Since the baby boom of 1990, a few areas in Berlin,

Prenzlauer Berg for example, has been populated heavily by young families. In addition to being the ideal neighbourhood for artists and students, this particular Kiez is great for kids. From the trendy children’s shops to the museums, you can’t run out of activities here!

Kids, Prenzlauer Berg is a must visit!

MACHmit! Museum for children

Featuring large play areas and a variety of children ‘ s books, this museum was opened to the public in 2003. It is an odd but exceptionally entertaining and conventional location for both the children and their parents. Before Covid hit, the kids were able to enjoy a 7 metre high climbing frame with safety net, the Eliaskirche ‘ s original church organ and so much more.

In addition to a really cool, safe and engaging play area, Prenzlauer Berg also offers enchanting green parks great for family time and even par -

Hardly anyone expects to see a field of green in a city center, but Prenzlauer Berg offers these decent sized pockets of joy to breathe in a bit of fresh air. It is a pity that in some of these parks, pets are not allowed.

What is the sole meaning of being a Prenzlauer Berg-ian? The answer is mindfullness. How can you reach it cheaper? Urban yoga in kiez Karlin, located in the hinterlands of Prague.

This detour is not for the ordinary. You must firstly become one with the trash and the homeless in order to reach your thousand euro flat just across the street.

For starters, the Bitilasana next to the metro will do. A cow is easily mistaken with a local resident. Blendage is a key to survival.

Sadly, there are no bagel or graffiti poses, but you might as well just park yourself in front of a painted wall with some bagels.

Performing the Mrtsana in the old Karlin barracks is highly advanced as you will become one with the corpses of young drunk souls, lying on the concrete ground after a long rough night.

From 1976-1979 late music legend David Bowie lived, worked, and thrived in Berlin. He gave the world Low, Heroes, & Lodger, three albums that act as odes and closures to his turbulent life in the then still separated city. He moved to get away from the vapid drug scene in LA, and was barely known in Berlin in the early years, so he enjoyed clubbing in SO36 and roaming around museums and shops in the punk district.

Iggy Pop moved to Berlin on Bowie’s request, the pair lived, worked and partied together (again, SO36). They enjoyed life in the city very much, and Berlin remembers the former Stooges band member fondly.

Mitte Street-Style

Are you a person who loves fashion? Do you have a particular style and do you follow fashion trends? Or you don’t know what to wear at all and you just wear whatever you pick from your closet? Or maybe you love making weird combinations with your clothes every day?

What’s

Are you the type of person who loves fashion and combining your clothes in different ways? I also love to experiment, but in the end, my personal style can be categorized as quite classic. Mitte is the epicenter of Berlin where everyone goes to see and be seen. Undoubtedly Berlin is the fashion city of the whole Germany. The city is known for its culture and underground clubs and parties. Mitte especially is full of shopping stores ranging from global corporate chains to many independent vintage boutiques and second-hand stores. Many people dress to impress but no one will ever judge the way you have dressed. If you just walk around in Mitte, you can notice many different people with many different styles. Some of them are following the fashion trends and others prefer casual relaxed looks.

Dress however YOU want!

No one will judge the way you dress.

You can notice that here most of the people wear backpacks when they go out of their houses. That’s why Berlin can be described as a backpack city. You can also see that black is the primary color of people’s outfits. It is not seen as a funeral color and you can freely wear it every single day and it will not be strange. Moreover, people here are big fans of sneakers. The fancier the sneakers are, the better it is. If you love sneakers you will be able to find many different stores offering special ones. People are not enslaved by brands. They do not like to show off so much, but rather to wear clothes that are rarer and unique. You are able to walk around as you want and no one will say anything which is quite impressive and because of that, there is no pressure in Berlin on the way you dressed up.

Why is Schoneberg

chon

In this magazine, the personality of the district is highlighted. Vibrant colors with strong contrast. A calm district and yet so expressive. Living a quiet life while being so loud in expressing itself.

SA perfect balance some might say?

