Spring/Summer 2013 sees the launch of the Berghaus Vapour Light collection. Developed by our MtnHaus® team and tested by some of our elite athletes, the collection contains world-class kit to help you to achieve incredible goals. It includes the Vapour rucksack, Vapour Claw shoe, Vapour baselayers and the Vapour Storm jacket, the world’s first fully waterproof venting jacket. The legendary Dragon’s Back Race proved the perfect testing ground for the collection. Back in September 2012, athletes from around the world competed in the race that lasts 5 days, covering 200 miles and 45,000 feet of ascent.

With such brutal terrain and conditions for the race, we designed the collection to excel in the face of any punishment. Winner of the original Dragon’s Back Race Helene Whitaker and 7 times winner of the KIMM/OMM elite Steve Birkinshaw both entered the race as Berghaus athletes and Steve crossed the line in first place wearing Berghaus Vapour Light kit.

Autana Expedition Leading British adventurer and Berghaus athlete Leo Houlding led a successful expedition into the depths of the Amazonian Jungle, Venezuela along with his close-knit team of climbers, including Berghaus athletes Sean Leary, Jason Pickles and Alastair Lee. The team embarked on the ambitious and complex journey to make a first ascent on Cerro Autana (1,400m), one of the Amazon’s most remote and sacred mountains. Cerro Autana is a spectacular rock face situated deep in the Amazon Jungle. The local Piaroa Indians
revere it as the stump of the tree of life from which the fruits of all life grew. After seeking a blessing from the local shaman and partaking in a memorable Yopo ceremony, the team accompanied by the Piaroa porters began a four-day trek through virgin jungle to establish a trail and base camp below the rarely visited east face of Autana. 100% humidity, 35 degree heat and torrential downpours combined with mosquitoes, flies and ants made for an irritating backdrop against the more serious menace of tarantulas, scorpions and deadly

snakes. Part way up the face, the team reached the magnificent Autana Caves. The highest elevated cave system in the world, if it weren’t for their extremely inaccessible position they would surely be one of the wonders of the world. A couple of hundred metres of more vertical jungle eventually led the team to the elusive summit, not visited for at least a decade. The team rappelled the line of the climb, leaving only their rappel station behind. Tepuy climbing transpired to be everything they hoped for.

The Autana expedition provided a unique climate in which to put our new ARGENTIUM® baselayers through their paces.
