SUMMER FUN

No matter how many times we embark on the journey of bringing a world premiere musical to life, I’m always astonished at how long it takes, and how labor intensive it is. And how thrillingly transcendent it is when all the pieces finally come together.

I first encountered this Galileo in the middle of a blizzard in a rehearsal room in New York City in the winter of 2019. By that summer, this illustrious team was in residence at New York Stage and Film, and since then, we have been on the long but productive road that brings us to today. Throughout this iterative process, there have been workshops, with and without actors; page by page analysis of story arcs and character relationships; music sessions; movement vocabulary development; and design treatments — and all of that was just to get us to the point where we could begin actual rehearsals for the production itself here in Berkeley!

Each step required a different structure, different combinations of people to engage, different physical needs to be met. (Do we just need music stands and a piano? Must we have stand-in pieces for scenic elements to inform the development of the choreography? At what stage is an audience useful and informative?)

I am so moved when I think about how long these artists have been committed to the telling of this particular story, and the thoughtful, rigorous efforts they have been engaged in over multiple years to bring this piece here to us, for this next phase in its journey of becoming.

You are the first audiences to see this, and your experience of it will be instrumental in the ongoing work that Michael, Danny, Zoe, Michael, David, Brian, the designers, cast, musicians, and crew will continue to do. Welcome to the much-anticipated world premiere of Galileo! When I first read the script, I was struck by its cultural resonance with the Bay Area — the story of a technological and social disruptor and maverick, fighting for truth and justice, who ultimately changed humanity’s perception of the world. Perhaps that is why Berkeley Rep has returned to Galileo’s story every 20 years or so. In 1980, Bertolt Brecht’s Galileo directed by Berkeley Rep founder Michael Liebert opened the new Thrust Stage (now the Peet’s Theatre). We then produced The Life of Galileo as the opening production of the 1999/2000 season. And now, at a time when questions of truth and power remain at the fore, we tell his story again as an original rock musical, continuing Berkeley Rep’s legacy of new works.

As we approach our season finale, Octavio Solis’ Mother Road, we are excited for the upcoming 2024/25 season, which begins in September. Bringing Berkeley Rep Magic to the Classroom

Berkeley Rep’s commitment to the art of storytelling has always extended beyond the stage, and there is no better place to see the transformative power of theatre than in a classroom with a Berkeley Rep teaching artist. Berkeley Rep’s In-School Residency programming fosters creativity, enriches understanding of class curriculum, unlocks vital confidence and communication skills, all while having fun.

With Berkeley Rep teaching artists in classrooms across 5 Bay Area counties, each multi-week workshop contains core curriculum which is then expanded and molded to fit each classroom’s specific needs. High school classes can choose from workshops in acting, playwriting, stage combat, and more. For younger artists in grades TK–5, our Story Builders workshop introduces students to the fundamentals of theatre while creating a play based on a story read in class. Lastly, just as the shows on Berkeley Rep’s stages challenge audiences to reflect on their own perspectives, relationships, and emotions, our Change Makers workshop for grades 6–8 creates avenues for students to find their voice and activate their creativity to address real-world problems.

Berkeley Rep is so proud to announce its 2024/25 season!

The lineup: Mexodus , a hip-hop, live-looping musical from Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson about the Underground Railroad that went south into Mexico; The Matchbox Magic Flute, Mary Zimmerman’s new theatrical adaptation of Mozart’s beloved opera; direct from Broadway, Jocelyn Bioh’s acclaimed comedy, Jaja’s African Hair Braiding ; the world premiere adaptation by Keith Bunin of Ali Benjamin’s New York Times bestselling novel, The Thing About Jellyfish; Olivier Award-winner Conor McPherson’s stunning adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya , starring Hugh Bonneville; Tectonic Theater Project’s critically acclaimed new play, Here There Are Blueberries by Moisés Kaufman and Amanda Gronich; and the world premiere of Jiehae Park’s lyrical the aves. Casting and full creative teams to be announced a later date.

