H
enry Wadsworth Longfellow, a 19-century poet and Mountains Region of western Maine, the rugged coastline of resident of Portland, referred to the city as a “Jewel by the Acadia National Park, the sandy beaches of southern Maine, and Sea.” Throughout the Greater Portland area, there are plenty of the breath-taking White Mountains of New Hampshire. u reasons to say it’s a gem. The city of Portland offers a small-town feel. It’s rich in history, culture, art, live music, museums, shops, restaurants, pubs and microbreweries. Parks and green space can be found around many corners. Located on Casco Bay, you’ll hear city sounds combined with the mew of herring gulls and rhythmic gong of bell buoys. The Old Port, with its cobblestone streets, gas light fixtures and classic brick buildings, oozes charm and vitality. From the Portland Observatory on Munjoy Hill, you can see the entire city and Casco Bay. Other special places to visit include Fort Williams Park with its 90 acres of gently rolling grassy hills, spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, fort ruins and Portland Headlight, the oldest lighthouse in the state. From Eartha, the oversized globe at DeLorme to the Maine Wildlife Park and Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, there’s so much to see and do. The towns of Greater Portland are pedestrian and bicycle friendly. Within minutes you can be at lighthouses, beaches, lakes, islands, theaters, art galleries and more. And it is a convenient location to outlying areas including the Lakes and

Our staff is in the water year round testing, studying and enjoying the conditions of our local Maine surf. Maine has a lot to offer surfers. Our experience is free to you as you browse a wide selection of handcrafted beautiful boards that will take your surfing to the next level. Whether you’re a seasoned vet or a first-time rider, we have the boards and experience to make you progress as a surfer, leaving you stoked, knowing you got the best out of your surfing experience. The surfs heating up in Portland as more and more Mainers become in tune with the paradise around them and begin to follow their natural instinct to the sea in a bold, seemingly new perspective that actually brings us back centuries. To me there’s nothing better then feeling physically rewarded while enjoying every minute of the exercise and gaining natural skills in the process. No matter what your age, everyone leaves the water with a smile. We’ve teamed up with Greener Postures, one of the top yoga studios in Portland and Falmouth. Together, we provide paddleboard yoga classes taught by professional instructors, which have turned out to be a great combination. Everyone who tries it seems to get a smile stuck on their face that won’t go away. Great for beginners or someone looking to spice up a sport they already love. Instructors give the class time to get familiarized with the boards and everyone has a great time—I know because they tell me. With a wide surfing community, there’s never been a better time to dust off that old dream or polish a new one and see if she floats. Visitors find it difficult to imagine that among the rolling hills and rambling brooks at the end of Desert Road, there is a desert. Once you take your first step through the gift shop’s front door, however, your doubts will vanish as you enter the vast and sandy Desert of Maine. In 1797, the Tuttle family moved to the 300-acre farm that once covered the Desert of Maine where they successfully raised crops of potatoes and hay for several years. Failure to rotate crops thereafter, combined with massive land—clearing and overgrazing, resulted in severe soil erosion that exposed this hidden desert. hroughout the State of Maine there are more than 200 privately-owned campgrounds in addition to a number of State Parks that offer camping facilities. Many privately-owned campgrounds are included in this issue of Activities Guide. A camping stay offers the opportunity for a memorable vacation experience, whether simply camping as a vacation or camping as a means to be near an activity you are planning to enjoy. Diversity is the word to best describe the choices of Maine’s many campgrounds; you’ll discover a tremendous variety in the size, location and type of campgrounds located throughout the state. These range from very small properties where the camping experience is the focus to large resorts that offer every imaginable amenity. Even if you have never camped before, or do not have camping equipment, you’ll find quite a number of places that offer onsite rentals and cabin rentals. Lewiston AUBURN Hot Air Ballooning in Maine By Marissa Gianino Taking part in Lewiston/Auburn’s Annual Great Falls Balloon Festival was truly a chance of a