BY ARCH OUT LOUD, UNITED STATE ROLE: TEAM CAPTAIN

SOLO TEAM I. PROLOGUE

“Without just one nest, A bird can call the world home, Life is your career.”-

Chuck Palahniuk. Will there truly be freedom, or a utopia for humanity? As taking part in the Home 2020 competition by arch out loud, it allowed me to redefine the various interpretation of Home. Home is the element of stability, security and authority. Beneath this imprison society we call home, where Humanity has advocated a fair and law abiding society, and yet individualism and freedom is supposedly achieved. Could humanity truly be free from this dystopian society? Life is the element of spontaneous nature, its unpredictable future, and its competitiveness among human society emerge across the nature of life. It is perhaps unfair, but its inequality and imperfection among humanity has allowed humankind to experience the spectrum of emotions, which gives the purpose of life.

2020, a disastrous decade has put political, global pandemic, economy, global health, and wildlife on notice. As conflicts drastically emerged through protest, in the act of trade war, and the aggression of violence. The tension of current society is escalating, whereas the pressurizing socio-economic atmosphere has widened the gap between human division. These movements shape the future of humanity and increase the conflicts between individuals. What if the future pressures our society to be constraint into a smaller dimension, where humanity has to live in a close proximity of limited space. Will human extinction erupt to the surface? Human desire is where the true problem lies, every individual is hoping their desire to be fulfilled. This is the dystopian world us humanity has created in the architecture of life. How could human desire to be fulfilled? How could an architectural system effectuate the blur within the boundary of inequality, but at the same time achieve democratic space and minimizing the dissension in life? Emanating from sci-fic orientated genre, reimagining a survival framework that speculate the merge between the over-dominance of AI technology, nature and humanity. A laboratory that archives wildlife, nature, manifest city construct and revitalises human life on virtual reality. Formulating an architectural system that effectuate the blur within the boundary of inequality, but at the same time achieving sustainable yet democratic space and minimizing the dissension in life. Resolving humanity in a closed proximity, future uninhabitable global outbreak, and making a statement of today society.

IMPRISONMENT OF TODAY’s SOCIETY INSPIRATIONAL COLLAGE PRISON CELL LIVING. Humanity is perhaps engineered to survive in such high pressurising imprison loophole. In the age of individualism and anthropocentrism, humanity is cruel and competitive, trapped by this dystopian instinct and perception. Emanating from sci-fic orientated genre, the many stories and theories are a metaphor of today society. A demonstration of how human desire could devastate mankind. How could human desire to be fulfilled? How could an architectural system effectuate the blur within the boundary of inequality, but at the same time achieve democratic space and minimizing the dissension in life?

AFTERLIFE

Restoration of Earth. Whilst humanity is in deep hibernation, artificial

intelligence has established purification across Earth; water filtration, ven-

tilation filtration, and the recontruction of land, to prolong the many years of human survival. In the year of 2077, global warming, pollution, sea - level rising, contamination have finally come to its final limit. With Earth is inhabitable again, the years of preperation has come to a close, forming a new chapter in human survival.

Revitallize humanity in the righteous path. The chosen few who proceed-

ed to the rehabilitation zone has given a second chance of life. Through the

millions of archive data; Human history, science, politics, principle, AI has re-educated humanity through past’s failure and success. Uniting humanity in creating a better living environment, socially, politically and mentally. Attention to environment is cruicial, and raising awareness in avoidance of historical failed footsteps.

Reintrepretation of the ARK. Whilst the re-adaptation of earth as a home

is cruical to humanity, the ARK which archived history of humanity; re-

sources, technology, AI factory, knowledge, history, organism DNA, and human race. A monumental piece of architecture that reminds humanity of its purpose and influence. Yet, a dystopian vision is a glimpse of utopia that reassures in life virtually and realistically.

Re-stablishment of law and order. AI has become the principle of right or

wrong. Manifesting the living standard and attitude to the future of humanity. Accompanying humanity in the guidance of life regeneration.

Re-adaptation of AI. Humanity is under the influence of AI, where life

could be constrained by its determination. Its spontaneous nature is cor-

rupted, yet can AI truly become our true companion or a tool that could step down at certain times or gone for good in allowing the unpredictable behaviour of life in humanity? Or AI and humanity’s conflicts erupt to the surface.

HAKATA CITY, JAPAN

STUDIO EXERCISE

Analogous drawing. Canal City Hakata is a modern exemplar of ‘spaces of exchange’

in a form of a one stop destination with fusion between Japanese and American culture. Built in the 1990s as part of urban regeneration in Fukuoka Japan despite facing a dying economic crisis, the project gained international attention with its unique architecture upon its completion. It was an ambitious project due to the scale of the private development as well as the cultural influence from the Architect in-charge, Jerde Partnership. Being a mixed-use development that is hyper local and hyper global all at once, it was necessary to integrate ‘nature’ as a unifying element such as the iconic man-made canal that mimics the Naka River, and canyone like geometrical shape and greenery along the experiential journey through the spaces to amplify and reiterate the concept of ‘a city within a city’. These ideas of conceptual innovation and symbolism were introduced at a time of uncertainty change and transition in Japan’s social and economic well-being that I think is very admiring and honest in this project.

