Charity Cup
making a difference in the LOWCOUNTRY T
his past May, the generous Berkeley Hall membership contributed over $138,000 at our recent Charity Cup event. From 2008 through 2016, the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation has supported numerous local charities in the Greater Bluffton community and has made 70 grants totaling more than $700,000 to fund projects that will improve the lives of Bluffton’s most vulnerable residents. On behalf of the BHCF, we thank you for your generous support and wanted to take this opportunity to share a few stories from several grantee organizations BHCF has supported. It is through stories like these that we can begin to see the impact of our community giving. ~ Paulette Maehara, BHCF
HEROES ON HORSEBACK Ana is a 12-year old horse lover who found her passion thanks to Heroes on Horseback. She also has Mitochondrial Disease. She began riding with Heroes at the age of three, after a neighbor told her mother about the program. Even with so many issues associated with her disease including seizures, and feeding tubes, Ana was obsessed with horses. During hospital stays, she often found comfort by playing with toy horses. Since riding with Heroes, her mother, Emmy, says Ana’s legs have grown stronger and she is now able to walk without leg braces. Ana enjoyed riding during the scheduled sessions and wanted private lessons but other riding programs were concerned about her seizures, and the family could not afford the lessons. Together, Emmy and Heroes found a way for Ana to take private lessons. The family even organized a fundraiser for Heroes on Horseback. Today, Ana has gained so much from riding with Heroes. She is happy, has a very strong upper body, wonderful balance, and can ride independently at the walk, trot, and canter. Her desire is to ride in the Paralympics.

“Heroes is about focusing on the positives and things we CAN do and forgetting about things we cannot change.”
BLUFFTON SELF HELP Myrtle has lived in Bluffton for as long as she can remember. She survives on less than $800 per month from social security benefits and stretches it as far as she can to pay for her mortgage and utilities. She and her neighbor come twice each week to visit the food pantry. Myrtle lives in an older mobile home with aluminum siding. As summer temperatures increased, so did her electric bill. One neared $400 - half her monthly income! If she paid the electric bill, she couldn’t pay her mortgage and water bill and afford personal health care items. She was shaken with worry until she remembered Bluffton Self Help offers more than just food and clothing services and was relieved to receive assistance.
THE CHILDREN'S CORNER “My husband and I have five children ranging from 21 to four-years-old. All five have been cared for by The Children’s Center. We tried different daycares before, but had never felt at ease like we do with the staff at The Children’s Center. On top of the staff being absolutely wonderful, it has also been very affordable.”
{
{
“Daycare is tough on any income, but when you are raising five children and working as hard as you possibly can, it can really be difficult.”
“I am very thankful for this assistance, so I could work and have somewhere safe and reliable for my children. We are sad to have to say good-bye as Austin will begin pre-k in August, and I appreciate everyone that I have ever encountered in this school.”
MEMORY MATTERS Don and Carol found Memory Matters in 2014 when they moved to Bluffton from Georgia. They moved because an F-4 tornado devastated their small house and they lost everything. A friend offered housing in Bluffton, and so they came. Don appeared on our doorstep with a photo album that chronicled the devastation. Carol was only 66 and diagnosed with dementia. Don had no clue what that meant. He has come to our men’s support groups to get resources for the journey ahead. Carol started in the Connections Program, designed to help younger clients with a new diagnosis. Don has become a wonderful advocate for men caring for their wives. He is grateful for the support he has received, and this is his way of giving back.
T
hese are just a few of the real life stories that occur every day and the funds distributed by BHCF have helped make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate in our community. These organizations were among the 17 local area nonprofits that received a grant from BHCF in 2016. Monies raised from the May Charity Cup events will be used to fund the 2017 grant cycle which has already begun, with invitations extended to area nonprofits to apply for grants. The application is available on the public section of the website www.berkeleyhallclub.com/charityfund.php). For questions about the grant process, contact Patricia Jackson at BHcharitablefoundation@gmail.com. 12-year-old Ana, shown riding with Heroes on Horseback
Thank you for your response to the recent Charity Cup survey. We appreciate your feedback and suggestions and will be reviewing this information in the coming months.