When you are being creative, you have no awareness of your surroundings, except for the one you are in.

..

Schoneberg is a canvas for its habitants. A place which does not lack space, a place that is embraced by people.

..

If Schoneberg was a character, it would be a deer. Shy and reserved animal, creative and peaceful

..

at the same time. Schoneberg is also the biggest gay district in Berlin. People want to be heard in this area, and one of their tools for that is street art.

..

When walking in Schoneberg, you can feel peace and see expression. That is what Schoneberg is

.. all about.

..

In Schoneberg, peace and quiet is easy to find. It is a colorful district thanks to its street art and openminded people. The area is big and spaced out, which is a quality for claustrophobic people!

Racist art? No thanx. It seems that people living here... care. There is a sort of respectful energy in the area which I believe is one of the reasons

.. for Schoneberg’s peacfulness.

Schoneberg might be the scale for you.

The nearer a man comes to a calm mind, the closer he is to strenght. - Marcus Aurelius

A Day in the Life of Mandy Fields

A Day in the Life of

James Marmen

Hi fabulous people! My name is Mandy, I am 24 years old and I have been living in Berlin for the past two years now. I live in a renovated loft near Boxhagener Platz and I am a full-time Instagram influencer.

A day in my life differs from day to day. I usually wake up around 7 AM and start off my day with some yoga followed

by a protein bar and açaí bowl. After that from around 8 to 10 I like to check my instagram comments, my dm’s, any business e-mails that I may have received while asleep, and I reply to those. And from 10 to 11 is me-time! I usually read a self-help or vegan lifestyle book while having a healthy snack, like some carrots and hummus or a smoothie. At 11 AM I take a jog around the neighborhood with my friend. We do this until 12 AM. From then on, it’s serious work time. On this particular day I have to post some content about this hair vitamin that I am being paid to promote.

24

I get ready, do my hair and make-up and start taking pictures of myself with the hair vitamins bottle. After this, I am truly exhausted and in need for a coffee so I put on my cute Prada shoes and walk to my favorite coffee shop for a matcha latte with soy milk, my regular. After that I walk around some more and take some photos and

videos for my Instagram story. That was it for my work day. Now, it’s time to order some food at this fabulous vegan Indian restaurant that just opened and catch up on some New Girl. My favorite! Before I know it it’s 10 PM which means bed time! I take off all my make-up, do my 10-step Korean skincare routine and hop into bed. And that was a day in my life! Please don’t forget to follow me on Instagram: @mandysworld_“From 10 to 11 is me-time!”

vs

vs

Hello everyone. My name’s James, I am 46 years old and I live in Berlin, Germany. I came to Germany in the 1980’s. I am currently living in a tent, right past the Oberbaumbrücke. To describe a day in my life is not easy. Every day is different, it’s never really the same. Especially in a city like Berlin. But I’ll try to break down what I do on an average day.

Usually I wake up late, around midday, and drink what’s left of the beer. They let me take a shower at Weißes Kreuz, opposite of the Ostbahnhof. They also have a closet there with fresh underwear and army shirts – the shirts are really good. I spend most of the day just hanging around on the streets, we usually have a cigarette and talk about how much Berlin has changed.

Most of us are in this situation not by choice. Anyone can end up on the street, I myself am

an old punk who just got out of jail for setting a police station on fire. I did this because I felt like I had beentreated unfairly. Others ended up here because of unemployment, loss of their houses, their wives leaving them and taking their children with them. It can be anything really.

Some think politically, see their way of life as a memorial against fascism and capitalism, others don’t care.

The most exhausting thing about living on the street is that you can never sleep well. Everywhere you will always be driven away at some point. Tomorrow everything is cleared here. The public order office comes by at 8 P.M. with the police and a container to dispose of our things.

This is how most days go. We move from place to place, sleep wherever we can and eat and drink what is available. It’s not easy, but it’s the reality.

It's not easy, but it's the reality.

A Day Planned Out in

Prenzlauer Berg

Tips for your favorite local expert, millionaire, popular, fashionable and expert travel guide.