FUTURE CITY

The aim of Future city is to take a critical stance towards contemporary neoliberal

urban regeneration, which all too often produces generic architecture for the benefit of private investors. The word exchange is key throughout the studio, investigation of how spaces for exchange can be constructed architecturally in regards to form, scale, materiality, use and experience and also explore how architecture can be used as a political and social endravour as much as it is an artistic, aesthetic and technical pursuit.

OBJECTIVES

Taking initiative towards the state of domestic health issues across Manchester.

Understanding the different scenarios and background of individuals, contructing a space for exchange in the field of healing Manchester phyiscally, mentalling and spiritually. Through the understandings of different programmes from a mental health centre stand point, their benefits and solutions towards users. Moreover, taking references from historical healing temple, in create a collboration between modern and historical strategies. Translates these learning into a political yet democratic medium to raise health awareness as part of regenerating Manchester city.

STAGING HISTORY OF MANCHESTER

YEAR III (2018 - 2019) NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY, UNITED KINGDOM

GAY VILLAGE, MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Dystopian society exists in each and every corner across the every edge of the

world, it’s inevitable. In the context of Manchester, It has regarded as the home of Manchester for the LGBT community. It is also known as the second city after the capital city of London. Historically, the city of Manchester was heavily industrial based, embedded with the name Cottonpolis. In the 18 century, Manchester was famous for manufacturing wool, cotton, linen and silk. Where the average working-class community worked in tough conditions with earnings of a poorly paid labourer compared to the high class. City centre was encircled by densely-packed working class, in which residents live and work under miserable condition. The life of working class was draughtful and being treated unequally. During the end of 18th century and the end of 19th century, once popular for manufacturing cotton, wool, linen and silk has being into a decay, several old industries went into a steep decline. In a result, workers suffer from out of employment, bad living environment and metal health problem. Social problems deepened, and the city found itself labouring and destitute. Of now, due to the IRA bombing, there were urban regeneration masterplan in 19 centuries. Consequently, Manchester is one of the second-fastest growth city to visit in United Kingdom between 1998 and 2008. By Bringing in financial and investment businesses, tourism and international businesses, leisure and cultural activities, residential area within the city centre have improved dramatically. The scale of deindustrialisation challenge was achieved successfully, but there are still fewer jobs than it did in 1951. This suggest that it is on a new pathway of knowledge-based economic growth.

SITE RESEARCH

Through researches, there have been enormous reports about the poor health condition of the city. Several factors such as social class differences, discrimination, LGBT community cases on isolation and homophobia, poverty, homeless, inequality. Little actions is being done by manchester city council in addressing these factors. Through news reports, futher understanding how Manchester has been described as having the lowest life expectancy in accordance to BBC news. Further mental health issues statistic is illustrated below.

In such high pressuring society, mental health is generated. Discrimination is one of the major factor, based on the research as stated by Manchester City Council Health and Wellbeing Board. Poverty, social exclusion, homeless, and unemployed are contributed to 46% of the locals in manchester experiencing deprivation. 95% of citizens not being paid emplyment, 20% not being in settled accomdation. LGBT community, transgender pupils are suffering from mental health contributed to 64% of all. Prolong waiting times across north, central, and south Manchester mental health centre. Most importantly, mental health problem in Manchester is seriously higher than national averages. With Manchester has significantly low life expectancy.

EXISTING WELLING BEING CENTRE BARRIER

In references to the exterior design of each mental health centre being collaged out. A dull unpleasing exterior, with an institutionalised interior is often discovered. Isolated yet unmemorable to imagine. A poor percetage of recovery is being shown on the collage. The idea of wellbeing centre is mostly blind in and unnoticable. Yet each different wellbeing centre is spread out across Manchester to create difficulties for people.

HATE CRIME

Discrimination is one of the biggest issue in hate crime, crime is motivated by hostility, a particular prejudice towards an individual’s personal characteristic. According to the Manchester’s hate crime strategy 2016-2019, City council discovered verbal insult and physical assault are being generated, these actions are associated with hate towardsdisability, race, religion belief, sexual orientation, and trans. Statistic provided.

MANCHESTER MEDICAL CENTRE’s TYPOLOGIES

A look at the common typologies of medical, wellbeing, and mental health centre is rather insititutional, rigid, and conventional. The use of red brick window wall, curtain wall, use of wood exterior, and interior drywall, green and blue color symbolisms. These have proven that simplicity, and color can hugely benefits the mental state and emotion. Most of the centre has focused on the technological advancement of medical treatement verballing and physically as listed down below.

