Hair Loss

Hair Loss- Types Androgenetic Alopecia: Male-pattern hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia and male pattern baldness (MPB), is hair loss that occurs due to an underlying susceptibility of hair follicles to androgenic miniaturization. It is the most common cause of hair loss and will affect up to 70% of men and 40% of women at some point in their lifetimes Alopecia Areata: Also known as spot baldness, is an autoimmune disease in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp due to the body's failure to recognize its own body cells and destroys its own tissue as if it were an invader. In 1– 2% of cases, the condition can spread to the entire scalp (alopecia totalis) or to the entire epidermis (alopecia universalis). Alopecia Totalis (AT)-Total loss of the hair on the scalp. Alopecia totalis is the loss of all head hair. Its causes are unclear, but believed to be autoimmune. Stress is thought to be a contributor. However, many with the disorder lead relatively low stress lives. Alopecia Mucinosa: (also known as "Follicular mucinosis," "Mucinosis follicularis,", "Pinkus’ follicular mucinosis," and "Pinkus’ follicular mucinosis–benign primary form") is a skin disorder that generally presents, but not exclusively, as erythematous plaques or flat patches without hair primarily on the scalp and face. This can also present on the body as a follicular mucinosis and may represent a systemic disease.

Hair Loss- Types Traction Alopecia-- Traction alopecia is usually due to excessive pulling or tension on hair shafts as a result of certain hair styles. It is seen more often in women, particularly those of East Indian and Afro-Caribbean origin. Hair loss depends on the way the hair is being pulled. Prolonged traction alopecia can stop new hair follicles developing and lead to permanent hair loss. It is very common. In india it is common in Sikhs. Anagen Effluvium--This hair loss is generally caused by chemicals such as those used to treat cancer. It is the pathologic loss of anagen or growth-phase hairs. Classically, it is caused by radiation therapy to the head and systemic chemotherapy, especially with alkylating agents Scarring Alopecia: Cicatricial alopecia, also known as scarring alopecia, is a diverse group of rare disorders that destroy the hair follicle, replace it with scar tissue, and cause permanent hair loss. A variety of distributions are possible. In some cases, hair loss is gradual, without symptoms, and is unnoticed for long periods. Telogen Effluvium: is a scalp disorder characterized by the thinning or shedding of hair resulting from the early entry of hair in the telogen phase (the resting phase of the hair follicle)

Male Pattern Baldness

Testosterone is converted to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by 5 Alpha Reductase (5AR) Enzyme.

DHT attaches to the androgen receptors on the hair follicle.

DHT causes increased hair loss; gradually miniaturizing the hair follicle.

This miniaturized hair follicle eventually dies and hair loss occurs.

Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern hair loss is an inherited condition, caused by a genetically determined sensitivity to the effects of dihydrotestosterone, or DHT in some areas of the scalp. DHT is believed to shorten the growth, or anagen, phase of the hair cycle, from a usual duration of 36 years to just weeks or months. This causes miniaturization of the follicles, and producing progressively fewer and finer anagen hairs. The production of DHT is regulated by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Several genes are involved, accounting for differing age of onset, progression, pattern and severity of hair loss in family members. The susceptibility genes are inherited from both mother and father. At this time, genetic testing for prediction of balding is unreliable.

Female Pattern Baldness

The reason for female pattern baldness is not well understood, but it may be related to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 5.

Aging Hormonal changes (Menopause changes) Family history of male or female pattern baldness Breaking of hair (from treatments and twisting or pulling of hair) Certain skin diseases that lead to scarring of the hair follicles Other related reasons: •. Certain autoimmune diseases-e.g. Lupus •. Hormone problems, such as too much testosterone, or too much or too little thyroid hormone •. Too little iron •. Too little vitamin B (biotin) or other vitamin deficiency •. Medications such as chemotherapy and beta blockers •. Patchy hair loss •. Syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection •. Temporary shedding of hair after a major illness, surgery, or pregnancy
