Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival 2016 Guide

PROGRAMME GUIDE FREE

The potential to stimulate different ways of thinking and new ways of seeing is at the heart of what excites Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival. The Festival is about involving people and multiplying creative possibilities, the inspiration behind X, BFMAF’s theme in 2016. The 24th letter in the Latin alphabet, X is at once loaded with meaning whilst vacant for possibility. It is a marker for place but also an independent and indefinable variable. Simultaneously a marker for censorship or exclusion, X also represents film’s potential to express complex subjects in open and ambitious ways.

X for your vote, X for a kiss, X for the unknown, X marks this spot. While offering multiple possibilities for exploration, X also promises a tight focus around key issues of our time, embracing hidden histories and zones of exclusion. An unknown quantity in risk, experiment and innovation, this exploration of X asks us difficult questions of ourselves and is an invitation to where that process might take us. The 12th Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival features the following programme strands: An Early Clue to the New Direction: Queer Cinema Before Stonewall curated by Thomas Beard

Berwick New Cinema Features, Competition & Seminar

Essential Cinema featuring Philip Trevelyan, Luke Fowler and Andrzej Żuławski Artists in Profile: Claire Hooper and Deborah Stratman

In one of the earliest films by gay director George Cukor, Sylvia Scarlett (Katharine Hepburn) adopts the identity of a boy to help keep the law off the trail of her ne’er-do-well father. En route, they encounter a ‘gentleman adventurer’ (Cary Grant at his most louche) and together the trio start grifting. A rollicking, picaresque tale of classic Hollywood gender-bending, based on the novel by Whisky Galore! author Compton Mackenzie.

O’er the Land

B

Deborah Stratman

AP

1pm @ The Maltings Theatre & Cinema

A meditation on the milieu of elevated threat addressing national identity, gun culture, wilderness, consumption, patriotism and the possibility of personal transcendence. This film is concerned with the sudden, simple, thorough ways that events can separate us from the system of things, and place us in a kind of limbo. Like when we fall. Or cross a border. Or get shot. Or saved. The film forces together culturally acceptable icons of heroic national tradition with the suggestion of unacceptable historical consequences, so that seemingly benign locations become zones of moral angst.

A Boy Needs a Friend Steve Reinke

15

Mười một người đàn ông (Eleven Men)

Canada, USA | 2015 | 22

Trinh Thi Nguyen

Steve Reinke turns to the subjects of friendship and intimacy, investigating the notion of queer Nietzschean friendship and setting forth theories about the identity of Stephen King and Joyce Carol Oates, needlepoint doodles, the upsides of dual citizenship, and the ability of corpses to have sex.

Vietnam | 2016 | 29

Eleven Men is composed of scenes from a range of Vietnamese classic narrative films featuring the same central actress, Nhu Quynh, and produced by the stateowned Vietnam Feature Film Studio. The film’s text was adapted from a short story by Franz Kafka which begins with a father’s declaration: ‘I have eleven sons’.

Zikrayat Li Moufatish Khass (Memories for a Private Eye) Rania Stephan

Lebanon, UAE | 2015 | 32

Evoking the language of film noir, the film foregrounds a fictional detective who helps unfold deep and traumatic memories. Weaving together images from different sources while investigating the past, Memories for a Private Eye is the first chapter in a trilogy which investigates the filmmaker’s personal archive.

A meditation on prison’s disappearance in the era of mass incarceration. Female prisoners fight mountainside wildfires; a warehouse is filled with goods designed to meet arcane state regulations; a coal town bets its future on prison jobs. A series of ordinary places where prisons do work and affect lives.

UK | 1971 + 2008 | 65 + 30 7pm @ The Maltings Theatre & Cinema

Celebrating the lifestyle and philosophies of the Page family, Philip Trevelyan’s document of their beguilingly strange existence - living offgrid and riding steam engines - screens with Luke Fowler’s Bogman Palmjaguar, about a man who becomes distrustful of people and withdraws into nature.