4.

Picnic at Mauerpark

Set up a cute little picnic at this gorgeous park and spend some quality time with some friends, take cute insta worthy photos and drink some sparkly wine. Enjoy the sun if you’re lucky, and connect with nature.

2.

Let’s pretend we’re in a rom-com

1.

Time to wake up!

You’re probably hungover and over-slept from all that partying with your new neighbors last night, time to hit the streets and grab your favorite overpriced yet delicious coffee and a croissant from Zeit für Brot in Weinbergsweg.

5.

Let’s go shopping!

You might be a bit tired from wandering around this beautiful neighborhood, now it’s time for some retail therapy at Kastanienallee’s trendy shops. You might even find a cute outfit for a date night plan.

After that yummy breakfast, we have a cheaper activity to do next. Head over to Antiquariat die Geisterschmiede and get lost in a book labyrinth. You will look super interesting and mysterious reading those books, you will definely feel like the main character.

26

3.

Hit the Farmer’s Market

Okay, you’ve done your reading for the day. Now, let’s go buy some delicious seasonal fruits and veggies at Kollwitzplatz, get yourself some fresh flowers and some snacks to take to the park as well.

6.

End the night with wine

Since there is no possibility to enjoy the bars and nightlife in Berlin for now, head to Vinoteque Schmidt and treat yourself with a nice bottle of wine to take home. Watch your favorite movie, put on a skincare mask and order a pizza. Rest, for tomorrow is a whole new day in beautiful Prenzlauer Berg.

Steglitz, a beautiful place by the lake that has a lot of family friendly picnic spots.

From there I followed the road next to the lake and little did I know how long it actually is.

Finally I reached the end of the road, so I hopped of my bike an sat by the water to enjoy the view. 10 minutes later, I turn to the right to reach over to my bag and there I see a big sign that says “You have reached the

One of the best pastimes in winter is drinking Glühwein with friends or family. This is usually made from red wine, which is heated up and spiced with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, orange and sugar. Sometimes it is also served “mit Schuss”, which means with a shot of rum or another liquor.

Where to

KREUZBERG101

find THE best

cocktail K inKreuzberg?

Kreuzberg is a district of Berlin, Germany. It is part of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough located south of Mitte.During the Cold War era, it was one of the poorest areas of West Berlin, but since German reunification in 1990 it has become more gentrified and known for its arts scene.

Schwarze Traube

Schwarze Traube is a speakeasy-style cocktail wunderkind in Kreuzberg run by Atalay Aktas, who’s something of a Berlin legend after his magnificent cocktails won him Germany’s Mixologist of the Year Award in 2013. Black wallpaper with gold details and trimmings make up the interior of the bar where guests can sip perfectly blended concoctions from antique glassware. There is no set menu and instead, visitors tell the bartender what they’re in the mood for to receive their own tailor-made drink.

Schwarze Traube, Wrangelstraße 24, Berlin, Germany, +49 30 23135569

Wuergeengel

Würgeengel gets its name from Luis Buñuel’s absurdist masterpiece film The Exterminating Angel, in which a group of bourgeois dinner guests find themselves unable to leave a fancy dinner party. This other-worldly opulence certainly translates into the bar’s every detail as its well-dressed staff serves guests reasonably priced cocktails in candle-lit leather booths. The bar’s menu features classic cocktails and a decent wine list with a small selection of food available from the Gorgonzola Club next door.

Würgeengel, Dresdener Str. 122, Berlin, Germany, +49 30 6155560

Limonadier

Limonadier embodies its simple slogan ‘we love good drinks’ in a rather lavish way. Its stylishly designed interior and dapper, knowledgeable staff makes this spot an impressive cocktail joint with a lengthy menu and its own homemade tonics. With warm lighting and a relaxed atmosphere, this bar is a favourite among Kreuzberg locals.

Spandau

Craft Beer

Havelbräu has been developed since 1994 when the term craft beer was not even invented.

