U14B Berkhamstedian Report In a season maligned by poor weather (4 games being postponed) and a rather too generous attitude to their opponents, the U14Bs record of played 7, lost 6, drawn 1, compares even less favourable than Hinckly United at the foot of the Blue Square Bet Conference Table North, who have lost 29 from their 34 games but have, at least, recorded a win! Despite this, there is much to praise. In Joe Roberts, the team has a technically gifted striker, whose 2 finishes against Dr Challoner’s School were worthy of the great Lionel Messi himself. Over time the mercurial Joe can only get better as his temperament matures. In midfield, Oscar Welton proved to be a combative and creative player. In defence, Edward Vaughan was outstanding, with accomplished displays at centre back before moving to his more accustomed right back position. So the team has, what is described in the ‘business’, as a good ‘spine’. To this can be added Tom Hitchcock’s ‘whipped in’ deliveries from the right hand side along with Alex Dodd’s remarkable goal keeping ability to stop the most difficult of shots from finding the net. It should be noted also how the team squandered potential winning positions in the last 10-15 minutes in 4 of their games. Frankly this gentlemanly generosity, befitting any well educated public school boy, will need to be addressed also: the world has moved on and I hope a more ‘hardened’ and ‘street wise’ approach is nourished in future years.
