Hello and welcome to the 2025 issue,

It’s a privilege to join Bespoke Destinations as Associate Editor and to work alongside Rocco and his remarkable team. Together, we see Africa and the Indian Ocean as destinations uniquely suited to the Middle Eastern traveler, offering experiences that combine luxury, adventure, and authenticity.

After more than 14 years as an expat in the Middle East, this publication unites my two homes and two passions—Africa and travel—on a platform that shines a spotlight on Africa’s beauty, diversity, and endless offerings. My journey has taken me across much of the continent (with still so much left on my bucket list), and I’m continuously in awe of Africa’s landscapes, hospitality, cuisine, and cultural richness. Each issue of Bespoke Destinations is an invitation to share that wonder with you.

In this edition, I bring you closer to Rwanda—a country whose warmth, breathtaking landscapes, and conservation efforts have captured my heart. ANGELA YEUNG: REACHING THE HIGHEST POINT IN AFRICA

I’m Angela Yeung, a professional jeweller, entrepreneur and philanthropist. I never dreamt of climbing mountains in my life, but the mountain called me.

2017 was the first time met my biological mother after 30 years of constantly looking for her. Because of my difficult childhood, I felt I could relate to some of the girl’s experiences and connect with them.

I also believe you can only give when you truly have In 2018 and 2019, I was invited to climb Kilimanjaro twice for caring4girls, girls cannot afford sanitary pads and miss school 50 days a year. Raised awareness and funds for the girl child, I believe we can all heal ourselves through connecting with nature and so I wanted to show the children the power of self-healing through education.

There is so much nature can offer, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a thrilling adventure and the highest mountain in Africa. The scenery on Mount Kilimanjaro is breathtakingly diverse, shifting dramatically as you ascend through its various ecological zones. At the base, lush rainforests teem with vibrant flora and fauna, where towering trees and mossdraped vegetation create a dense, tropical canopy. As you climb higher, the landscape transitions into alpine meadows and heath, with striking, jagged volcanic formations. Above the tree line, the barren, moonlike terrain of the high-altitude desert unveils sweeping vistas, with rocky slopes and glaciers forming a stark contrast against the deep blue sky. The summit, Uhuru Peak, offers a surreal, panoramic view, with vast plains stretching far into the distance and the summit’s iconic glaciers shimmering in the harsh sunlight. Throughout the journey, Kilimanjaro’s scenery is a constantly changing tapestry of natural beauty, from tropical warmth to icy grandeur.

Let me share some pointers with you about the climb so that one day, you will reach the highest point in Africa.

TREKKING EXPERIENCE

• Duration: The climb typically takes between 5 to 9 days, depending on the route you choose.

• Difficulty: The climb is not technical, meaning you don’t need mountaineering skills, but it’s still strenuous due to the high altitude and rugged terrain. Expect long days of walking, anywhere from 4 to 8 hours per day.

• Altitude: The altitude can be tough on the body. Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit is 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, so altitude sickness is a concern. Proper acclimatization is key to avoiding it.

MOST POPULAR ROUTE

There are several routes up Kilimanjaro, each offering a different experience:

• Marangu Route (the “Coca-Cola” route) is the easiest and only route with huts for accommodation are the most popular route.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

• Temperature: The temperature varies dramatically depending on the altitude. At the base, it’s warm and tropical (20–30°C), but as you ascend, temperatures drop. At the summit, it can be freezing or below zero, especially at night.

• Rain: The rainy season typically occurs from March to May, so if possible, avoid these months to minimize wet conditions. The dry season is from June to October, and also from December to February.

• Wind and Snow: The summit can be windy, and there may be snow or ice, especially in the early mornings or evenings.

PHYSICAL CHALLENGE

• Fitness: While no technical climbing is involved, you should be in good physical shape to handle the long days of hiking. Regular aerobic and strength training exercises will help.

• Pace: Kilimanjaro is all about “pole, pole” (slowly, slowly). It’s not a race, and your pace should be slow to ensure proper acclimatization and avoid overexertion.

• Summit Day: This is the hardest part of the climb, as you’ll typically start at midnight or 1:00 AM to reach the summit by sunrise. This will involve hiking for 6–8 hours, often in the cold and at a slow, steady pace.

ACCLIMATIZATION

• Altitude Sickness: This is the biggest risk on Kilimanjaro. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. It’s essential to follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle and allow your body time to adjust to the altitude.

