La crème de la crème The 80-bedroom, 150-year old Chester Grosvenor is a revered institution in this historic English city – and continues to go from strength to strength in partnership with Bespoke Hotels.

Dining is finer Dining is finer when it’s bespoke when it’s bespoke

On the back of strong occupancy figures, the hotel has recently completed a £350,000 refurbishment on its all-day dining restaurant, La Brasserie, creating an exclusive new Champagne and Cocktail Bar, while retaining its Michelin Star for a 28th consecutive year.

C’EST INCROYABLE Amongst The Chester Grosvenor’s awards are Condé Nast Readers’ Choice, Decanter Restaurant of the Year, Pride of Britain Hotel of the Year and, most impressive of all, Simon Radley at The Chester Grosvenor is one of only four English restaurants to have held one or more Michelin stars for a period of 28 consecutive years. BESPOKE ACCESS AWARDS

BESPOKE ACCESS AWARDS

improving hotel experiences for all The Bespoke Access Awards was created in 2016 to drive better design and improve hotel experiences for disabled and ablebodied guests alike. Administered by the Royal Institute of British Architects, with support from the Design Council and HM Government Department of Work and Pensions, disability groups, the media, hospitality organisations and sponsors, 2017/18 saw the second annual design competition, with entries targeting a wide range of disabilities, while striving to improve the experience of all guests. “The Bespoke Access Awards began with a series of questions,” says Bespoke Hotels executive chairman Robin Sheppard, the driving force behind the awards, “but primarily, what can we do to improve hotel experiences for everyone and upgrade from empathy to joy? I’d like to see a situation,” says Sheppard, “where people see being given a disabled room as an upgrade.”

“The needs of disabled people should be celebrated by designers rather than seen as merely satisfying building regulations,” says architect and supporter of the Awards, Lord Rogers of Riverside. “We need to imagine what a more joyful experience for disabled people could look like and articulate it in better architecture, product design and service design.”

ACCESS PROGRESS Alongside The Chester Grosvenor, which has made bedrooms, bathrooms and disabled-access rooms virtually seamless, Dorking White Horse, re-launched in late 2017 by Bespoke Hotels, has taken care to ensure its disabled-access rooms are as stylish and comfortable as any other part of the property, achieving praise from across the design community in the process.

“As I have travelled the world, I’ve had experience of how poor design standards in some hotels can affect how you feel – not only about staying but also about the whole experience,” says Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, DL, the Olympian, parliamentarian and TV presenter. “The Bespoke Access Awards are a chance to let the imagination run free and to conceive how a more inclusive design experience can help not just disabled people but every guest.” 12

Tulloch Castle dates from the 12th century, when the Bains and later the Clan Davidson laid claim to its lands. The castle's fortunes have changed many times over the centuries, but now, it is a magnificent hotel with 20 charming, characterful bedrooms and retains many period features including the 250-year old panelled Great Hall, restored fireplaces and ceilings. The Hotel sits above the ancient town of Dingwall overlooking the Cromarty Firth and the Black Isle.

BeInns

THE WHITE HORSE, SURREY

Bespoke pubs, coaching inns and small hotels Everyone loves a cosy old English coaching inn, conjuring up images of real ale, hearty cooking and blazing log-fires preceded by a muddy stomp through the countryside, a terrier lapping from a bowl of water by the hearth, and a couple of old devils telling stories at the bar. Here are four of our best BeInns – located in Gloucestershire, Surrey, Devon, and Oxfordshire – some rustic, some just a little bit chic, but all of them as welcoming as a steak pie on a cold winter’s day.

The White Horse Hotel in Dorking has been a coaching inn of character since the 18th Century and is said to be the place where Charles Dickens wrote the Pickwick Papers. Relaunched following substantial investment in late 2017, it has undergone a complete refurbishment, while retaining original features and period details to ensure 21st century travellers have a sense of the history and tradition around them.

THE BULL INN, OXFORDSHIRE The Bull Inn is a charming 16th century homefrom-home, traditional inn at Charlbury. It has eight bedrooms, delicious gastro pub food, roaring fires, old beams and stone floors. It’s only 18 miles from Oxford in a classic Cotswold town that is renowned for walking, cycling, summer festivals and antique shops. Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Chipping Norton and Burford are all close by.

HUNTER'S INN, EXMOOR Purchased by the National Trust in 2018, Hunter's Inn lies at the heart of 2,000 acres of land that the Trust already cares for in North Devon. The property features 10 en-suite bedrooms, alongside a bar and restaurant, as well as a twobedroom self-catering apartment. Originally a thatched cottage, the building was reconstructed in the “Swiss Style” at the height of the Victorian Era, it is set within four acres of landscaped gardens, which form an idyllic backdrop for weddings and family events.

THE NOEL ARMS, GLOUCESTERSHIRE Steeped in history and standing as one of the oldest Cotswold Inns, The Noel Arms is even said to have played host to Charles II during the English Civil War. Things are a touch more relaxed these days, with an outstanding destination restaurant and bar, an authentic log fire and newly-refurbished coffee shop, as well as 28 comfortable en-suite rooms.

The ‘coaching inn’ was traditionally a wayside establishment that provided coach travellers with bed and refreshment and ‘refuelled’ horses. Between the 17th and 19th centuries they were as vital to Britain’s transport infrastructure as the railway station would later become.

And that’s without mentioning the famous curries on offer, lovingly prepared by Head Chef Indunil Sanchi, winner of the Best Pub Curry Chef Award at the Great British Pub Food Awards on three separate occasions! 20
