s I reflect on a very busy year and look ahead into a new school year, I feel extremely fortunate each day to observe children developing natural human tendencies like the drive for exploration, the need for community and connection, and the quest for self-perfection. I am proud to be part of MSB and the work we do to carefully prepare environments that support children in these efforts. Back in 2015, I watched a vision for MSB’s future take shape through our Go Beyond Capital Campaign and building expansion project. Over the last two years, I experienced our community coming together and joining the fundraising effort. This past year, thanks to your generosity, we realized our dream as we completed the expansion. Our faculty is also reaching into new opportunities and enjoying the additional benefits achieved through this campaign. These days I get to watch children playing in the new multi-purpose room. When I walk by the visual arts studio, I see children expanding their learning through creative projects. I hear streams of music flowing from the performing arts studio. I pass by the library and observe children focusing quietly or meeting in small groups. I notice adolescent students moving through their new space as if it had been there for 10 years. With our added elementary classroom, I have witnessed the program grow from 37 students at the end of 2017, to 55 at the start of the 2018-2019 school year. Personally, I’ve seen my family grow through the MSB experience. Willow – our inspiration for founding MSB – is enjoying her sophomore year at The Darrow School. Winter has moved into the elementary program, joining Wren who is now in her 5th year. I am grateful for all of those who have been a part of MSB’s evolution and for your efforts over the past year. I am eager to see what the future holds for us. Warmly,
Todd Covert

BOARD E
very year in late Spring, all across our country, as the days get longer and the school year comes to a close, we acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of our older students with a rite of passage—graduation. For me, the MSB graduating class of 2018 was particularly noteworthy for two reasons. Firstly, five of the six graduates had been at our school since our doors first opened back in 2006. Secondly, one of those students was my son, Diego. As I watch Diego move on from a place that he has called home for most of his life, I am reaffirmed that the choice our family made to attend MSB for all these years was the best choice we could have made for our children. I witness Diego walk with confidence and purpose, and I see his ability to recognize his limits and ask for support. He knows how to think critically and creatively and is able speak up when something doesn’t feel right. He is infused with an eagerness to learn more and to engage with others—not just his peers, but with all ages and backgrounds. Diego knows how to listen and to collaborate with others and he carries an emotional intelligence that I consider a model for myself. He understands himself and values his place in the world. Diego is equipped to take on whatever is put before him, not just in school, but also in life. These attributes were identified and fostered for twelve years at MSB through a comprehensive pedagogy, an outstanding staff, and an inclusive community. This evolving space and the community that supports it is what has enabled my children to not just survive, but to thrive. It has become abundantly clear to me that it is our right, responsibility, and privilege to provide our youth with the tools they need to be conscious, creative, self-motivated and communityfocused citizens, ready to contribute to a greater society. One of the most powerful ways of fulfilling this legacy is through our support of MSB. I am deeply grateful to all of you for choosing to be a part of this community and supporting the work we do here. Whatever your roll—staff, board member, new or returning parent, relative, alumni family, or community friend—you play an integral role in creating a future that we believe in. It is my honor to be creating this with you. With Gratitude,
Jen Salinetti Chair, Board of Trustees

MSB PARENT COMMUNITY The MSB Parent Community aims to foster camaraderie amongst the parents, offer guidance to new and transitioning parents, and provide support for the staff and school, through education and enrichment events, social gatherings, work parties, volunteer coordination, and classroom ambassadors. All parents, grandparents, and caregivers are inherently part of the Parent Community and encouraged to participate. Throughout the school year, we offer individuals and families the opportunity to contribute to the MSB community and help to foster a culture of generosity and gratitude. We invite everyone to participate in a way that reflects individual talents and fits with individual schedules—chairing a committee, helping to plan an event, preparing lesson materials at home, participating in Staff Appreciation Week, driving students on a class outing, or scooping ice cream on the last day of school. To find out more about what we do or how you can be more involved, visit our page on the MSB website, email parentgroup@berkshiremontessori.org, or attend an event!

GO BEYOND CAPITOL CAMPAIGN

T
he Montessori School of the Berkshires (MSB) opened in 2006 with 24 Children’s House students. In our second year we added an Elementary class. In 2009 we broke-ground on a new building and a year later, when we moved into our new school, we had expanded to include the Toddler and Adolescent programs. By 2015 we had more than quadrupled our opening enrollment and were nearing student capacity—we were ready to expand again. In 2016 we rolled out our Go Beyond campaign and embarked on an ambitious expansion plan that included a whole school meeting space, an indoor movement area, an expanded adolescent space, an added elementary classroom, programming space for visual and performing arts, and an enhanced outdoor space. Today, thanks to our munificent and inspirational community we have realized the vision of an expanded facility designed to support the 21st century needs of our growing student body. We have a well-appointed Multi-Purpose Room that provides a permanent gathering space and allows for a variety of indoor activities and sports. The new adjoining Music Room opens up onto the Multi-Purpose Room, and the combined space allows for in-school theater productions, concerts, art exhibits, parent education offerings and other assemblies. The new and expanded Adolescent Experience (AE) classroom allows all aspects of the AE program to flourish with a quiet room, an attached kitchen, and a dedicated science lab. The additional Elementary classroom has allowed us to accomodate more students and provides space for both large scale projects and small groups of students. We have also created a dedicated and expanded Library as well as a Visual Arts Studio, and the new position of Integrated Curriculum Coordinator to oversee these two rooms and support integrated art activities for all classrooms.