lifetime. From lift-off to landing, hot air ballooning was one of the most exciting and scenic outdoor Maine activities! From 2,000 feet up, I experienced both a breathtaking aerial view and an even more amazing sight around me. The surrounding sky was filled with several other hot air balloons of different colors, patterns and sizes. The entire experience exceeded any expectations I held of hot air ballooning. Watching the pilot and grounds crew set up for the launch was an interesting and informative part of the flight. Since the wind chooses where you land, the crew follows the balloon from their vehicles so they can be there to help land and deflate the balloon. I was intrigued by the whole process from start to finish. A celebratory champagne toast with the pilot, crew 30

he Rangeley Lakes Region is one of Maine’s true wilderness zones, located in the secluded western mountains of Maine, near the New Hampshire border. It is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Skiing, hiking, hunting and kayaking are just a few activities to try in Rangeley, but fly-fishing is one of the most popular. The near perfect regulations imposed by the State on some bodies of water, such as fly-fishing only, barbless hooks only and catch and release only, have proven successful. The brook trout are not the only cold water species available here. Landlocked salmon stocked in the late 19th century, have a solid population as well. Fabled waters such as Rapid River, Kennebago River, Cupsuptic River, Upper Dam, Rangeley Lake and Quimby Pond offer world class fly-fishing. These waters are all easily accessed from Rangeley. There is an abundance of fly-fishing lore that is associated with the Rangeley region. Several traditional streamers like Carrie Stevens’ Grey Ghost and Herb Welch’s Black Ghost were developed here. Louise Dickinson Rich wrote several books while living along the Rapid River. Her most famous, We Took to the Woods, was written at Lower Dam, a once working log drive dam, now torn down and presently memorialized. It is some of the best brook trout-holding water on the river. The fishing season runs from April 1st to September 30th, with prime time being May-June and September. The summer offers plenty of opportunities for anglers willing to get out and explore. From small ponds to big lakes, small streams to large tail-waters and high mountain ponds , Rangeley has something for every flyfisher. Kash J. 36 miles of National Scenic Byway in the Western Mountains of Maine Route 4 and 17 in the Rangeley Lakes Region offers 36 miles of National Scenic Byway – 1 of 3 in the State of Maine and only 150 such designated routes in the entire United States. The Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway offers not only scenic views and vistas, but an abundance of recreational opportunities as well. Heading north on Route 4 just after the start of the National Scenic Byway in Madrid, is the great opportunity to explore Smalls Falls. A 126-foot waterfall with several tiers offers thrills for the most adventuresome to the youngest members of the family. The main falls is easily viewed from the picnic area, but the walk across the bridge is where the real fun begins. You’ll find a trail alongside the main falls that will bring you up the tier and offers opportunities to get into the pools of each tier. Don’t miss finding the path that will lead you across the forested area to the other branch of the river and additional opportunities to slip, slide and splash in the Smalls Falls stream.

The MAINE High Peaks Scenic Byway

he communities along the Maine High Peaks Scenic Byway of Kingfield, Carrabassett Valley and Stratton-Eustis are home to many shops and restaurants, outdoor adventure service specialists and art galleries, with many more natural assets to explore in the Unorganized Townships along the Byway to the Canadian Border as well. The southern Gateway is just below the Village of Kingfield, which is the home of the Stanley Museum and the Ski Museum of Maine. Regional information is available at the High Peaks Information Center, continuing north along the Carrabassett River to Carrabassett Valley adjacent to the airport with Bigelow Range as the backdrop. Maps of the many hiking trails and 200 plus miles of ATV trails throughout the region are amongst information available at the V.C. North along the S-curves of the Carrabassett River, the hugely popular Narrow Gauge pathway for non-motorized activities can be seen across the river. The Sugarloaf Outdoor Center has a mountain bike shop to service needs for riders of all ages and abilities who take advantage of the more than 50 miles of trails, from little kids’ beginner terrain, to vertical boulder challenges for the experts.