• Hydration & Nutrition: Drinking plenty of water and eating high-energy foods will help keep your body in peak condition and improve your chances of summiting.

ACCOMMODATION AND CAMPING

• On most routes, you will camp along the way, but on the Marangu Route, there are huts. Camping means sleeping in tents, and you’ll typically be provided with a camp cook and porters.

• You’ll be sleeping at increasingly high altitudes, so it’s important to bring warm clothing, sleeping bags rated for cold temperatures, and a good thermos for hot drinks.

GUIDES, PORTERS, AND SUPPORT STAFF

• Guides: A certified guide will lead your group, ensuring safety and helping with navigation, route decisions, and information about the mountain.

• Porters: Kilimanjaro is a heavily supported climb. Porters carry the majority of the gear (such as tents, food, and personal items). You’ll likely only carry a small daypack with essentials like water, snacks, and a camera.

• Cook: On most routes, a cook will prepare meals for you. Expect hearty, carb-heavy meals to fuel your energy levels.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

• Altitude Sickness: As mentioned, this is the main concern. Some routes offer better opportunities for acclimatization, so it’s wise to choose one that allows you to ascend gradually.

• Emergency Evacuation: While rare, altitude-related health issues can occur, and evacuation is possible via stretcher or helicopter if needed. Be sure to have adequate travel insurance that covers mountain rescue.

• Vaccinations: Check that you’re up-to-date on routine vaccinations and consider vaccinations for diseases like yellow fever, which may be required depending on where you’re coming from.

SUMMIT: UHURU PEAK

• The Final Push: Summiting is a monumental achievement! The final ascent to Uhuru Peak typically takes place in the early hours of the morning, often under a starry sky, followed by a sunrise over the surrounding plains.

• Celebration: The summit is the highest point on the mountain, and reaching it is a huge accomplishment. However, the descent is long and can be hard on your knees, so pace yourself and rest when needed.

MENTAL PREPARATION

The climb is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Stay positive, patient, and focused, especially on summit day when the going gets tough. Encouragement from your team, along with the beautiful surroundings, can help you push through.

Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro is one of the most rewarding experiences. The sense of achievement, combined with the stunning views and the camaraderie of your team, will make the climb a memory you cherish forever. Expect a physically and mentally challenging yet immensely rewarding experience. Plan ahead, choose the right route and expedition company, take the time to acclimatize, and maintain a positive attitude. Whether you’re summiting for personal achievement, to see the stunning vistas, or for the adventure of a lifetime, climbing Kilimanjaro is an unforgettable journey!

RECOMMENDATION BEFORE THE KILIMANJARO CLIMB FOR ALTITUDE TRAINING:

Cathedral Peak is one of my favourite peaks in Drakensberg Mountain.

The Cathedral Peak hike is one of the most iconic and challenging treks in South Africa’s Drakensberg Mountains, offering stunning views and a rewarding experience for seasoned hikers.

Cathedral Peak, part of the central Drakensberg range, is a prominent, jagged peak that stands at 3,004 meters (9,855 feet) above sea level, and the hike to its summit is known for both its natural beauty and technical difficulty.

The hike typically starts from the Didima Camp, located in

the Cathedral Peak area, and follows a well-established trail that climbs steadily through lush grasslands, rocky terrain, and alpine vegetation. The route is challenging due to its steep ascent, scrambling sections, and the occasional need for basic rock climbing skills, especially near the summit. Hikers will need to navigate rocky outcrops and cliff faces, requiring a good sense of balance and the ability to handle exposed sections, although no technical climbing gear is necessary.

One of the key highlights of the Cathedral Peak hike is the stunning panoramic views as you approach the summit. From the top, hikers are rewarded with a 360-degree vista that includes the jagged peaks of the Drakensberg range, sweeping valleys, and distant mountain ridges, as well as views into Lesotho to the south. The surrounding landscape is incredibly diverse, with grassy slopes, towering cliffs, and intricate rock formations.

While the summit of Cathedral Peak itself is a major draw, hikers often stop to admire other landmarks along the way, such as the “Cathedral” rock formation, which gives the peak its name. The hike typically takes about 8 to 10 hours for experienced hikers, but it can be done as a day hike or over two days if one decides to camp in the area.

The Cathedral Peak region is also home to an array of wildlife, including various bird species, mountain buck, and baboons, as well as an impressive diversity of flora, especially at higher altitudes. The hike is best undertaken during the warmer months (spring and summer) when the weather is more stable, though hikers should always be prepared for sudden changes in weather, including thunderstorms and snow in the colder months.