Galileo reconsiders everything we know about the scientific genius who mapped the sky, shedding modern light on the themes and arguments engendered by his radical discoveries.

Comprising lyricists and composers Michael Weiner and Zoe Sarnak, book writer Danny Strong, and director Michael Mayer, the creative team brought their rock-androll sensibility to a story that might play quite differently than what we were taught in school. These creative visionaries sat down with Berkeley Rep staff to discuss the musical’s origins, the central debate of truth versus power, and its contemporary relevance.

ON THE GENESIS OF GALILEO :

Michael Weiner: The way that this started — and it feels almost cliché to say — I was in a bookstore, and I came upon a book about Galileo and started reading through it. Almost immediately I thought it could be a great musical. I had known the basic history, but as I was sifting through the pages, I felt that there was an opportunity to explore the topic in a way that could speak to a contemporary audience — something that hadn’t been done before with this material. Danny and I have been friends for a long time starting back in Los Angeles and one day, we were talking about what we wanted to work on, and I said to him that I wanted to do a rock musical about Galileo.

Danny Strong: And I said, well, can I write it?

ON THE MUSICAL’S CENTRAL THEMES:

DS: Denying truth for power was sort of the underlying theme and idea that we wanted to explore. It’s such a thrilling, relevant debate — dramatizing how a global institution could literally deny facts for their own benefit. It's ultimately a ‘power corrupts’ tale, which is a very old theme, but a theme that is extremely relevant and important today where the truth is whatever a politician wants it to be. When we realized this would be a guiding principle, the show started exploding in relevance and importance to us.

ON GALILEO ’S RESONANCE NOW:

Michael Mayer: Over the past several years, it feels like we've been entrenched in an existential crisis regarding truth and how we navigate it amidst a world of fake news. Now we are facing the very real possibility of heading back into this crisis and that is truly terrifying. Galileo's story prompts us to consider the price of truth and the battle of ideologies we're all living through. There seems to be a significant portion of the American population yearning to turn back the clock. It wouldn't be surprising if some suggested that the Earth being round is just a theory. This is the world we find ourselves in. The Galileo story resonates because it addresses these issues. The intersection of faith, science, politics, and policy is particularly pronounced in American culture today, echoing Galileo's struggle.

ON ART AND SCIENCE:

Zoe Sarnak: My background academically is that I'm a math and science kid. I went to undergrad at Harvard for molecular and cellular bio, and my dad's a mathematician. When I started writing music, it wasn't like I was drawn to writing musicals where molecules sang to each other, but I have always felt really drawn to the fact that there's something shared between people who search for academic truths and artists. We sort of think the same way. We're dreamers. Then, given my background with rock music, there was something about getting the call to co-write a rebellious rock-and-roll Galileo that I was like… I think this is the greatest. It's every entry point I could ask for.

CONVERSATION WITH THE CREATIVE TEAM

ON GALILEO’S COMPLEXITY:

DS: When I first started reading about him, he instantly reminded me of Steve Jobs — how brilliant he was but also how difficult he could be. For me dramatically, I loved it. I loved that he wasn’t just this lovely, sweet guy, but that he was a really difficult and complicated personality. And I think, at times, people like this have qualities that will change the world. Galileo’s stubbornness makes him incapable of denying the truth. He’s not capable of staying silent. To have someone so heroic, and their heroism is driven by their flaws, is such a gift to a dramatist.

MW: And it made perfect sense to us that the musical language of the show would be contemporary. Galileo had a rock star personality — brazen, unpredictable, and at times, difficult. He was the kind of guy who would smash a guitar.

ON THE DESIGN:

MM: Our intent with the design in this production is to embrace the dichotomy between the historical events and the rock music that gives voice to the emotional lives of the characters living those events. In every department, my hope is that the audience will experience both the formal nature of the history and the anarchic nature of the rock and roll emotional journey.

