STUDIO 4 PROJECT

DR. IR. ALWIN S. SOMBU, MT

When you think of school, you probably think about all the unpleasantaries of studying, of deadlines and homeworks. Yet you probably also think about all the good times you had with your friends.

The main concept for this high school is balance, which is implemented in the form and mass, a balance of curved and rectangular mass. Aside from the form and mass, balance is also implemented in roof shape. From the traditional julang ngapak roof of the classroom building, to the modern curved trussed roof of the multifunction/gym building.

That’s the thing about school, it’s all about maintaining balance. Too much studying will make you bored, while too much playing around makes you, well, dumb.

CLASSROOM BUILDING Consists of classrooms and laboratories with direct connection to the library

ADMINISTRATION BUILDING Contains offices for school staffs, located in the middle of classrooms and gym for easier access

MULTIFUNCTION HALL Also functions as a gymnasium for daily use

The whole classroom building is equally divided into three parts with a void in the middle to let sunlight in to each classrooms. The facade uses a combination of slanted wood panel and wiremesh to filter any harsh light from outside. This is done to prevent any flashbacks at the front of classrooms that can disrupt the lesson.

STUDIO 5 PROJECT

Bandung may be known for its modern architecture, specifically the smooth lines of streamline moderne. But behind all the glory, there was a transition era between traditional architecture and what we know as modern architecture, be it a transition in form or materials.

its bamboo canopy and open spaces, is supposed to signify traditionalism. The two meets and defines a whole specific era. Meanwhile, one of the music trends during that era is flapper jazz, with its walking bass and constant improvisation. The spirit of walking bass is depicted in the curved and flowing form of the building.

The concert hall consisted of two different mass. The main building is significantly larger than the other, which depicted as modernity. While the other, with

MAIN BUILDING Consists of main auditorium, lobby, and performers’ area

PUBLIC SPACE A lot of locals would hang out at the street near the site, so a public space would hopefully fulfill their needs for a place to hang

Since the overall design theme is based on the art deco era, the lobby carried the same spirit, which uses a lot of wood panel and brass accents. Patterned cement tiles are used to add a touch of localism. Pictured above is the front desk, which also serves as ticketing station for the concert hall.

STUDIO 6 PROJECT

WILLIE YOGATAMA, ST, M.ARCH

In the world that uses professionalism to define one’s success, we tend to neglect the fun aspect of things. We go by our daily lives trying to get our work done with a straight face, just to get things over with.

Co-working space promotes productivity for the user, while also maintaining the fun aspect through various levellings, which also evokes the curiosity within the user to explore around. As for the apartment itself, we tend to look at apartments or dwellings as something that’s private and quiet, or in other words, boring. In order to keep things fun, the apartment holds a playful stacking form.

Located in the bustling area of Martadinata and Purnawarman junction, the site is close to various educational institutions and offices. This is the reason why a co-working space is chosen as a main function of the mixed use.

APARTMENT UNITS Consists of studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, and 3 bedroom units. Some units have an open garden SWIMMING POOL Located at the 5th floor of the apartment building

The apartment’s facade utilizes tropical materials such as wood, teracotta breeze blocks, and plants to make the dwellers feel more at home. Every units has their own rather large balcony, so that the balcony will not be useless and can be used to hang out or such. The units are mostly targeted for families, as the site is located in a crowded area, thus making it much more expensive.

Keeping on The Loop OCEAN TOURISM VISITOR CENTER IN CILINCING, NORTH JAKARTA

FINAL STUDIO PROJECT

DR. G. PELE WIDJAJA, ST, MT

Jakarta coast and ocean has a lot to offer in the tourism department, from the historical first landing of VOC, to various entertainment spots. But all of these spots seem too separate from each other.

Information about Jakarta’s ocean and tourism is given in form of gallery, library, and audio visual. Transportation hub is used to accomodate tourists who want to visit nearby places after receiving information.

This visitor center is located at Cilincing, North Jakarta, near Si Pitung’s house. The area itself is not as popular as Ancol or Angke, so this visitor center is supposed to boost the popularity of the area.

Supporting functions are available in form of shops, community center, and services. For example, if tourists are interested in diving at Kepulauan Seribu, they can simply visit the diving center inside the building and buy equipments or even get diving lessons.

The visitor center itself contains three main functions which is information, transportation, and supporting functions for ocean tourism.

PUBLIC SPACE To accomodate marine school students and for visitors to hang out

BUS ACCESS With a capacity of three large buses and six minibuses to accomodate visitors who want to visit nearby tourist attractions

Since the site is located next to a marine school and a tourist spot, the site can be used as a hangout spot for visitors and students alike. Open public space on the ground floor with an entrance to the building also functions as a pathway from marine school to Rumah Si Pitung. Since a part of the site is used up for bus circulation, the public space is moved on the upper floor, which can be accessed from inside the building and a staircase next to entrance from Rumah Si Pitung.

21

architecture // interior

Above — skylight system to minimize the usage of artificial lighting Visitor center’s interior is kept simple, with white paint, terrazzo flooring, and wood accent. The main focus is the looping circulation with stairs and ramps, to emphasize the main two function which is information and supporting functions. The idea is that both information and supporting function helps each other out. For example, if a visitor finds information about Jakarta’s historical harbor, they might be interested to visit the harbor themselves. So they could visit a travel agent provided inside the building. This also works the other way in which a visitor has just come from Kepulauan Seribu, they can find informations about other ocean tourism in Indonesia, such as Bunaken, so they can visit there someday. Both functions loop on each other, hence the circulation system is looping as well, so the visitors can feel the experience of “travelling” within informations. Or in other words, literally keeping in the loop!

COMPETITION ENTRY

GERRY N. NOOR IVENA EMANUELA

Designing a house for a family is one thing, but to make it a home is not a simple task to do. One essential part of a home, especially when built for families, is how to maintain a sense of togetherness within the space.

with the kitchen and dining room at the front of the house. This symbolizes the importance of cuisine in social cultures. The dining room itself is designed as a sunken table, to add the closeness feeling to it, and to use less loose furnitures.

In our culture, food is often used as a media to socialize. We hang out with our friends over some drinks, socializing with extended families over dinner, going on lunch dates, and so on.

The house also has a patio in the front, so it can be used as a guest room as well. Since the site is located on a slope, to minimize the amount of cut and fills on the terrain, the house uses different height levels on each floors.

With this idea in mind, the house is designed

At the back of the house there’s a small courtyard with plants, and on the upper floors it is used as a void in order to create cross ventilation from the front to the back of the house, since the side parts of the house are just walls.

Second floor plan

9. Family common room 10. Bathroom 11. Master bedroom

The house’s form has a decrease on each levels, this is so that each level can get good natural lighting, either from the facade glass or the skylight over the stairwell. On the top level there’s the master bedroom along with an ensuite. The backside of the bed is a glass wall facing the void to make the room seem more spacious.

The children’s bedroom are kept small and functional in order for them to spend less time in solitude and can do their activities outside of their bedroom. This will also help both children to socialize and spend time together.

2018 HIGHLIGHTS MAGAZINE SUBMISSION The prompt was “equality”, this illustration was inspired by a line from Les Miserables: “here is the thing about equality, everyone is equal when they’re dead”, hence the skeletons.

2019 HIGHLIGHTS MAGAZINE SUBMISSION The prompt was “virtual identity”, this illustration was about how you can be anyone in the internet. The message says “you are no one, and yet you are everyone”, it means that you’re just a data between billions of other identities, but on the other hand, you also represent a community in the internet.