Overall, the Cathedral Peak hike is a spectacular and rewarding challenge for experienced hikers looking to explore the beauty and ruggedness of the Drakensberg Mountains.

If you want something in the Western Cape of South Africa, I would recommend the Cederberg which offers some of the country’s most unique and stunning hiking trails, known for its rugged terrain, dramatic rock formations, ancient San rock art, and diverse plant and animal life. The Cederberg Mountains are part of the greater Cape Fold Belt, and their distinctive landscapes are marked by sandstone peaks, deep valleys, and striking features such as craggy cliffs, natural arches, and wildflower-filled slopes.

One of the most popular and rewarding hikes in the Cederberg is the Cederberg Traverse. This is a multi-day, 4 to 5-day hike that takes trekkers through the heart of the Cederberg wilderness, covering a distance of approximately 40 to 50 kilometers. The traverse offers hikers the chance to explore the region’s wild beauty, including dramatic rock formations like the Maltese Cross, a natural rock formation that resembles the symbol of the Maltese cross, and Wolfberg Arch, a massive rock arch that’s a favourite spot for photography.

For those looking for shorter hikes, there are a variety of options, such as:

1. The Wolfberg Cracks: This is a popular half-day hike that takes hikers through a labyrinth of narrow rock corridors, crevices, and caves. It’s a relatively easy yet incredibly fun scramble that allows for spectacular views of the surrounding Cederberg peaks. The hike leads to the Wolfberg Arch, one of the most iconic spots in the area, offering panoramic views of the Cederberg mountains and valleys.

2. The Stadsaal Caves and Rock Art: This is a shorter, family-friendly hike that takes visitors to the Stadsaal Caves, where they can view ancient San rock art. The caves themselves are beautiful, and the surrounding area features interesting geological formations. This hike offers a chance to experience the region’s rich cultural history alongside its natural beauty.

3. The Truitjieskraal Rock Art Site: Located in the southern Cederberg, this area has several short walking trails that lead to fascinating rock art sites, some of which are estimated to be over 6,000 years old. The hike itself is relatively easy and provides insight into the cultural and spiritual practices of the indigenous San people.

4. The Pakhuis Pass to Algeria: This shorter hike is great for those looking for a more moderate day trek. The trail passes through a variety of landscapes, from rugged mountain terrain to tranquil forests, and offers incredible views of the surrounding hills.

HIKING TIPS FOR THE CEDERBERG

• Best time to visit: The best time to hike in the Cederberg is during the spring and autumn months (from late September to early May), when the weather is generally mild and comfortable. Summer can get very hot, and winter can be cold with occasional snowfall, especially at higher altitudes.

• Terrain: The terrain can be rocky and uneven, with some sections requiring basic scrambling or climbing. Good hiking boots are recommended.

• Water and supplies: Be prepared to bring sufficient water, as some areas of the Cederberg are remote, and water sources can be scarce along the trails.

• Wildlife: The region is home to a variety of wildlife, including baboons, leopards, and various species of antelope. Birdwatchers will also enjoy the abundance of birdlife, including eagles and kestrels.

Whether you’re looking for an adventurous multi-day trek or a leisurely day hike with a cultural twist, the Cederberg has something for every nature lover and outdoor enthusiast.

NTOMBI COUTURE: FROM AFRICA WITH LOVE…

THANDO MAGUMISE SHARES HER JOURNEY OF BLENDING AFRICAN HERITAGE WITH CONTEMPORARY LUXURY TO REDEFINE BESPOKE FASHION IN THE GLOBAL STYLE CAPITAL.

What inspired you to start Ntombi Couture, and how did your journey in the fashion industry begin?

Ntombi Couture is a brand that was inspired by my love for Africa, the African people and the diversity of the continent itself. Though we design clothing for both men and women, women were at the core of the brand when we started, hence the name Ntombi which means a lady in my language IsiNdebele.

How would you describe the ethos and design philosophy behind Ntombi Couture?

Run by my desire to tell a genuine African story through fabrics, our design process speaks to the ethos of the continent.Africa is made up of a beautiful mix of diverse cultures. With those , come different colours, fabrics, people, and even fabrics. Yet there are so many elements of the different people of Africa that have a lot of elements in common, such as the colourful fabrics, the decadent foods, and the welcoming nature of people. As we design, we think of these elements in our collections and we keep our work clean and classic. Our design philosophy ensures that our offering is timeless.