ON VIRGINIA, GALILEO’S DAUGHTER:

ZS: We love Virginia. I'm a big Virginia fan. We wanted to look at a relationship between her and her father where we can see that she has the same DNA as him — that sort of fiery passion and that desire to search for the stars — and that she's even sort of a sounding board for him. And then see that, societally, there aren't options for her to feel that way.

ON PREMIERING AT BERKELEY REP:

MM: The Berkeley audience is particularly great because they have either actively sought out or have become accustomed over the years to appreciate new works and alternative storytelling methods, whether it's in musicals or straight plays. The narrative function in a theatrical space and the wide range of methodologies used to convey these stories have been challenging Berkeley audiences since the beginning. This show is no exception. I'm excited because I believe Berkeley, with its highly educated, politically engaged, and spiritually attuned audience, is an ideal setting for our experiment as we push the boundaries of traditional storytelling.

THE POWER AND THE GLORY

The Rise and Reign of the Catholic Church

The story of the Catholic Church is a story of power in its myriad complicated forms: spiritual, political, cultural. Seen by many as the oldest functioning institution on Earth, the Church’s history spans centuries and continents, from the Church’s foundation during the life of Christ to today’s Vatican City. As described in Catholic tradition, the founding was a transaction of power: Jesus said to the Apostle Peter, “I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven” (Matthew 16:19). Jesus had established Heaven’s domain on Earth, the Church, and the keys were held by Peter the Apostle, the first pope. This Petrine primacy — Peter’s preëminence passing down through each successive pope — became the bedrock of the Church’s power.

In the first centuries CE, the Roman Empire kept its distance from early Christianity, with Roman officials considering the budding religion a threat to the state. However, the 4th century brought radical change in the person of Emperor Constantine, who decriminalized Christianity and opened the door for it to become the official religion of the Empire. With his imperial rule, Constantine turned the hostility between the Roman state and Christianity into a powerful union, setting a precedent for a government inseparable from its religious institutions. It wasn’t long before the influence of the papacy rivaled the political power of any other world government.

The pope’s direct sovereignty encompassed a wide portion of Italy known as the Papal States, but the papacy’s reach was far larger. With a far-ranging patronage and the strategic creation of alliances, the pope effectively ruled over huge swaths of Europe during the Middle Ages. For Catholics, he was an all-powerful religious icon—the sole intermediary between Heaven and Earth. For others, he was a dangerous political foe. The political might of the Church at that time can’t be overstated: the pope’s power extended far past the performance of religious rites to dictatorial control over his clergy, citizens, and the vast European expanse of Latin Christendom (the states united by shared Christian belief). To oppose the Church was to draw the fury of Christendom, a force exploited by the pope in building a military force that would defend and expand the Church, with the pope himself effectively serving as its commander-in-chief.

Additionally, the Church of the Middle Ages was a primary provider of education and the arts. Educational pursuits were foundational to the mission of the Dominican Order, and monasteries became central locations for the education of young boys from wealthy families to prepare them for a life in the Church. This schooling followed the Greek liberal arts model in which students received education in a variety of fields: Latin, rhetoric, logic, geometry, arithmetic, astronomy, and music. Many of the early European universities were founded by the Roman church and served as centers both to educate and to spread religious teachings. Art flourished under the Church, too; medieval art incorporated Christian images and symbols, often commissioned by affluent patrons and churches. Cathedrals themselves were great works of art, designed with enormous precision and an eye for spectacle and functionality alike.