1pm @ The Maltings Theatre & Cinema

Now celebrating its centenary, Vingarne was the first film to deal explicitly with a gay relationship - that between an older sculptor and his young protégé. Once thought lost, the central portion of the film (minus a framing prologue and epilogue) was discovered in 1987, leading to the reconstruction shown here.

Lambing + Big Ware

Philip Trevelyan

UK | 1964 + 1971 | 16mm 20 + 40 1pm @ Henry Travers Studio

Trevelyan’s first film, Lambing, was made whilst still a student at the Royal College of Art. The study of isolated Yorkshire sheep farmer Dick Freeman announced his uniquely poetic style of filmmaking. Big Ware, made for the BBC’s Omnibus, shows the last traditional country potter, George Curtis, at work.

Q 18

Jean Genet + Jean Cocteau France | 1950 + 1931 | 26 + 50 3pm @ The Maltings Theatre & Cinema

The only film by famed convict-author Jean Genet, Un chant d’amour depicts the explicitly sexual relationship between two prisoners housed in adjoining cells. Its rumoured cinematographer, Jean Cocteau, made his directorial debut with the still-influential Le sang d’un poète, which became the first part of his Orphic Trilogy.

Events in a Cloud Chamber Ashim Ahluwalia India | 2016 | 23

In 1969, Akbar Padamsee, a pioneer of modern Indian painting, made one of India’s only experimental films: Events in a Cloud Chamber. The 16mm print is now lost. Over 40 years later, filmmaker Ashim Ahluwalia worked with Padamsee, now 89 years old, to remake the film.

Beginning by circumventing the trap of Situationist mythology, the work revisits a forgotten part of its history: the lyrics to a protest song composed by Congolese Situationist Joseph M’Belolo Ya M’Piku in May 1968. Working with M’Belolo and young musicians in Kinshasa, Meessen produces a new rendition of the song.

The Watershow Extravaganza Sophie Michael

UK | 2016 | 16mm | 11

The eponymous water-musiclight attraction has been in operation since the early 1980s. Installed in a childsized theatre, it synchronises a 1920s mechanical organ with a Festival of Britain water tray. Exhausted and hysterical, the film’s patriotic climax is rendered at once pathetic, spectacular and slippery.

The most expensive production in Polish cinema, Andrzej Żuławski’s hallucinogenic sci-fi epic was nearly buried by the Communist regime, but surfaced after nearly a decade to wide acclaim. To keep a promise she made to her dying mother, a young woman goes off in search of her father. Along the way, she learns that he is dead, but this doesn’t change her plans. Carried by the rhythm of the maloya, a ritual chant from Reunion Island, Cilaos explores the murky ties that bind the dead and the living.

Colossal Cave Graeme Arnfield UK | 2016 | 10

An excavated love letter from the prehistory of the Internet. Retracing the production of a pioneering video game, it finds in its debris the blueprints of our contemporary digital network and the emotional remapping of the world.

Dear Hester (Reversed) explores queer intergenerational relationships negotiated through historical materials. Using a video document of British performance artist Hester Reeve reversed and re-edited to include a dialogue with the artist, Staff interjects on care and performance, image and prosthesis.

If It Was

Laure Prouvost UK | 2015 | 9

A musing on Munich’s Haus der Kunst and what it might become. As image and text continually interrupt each other, a voiceover speculates about what HdK would be like if it was her museum. What if the angles of the building were all a bit softer? What if one could take the roof off and have palm trees inside?

Some Shapes Without Edges Molly Palmer

UK | 2016 | 12

An episodic video sequence about the mystery, complexity and absurdity of being human. The stories are sentimental and comical, silly and serious. Music, dance and gesture take over when words won’t work. The videos are set in a world where things fit together as they do in dreams and in our heads.

C Spencer Yeh USA | 2015 | 55 @ Barrels Ale House

A ‘concert film’ that collects footage of approximately forty bands, 2002 acts as a survey, tribute and foreshadowing of the contemporary American musical underground, capturing not only the artists, but the audiences, spaces and networks that remain incredibly formative and influential over a decade later.

The Watershow Extravaganza Sophie Michael

Exhausted and hysterical, the film’s patriotic climax is rendered at once pathetic, spectacular and slippery.