Keep Your Landscape Healthy The Importance of Soil Analysis by Kayne Hoecht, Director of Community Grounds
There are many ways to check the health of your landscape to ensure your investment is being provided with optimal levels of plant nutrients. Periodic soil analysis is a very cost effective way to achieve optimal plant health results. Many options are available to obtain soil test results. User-friendly test kits that can be used many times over, are readily available at garden centers. These kits are a simple way to make an educated adjustment to soil fertility. Very accurate and thorough tests can be obtained by submitting samples to laboratories that specialize in agricultural soil tests. These laboratories test specific elements and characteristics of soils that aid in proper soil/plant health diagnosis. Laboratory samples can be taken by homeowners and landscape service providers, but following sampling instructions is important. Instructions for soil sampling is available at each lab website. Once results of the soil tests are returned, many laboratories give specific instructions on long term soil remediation. Landscape service providers may then use these instructions to optimize plant health. Many different elements are required for plant growth, but these are broken down into two groups, being macro and micro nutrients. Three of the main macro nutrients are normally the three numbers on a bag of fertilizer such as 16-4-8. Micro nutrient requirements are usually met in native soils as they are only needed in very minute amounts. The lack of any single element to a plant can cause a domino effect resulting in growth issues. Optimal plant nutrients are essential to aid a plant in growth and its defense mechanisms. Plants also have an optimal PH range that differs, depending on the plant. A soil PH that is too high or too low will need to be properly adjusted, as it will not allow proper nutrient uptake, resulting in visual symptoms. Lab results can also explain PH levels and give solutions to bring the soil back to the proper level. Soil science is very complicated, but lab results take out the guesswork. When problems in the landscape arise, these types of soil tests are a great starting point. This management practice is very similar to the lab results medical doctors put to use for diagnosis, such as blood testing. Healthy and happy landscapes are achieved when proper nutrients, water and sunlight are provided.

A SUDDEN LIGHT by Garth Stein Monday, Sept. 12 @ 3pm, Ladies’ Locker Room The best-selling author of “The Art of Racing in the Rain” presents a longawaited new novel in which a boy trying to save his parents’ marriage uncovers a vast legacy of family secrets. In the summer of 1990, 14-year-old Trevor Riddell gets his first glimpse of Riddell House. His bankrupt parents have begun a trial separation, and his father has brought Trevor there to join forces with his sister, Serena and sell the property for development. The novel centers on four generations of a once wealthy timber family, fallen from grace; a majestic mansion crumbling into the bluff overlooking Puget Sound, and a love affair so powerful it reaches across the planes of existence ~ Review: Amazon / Google
THE STORY OF A LOST CHILD by Elena Ferrante Monday, OCT. 3 @ 3pm, Ladies’ Locker Room Elena and Lila, the two heroines of Elena Ferrante’s dazzling Neapolitan quartet of novels, are one of those unforgettable pairs who define each other and take their place in our collective imagination as a matched set — like Prince Hal and Falstaff, Settembrini and Naphta, Vladimir and Estragon, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Thelma and Louise. With the three earlier installments and this stunning final volume, “The Story of the Lost Child,” Ms. Ferrante has turned the stories of Lila and Elena into an extraordinary epic that bridges six decades and unfolds into a portrait of a neighborhood, a city in transition and a country lurching through the second half of the 20th century into the next. GOLF CORNER
The Golf Corner
Adam Kushner, Director of Golf
The heat should begin to subside in the coming weeks, and with the golf courses in great shape it should set us up for a great fall golf season. We are going to have a lot going on this fall including a full tournament schedule and the drainage project. Having said that, tee times and pace of play are going to be at a premium this fall. Our pace of play policy calls for four-hour rounds. Please make sure to keep up with the group in front of you, and if one of the members of the professional staff asks you to speed up, please adhere to their request. Our goal is to make sure that everyone on the golf course is able to play an enjoyable round of golf. As for tee times, one of the best parts about Berkeley Hall is that there are many different member games to play in. Most of these games set up tee times 30 days in advance. I would ask that you please modify the number of reserved tee times as soon as you know how many tee times that you will need for any given day. Clean Your Closets For Charity Berkeley Hall will be hosting a charity tournament for The First Tee of the Lowcountry on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The First Tee is the golf industry’s initiative to introduce youngsters not only to the game itself, but to its character. The Hilton Head chapter, which formally opened in May, now has 167 youths in its Life Skills classes. We invite members to clean out your closets (and garages) and donate any gently used golf clothing and equipment to a good cause. Donations will be accepted at the Pro Shop.
Drainage Project The drainage project is officially underway. Each day, the golf shop will inform members about the closed hole on the Foretees homepage and through the daily course condition email report. Golf Course Maintenance will make sure the cart paths are accessible. Please use the cart path to move past the closed hole each day. One of the major questions during the drainage project is how to post your score. We hope to have 17 holes open during most of the project. In order to post an 18-hole score, golfers will take par plus their handicap on the closed hole. For example, hole 1 on the North Course is the #11 ranked handicap hole for men. If your handicap is 10 or below, you will record a par on hole 1. If your handicap is 11-28, you will record a bogey on hole 1. If your handicap is 29 or higher, you will record a double bogey on hole 1.