Why did you choose Dubai as the home for Ntombi Couture, and how has the city influenced your designs?

Dubai is one of the best places in the world not only to start a business but to go global with your business. It is one of the world’s leading destinations in terms of the fashion industry and with it comes leadership that spearheads great

investment in the creative industry. Earlier this year Dubai was ranked first globally in foreign direct investment into the creative economy with AED 11.8 BN invested to boost the creative market.

What does luxury mean to you, and how do you ensure Ntombi Couture stays synonymous with elegance and quality?

Luxury means a seamlessly produced product from start to finish. From the brief, to design, fabric sourcing, production, quality control, product delivery and client support. To me luxury is not only the product but the entire process from concept to after the delivery. You may have a beautifully designed and crafted piece for a client but if they do not have a luxurious experience from the first touch point/ conversation then the luxury experience is lost. To ensure we stay synonymous with elegance and quality we do our best to not compromise any of the mentioned stages of the process. We continue to strive to master our craft, one Ntombi piece at a time.

How do you incorporate elements of African culture into your creations, and why is this important to you?

We usually incorporate elements of African culture into our creations through different elements that speak to the continent. Namely fabrics from the continent, fabrics with

african prints, and fabrics that are rich in colour even if they are solid colours. The landscape of the continent also inspires us, for example the unique sunset of the one of a kind safaris. A lot of our designs are driven by African people at large, many of which are our clients. There are many elements about the continent one can draw inspiration from.

Could you share a memorable project or a significant milestone in your journey with Ntombi Couture?

The most significant milestone for me will always be the launch of our first collection at the Middle East Fashion Week 10 years ago. It was at that moment that the penny dropped that Dubai was the best destination for us to build the brand from.

What challenges have you faced as a designer and entrepreneur in the luxury space, and how have you overcome them?

Some challenges we have faced include learning some elements of running a successful business as you go. This is an expected element that comes with being an entrepreneur however sometimes you make mistakes that may cost you. I’ve overcome such mistakes by staying open to learning and accepting that lessons are there to be learnt. Sometimes that means doing research, reading up on certain subjects that will assist me in making better decisions in the future. We have also been faced with resourcing challenges that have pushed us to outsource the human resource element of the business to ensure that we not only have talented people that we work with but also that they are the best fit for the dynamic with strive for. This has been a major lesson this year.

What is your vision for the future of Ntombi Couture, and what can we expect to see from your brand in the coming years?

The vision is to grow the Ntombi brand to be a brand that connects personally with each person that experiences our pieces. When we design our bespoke pieces, we ask questions that give us insights into the client. It’s important that the client remains at the heart of a brand.

You can expect to see us expand our ready to wear pieces. Although the brand started off with bespoke clothing, we have transitioned to offering both ready to wear and bespoke clothing for men and women. We also plan to continue to collaborate more with other brands on capsule collections.

How has your travel experiences influenced your designs, and are there any particular destinations that have left a lasting impact on your creative vision?

This may be biased however every time I travel to South Africa I return to Dubai buzzing creatively. South Africa has an immensely talented pool of creatives that I respect and the fashion scene in South Africa has its own unique soul that cant be found anywhere else in the world.

THEBE IKALAFENG: A MAN OF JOURNEYS, STORIES AND SOUL

FROM BRANDING VISIONARY TO LIFELONG EXPLORER, HOW THEBE REDEFINES CONNECTION THROUGH TRAVEL.

My first encounter with Thebe Ikalafeng was at an event in Dubai hosted by Brand South Africa. Amidst a room buzzing with energy, it was his larger-than-life personality that immediately drew me in. He radiated warmth and a captivating sense of presence, weaving stories that effortlessly connected people, places, and purpose. In that moment, I knew I was in the presence of someone extraordinary, someone who viewed the world not just through the lens of an explorer, but as a storyteller who understood the soul of every destination.

Over time, I’ve grown to cherish Thebe for his authenticity, his boundless curiosity, and his ability to make you feel like family no matter where in the world you meet him. This sense of connection is something he has carried with him through every chapter of his remarkable journey.