While the pope maintained significant power as the sovereign ruler of the Papal States, figurehead of Christendom, military leader, and supporter of the arts and sciences, the 16th century posed an unprecedented threat to the papacy. Although schisms were nothing new for the Church by the late Middle Ages — many Christian sects had branched off from the Church by that point — the Protestant Reformation of 1517 placed extraordinary pressure on the Church. The Protestants argued for less reliance on the Church and a stronger individual relationship with God, sharply contrasting the Church’s teachings of the pope as the direct line to God. If anyone could really have their own connection to God, what

would that mean for the one who held “the keys of the kingdom of heaven”? What would it mean for the Church’s power if the truths on which they had built their foundation were suddenly decided — or proven — to be false?

These questions held enormous significance to the life of the Church, and the consequences of the ensuing events of the 15th and 16th centuries still reverberate to this day. Powerful forces in society — religious, political, economic, cultural — will often be threatened by new ideas, new ways of thinking, and new sources of knowledge. Today’s most controlling institutions and governments may use their strength over society to suppress those ideas: banning books, prohibiting certain words and ideas in classrooms, undermining the free press, denying the most basic of truths. Rather than adapting and accepting new knowledge, this repression and adherence to a strict orthodoxy of thought and belief becomes a means of preserving their primacy. And, just as it was done five hundred years ago, we must continue to fight — dangerous, radical, uncomfortable, scary as it may be — to tell the truth.

She recently finished her first feature film, Cart Pushers (Vincent D’Allessandro). From the Mabel Mercer Foundation, she received the Julie Wilson Award endowment ‘23. Berkeley Rep debut. Broadway: Javier Muñoz is best known for starring as Alexander Hamilton in the cultural phenomenon musical Hamilton and as Usnavi in In the Heights. Film/TV: he has appeared on Shadowhunters, Blindspot, Quantico, Full Frontal with Samatha Bee, and the features Love Reconsidered, Three Months, and Monuments. Recent theatre includes The New Englanders at Manhattan Theatre Club and A Sign of the Times. Javier is also an outspoken activist for LGBTQ+.

Brian Ray Norris

Brian is a Broadway, film, and television actor and proud member of both Actors Equity and SAG-AFTRA. Brian is best known for originating the role of Mr. Krabs on Broadway in The SpongeBob Musical and reprised his role in the Live On Stage version of the same show that aired on Nickelodeon and is now streaming on multiple platforms. Brian was featured throughout Season 11 of American Horror Story: New York City as Detective Mulcahey. Brian has performed all across North America and abroad in multiple touring companies and has had leading roles in several Off Broadway productions including Guy in A Dog Story and Miles in Sideways. Other favorite roles in NY and regionally include Luther Billis in South Pacific, Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls, Chef Louis in The Little Mermaid, Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice, Lord John Middleton in Sense and Sensibility, Beadle Bamford in Sweeney Todd, Mr. Bumble in Oliver, and many more.

Stephen Danska Guitar

Steve previously played guitar in Berkeley Rep’s premiere of Paradise Square as well as Kiss My Aztec. He is a Bay Area native making a living as a professional guitarist. His music education began at a young age studying classical piano, but he later fell in love with the guitar. He graduated from California State University East Bay in 2014 with a BA in jazz guitar performance. Versatility across music genres is one of his strongest assets, and has ultimately led to touring nationally and internationally as a side musician for different artists. Apart from playing musicals around the Bay Area, he plays guitar for the band Warscythe.

Daniel is a versatile and in-demand bassist in San Francisco. He has recently appeared at Berkeley Rep in Paradise Square and Swept Away. He has performed

internationally with Piaf! The Show, Michael Feinstein, Betty Buckley, Joan Rivers, Spencer Day, Petula Clark, and Mary Wilson of the Supremes, among others. Violin

Violinist Yuri Kye enjoys a dynamic career as an orchestral and chamber musician, recording artist, entertainer, and educator. Yuri was the violinist and fiddler in the first national tour of the multi-Tony winning A Christmas Carol on Broadway in 2021. She has toured/performed with best-selling acts including Sigur Rós, Halsey, Kygo, Michael Buble, Andrea Bocelli, Tony, Toni, Tone!, and appeared on the season finale of Paris in Love on Peacock TV in 2021. Yuri is a member of Sarasota Opera in Florida, and performs with symphonies of Oakland, Monterey, Santa Cruz, as well as the RenoPhil and San Francisco Chamber Orchestra.

