and machine and deliver the ultimate track driving experience in the way that only a McLaren can.” Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive Given the famous name that this new McLaren bears, its unrivalled extreme performance and dynamic excellence should be no surprise. The legendary Formula 1 racing driver was renowned for his exceptional powers of concentration and single-minded focus on being the best on

the track. The McLaren Senna driver is hardwired into the dynamic experience the car delivers. Their connection to the car comes through the steering wheel, the pedals and the seat. Every sensation that comes from driving at speed is precisely communicated, putting the driver in total control. The indomitable spirit of Ayrton Senna has always been alive at McLaren and the McLaren Senna will further amplify his global legacy and link to the McLaren brand.

and performance. The McLaren Senna honours my uncle because it is so utterly dedicated to delivering a circuit experience that allows a driver to be the best they can possibly be. There is an absolute, seamless connection between car and driver and this pure engagement, these sensory cues that a driver responds to and relies upon, ensure an experience so focused and immersive that you are left in awe of the depths of excellence the McLaren Senna possesses.” Bruno Senna, racing driver and McLaren Ambassador

“Our family is extremely proud of the naming of the new Ultimate Series McLaren Senna. This is the first project that really connects with Ayrton’s racing spirit

Visually, the McLaren Senna shocks. The first impression is of an aggressive, unforgiving machine, organic shapes having given way to a design language

that is purposely fragmented in pursuit of absolute performance. With downforce and aerodynamic balance the guiding principles, this car is the purest expression yet of the ‘form follows function’ design philosophy embraced by McLaren. Viewed from above, the body is nature’s most efficient shape – a teardrop – with body components ‘clipped’ onto the cabin to deliver optimal aerodynamic performance. McLaren’s designers went to extremes by cutting open the ‘shrink-wrapped’ body to reduce weight visually and functionally; while recognisably a McLaren in proportional terms, you cannot follow a single line from the front to the rear without it passing through a functional air intake or vent. The third model introduced under the McLaren Track22 business plan, the McLaren Senna will be hand-assembled in England at the McLaren Production Centre. Production will be limited to 500 vehicles, each costing from £750,000 including taxes (UK price) and all already allocated. The ultimate road-legal, track-concentrated McLaren hypercar will make its public debut in March 2018, at the 88th Geneva International Motor Show. It occured over 4 days from 13-16 March 2018 with the flagship Gold Cup on Friday 16 March. £500 million was estimated to be gambled throughout the week. Anyone for Tennis?

The Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament takes place at the SW1 grounds from Monday 2 July to Sunday 15 July and promises to thrill in 2018 with Federer and Nadal back at the top of their games and hopefully seeing the return of Murray and Djokovic back to their pre 2017 form!

Pimms O’Clock?

The Royal Henley Regatta returns to the Thames for its 179th year! The teams from Oxford and Cambridge Universities row a course of approximately 1 mile and 550 yards from Temple Island upstream towards Henley Bridge. Probably one of the oldest boat races in the world – it is an occasion for much frivolity and partying and takes place between Thursday 5 July and Sunday 8 July 2018.

The Sport of Kings

Polo at both Guards and Cowdray Park have their main events as follows: Guards Club – Cartier Queens Cup 17 June 2018, The Royal Windsor Cup 24 June 2018, Hilden Archie David Cup 1st July 2018 and the Guard’s Ladies Charity event on 1 September 2018. Ahoy Shipmate!

Cowes week has been part of the British summer season since 1812 when it originated. Some 14 years later with the support of the Royal Yacht Squadron the event became ‘Royal’ Cowes week and with some 40 daily sailing races, up to 1000 boats and 8,000 competitors it is one of the largest of its kind in the world. It is held on the Solent off the Isle of Wight from Friday 3 August – Friday 10 August 2018.

For a Blast of Speed

The British Grand Prix is held every year as one of the main events of the world Formula 1 Championship calendar events at Silverstone Circuit. Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire has hosted the Grand Prix since 1987 and has a reputation for being ‘insanely fast’. The dates for 2018 are 6-8 July. And for something more sedate what about the Goodwood Revival event held over 3 days each September at Goodwood Circuit since 1998. It is an opportunity for heritage racing cars to showcase the type of cars that would have competed on the Circuit during its hay-day period between 1948-1966. It will be held from Friday 7 – Sunday 9 September 2018.

In an English Country Garden

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show takes place 22-26 May 2018 in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea for a period of 5 days. It is a world renowned show for garden designers, plant specialists, florists and nurseries to come together and present their show stopping displays and award winning gardens to the public. A visit from HM The Queen and other royals is obligatory along with more than a scattering of celebrities. An event that is held in one of the trendiest quarters of London is a must on an English Summers day!

Game Fair

The Game Fair returns to Ragley Hall, Warwickshire to celebrate its Diamond Anniversary, 27-29 July 2018. This festival of the great British countryside, boasts the most comprehensive array of fieldsports in the UK. Including archery, air gunning, falconry, fishing, ferrets, gun dogs, horses & hounds and Europe’s longest clay shooting line.

Glyndebourne

Founded in 1934 by John Christie and his opera singer wife, Audrey Mildmay, Glyndebourne is committed to presenting opera of the highest quality, commissioning new work, developing new talent and reaching new audiences. From rare gems to Glyndebourne classics, Festival 2018 promises to be a vocal and visual feast – the very best in world-class opera, running from 19 May- 26 August.

Spring into Summer The captivating floral theme for the Farrow and Ball new wallpaper collection

72 | Essex Homes & Style

Taking its name from the Greek goddess of fruit and flowers, Hegemone (featured) is wonderfully optimistic and looks almost as if it has been cut from paper. Less rigid and defined than a classic floral pattern, each colourful petal blooms freely in all directions.

Essex Homes & Style | 73

British craftsmen in paint and paper Farrow & Ball, has unveiled its latest collection of new wallpapers. Taking inspiration from the current trends of texture, maximalism and returning to nature, the experts in colour have introduced three contemporary floral wallpapers that are richly textured and uplifting twists on traditional patterns.

For its new collection, Farrow & Ball has experimented with a range of scales exploring the expressive trend of maximalism, creating its largest motif design yet, Helleborus. First drawn with a pipette for a sense of unrestrained fluidity, each petal feels as though it is unfurling on the wall. Latin for the hellebore flower, the organic pattern creates a sense of growth and rejuvenation, transforming the home into a warm and wonderful retreat.

Handcrafted using Farrow & Ball paint and traditional block printing methods, the new collection creates a seamless connection between paint and paper. Each design is available in seven colourways from soft neutrals and muted pastels, to striking colour combinations with metallic accents. Colourways range from bold Stiffkey Blue and Vardo, to earthy tones Cromarty and Mahogany, as well as neutrals Ammonite and Purbeck Stone.

The new wallpapers are now available to purchase from showrooms, stockists and www.farrow-ball.com

Inspired by a brightly coloured fabric found nestled in an old mill, Atacama (featured) has a playful tropical print. Named after the flowering South American desert, the intricate botanical design combines rich textures and delicate patterns.