ECOTHERAPY

A treatement that involves doing outdoor activities in nature, a regular structural activity that led by a professional instructor. A clsoe connection to nature, such as vegetation, gardening, and outdoor exercising.

Historically, this is a temple that provides a space for relaxation exchange. To bring people together, as well as its architecture features. Its remarkble and elegant. An architecture that could create a difference in improving the life expectency within the citizens. This is a reference to my project programmes where, I could create a modern healing temple in translating a new generation of healing temple in the modern world. Using nature as main theme to create outdoor atmosphere in an indoor scenarios to create an escape within the city. Bringing citizens in Manchester back to nature a new way to heal their illness and distress. The combination of techology, nature, outdoor programmes, and a modern industrial typology to create a new impression for a modern helaing temple. This has allowed me to take reference of traditional architecture features such as the use of columns and arches to creating an imitation of historical ornamentation. A elegancy from its past architecture.

DEVELOPMENT

Site consideration. In the selection of a site, its true hidden nature is what grasp my at-

tention the most. A way to set a boundary from its outside world, forming its own district and neighbourhood. A strip away from its high pressurising society, create a contrast from its surrounding, becoming the centre of attention.

S

tacking concept. Adapting MVRDV expo 2000’s concept of organization, a stacking tower of attraction that embedded with nature and outdoor activities. Experimenting the beneficial elements of different attractions, by prioritising the importance of each activites by how it could benefits circulation wihtin the site, structure integrity, and the demand of natural sunlight and ventilation. A botanical tower that stands out from its existing site creates a sense of surprise within the environment. This appoach could uplift my design thinking by identifying the tight and narrow site, where high-rise is the way to design my architecture.

Interlocking of space. In achieving an amusement park experience, the concept of inter-

locking of space between different activities but at the same it has its own independent of required spatial organization is essential. The experience of each visitors are distinctly importantant, allowing the users to experirence the different activities attach and detach from each other within their journey. A way to encourage users to have their own interpretation and collaboration of how to appoach the space, and which junction point they are likely to be dwell into is the purpose of my appoaching in designing.

S

ectional drawing & plan drawing. An 2D-dimensional approach that allow me to express my design freely due to the constraint of the limited space on a horizontal plane. Sectional drawing allows me to start from focusing on each programmes’ junction points, their relationship between one another and its’ verticality of visitor’s journey and experience, as well as appoaching the design internally rather than externally. The design massing form slowly submerged from the distinct interaction between each programmes organizational thinking through a sectional cut design standpoint. The linkage of each is key. From then on, slowly translate my sectional thinking onto a 3D massing model, playing with each massing block in coming up with the design in the end.

WEAVING (FACADE ORIENTED)

C

onceptualizing weaving into architecture. This project is driven by the studio theme fashion, through fabric and knitting in translating that into an architecture. The chosen element of this studio is glass, where it concentrates our appoaches between the collaboration of glass and fabric. A sense of lightness, and the essence of transparent is suggested.

Weaving glass. The concept of my year II project is inspired by the

fluidity of how clothes is created. Knitting, and its fabrication of weaving within clothes. The junction between glass and weaving, exploring the maximum bending of glass in creating a weaving glass facade that manifest a local weaving glass art museum itself. It is indeed a work of art in terms of its architecture. A sense of transparency is explored through revealing and concealing across the museum, demonstrate through the use of material such as translucent and transparent glazing. Creating a sense of lightness and fluidity of weaving fabric. Visual interaction across the museum is experimented with openess and intimacy of concentrating visitors within the architecture. The facade is therefore designed to compromised the concept of openess and intimacy in accordance to the visitors experience.

INTERLACING RIBBONS

Approaching the design from many perspectives, we studied the site context & the history; exam-

ined and analysed the site to identify the inherent characteristics, reviewed the constraints and explored the opportunities. References are drawn from successful local and international past projects of comparable contexts. Our site has 3 inherent defining characters, “Waterfront”, “Undulating Parkscape” also an “Above and under Infrastructure” context. The functional program are organised under these 3 characters but woven together. By drawing historical references of the evolving coastline, which has always been about enhancing the east-west connectivity of the Hong Kong Island, we take on connection and movement as the design theme, using a series of interlacing ribbons as the organising element of the programs. The “Interlace” has becomes the identity and the placemaking device of the project. The unique waterfront location at the heart of Hong Kong features a panoramic view to the Victoria Harbour. Strategic and subtle level changes will enhance this experience of passive viewing of the Harbour as a “Stage”. To “Touch the Water” is another special feature of the water edge, we see great potentials for popular outdoor performance or cinema events to be hosted with a backdrop that is quintessentially Hong Kong. The design seeks to improve the well-being of the community and the environment, healthy living is being promoted with a variety of events which goes beyond the expectations in a regular park- a League standard X-Game venue for the young and adventurous; a family friendly urban farm also great for physical exercises. Bicycle lanes to enhance the safety of urban cycling, whether for transportation or leisure, is also a great contributing feature.
