CYCLE OF THOUGHT
TRUTH IN MATERIALS
The space design is inspired by the large open outdoor (sky phenomenons) and indoor space available of the existing site and it’s potential to be better utilised.
The aim was to reduce the use of material surface treatments and celebrate its natural character. Bare concrete walls, recycled timber and local bamboo are the main materials used in the design.
The concept of “cycle of thought” highlights the thought process and spatial interaction between a child and the learning environment as a stimulating way of education.

LIGHTNESS SILVER AWARD WINNER JUNIOR DESIGNER AWARDS 2010 LIGHTING DESIGN COMPETITION
DESIGN BRIEF To create a lighting design aimed at Malaysian urban market. COMPETITION OBJECTIVE 1. To encourage the talented new designers and support the new ideas and creations in product design. 2. To expand and revitalise the local design industry and market through innovative designs. JUDGING CRITERIA Creativity (overall concept) Marketability Functionality Material used TOTAL

BERNADETTE QUAH I PORTFOLIO I INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
83
INSPIRATION The design inspiration stemmed from the realisation that most lighting products in the local market place were only able to function in one way. For example, a typical lamp could only be used in one area at a time and was stationary, conditioned by a plug point. This insight brought about the idea of a modular LIGHTINGÒSYSTEMÒTHATÒCOULDÒALLOWÒ¹EXIBILTYÒINÒTHEÒ use of the product. Like rechargable batteries, EACHÒPARTÒCOULDÒBEÒSELFÒSUFµCIENTÒANDÒRECHARGEDÒ when neccessary. An image that related most to this concept was the dandelion spore dispersal phenomenon.
84
BERNADETTE QUAH I PORTFOLIO I INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
LIGHTNESS MODULARITY STYLE 1 / The key words established to give direction to the design was “Lightness, Modularity & Style”.
1
2 / Some of the ideas as seen in the sketch was to have it as a pendant light with light tubes that can be plugged in and out as needed by the user. After deliberation, it was decided that the product and function would be best suited as a free standing light. The circular core would be the centre to charge the individual light tubes.
2
BERNADETTE QUAH I PORTFOLIO I INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
85
LED lights are the source of illumination.
The individual light tubes are made of arcylic.
Each light tube is fixed with a plug and to be inserted in to the circular charging core.
86
BERNADETTE QUAH I PORTFOLIO I INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
MULTI – TASK Each 66 individual light tubes attached to the Core can be unplugged and used in different areas according to the needs of the user. To stand the lighting tubes beyond its core, they may be placed in cups, holders or just left on the surface to brighten up the day!
FUNCTION To recharge the lighting tubes, they may be inserted into the core again.
LOWER ENERGY CONSUMPTION The design is in line with the current emphasis on eco-friendly design and lifestyle. By being a modular system, Lightness distributes the light source according to the needs to the people in an area. This also enables a person to judge the degree of light needed and determine the amount of light tubes required.
STYLISH DESIGN Lightness’s universal design is described as clean and simple with curve linear lines and a fun twist in its functional spike - like form.

The design idea came from insight on what busy urban Malaysians usually do at home daily after a day out or a long week. The obvious would be to read, watch television, take naps, ORÒJUSTÒµNDÒDIFFERENTÒWAYSÒTOÒWINDÒDOWNÒAFTERÒAÒ long day or week. It is also common that many people visit each other during the many multi-cultural celebrations in Malaysia. Images of family and FRIENDSÒSQUEEZINGÒONÒCOUCHESÒANDÒONÒTHEÒ¹OORÒ come to mind. Aha! Ideation began with the aim to design a seat furniture that is large enough to be shared by a few people and may also be folded and kept away when unused to save space.
89
90
DESIGN CONCEPT “Samarataâ€? translates to “on equal groundâ€?. It celebrates the goal of equality among Malaysia’s multi-racial community. The design is inspired by the Malaysian practice OFĂ’SITTINGĂ’ONҚOORĂ’MATSĂ’ hTIKARiĂ’INĂ’-ALAY Ă’THATĂ’CANĂ’ be shared with many people.
