Nathan and the Volcano A parent-guided story for children who have experienced trauma from the La Soufrière volcano in St.Vincent

This book was produced by The Center of Educational Neuroscience Barbados.

Hi, my name is Nathan. I am 7 years old and I want to tell you what happened to me when the volcano La Soufrière erupted, on my island St.Vincent.

We had to evacuate our home. I had to leave behind my toys, clothes and books. Mummy and Daddy said we can only pack the most important items.

I still have my favourite toy. Some nice people donated cool clothes.

Since the volcano eruptions... I have good days and bad days. I want to go back to my normal life. I wonder when things will be normal again. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel sad.

Mummy is always asking me if I am okay. One day mummy asked, "can I talk to you about how things have changed since we left our home?"

Mummy said she is worried about me. She said we have to look out for each other so we can feel safe and get back to doing fun things again.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS

Mummy said the food they are serving in the shelter is delicious! However, we also have to feed our mind with good thoughts.

After the eruption, we can speak to a counsellor together who can help us feel normal again.

Counsellors help people to have healthier minds. They talk to children like me who have been through scary events and, have bad memories and negative thoughts.

I think counselling would be a great idea for me! I always feel better after I talk about how I am feeling.

I AM COOL

I AM THE FASTEST IN MY CLASS

Mummy said there are a few things I can do to make myself feel better.

I am really good at saying positive things about myself in my head.

Mummy said that I can tell myself: I am safe now I am strong in body and mind I love the people who are helping me New chapters in a book are just as exciting as new chapters in my life!

I AM SAFE NOW

Thanks for reading my story!