Florida-Eis

has been available in countless delicious varieties since the spring of 1927.

Zitadelle

is a fortress, one of the best-preserved Renaissance military structures of Europe. Built from 1559–94 atop a medieval fort on an island near the meeting of the Havel and the Spree, it was designed to protect the town of Spandau.

Biking-Tour to Denmark

In Spandau is a part of the international Berlin-Copenhagen cycle route runs through Spandau. On the banks of the Havel, the popular bathing area “Bürgerablage” takes you through deep green forest over the small Henningsdorf, which today almost belongs to the “Berliner Speckgürtel”. It continues through places like Velten and Oranienburg into Mecklenburg-Vorpommern up to Warnemünde, from where one then crosses over to Denmark.

Culture

there were numerous music events, art markets, exhibitions and workshops. You can find out more from “Neue Urbane Welten” and “Neustadtoasen”. In the “Kladower Hof” there is a great jazz jam session every first Friday of the month (try the homemade meatballs), the “Gärtnerei Guyot” regularly offers events such as comedy evenings and its legendary parties among connoisseurs .

KEVIN LEE

Boat-Rowing

If you want, you can also rent a rowboat or pedal boat here at “Bootshaus Kladow” and go to the two small islands in the middle of the “Glieni”. Anglers also get their money’s worth here, because the lake is one of the richest in fish and species in all of Berlin.

Weihnachtsmarkt

romantic Christmas market right in the lively old town of Spandau. Here you can find Glühwein, Grünkohl, Cracking sausages and come to the numerous stands where you are guaranteed to find a suitable last minute Christmas present.

NEUKÖLLN AS A MUSIC INFLUENCE

Berlin has always been well known for being an artistic residency.

David Bowie and Iggy Pop moved there in the late ʼ70s, after deciding to escape from LA in search of a healthier and more stable life. What they didnʼt realize was that they were entering the heroin capital of Europe.

These territories created an area mainly populated by workers from Turkey, “Gastarbeiters” that were brought to Germany to help rebuild the country.

This eventually made them feel self-isolated since they were living in a city that was only using them for labor.

During this time period, Berlin had an air of danger and intrigue as it was scarred by a war and a wall that split the country in half.

Bowie was highly influenced by Berlin, where he wrote “The Berlin Trilogy”, which consists of three consecutively released studio albums: Low, Heroes & Lodger. In his album “Heroes” we see the song called Neuköln, the neighborhood from south Berlin, which was located between the American Military base at Tempelhof and the Berlin wall in Treptow.

Although Bowie didnʼt live there, he traveled there repeatedly. This cultural situation impacted and inspired Bowie.

In this song, we hear Bowieʼs saxophone performance, which sounds like a foghorn echoing through the cold streets of Neukölln during a foggy, early winter morning. It has also been said that it resembles or imitates a muezzin call.

Bowie clearly saw Neukölln from a melancholic perspective and as a

side district is now buzzing with new energy such as quirky hangouts, after-hours parties and keeps attracting fresh creatives minds.

Nowadays we still see a big Turkish influence in Neukölln. There are plenty of events like the Turkish market in Maybachufer which is open on Tuesdays and Fridays. There is definitely a big culinary exchange which makes the experience great.

A SMALL GUIDE TO REINICKENDORF

Dear reader, welcome to Reinickendorf! Are you planning to move here? Or are you just visiting this amazingly mysterious Kiez? Whatever your purpose is, this guide will help you discover the most important aspects of your choice!

Did you enjoy your refreshing walk? Nice, you might have probably realized there’s nothing else left to do. Don’t panic. Find a bench, sit down, close your eyes and find yourself.

Reinickendorf is known to be the best place in town to find your inner peace. The lack of distractions surely helps this process.

While finding youself, never start walking in a random direction. Sooner than you realize, you might end up in one of the many unexplored corners of Reinickendorf and get lost forever.

First, you might want to take a nice walk around Schäfersee, this will make you feel like a brand new person! Water, nature, green, trees: the perfect mix into a relaxing perfect day!

