It was a coincidental meeting halfway around the world that sparked the idea for Daniel Wellington. On this trip, our founder Filip Tysander met an intriguing British gentleman with impeccable yet unpretentious style. The man had a particular fondness for wearing his vintage watches on old, weathered NATO straps. His name? Daniel Wellington. Inspired by his new acquaintanceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s timeless style, Filip decided to create his own line of watches. Minimalistic and refined, the classic design with interchangeable straps truly has wide-ranging appeal. Now a few years later, this design is still an important part of what makes Daniel Wellington so special.

There are two types of people in the world: Italians and those who wish they were. We make no excuse for being the latter. And nowhere is Italy – the way we like it – more felt than here, on this mythical stretch of coast from the ancient city of Siracusa and down to the hilltop town of Noto. It is dreamy and exotic, sitting against a backdrop of turquoise Ionian waters, lush valleys and crumbling facades.

T H AT SL OW OF F-SE A SON BE AT Sicily is not an undiscovered paradise; visitors have been flocking to its soft beaches each summer for centuries. But Sicily in the off-season is. An elegant strip of coast from Siracusa to Noto in particular charmed us with its warmth and calm – and an approach to life that is refreshingly uncomplicated.

The weather during our off-season visit was moody and unpredictable. It’s easy to be beautiful when the sun is shining – and Sicily certainly is. But when it rains in these timeworn towns, the effect is seductive. The tourists have yet to arrive, creating an alluring absence of hustle and bustle. It allows us to explore, wander and stop to admire its ancient magic. The town of Noto has just one main street and we walked slowly – shoulder-to-shoulder under an umbrella – to take in its chic restaurants, gelaterias and the grand cathedral with views of the Noto Valley. This valley is our next stop and it’s made up of a series of rustic, rolling hills that look like a Mediterranean dream. It has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. We continue north 30 kilometers to Siracusa – particularly to the small

island of Ortigia – and it doesn’t take us long to understand why the conquering Greeks considered it

the most stunning of all its cities. Everywhere we looked, there was the Ionian Sea, old fishing boats and dramatic churches built by the Greeks and Romans.

The Baroque sandstone houses are beautiful and battered, having been exposed to sea winds for centuries. Many of them sit just meters from the water, enjoying one of life’s truly great vistas. And pairs of ubiquitous green shutters adorn almost every one, giving the town an elegant uniformity. The rich bounty of this landscape means that food is the theme that ties our Sicilian experience together. The fresh fish and local flavors – almonds, pistachios, olives and ricotta cheese – make their way into every meal. Actually, this entire island is like a big plate – of history, beaches, alleys, markets, and lemon trees – all arranged in a somewhat chaotic yet beautiful order. The taste of Sicily stays with you for a long time. We’ll be back again – just before the tourists arrive or just after they’ve left. Off-season is our kind of beat.

#sicily #siracusa #dwplacestobe #anticomercato Antico Mercato is the old market of Siracusa – where mustached men stand behind icy tables of calamari, tuna, sea bass and sole. As you pass under their fraying awnings, they shout “signora! signore!” and give you their best sales pitch in Italian. We don’t understand a word, but we’re convinced. And we’re hungry. But where and how do we go about this? Then we realize we don’t need any pretentious recipes. The meal practically plans itself in your head, the ingredients all lined up and piled high in front of you. Lemons, oranges, apples and pears in bright shades come from farms just kilometers from here. As do the eggplant and zucchini, which make a perfect side dish when grilled and sprinkled with olive oil from a seller a few stalls away. And then there’s the fish, of course. It comes out of the Ionian waters off the coast and straight here – fresh off the boat, so to speak.

THE ART OF IDLENESS IN ORTIGIA

It feels as if around each new turn in its labyrinth of streets is a relic of a Grecian or Roman temple – built for empires that no longer exist. filled with quiet streets and alleys. Exploring these narrow passageways that suddenly curve and change direction means getting lost – and that’s the point. It rewards you with hidden courtyards and the sea, which is never far away. This is a place where photos need no filter. Filled with palm trees and peeling facades, Ortigia is lovely in its aging imperfection. It is calm with the feeling that even Siracusans don’t have much of a schedule to keep. Here, you can simply let the hours pass by unnoticed. A cone of gelato helps.