OLYMPIAN S
tephanie Meadow’s Olympic announcement came late, as the Berkeley Hall Golf Tour Professional made her July commitment to represent Ireland in the 2016 games. Her path to Rio led her to become one of the 60 elite women players to participate in the Olympics inaugural women’s tournament.
{
At the time this publication went to press, Stephanie was in the height of the competition, as we watched her play on the world stage, representing Ireland.
“To be in the environment with players from all over the world, you don’t get that anywhere else.” — Stephanie Meadow
The Northern Irish professional golfer played for the University of Alabama and made her professional debut at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst. It’s not every day we have an Olympian in our midst. Our Berkeley Hall golf tour professional returned here to prepare for the games, the final weeks before her departure.
{
Adrian Morris and Adam Kushner with Stephanie
“Berkeley Hall Club is immensely proud of Stephanie’s call to represent Ireland,” said Adrian Morris, General Manager & COO. “Her tremendous passion and extraordinary ability help shine an international beacon on our exceptional golf community.” For the game of golf, it’s an extraordinary addition to the Olympic line-up and for Stephanie, another opportunity for her to display her incredible talent and dedication to the game. “At the end of the day being in the Olympic Village environment is special. I hope I learn some things from all the other athletes.” We have no doubt she will.

Dear Berkeley Hall Members
W
e would like to express our sincere appreciation for the outstanding support and financial contributions we received for the 17th Annual Players Amateur. It was a great week and it would not Steve Wilmot have happened without the planning and hard work performed by the Members and Staff of Berkeley Hall to make the event so special for the contestants and sponsors. Adrian and his Staff went out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable. Adam Kushner and the Professional Golf Staff provided needed and welcomed support. Chris Young and his team did a remarkable job preparing and maintaining the course. Ashleigh Whitmore and the hospitality staff took great care of us and served up a fantastic menu all week long. Finally, we give a very special thank you to all the Members who volunteered their time and opened their homes to contestants.
It has always been our goal to host the best amateur golf tournament in the country and at the same time, raise much needed funds to cover tournament expenses and donate any excess to local charities. This is a challenge we face every year and rely on your generous financial support from the purchase of sponsor packages and individual contributions. The Players Amateur is a wonderful event that brings national attention to the Club and showcases the community and unparalleled golf facilities. It was another very successful tournament thanks to those who opened your homes to players, volunteered your time and provided much needed financial support. We could not have done it without you! Thanks again and we look forward to working with you during the 2017 Players Amateur being held July 11-16. Steve Wilmot

PLAYERS AMATEUR
“Where the world’s best amateurs come to play...” CHENG JIN WINS THE 17 TH PLAYERS AMATEUR By Angela McSwain Beijing, China native Cheng Jin is the 2016 Players Amateur Champion. He joins an impressive list of past champions including Rickie Fowler and Bill Haas. The incoming University of Southern California freshman started the final round in the lead but bogied the first three holes giving several others a chance at the win. “I had an awful start. I just tried to calm myself down and stick to my game,” Jin told reporters. He lost the lead to University of Alabama’s Davis Riley after Riley birdied number 9 and for the next several holes, the lead changed several times with Patrick Martin, Travis Smyth and Harrison Endycott all seeing their names at the top of the leaderboard. 18-year-old Jin regained the lead after he birdied the 16th hole and went to 12 under. His next birdie on number 17 secured his win. Australian National Team member Endycott shot six under for the day and ended the tournament tied for second place with Vanderbilt’s Patrick Martin. After his round, Endycott told reporters he was disappointed with his second place finish but was happy with the way he played, “I just managed to get the ball in the right places today. There are some really tough pins and I managed really, really well to always give myself a scoring opportunity. I was very proud of myself the way I did that today.” Martin told reporters his game is in the right spot, “I have been playing well all summer. I have been knocking on the door. This week I put myself in position again and each week I continue to feel more comfortable in that spot.” Jin’s win earns him an exemption into the 2017 RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, April 10-16 over the famed Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island. The 18-year-old is looking forward to the new experience, “It will be my first PGA TOUR event besides The Masters, I am really looking forward to it.” He received an exemption into the 2016 Masters after winning the 2015 Asia-Pacific Amateur.