Ignore the screaming kids and don’t get too close to the swans. They will come around you pretending they want cuddles. They don’t.

At some point you will have to stop the conversation you’re having because of a sudden loud noise. Don’t worry, it’s just a massive plane flying two meters above your head. No panic: it can’t touch you! Another big trouble is the famous angry fox. This is probably the most frightening

mystery of Reinickendorf. You will need to pay attention while walking close to bushes at night. Nobody sees it, but everyone can hear it. The angry fox enjoys scaring people for no reason. It’s aggressive, cruel, and always looking for a fight. Keep your eyes open!

If you miss standing in a never-ending line to get into Berghain, you can queue in the endless line to enter Hellweg.

Surely what ever yone misses the most is having your dreams crushed by Berghain’s bouncer Sven Marquardt. Going to his private address one is assured to get rejected in the same manner as when tr ying to enter the club.

Reaching a sugar high from eating a whole bag of marshmellows is almost as intense as consuming drugs in Berghain.

Not having a rave on Sundays you can fill the day with going to church and praise God instead of techno.

If you crave the pounding bass of the famous speakers of the club, you can visit the pillaring of one of Berlin’s many construction sites.

The world famous club – Berghain – is closed due to the pandemic. This has left a existential void for the masses of techno worshippers. The following is a guide on how to fill this void.

PIDGY

Journal of Prenzlauer Berg pigeons

HATCHING OUT

Residential area caused Basic Pigeon a sense of alienation. That’s why he founded a journal that focuses on diversity.

Words and illustration Aino Aittasalo

BASIC PIGEON, 34

Marketing director, founder of PIDGY

“Some years ago, I inherited a tworoom flat from my parents. It’s on the first floor of an apartment building in Prenzlauer Berg.

Downstairs there’s a kindergarten, and from my kitchen window, I can see children playing and fooling around all day until their parents come and pick them up.

They say PB is the neighborhood for families in Berlin. I even once heard a nickname for the district ‘Pregnant Hill’. I think that’s pretty accurate.

I do enjoy living in PB, it offers pretty much everything for everyone. It has a fun-loving vibe, pigeons are very down-to-earth, and I like being surrounded by nice pigeons.

However, for a long time, I couldn’t help but feel a strong sense of alienation when most of the pigeons I passed by on my Sunday walks were the same age as me, with small children or at least a partner.

I even felt a bit unmanly and embarrassed in a neighborhood where everyone else seemed to stroll around with a stroller. I began to wonder why haven’t I achieved things in my life that seem to happen to most pigeons around reasonably easy?

Even the last pigeons in my inner circle began to mate and have children. I, on the other hand, had some busy years working in a marketing agency. I sought others’ approval by overperforming in everything, and that’s when the loneliness began to haunt me. I also began to develop a drinking problem. Often I found myself standing in front of the kitchen window. It was disruptively quiet in that bachelor’s box.

Was I too focused on the neighborhood stereotypes that I couldn’t see the diversity of pigeons there? Was it, after all, my own identity crisis? Was my only chance to move to a district considered more suitable for singles?

I decided running away wasn’t an option. I set up a peer support group and quickly found out I wasn’t alone with my thoughts. It changed my life. I began to see my future as optimistic. I have received a massive amount of contacts from pigeons struggling with similar feelings, and it has been empowering. Together we’ve pondered our own role in society and what kind of dreams we have for life.

A few months back, we got an idea to set up a monthly journal alongside our peer support activity that shares relatable stories of different pigeons living in Prenzlauer Berg. It aims to abandon stereotypes and generalizations and focus on reforming diversity in our beloved neighborhood. That’s the lifeblood of the PIDGY Journal.

After years of pondering and anxiety, I no longer think being single or without children in PB would be a problem. Life feels good right now like this here.

It was vital for me to find something that makes life interesting instead of focusing on what was missing. I found my purpose through PIDGY and peer support work”.

Moabit has worked up a bit of a reputation as one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods in Berlin — but are these rumors reality?

