The potential to stimulate different ways of thinking and new ways of seeing is at the heart of what excites Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. The Festival is about involving people and multiplying creative possibilities, the inspiration behind X, BFMAF’s theme in 2016. The 24th letter in the Latin alphabet, X is at once loaded with meaning whilst vacant for possibility. It is a marker for place but also an independent and indefinable variable. Simultaneously a marker for censorship or exclusion, X also represents film’s potential to express complex subjects in open and ambitious ways.
X for your vote, X for a kiss, X for the unknown, X marks this spot. While offering multiple possibilities for exploration, X also promises a tight focus around key issues of our time, embracing hidden histories and zones of exclusion. An unknown quantity in risk, experiment and innovation, this exploration of X asks us difficult questions of ourselves and is an invitation to where that process might take us. A rollicking, picaresque tale of classic Hollywood gender-bending, based on the novel by Whisky Galore! author Compton Mackenzie.

A meditation on the milieu of elevated threat addressing national identity, gun culture, wilderness, consumption, patriotism and the possibility of personal transcendence. This film is concerned with the sudden, simple, thorough ways that events can separate us from the system of things, and place us in a kind of limbo. Like when we fall. Or cross a border. Or get shot. Or saved. The film forces together culturally acceptable icons of heroic national tradition with the suggestion of unacceptable historical consequences, so that seemingly benign locations become zones of moral angst.

Trevelyan’s first film, Lambing, was made whilst still a student at the Royal College of Art. The study of isolated Yorkshire sheep farmer Dick Freeman announced his uniquely poetic style of filmmaking. Big Ware, made for the BBC’s Omnibus, shows the last traditional country potter, George Curtis, at work.

The only film by famed convict-author Jean Genet, Un chant d’amour depicts the explicitly sexual relationship between two prisoners housed in adjoining cells. Its rumoured cinematographer, Jean Cocteau, made his directorial debut with the still-influential Le sang d’un poète, which became the first part of his Orphic Trilogy.

On 14 September 2012 at 2:56pm, the cruise liner Adventure of the Seas reports to the Spanish Maritime Rescue Centre the sighting of a dinghy adrift with 13 persons on board. From a YouTube clip biographical scenes evolve a choreography reflecting the past, present and future of the voyagers on the Mediterranean.

In 1969, Akbar Padamsee, a pioneer of modern Indian painting, made one of India’s only experimental films: Events in a Cloud Chamber. The 16mm print is now lost. Over 40 years later, filmmaker Ashim Ahluwalia worked with Padamsee, now 89 years old, to remake the film.
Beginning by circumventing the trap of Situationist mythology, the work revisits a forgotten part of its history: the lyrics to a protest song composed by Congolese Situationist Joseph M’Belolo Ya M’Piku in May 1968. Working with M’Belolo and young musicians in Kinshasa, Meessen produces a new rendition of the song.

The eponymous water-musiclight attraction has been in operation since the early 1980s. Installed in a childsized theatre, it synchronises a 1920s mechanical organ with a Festival of Britain water tray. Exhausted and hysterical, the film’s patriotic climax is rendered at once pathetic, spectacular and slippery.

Filmed in two continuous 33-minute takes, My Hustler was a turning point in Warhol’s filmography. One of the first films made in collaboration with Paul Morrissey, it was also one of Warhol’s first films with sound. Filmed over a weekend on Fire Island where hustlers and johns competed for erotic attention.

The most expensive production in Polish cinema, Andrzej Żuławski’s hallucinogenic sci-fi epic was nearly buried by the Communist regime, but surfaced after nearly a decade to wide acclaim. It screens here in a glorious new digital restoration, approved by Żuławski shortly before his death in February.

An Indigenous Australian man plays the ‘good native’ until a chance encounter forces him to decide whether to live his life with diplomacy or authenticity. A short story dense with themes of oppression, dehumanisation, resistance and the determination of indigenous people to fight for literal and cultural survival.

Written and directed by women and featuring an all-female cast, Mädchen in Uniform was referred to by eminent queer film scholar B Ruby Rich as ‘the first truly radical lesbian film’. Made in Weimar Germany, it was (unsurprisingly) banned by the Nazis, who unsuccessfully attempted to destroy the film outright.

17-year-old Xiaobin arrives in Buenos Aires unable to speak a word of Spanish. Hiding from her parents, she starts saving money and signs up at a language school. Whatever she learns in Spanish class, she rehearses in real life. The better her Spanish gets, the more Xiaobin intervenes in the writing of the film. El futuro perfecto comes straight to Berwick from Locarno Film Festival where it won the Prize for Best First Feature. Prior to the screening will be the announcement of the 2016 Berwick New Cinema Award.

Through its three formal studies of pre-verbal babies, Going to the Mountain considers how the pre-verbal child might represent a site of embodied knowledge. Using slow-motion camera, mirrored surfaces and rhythmic editing, it attempts to depict the complexities of their gesture, rhythm and movement.

Hauntings, selftransformation, creating community and finding voice are some of Lucy Parker’s concerns in Persuasion. Researched and shot in Berwick, the film has a parable like quality and includes interviews with a number of activists alongside dramatised acts of persuasion to consider an endless preoccupation with strategies for change. A large textile installation by Hooper will form an ‘open set’ for a new performance work exploring the story of Inanna, Sumerian goddess of love, fertility and war. When Inanna descends to the underworld to visit her sister Ereshkigal, she arrives ceremonially dressed and laden with her powers. Asifa Lahore, Britain’s first out Muslim drag artist, plays the role of Inanna.

Inspired by the collateral, incompatible and sudden world described in Louis MacNiece’s 1935 poem Snow, this event combines performance, sound, moving image, internet video and archival material. The certifications used in the programme are a mixture of BBFC classifications and recommended age ratings suggested by the Festival, and are certified 12A unless otherwise noted.
BFMAF recommend The Curfew (46A Bridge Street, Berwick) for light refreshments to eat in or take away, beer from Bear Claw and great Berwick hospitality. Open 12noon-9pm Wednesday & Thursday, 12noon - 10pm Friday, Saturday & Sunday. For Festival pass holders, The Curfew are offering a snack (sandwich or pork pie) and a drink for £4. Food available until it’s gone.
Berwick New Cinema Seminar Exploring BFMAF 2016 through discussion, reflection and contextualisation of the featured films and exhibitions, Ed Webb-Ingall will lead a seminar programme featuring some of the Festival’s main guests. Places on the seminar are free and available on a first come first served basis to Full Festival Pass holders (£30/£24 concession) through a simple online signup form. Contact programme@berwickfilm-artsfest.com for further details. Though it’s possible to attend each individual seminar separately, BFMAF encourages attendees to be present for all three sessions.

Young Filmmakers’ Competition & Showcase Sunday 25 Sept, 12:45 @ The Maltings Theatre & Cinema The Young Filmmakers’ Competition is back for its 9th year! BFMAF encourages and supports budding young filmmakers in the region through two separate competition streams:The Young Filmmakers’ Award (14 years and under) and The Chris Anderson Award (15-19 years old). The Chris Anderson Award is supported by Chrissie Anderson and Paul W.S. Anderson, director of Resident Evil and Alien vs. Predator. The showcase will also feature the premiere of BFMAF and Berwick Youth Project’s Killer Party!