Dave MacNab Guitar

Dave is thrilled to be back at Berkeley Rep after performing in last year’s premiere of Goddess. He’s performed with many of Broadway’s biggest touring shows, including world premieres of Wicked, Beautiful, and Legally Blonde. Other favorites include Book of Mormon, The Color Purple, and Hamilton, which he was blessed to perform in Puerto Rico with creator Lin Manuel Miranda. He has toured and recorded with Bob Weir, Shelby Lynne, Barry Manilow, and many others, including television and radio performances. Joshua Mikus-Mahoney Cello

Joshua originated the Cello Chair in Berkeley Rep’s World Premiere of Swept Away. He has also appeared as the Principal Cellist for Broadway by the Bay, Contra Costa Musical Theatre, CenterRep, and Lucky Penny Productions. Joshua can be heard on the debut single Even After by Charlie Mitchell,

and the Broadway by the Bay Holiday al bums Home for the Holidays (featured solo ist) and All is Bright. A classically trained cellist, Joshua often sits in with other Bay Area symphonies, opera companies, and chamber and solo performance artists. He holds a MM in Cello Performance from the University of Washington, and a BM in Cel lo Performance from Chapman University

Chris Sutherland Drums

Chris has recently relocated to New York City from Toron to. He was the drummer on the Toronto productions of Dear Evan Han sen, Kinky Boots, Bat Out Of Hell, The Body guard, and the long running Toronto pro duction of Mamma Mia! He was the drum mer for the pre-Broadway production of &Juliet, working with songwriting and producing legend Max Martin, and most recently was the sub on the Hamilton “And Peggy” National Tour. Since arriving in NYC he has been the electronic drum programmer for Hell’s Kitchen on Broadway.

Her musical The Lonely Few (with Rachel Bonds) played to sold out audiences at the Geffen Playhouse in LA and is currently running at MCC in NYC. Victoria is a lighting designer who hails from Chicago and now lives in New York City. Select designs include Women In Focus with Louisville Ballet, Cinderella and Newsies with the Paramount Theatre Aurora, La Cancion with Repertorio Español, The Christmas Tree Farm with Mile Square Theatre, and The Commons with The Hearth at 59e59. Jordan Roth

Producer

Jordan Roth is a seven-time Tony Award winning Broadway producer, multidisciplinary artist, and fashion innovator. Select Broadway producing projects include the revivals of Into the Woods, Angels in America, and Falsettos. As President of Jujamcyn Theaters, select shows include the Tony Award-winning productions of Moulin Rouge!, Hadestown, Kinky Boots, and Springsteen on Broadway. Upcoming: Gatsby at American Repertory Theater. Jordan is the Creative Director of Ambassador Theatre Group and serves on the Board of Trustees of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, The Broadway League, and the Estée Lauder Companies Charitable Foundation. Nicole Kastrinos serves as Executive Producer for Jordan Roth Productions.

Key to the City Productions

Producer

Key to the City Productions is a multimedia production company founded by Amanda Lipitz and Henry Tisch. Current projects include The Picture of Dorian Gray on the West End starring Sarah Snook, the Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along, and a number of films in development. Amanda is a director, writer, and producer. She directed and produced the documentaries STEP and FOUND. Amanda’s theatre producing credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Legally Blonde, The Performers, A View from the Bridge, The Humans, and Brooklynite. Amanda also created and executive produced the MTV series Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods. Henry is a co-producer of the Museum of Broadway and was formerly a Creative Development professional at the Disney Theatrical Group.