The huge jail in the middle of the neighborhood might suggest so. The Kleiner Tiergarten park is a

meeting point for drug dealers. But things are starting to change and get a fresh face around this neighborhood. The new generation is determined to walk a different path. A young community of creatives, singers and social justice fighters is taking over the scene.

Take a peek into Moabit

This is the Z/KU in the heart of Moabit. It’s a center for art and urbanism. This is where the up and coming feeling of the neighbourhood can be found... Young people, families of all kinds of backgrounds come together here. Whether you want to make a new

with your mates — this is the place for you.

Z/KU hosts many concerts and creative events as well, which will help you to blend right in with the cool kids of the neighbourhood.

Why 21?

My mates told me that back in the days when Berlin was still split in East and West side, Moabit had the post code 21... Now that may have changed, but it left behind a certain mindset in the residents of this neighbourhood. 21 isn’t just an old post code... It stands for belonging to this area, staying true to it and expressing the energy it gives you to create yourself.

Friedrichshain =

Soviet Architecture + Techno

Friedrichshain is located in the east of Berlin. Historically, during World War II Friedrichshain was one of the parts of the city which was almost destroyed so in the postwar times when it was part of East Berlin, dominating part of the architecture was rebuild by the Soviet Republic and it still strongly reminds us of the Soviet-era Moscow Boulevards. With time Friedrichshain experienced gentrification, a change of character in the neighborhood. It turned out to become one of the most trendy districts of Berlin with clubs, bars, and cinemas, however, the architecture of the district was not touched. These two facts created an interesting contrast between the appearance of the region with its conservative and rational architecture and its life.

Fox, Anthony. “Inside Secretive & Hedonistic World Of Germany’s Most Iconic Nightclub.” Don’t Die Wondering, 11 July 2020, www.dontdiewondering.com/germany-most-iconic-nightclub/.

Kim, Ella, et al. “Berlin’s Techno Mecca: Berghain.” ATRAVELthing.com, 5 Mar. 2019, www.atravelthing.com/berlins-techno-mecca-berghain/.

One of the great examples of this contrast is a nightclub called “Berghain”. Located in the heart of Friedrichshain, this place represents the whole concept of the region and its exclusivity. Berghain is located in a building with classic, old-fashioned, and Soviet architecture inside of which is located one of the toprated techno clubs in the world. Just like Friedrichshain, the nightclub itself includes a lot of different layers and hidden places that are not for everyone. Both Berghain and Friedrichshain have complicated structures, strong character, and confronting qualities and

that is what makes Friedrichshain so special and unique.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION : WEDDING

The guide of a broke artist.

So you are in Berlin to showcase your artistic, hipster outlook and that’s great. But how can you do that when the prices of Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg frighten you to your core? This is the introduction to the Cinderella story of Wedding.

AGOSTINA PANARITI

Food and drinks

Don’t have money to be a pub crawl? Go to a Späti, take a “Sterni” beer for 90 cent or if you want to be 40 cents fancier, get a “Berliner Kindl”. The little modest tables are great to chit-chat, and hey, maybe you can learn a few words. After drinking a couple of beers you are probably in need of some food, and without squinting too hard you will find several options around the corner. Turkish food is the way to go of course! The spinning Döner meat and the grilling vegetables are quickly sniffed by the nose of an empty stomach. Lahmacun are the perfect student deal aka Turkish pizza can be found at Örnek for 1 euro (“1.50 alles komplett – mit salat”). This place is basically a landmark, loyal clients come and order 50 Lahmacun which might make your cue that much longer. If meats aren’t your thing, a warm steamy Falafel will bring a smile on everyone’s faces.

