S. Domingos village, Portugal

The challenge proposed was to design a museum

S. DOMINGOS MINE MUSEUM

to the deactivated mine of S. Domingos, which is located in

2008/2009

Alentejo close to the border with the Spain. There are three main elements to be considered in this site: the industrial ruins, the old village and a transformed territory.

The S. Domingos village, more precisely the Corta

(a big excavation), is set as the best place to locate the museum. Here was the centre of the copper extraction. We’re facing a fascinating site because of its huge dimension; the relation between the water and the steep topography; and finally the different colours and textures.

This place conducted the creation of a museum as

a unique and serene space in order to enhance the strong landscape experience that the context offers.

Conceptually, the interior of the museum is embraced

by a compact concrete layer, inside where people circulate. This way, from the exterior it equals the qualities of weight and mass present in the surrounding rock excavation.

The building is designed as a monolithic volume; its

structure is composed by a central rigid core and structural walls. The art galleries are displayed around the central core and are illuminated by patios. The floor height varies alternately as well as its patio dimensions. This way the facade gains a dynamic variation that implies a sense of movement. 3

The site for the new Complex of Luxury Housing,

COMPLEX OF LUXURY HOUSING

next to the BasĂlica da Estrela (cathedral) and the Jardim da

2007/2008

Estrela (public garden), is situated in an important area of Lisbon’s historical centre, the Estrela neighbourhood. The introduction of a new building into this context poses questions of integration with the eighteenth century cathedral.

In order to redesign the urban space, the new

L-shaped building will fit into a gap within the existing housing block. It respects the continuity of the two streets, while still enabling the people who pass by to cross under it. The weight of the building is distributed on the sloped topography through five points that serve as vertical circulation.

The main concept of the project is to provide an

exterior private space for each house and position all the houses towards the best view, namely the cathedral and the Tejo river. There are two types of housing typologies; the duplex T4 flats are positioned on the first three floors, while the T0 studios are on the last two floors. The roof terraces are exposed to direct sunlight and a panoramic view to the city as it descends towards the Tejo river.

The site for the new theatre is in the edge between a

CARNIDE THEATRE

small historical centre and high buildings. The urban design

2007/2008

of the historical centre indicates how the building is placed, parallel to the long and narrow streets, forming a patio with the same proportions. A pedestrian street, in the continuity of Mestra’s alley is created to connect the town square, passing through the theatre entrance, with the public garden. The ‘black box’ theatre’s volume is located on the east side of the building as a transition of scale between the small houses and the high buildings, while the gallery space and the study room are located on the west side. A covered entrance extends the interior foyer and café, and also serves as a crossing point in Mestra’s alley.

The site for the new Student Residence is located

XABREGAS STUDENT RESIDENCE

in Xabregas, an old industrial zone of Lisbon, close to Tejo

2006/2007

River. A harbour for shipping containers, an industrial railway and a high speed road cut the city off from the river. The existing complex of old factory and storage buildings forms a horizontal platform that contrasts with a few high grain silos.

The design for the new building takes into account

this characteristic of contrasting heights. A 12m wide s-shaped structure sits atop a ground floor base, which houses all social facilities, such as the library, study room, laundry room, retail area, gymnasium and handball court. The whole structure culminates in a 50m tower at the north end and also contains student housing. The design of the structure has the added advantage of freeing up considerable ground space for the city. One of the enclosed squares that is created by the s-shape can be used as a meeting point. It is also a connection between the city and the river.

The Daphne house is a symmetrical arrangement of

DAPHNE HOUSE EXPANSION

a sleeping wing and a general living wing that are related by

2005/2006

an entrance space behind which is a screened kitchen area. The wings flank a large swimming pool which is the major feature in the design.

The project is an addition to the house and is

composed of two spaces, the space of the material and the space of light. The new addition is located in the north-eastern part of the house nest to the swimming pool. A volume with the width of the swimming pool is placed within an excavated area aligned by the two wings of the house. An expanse of water is displayed in order to make a smooth transition from the old house to the new addition.

On the ground level, there is a space all covered with

slate, cut in 4cm slabs and piled up the walls, floor and ceiling. Below the ground level, there is a space illuminated by the reflection of sun light on the surrounding exterior space.