Peggy and Yogen Dalal

Yogen and Peggy are the lead supporters of Berkeley Rep’s Musical Theatre Development Fund. They are both members

of Impact Partners, an organization that funds independent documentaries on pressing social issues. Yogen is on the board of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. His past board services include the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, TheatreWorks, and KQED. Peggy is on the board of the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco. She also previously served on the board of TheatreWorks, and chaired the board of Avenidas, a non-profit that helps Bay Area mid-Peninsula seniors live well, learn, and maintain their independence. She is associated with a number of community organizations in Palo Alto.

Johanna Pfaelzer

Artistic Director

Johanna joined Berkeley Rep in 2019 as its fourth artistic director, following 12 years as artistic director of New York Stage and Film (NYSAF), a New York City-based developer of new works for theatre, film, and television. Johanna is proud to have developed work by notable established and early career writers like Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda; Goddess by Saheem Ali, Michael Thurber, and Jocelyn Bioh; The Humans by Stephen Karam; Hadestown by Anaïs Mitchell; The Wolves by Sarah DeLappe; The Invisible Hand by Ayad Akhtar; A 24-Decade History of Popular Music by Taylor Mac; The Homecoming Queen by Ngozi Anyanwu; The Great Leap by Lauren Yee; Doubt by John Patrick Shanley; The Fortress of Solitude by Michael Friedman and Itamar Moses; The Jacksonian by Beth Henley; and Green Day’s American Idiot. Johanna previously served as associate artistic director of American Conservatory Theater and is a graduate of Wesleyan University and the Actors Theatre of Louisville Apprentice Program. She lives in Berkeley with her husband, Russell Champa, and their son, Jasper.

Tom Parrish

Managing Director

Tom has served as a theatre leader and arts administrator for over 20 years, with experience in organizations ranging from multi-venue performing arts centers to major Tony Award-winning theatre companies. Prior to Berkeley Rep, he served as executive director of Trinity Repertory Company, Geva Theatre Center, and Merrimack Repertory Theatre and as associate managing director/general manager of San Diego Repertory Theatre. His work has been recognized with a NAACP Theatre Award for Best Producer and “Forty

Under 40” recognition in Providence, Rochester, the Merrimack Valley, and San Diego. He received his MBA/MA in Arts Administration from Southern Methodist University; BA in Theater Arts and Economics from Case Western Reserve University; attended the Commercial Theater Institute, National Theater Institute, and Harvard Business School’s Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management; and is certified in Leading Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by Northwestern University. He and his husband live in Berkeley.

MAKING THEATRE

Creating a set as intricate and historically-based as Galileo 's is no mean feat.

Rachel Hauck's stage floor uses an image of the work of 16th-century engineer Georg Hartmann. Born in Bavaria and educated in Cologne, Hartmann was a literal Renaissance man, numbering among his additional professions astronomer and priest. The design of Galileo 's stage floor is based on one of his four brass astrolabes still in existence. It uses a typeface based on Hartmann's engraving that was custom-made for the production.

The Galileo scrim features a geocentric map of the spheres of the heavens created by Portuguese cartographer Bartolomeu Velho in 1561. In order to translate it to curtain form at stage size, our scenic artists painstakingly mapped out the geometry of the piece by hand.

The team of scenic artists worked closely together to ensure that the piece appear as if it was crafted by a single hand.

One of the most celebrated living writers of the Mexican-American experience, Octavio Solis pens a 21st-century tale inspired by John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. William Joad has no heir to bequeath the family farm to — until he learns about Martín Jodes, a young Mexican-American migrant worker descended from Steinbeck’s protagonist Tom Joad. In a reversal of the Joads’ mythic journey, William and Martín embark on a road trip from California’s migrant farm camps back to Oklahoma, where they reckon with their brutal pasts and forge an unlikely bond. Along their journey on the Mother Road, they gather a chorus of travelers. Witness Solis’ soaring poetry, gritty realism, and mythic scope as he captures the intersection of people, cultures, and migration in the American West. JUN 14–JUL 21, 2024 |
