The Biennial Exhibition encourages Bermuda's artists to reach out 'from their comfort zones' Helen Jardine
“An exhibition with strong international credibility” is how the curator of the latest Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) show describes the pieces in it. Bermuda Biennal 2010 Exhibition of Contemporary Art, sponsored by Bacardi Limited, opened on Friday and runs until November 26, features 20 local artists and 42 pieces of “diverse, challenging art”.

“The jurors engaged in a highly critical, deeply reflective process of art review,” said BNG Curator Sophie Cressall. “They were committed to examining the submitted art through the international lenses within which they work, and this has led to a very tight, cohesive exhibition, which has strong international credibility.” International guests

This is the ninth Biennial to be featured at the gallery, juried this year by distinguished international guests Veerle Poupeye, Executive Director National Gallery of Jamaica, and Tumelo Mosaka, Curator of Contemporary Art, University of Illinois. International juror Veerle Poupeye said: “The selection process for the 2010 Bermuda Biennial presented difficult challenges for us that seemed inherent to its location and the history. “In making our selections, we felt compelled to move beyond the already ascribed visual vocabulary that reflects figuratively on the Bermudian landscape, the all-too-comfortable ‘island aesthetic’ that can be seen in many of the local galleries and is well supported by the local art market and cultural tourism.
Antoine Hunt will have his work on display.
“The exhibition we have selected, therefore, does not seek to provide a broad survey of the contemporary art scene in Bermuda.” The exhibition features 20 local artists, including Meredith Andrews, John Battersbee, Louisa Bermingham Flannery, William Collieson, James Cooper, Graham C. Foster, John A. Gardner, Charlie Godet Thomas, Kathy Harriott, Scott Hill, Antoine A. R. Hunt, N. Christina Hutchings, Sunell Lombard, Ian Macdonald- Smith, Bill Ming, Kevin Morris, Bryan Ritchie, Alan C. Smith, Michael Walsh, and Charles Zuill. Title sponsor Bacardi Limited, Managing Director, Michael Brennan said: “The Biennial Exhibition, one of the most dynamic events on the art calendar, inspires Bermuda’s contemporary artists to strive beyond their normal comfort zones to greater heights of artistic exploration. “We need to celebrate this spirit for life - this vigour of heart, mind, and soul to reach beyond limits, wherever it is found.”