Living

After you are settled in your WG, with your weird Rave DJ roommate and in need to furnish your empty room, Wedding has the perfect solution. Why go to IKEA when you can just roam the streets to find other people’s stuff that they don’t want anymore. Pans, mugs, office chairs, the world is your oyster! Better yet, go to another Kiez such as Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg for fancier alternatives as well. Fit as many art magazines in your bike basket and get inspired. If free things feel too good to be true, there are the flea markets. Not the good ones with stands, the ones laid down in the ground with a turkish man yelling “1 Euro 1 Euro 1 Euro!” like it’s some kind of auction to buy a crooked pot. The experience is one of a kind and if you get something for cheap or even free it somehow makes it much nicer than it actually is (in your eyes). Look at how much money you saved, money that you will spend at Boesner or Modulor for art expensive art supplies anyway.

Activities

So entertaining yourself and your other broke artist friend is essential. After all you need to get out of the laptop screen, take in some fresh air and engage your body to movements (let’s not forget we are still young!) As tempting as clubs may be, the surroundings are great to explore. Rent a cheap bike or even get your feet working with some comfortable shoes. For even more spice you can follow the waterway from Panke, to Nordufer to Plötzensee. Google says it is a former borough of Wedding, now a part of Mitte but we will just

ignore that for now. It is a wonderful spot to take a swim during summer, or winter if you are brave. Either way, it will be a great few hours.

60

Reminder: Don’t party too hard and get your assignments and briefings finished in time.

ABOUT BERLIN 3 - Wedding

6465

During the time when Berlin was divided, the site of the park was the border strip of the Berlin Wall and the area was off limits from 1961 to 1989. After reunification the no-man’sland became a public park.

Mauerpark was officially opened exactly five years after the Wall fell on 9 November 1994. Its reconstruction work was overseen by landscape architect Gustav Lange.

“The Wall was an edifice of fear. On November 9th, it became a place of joy.”

Horst Köhler

66

A place of joy, this is what Mauerpark is today. The park is named after the memorial of the Berlin wall witch used to run across it.

It is absolutely amazing to think that now the wall in this park is a place where people meet, make art and express themselves, but not too long ago a wall just like that one was the cause of devision and sufferance.

The graffiti hall of fame is often mistaken for the actual Berlin Wall, but in a way is not a bad thing. It is as if the wall went trough a process of reclamation. First of all by the Berliners and shortly followed by artists from all over the world. These people continue to change this small space and contin-

ue doing so everyday with an amazing variety of styles and concepts.

Mauerpark has a lot more to offer than graffiti. In fact, this place brings joy to everybody.

Whether you want to do some shopping in the flea market, or listen to some music at the karaoke, eat some food from the many stands, or even buy a beer from the screaming guy with the bike horn that only speaks Bavarian... If you hate all of this you can just come and find your little piece of grass to sit and enjoy the sunshine.

So... come and enjoy this amazing place!

Staying in

Mitte during the lockdown?

1.

Mitte is known for being in, you know, the middle of Berlin. Because of this, you can find a lot of activities, even when almost everything is shut down. So for your first stop, you’re going to the Checkpoint Charlie. Achtung! Don’t forget your mask. Observe the architecture around it and take some photos.

ANTONIA C. FLORES

Moving on, make your way to, obviously, the Brandenburg Gate. You don’t want to miss one of the most famous places in Berlin. And the best part: you don’t have to worry about it being closed... And it’s free!

2.

I got you!

3.

You’ve already walked a good distance, so maybe it’s time to get some food. What about something sweet at Rausch Schokoladenhaus? It’s said to have the best chocolates and you can also have waffles! But remember, just on the go, no place to sit there for now.

A one-day pit stop in Mitte and you don’t know what to do while in lockdown? Don’t worry! You can still visit some touristic places during your stay.

After you’re composed again, it would have been great if you could have gone to the Museum Island to visit some museums (duh!) Sadly, almost (if not all) are closed. However, there’s still the Lustgarten for you to relax for some time. Pay attention! You may witness one or more performances. After all, Berlin is the city of artists.

4.

Be careful!

I know it’s hard sometimes to travel around without knowing what’s exactly open and what’s not during a lockdown. So, in order to help you make your experience a little easier, let me guide you through some cool places you can visit whilst in Corona times.

5.