B
ecause Dr. Montessori believed that children recognize their place in the world through nature, the learning environment has also expanded outside the walls of MSB with purposefully designed landscaping and simple structures. Every classroom now has an outside component enclosed with ergonomically sized planters and shade-giving pergolas. Towards the back of the property is an open grass playfield for group sports and soon there will be a greenhouse and vegetable garden. Following is a list of all those who generously participated in our Go Beyond capitol campaign. On behalf of all the students, guides, and staff who will benefit from this expansion,

kshires Graduating Class of 2018 “The first time I met Julie I was so shy and nervous that I couldn’t even introduce myself to everyone. But now I am not afraid to ask for help or introduce myself to a group. Montessori has taught me many things over the years from how to read to algebra and everything in between. All of the lessons that I learned in Montessori prepared me for this day. Whether it was learning cursive with Meagan, or time management with Julie and Lori, it all got me ready for today. Aidan, Tyler, Diego, Mihi, and Theo–all five of these boys stood with me through the ups and the downs for the past eleven years. Eleven years! Our band of brothers are connected, and I hope that we will stay connected over the years of high school.”

“I came to MSB when I was three years old, and I have literally learned everything I know here. I am so grateful to all of the teachers I have had for teaching and inspiring me…thank you all for teaching me so much. I would also like to thank Todd and Meagan for creating this amazing place, Avie for dealing with me, and my parents for allowing me to go to this wonderful school. I am so glad I went to this school, because it has brought me so many friends, and so much joy, and I’m so thankful that it has prepared me so well for high school.” Theo Maurino

“I don’t know if this is the intent of the pink tower, but for me it is a model of education itself with the building blocks at the bottom and as it goes up it gets more refined over and over again. I am so glad to have a very powerful and strong base holding me up. The new expansions and new spaces have brought something to my attention—the fact that you guys have been doing such a good job for 12 years and that you’re still trying to make things better and always improve. I find that amazing. I thank you for [not only] making me a good student but also making me a good person. I owe you everything. Every action that I have taken, every moment that I have shared with you all, I will cherish forever. Thank you for being my family for 12 amazing years.” Tyler Nadig
DIEGO SALINETTI Monument Mountain High School, Great Barrington, MA
“I didn’t think that I did a lot of work in Children’s House; I used to pound nails into this stump that Joey had in his classroom. Looking back now, I realize how much that class helped me gain independence and confidence in myself. The adults in the room are there more as guides than as teachers. They are there to help you with anything that is not making sense to you or to help you talk with one of your classmates about an issue. I learned to ask for help when I needed it. I will forever be thankful for the time I have gotten to spend here, the support I have received, and the wonderful friends I have gotten to make through my 11 years here at MSB. I am going to miss each and every one of you and I would like to thank you all again for helping to make me the person that I am today.” Diego Salinetti

“I first came to Montessori two and a half years ago. I was looking for someplace where I could feel comfortable and happy learning. From my first day I knew I didn’t want to leave. I had found an academic and social home where I could thrive and be myself; a place where I would not only learn math, science, history and important things like that, but also learn how to be a real member of a community. I would like to thank Meagan and Todd for working nonstop to make sure every day that everyone is getting the best education possible. I would like to thank Dana for being such an incredible theater teacher and for exposing me to how Montessori lives and breathes as singular group, not divided by grades and ages. I would like to thank Julie and Lori for being the most incredible, kind, caring, and genuinely amazing teachers I have ever had. They have made it possible for me to grow as a student and person in ways I never thought I could.”

“Montessori has taught me so much. I really love the program because it let me learn at my own pace, and with that I was much more involved with what I was learning. MSB has taught me so many important life skills, such as time management, and how to figure out the way I learn. When I first got here I was way too shy to ask for help when I couldn’t figure something out myself, but now asking for help is no problem. That is going to be very helpful in the future. Thank you, Avie, for putting up with me in afterschool and just being amazing. Honestly, I think I’ll miss you the most. I would also love to give a special thanks to Todd and Meagan for starting this school, and my parents for sending me here. I was very lucky finding this school because it has been the best school for me that I could imagine. Thank you all so much for everything.”