Additionally, disc golf is a new and growing activity for the summer of 2013 at the Outdoor Center. Travel up the Sugarloaf Access Road, for golf at Maine’s # 1 Rated Course for over twenty years, go for a zip-line ride on the mountain, or try the summer’s new adventure, Segway riding from the Base Village. Returning to the northern journey on the Maine High Peaks Scenic Byway, a new kiosk with comprehensive trail maps of the area’s varied hiking options in north and south regions is located in the parking lot at the crossing of the Appalachian Trail in Wyman. There is only one place where the Appalachian Trail meets the Northern Forest Canoe Trail: the Village of Stratton. Traveling north over the South Branch of the Dead River, Flagstaff Lake and the Bigelow Range come into view; have the camera ready! Continuing north to the Village of Eustis and following the North Branch of the Dead River, the route parallels Col. Benedict Arnold’s trip north to Quebec in 1775. Stop at one of the scenic turnouts, including the northern Byway Gateway with breathtaking views of the Chain of Ponds. The final few miles finish in Coburn Gore, the north end of the Maine High Peaks Scenic Byway. The Moose River Bow Trip Cry of the Loon The Bow Trip, outside of Jackman, Maine, is one of the most well-known, multi-day paddle trips in the state of Maine, or for that matter in the Northeast. Traveled by many individuals each year, it affords the paddler a place to experience the quiet beauty of the woods in northwestern Maine. For many paddlers, the Bow trip begins and ends in the same place, on Attean Pond just west of Jackman. There is a boat landing down the Attean Rd. where a section of the Moose River between Attean and Big Wood Ponds can be reached. For others, including most outfitters, the trip starts further north and to the west on Holeb Pond to avoid a mile-long portage between Attean and Holeb Ponds. Holeb Pond is reached by an hour-long drive on well-used wood roads. he Androscoggin, Kennebec and Penobscot Rivers define the cities of central Maine. The twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn are located along the Androscoggin, while Waterville is set on the west bank of the Kennebec River and Bangor is on the Penobscot.

wan Island is a state-owned wildlife management area with abundant wildlife including migrating waterfowl, wild turkeys, white-tailed deer and bald eagles. It is also the only management area where camping is allowed and programs are provided for visitors. It is legally known as Perkins Township and is situated between the towns of Richmond and Dresden. This area is often confused with Swan’s Island, which is located in the Atlantic Ocean, five miles southwest of Mount Desert
Island (Acadia National Park) and is accessible by auto ferry at Bass Harbor. At Swan Island, Adirondack shelters are available to campers. Alternatively, Cobbossee Lake is a great fishery for many freshwater species. et out on the disc golf course this summer--there are so many in Maine to choose from! Many of the courses have leagues and tournaments throughout the summer and would love to have you join the fun. Woodland Valley Disc Golf in Limerick, is presently constructing their 3rd and most challenging course yet, and would love to have you stop by for a round. In addition to Enman Field, Dragon Disc Golf opened Dragan Field in Auburn in 2000, and has had a hand in helping to design a number of other courses around the state as well. In 2013, Dragon Disc Golf will open its latest design, a 27-hole course on the Topsham Fairgrounds in Topsham. One of the ways in which Dragon Disc Golf is furthering the growth of the sport is by offering instruction to new players, as well as offering tournaments that range from beginner-oriented instructional events to large Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) events, which draw skilled players from all over the northeastern US.u

nown as the “prettiest village in Maine,” Wiscasset was settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor, Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. Visitors to Wiscasset can stroll the pleasant brick sidewalks and find many antique shops, art galleries, fine stores and restaurants. Other attractions include handsome sea captains’ homes, the Powder House (1812), the Lincoln County Courthouse (1824), Castle Tucker (1807), the old Lincoln County Jail (1809), and the Customs House (1870). or more than half a century, the Hanscoms have been harvesting wild blueberries from their barrens. In mid-August, both locals and visitors alike, flock to Hanscom Ridge Road, Marshfield, to treat themselves to a great downeast summer tradition. In addition to their summer blueberry treats, they pioneered the development of balsam fir holiday products in downeast Maine. Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, centerpieces and other specialty holiday creations are among the natural Maine products that the Hanscoms have shipped to brighten the holiday seasons of thousands of families across America. Early November sees the beginning of the process of harvesting the finest tip ends of the balsam fir branches. The freezing nights in downeast Maine at this time of year are the perfect ingredient to slow down sap flow, allowing the needles to form a strong bond with the branches. Upon leaving the cemetery you can start your drive south on Route ust off the beaten path at the foot of the University of Maine at 92 and two (2) miles down the road you will cross into the town of Machias College Hill where Routes 1 and 92 intersect an amazing Machiasport. 