Good luck!

I know you didn’t have luck with the museums because they’re closed. But you know what’s not? The churches! You can still have a good look at the architecture of the past visiting the Zionskirche. You can only take pictures, it’s not necessary to say your prayers (forgive me lord). But thinking about how things are going, maybe asking for this pandemic to be over isn’t a bad idea.

By now, I think you have enough of walking around, maybe it’s time to head back to your lodging. Grab a few beers from the nearest supermarket and enjoy the last minutes of the day drinking alone. (Nobody will see you cry, it’s okay.)

Next time hopefully you’ll visit other places.

Nowadays second hand is getting more popular but I still remeber the days, back in high school, when some kids got bullied because they bought worn clothing. Itʻs a good thing that people are getting aware and buy more used clothes than fast fashion. But I have to admit some stores are really pricy (not all of them). Now letʻs go thrifting! I will show you some of the nicest thrift stores in Mitte.

The second one is the Pick N Weight Store, located at Hackescher Markt. It has a cozy vibe with nice music and a lovely interior! They sort everything by color, itʻs an eye candy. But this store is one of the priciest second hand stores in Berlin. Come with a high budget.

Abandoned Spreepark

URBAN LEGEND LOST IN TIME

·

THERE ARE RUMOURS

Today Spreepark could easily be called “The Land of Unfulfilled Dreams”. A lot of people are returning to it just to revive the old memories although this is illegal because the park is off limits.

There is a rumour that a woman got chased down by the guard dogs and got her hand stuck in the fence. This lead to one of her fingers get amputated.

· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·

Another rumour circulating around the park is that a 90-year-old woman jumped onto the Ferris wheel in a nostalgic attempt to enjoy the park, when the wind suddenly moved it and she got stuck in there. The fire brigade rescued her.

1969 marked the opening of “Kulturpark Plänterwald” the only amusement park available at that time in Germany. Many people flocked to see the wonders it had to offer. Located in Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin, just north of Plänterwald, this location proved to be the perfect place for it. Due its success it received funding from the senate and changed name to “Spreepark GmbH”.

Later on the years, Norbert Witte, the director of the Amusement Park sought to gather funds in order to modernize the establishment given the fact that it attracted over 1.5 million people each year and wanted to add more to its success.

Norbert Witte went bankrupt in 2002. Out of business and starving for money, he moved to Lima, Peru with his family, trying his luck over there. His attempt to run a Lunapark was also a fail. Debts raised to 11 million Euros.

In order to get back the finances, Norbert and his 20-year-old son started smuggling cocaine to Europe. The illegal business turned to prison when they got caught with 180 kg of cocaine in a merry-go-round called “The Flying Carpet” on their way back in Berlin.

In 2003 Norbert got sentenced to 6 years in prison in Germany and his son got himself 20 years in Peru.

Latest news tell that the park is currently undergoing a transformation. The goal of this is to turn Spreepark into a public park for all residents and guests of Berlin. This project will make the current attractions and rides of the Amusement Park part of the artistic scenery.

It is being rumoured that the heritage protected Egg- House (Eierhäuschen) will be rehabilitated and turned into a restaurant with a beer garden and a jetty.

The “Grand Reopening” is scheduled to happen in 2022 but with all the travel and pandemic restrictions currently in place this will prove a challenge.

Dividing bricks, souls full of doom. Long lost meaning to be found. Cross the way, undo the coup. A bridge to find yourself unbound.

Fly away where nothing binds you. Do not stray on vengeful ground. Cross the bridge right through & through. For life’s too short to go around.

Freedom is what love is too: built for all and by all crowned. Walk away from past that’s true to future quest much more profound.

In the early 1890s, production began of a special beer in the Bavarian-Munich style called Berliner Kindl. This soon enjoyed great popularity and led to the two hundred thousand hectoliter mark being exceeded. The beer’s name referred to Munich’s heraldic figure, popularized in the 19th century under the name Münchner Kindl, and possibly also to the Münchner Kindl brewery named after it.