WHERE COFFEE RULES

#caffè #dwplacestobe #simplepleasures Like the rest of Italy, Sicilians take their coffee seriously. And there are a few simple yet necessary rules to follow unless you want to look like un turista. Grab a spot at the counter (you never sit for a coffee in Italy) and ask the barista for your favorite. Cappuccino is only ordered in the mornings and Italians never use the word espresso, a technical term for how the coffee is prepared. What you want is un caffè. Feel free to soak up the local culture for a few moments, but just a few. Because the last rule is to drink quickly and move on. There will be another coffee stop soon. A

#ortigia #dwplacestobe #viacavour Siracusa is a town of Catholic faith and the golden limestone Duomo cathedral in Ortigia stands as a grandiose testament: a former Greek

temple for Athena, the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration – and olive oil, strangely enough. A column from the original 5th century BC structure can be seen on its left side, proof of a long past that’s hard to wrap our minds around. A few moments of admiration are enough before we turn to another kind of religion we care deeply about – shopping. Via Cavour starts a few blocks north of the piazza, and is the best shopping street in Ortigia. The narrow, pedestrian path has independent clothing shops with carefully curated racks and design shops with modern Italian pieces for the home – the right kind of souvenir.

The hotel was originally a tuna factory built by monks. But after decades of use it was abandoned – until Laura’s great grandfather bought the property. The family came for day trips each season to enjoy the soft sand and the blue-green waters. When friends started coming and adored the place too, they decided this

of its honey-hued architecture and cobblestone streets come into view. After a devastating earthquake in 1693, the best architects and artists of the time rebuilt most of the city. The result is a Baroque masterpiece that needs no filter and an aimless stroll up and down its sloping streets reveals stylish restaurants, antique shops, landscaped squares and views of the valley below. Long a favorite of Italians in the know, Noto is the place you sneak off to for a night out. The meal will be simple but the surroundings elaborate.

Inside these houses there are concrete walls and stone floors that guarantee cooler conditions when the Sicilian sun is blazing. Their features – old, irregular wooden beamsor a slate shower – are as unique as the houses themselves. But best of all, staying in a local home away from home offers an authenticity that simply cannot be measured.

Our preference is usually to rent a house, but when we found the beautiful Musciara Resort in Siracusa with its sandy private beach, crystal clear waters and perfect mix of boutique luxury and the heritage of the port city, we made an exception. The countryside that surrounds Noto is filled with old stone homes that are perched up high with killer views. They’re the homes of prominent Milanese and Romans, who figured out long ago that the Noto Valley was a tranquil place to disconnect from the world – and reconnect with nature. Any of these homes or apartments make for a perfect rental, especially in the off-season. The beaches and the town are close. But if you don’t care for either, you can pick a spot on the veranda to take in a view of the sea or fertile valleys.

Tucked into the cellar of a large Baroque palace is Manna Noto, renowned for putting the unexpected on the plate. It has been open for just over a year, but in that time has become a favorite for globetrotting visitors. The Nicolaci Palace cellar it calls home is original and required to stay that way. But every other element of the dining experience is modern and inventive. The food here is not Sicilian but rather Italian, drawing from culinary traditions all over the country and adding a touch of international influence. It’s not fusion, it’s global. And it comes directly from Chef Gioachino Brambilla’s years in the kitchen, including 10 spent working in Japan. “We don’t make any Sicilian

food because they make all the same things here,” Gioachino says. “We try to do something different,” says co-owner and longtime friend Roberta Assolari. “We use the same products but we want to offer something different,” adds manager Manuela Alberti. Guests who know good food cozy up to the metal bar for drinks or settle in for a multicourse meal at one of Manna Noto’s ceramic tables. They come for the surroundings, but stay for the food. And Gioachino’s passion can be felt on every plate. “The way you make the food is a kind of promise,” he says. “They expect something different. They come here to eat and they say ‘oh what a beautiful place. You don’t usually eat very well in a beautiful place. They are quite surprised at the quality of the food here. It’s a responsibility.”

Sicily is my home. Everytime I look around, I feel lucky to live here because there are so many attractions and experiences that it seems to be many different places at the same time. When I snap, I let myself be inspired by the moment.