11 mile trek steeped in history, culture and exciting natural wonders awaits the adventurous. At the 3.7mile point of your journey you will find on your right Liberty Hall. It was built in 1873 in a bold Italianate architectural style at a cost Route 92 in Machias is Elm Street. The first stop on the trail is at “Bad of $ 1000.00. Its architect was Andrew Gilson of Machias. The building Little Falls”, located just as one turns onto Route 92. Machias is served as the Machiasport town hall until 2000 and in addition to its derived from the Native American word Mechises which means purely civic functions served as a community center for theater bad little falls or a bad run of water. “Bad Little Falls Park” offers a perfect setting for a picnic and has ample parking for checking out this continued on page 94 natural wonder. After savoring the beauty of the falls and the splendid view the park provides, one can walk up Elm Street (Route 92) a little Machias Motor Inn less than .1 of a mile to Avery Street. The building is Passamaquoddy people have lived in the region for as many as 12,000 listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Over the past several years. These picture rocks tell the rich history and culture of the years this Victorian landmark has undergone a major restoration. Passamaquoddy Tribe. Diagonally across the street from Liberty Hall is the historic Gates House which was built c.1807. The home was purchased by Nathan Gates and his family occupied it for nearly 120 years. Since 1966, it has served as a museum and headquarters for the Machiasport Historical Society. In 1975, it was entered on the National Register of Historic Places. During the summer the museum with its wonderful maritime exhibits is open to the public. Approximately .2 of a mile south on Route 92 from Liberty Hall and the Gates House on a steep bluff overlooking Machias Bay is the historic Machiasport Congregational Church. This church was built just two years after incorporation of the town in 1828. The church possesses one of the most picturesque settings of any church in New England. Fort O’Brien State Park is a must stop on the Down East Heritage Trail. It is just off Route 92 about .2 of a mile south of the Congregational Church. Here you will find a great spot to hike and picnic as well as enjoy a spectacular view of Machias Bay where the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was successfully fought by a small band of American patriots.
Nine (9) miles south on your adventure, you will see to your left Pettegrow Point Road, as you turn onto Pettegrow Point Road you will see an old c.1890 cape and barn. The completely finished off cow barn is the home of the Blue Lobster Gallery a fine art gallery. Proceeding down Pettegrow Point Road approximately .8 of a mile you will come to the Bucks Harbor Public Pier. Here you will have an opportunity to see the Bucks Harbor fleet. Now its time to go back up Pettegrow Point Road .8 of a mile to the intersection of Route 92 (Port Road) and take a left onto Route 92. You are again heading south and just short of a mile on your left you will find Jasper Beach. Wave polished pebbles of jasper and rhyolite give it a distinctive color. There is only one other jasper beach in the world and it is in Japan. Two (2) miles south of Jasper Beach Park on Route 92 is the village of Starboard. Here you will see a fully equipped boat yard, a one-room school that served the community from 1804 to 1938 and a beautiful beach. At low tide you can walk on a sandbar out to the “Point of Maine”.
South on Route 92 approximately one mile, you will find on your left Clark Point Road (also known as Birch Point). The past is alive and well in Eastport In 1818, when America was a young nation led by its 5th President, James Monroe, Samuel B. Wadsworth, a Portland native and the son of Revolutionary War General Peleg Wadsworth, saw an opportunity to launch a ship chandler business in the busy port city of Eastport. n January 22, 1964, The Roosevelt International Park was established by an agreement signed by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. On August 20, 1964, the first ladies of the two countries opened the only international park in the world as a unique memorial to the close relationship between the people of the two nations. Both governments wished to honor the role that Franklin Delano Roosevelt had played in their mutual histories, as well as the special relationship that FDR had with his beloved island. While the summer home of the late president remains the centerpiece of the park, beautiful gardens and 2,800 acres of natural beauty complete with scenic vistas, hiking and driving trails provide additional visitor experiences. Another popular event on a first come, first served basis is Tea with Eleanor. There are two seating daily at 11am (ADT)/10am (EDT) and at 3pm (ADT)/2pm(EDT). Back by popular demand are complimentary walking tours of the estate with on-site presentations of seashore and bog ecology by staff, weather permitting. The Roosevelt cottage opens on the Saturday following Victoria Day (Sat. prior to Memorial Day) through Canadian Thanksgiving (U.S. Columbus Day) 10am -6pm(ADT). The park’s visitor center remains open through October 31st to accommodate fall visitors. s early as the 1500s, when David Ingram sailed up the Penobscot River, explorers believed the region was extraordinary. Some thought that the area was possibly Norumbega–the lost City of Gold.