GOLF MAINTENANCE
Completion of Course Aeration & North Course Drainage Update by Chris Young, Director of Golf Course Maintenance
The North and South golf courses performed their final aeration on this year’s calendar. The North was aerated the first week of August, and the South performed its final aeration the week of August 23. The North course will also be performing a second fairway aeration. In addition, the Learning Center fairways will also be aerated. The South course completed its second fairway aeration in July. The aeration tines used on the South course were smaller in size (3/8 inch). The smaller tine is historically used during the late August aeration to prevent lengthy healing time, and ensure the putting surface is completely healed with cooler temperatures approaching in September.
N O RT H C OU R SE DR AI N AGE P R O JECT The North course drainage and enhancement project, is underway and proceeding smoothly. We’re happy to report that once completed, members can enjoy dry playing conditions year-round. We’re excited to share our progress and will be providing timely updates. Our staff is responsible for the moving of sand for the trenches, hauling of spoils from the excavated drain lines, removal and return of sod from installed drain lines, and tracking of all irrigation lines. In addition, Palmetto Electric and Hargray will mark all electric and fiber optic line coming from the halfway house and the Fazio Room. We are working closely with Berkeley Hall’s Golf and Greens Committee to develop a plan to use spoils from the trench lines to construct a few new senior and women tee complexes for members to enjoy on the North course. The remaining spoils will be relocated to the native area left of the eighth hole, and leveled out with love grass seeded to re-establish the area. We will work closely with Adam Kushner, Director of golf, to keep members informed on a daily basis as to which hole on the North Course will be closed for play. View the project’s progress and timeline on our website’s Superintendent’s Corner blog.
PRA CTICE FA CILITY TEE S URFA CE UPD ATE The practice facility tees have completely recovered from the overseed transition, and the large divot patterns that occurred this past winter and spring. Going forward, the maintenance department has developed procedures to speed up the recovery time during late spring transitioning. In early May, once all of the tee surface has been used on one tee, and the hitting station moved to the other tee, the maintenance department will induce the transitioning by applying an herbicide to kill the overseeded rye grass. Once the ryegrass is removed, the staff will begin to sod any large divot patterns, and apply multiple applications of foliar and granular fertilizers. The procedure will allow the recently used practice tee to recover prior to the other tee surface being completely used. This good proactive plan will help maintain a good hitting surface for members and guests during the early summer months.
THE PLAY ERS A M ATEUR I would like to congratulate Wayne English, South Course superintendent, Dustin Nemenz, South Course assistant superintendent, and the entire golf maintenance staff on another successful year of hosting The Players Amateur tournament. Wayne and his staff did a remarkable job preparing the course for tournament play. The South course experienced two heavy storms during the week of the tournament, and resulted in four downed trees. Wayne and his staff performed under great pressure to clean up all the storm debris and maintain impeccable tournament conditions.

OUR LOWCOUNTRY SALT MARSHES
O
WHERE THE RIVERS MEET THE SEA
ne of the most beautiful and diverse scenes that comprise the landscape of our Lowcountry living, the salt marsh is the transitional area where the rivers meet the sea. Comprised of intertidal water bodies in which salinity can range from near ocean strength, our salt marshes are one of the most biologically productive ecosystems on earth. While salt marshes provide nursery grounds for many species of birds fish, vital wildlife habitat, they also provide services to us residents, including flood control, nursery grounds for commercially and recreationally important fish and shellfish species, and as a filter for removal of sediments and pollution from the water. Sweetgrass, is one of the many upland plants that form salt marsh buffer zones. Many know of its cultural significance as the Gullah community utilizes it to create Sweetgrass baskets. Whether enjoying a golden sunset over the marshes or an early morning view, our salt marshes frame the backdrop of our Lowcountry setting. Immerse yourself with our guided two-hour nature kayak tours, scheduled every Monday from 9-11am and on Fridays, from 3-5pm. Led by Captain Eric Burns, a trained interpretative naturalist. We also have a casual group of Berkeley Hall kayakers if you have your own and would like to join in. Contact your concierge for details and to schedule a tour.