Thebe Ikalafeng is a celebrated author, branding guru, and the visionary Founder of Brand Africa, an initiative that has redefined the narrative of the continent by celebrating its creativity, innovation, and excellence. Through his work, Thebe has inspired Africans to embrace their identity and take pride in the richness of their heritage. His career spans decades of trailblazing success, from leading global branding campaigns to crafting narratives that bridge cultures and transcend borders. Among his notable achievements is his tenure at Nike, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the brand’s presence in Africa, a testament to his expertise in aligning global excellence with local authenticity. His influence extends beyond branding, as he has served on boards and councils dedicated to fostering innovation and progress across the continent.

In his book, The Traveller, Thebe offers more than just tales from the road. He invites readers to embark on a deeply personal journey, uncovering the heart of the places he’s visited and the people he’s encountered. It’s a testament to his belief that travel is not just about seeing new landscapes, but about forging connections and finding a shared humanity. For me, this resonates profoundly. As someone whose life is steeped in the world of travel, Thebe’s philosophy feels like home—a shared understanding that the journey itself is as enriching as the destination.

Our paths have crossed in some of the world’s most vibrant cities, and every meeting has been a reminder of his infectious passion for life and his unyielding commitment to redefining how Africa is perceived globally. One of my most treasured memories with Thebe is a morning at The Taj in Cape Town, shortly after the launch of The Traveller Over breakfast with him and Maps (Maponyane), we spoke about everything from the book to the beauty of Cape Town itself. As we laughed and exchanged stories, Thebe signed copies of his book for Maps and me, penning notes so poetic and layered that they felt like stories of their own. True to his nature as a storyteller, he had to explain his beautiful words to us, weaving yet another tale as only he could.

To know Thebe Ikalafeng is to understand that travel is more than a pursuit; it’s a way of being. He doesn’t just visit places—he immerses himself in them, and in doing so, he teaches us all the value of connection, authenticity, and the endless possibilities that lie beyond our horizons. Moments like that breakfast at The Taj remind me that Thebe’s greatest gift is his ability to make every encounter feel extraordinary, turning even the simplest moments into unforgettable stories.

THE ESSENCE OF OMAN: FRANKINCENSE

WITH KHALID AL AMRI

In the serene opulence of Shangri-La Al Husn in Muscat, Oman, an ancient story is brought to life. Here, Khalid Al Amri, the world’s only frankincense sommelier, leads guests on a sensory journey through the heart of Omani culture, sharing the mystical allure of frankincense. With its origins rooted in the rugged mountains of Dhofar, this ancient resin carries a history as rich as the land it comes from.

“Frankincense is not just a scent; it’s the spirit of Oman,” Khalid says passionately. “It holds the stories of our ancestors, the essence of our hospitality, and the soul of our traditions.”

A LIVING LEGACY

For over 5,000 years, frankincense—or luban, as it is known in Oman—has been treasured for its purifying and healing properties. Harvested from Boswellia sacra trees, its resin was once worth more than gold and transported along the famed Incense Route. Today, its legacy thrives, and Shangri-La Al Husn has woven this timeless treasure into every facet of the guest experience.

At the resort, frankincense isn’t just a historical artifact; it’s a living presence. From the moment guests arrive, they’re enveloped in its delicate fragrance, which fills the air and invites a sense of serenity. In-room amenities feature bespoke frankincense-infused products, blending luxury with tradition. The spa offers treatments inspired by the resin’s therapeutic properties, and even the culinary team has embraced it, incorporating subtle hints of frankincense into dishes, desserts, and beverages.

“The experience here is immersive,” Khalid explains. “It’s about engaging all your senses to truly understand the beauty of frankincense and Oman.”

A CULTURAL IMMERSION

Shangri-La Al Husn has curated a unique itinerary to help guests dive deeper into Omani culture and heritage. Frankincense plays a central role, serving as a bridge between the ancient and the modern. Guests can join guided tours to local souks, where Khalid offers insider tips on haggling with merchants, selecting the finest resin, and understanding its grades and uses.

“It’s more than just shopping,” Khalid says. “It’s about connecting with the Omani people. It’s a conversation between the past and the present.”

Back at the resort, the journey continues with intimate sessions led by Khalid, where he demonstrates how to burn frankincense and reveals the secrets of unlocking its most profound aromas.

A MULTI-SENSORY EXPERIENCE

From spa rituals that harness the resin’s soothing properties to private dining experiences where dishes are infused with its subtle essence, every aspect of a stay at Shangri-La Al Husn is designed to immerse guests in Omani culture. The culinary team creates inspired dishes like frankincense-smoked chicken and indulgent frankincense tart, offering an authentic taste of the country’s heritage.

“The magic of frankincense is that it’s versatile,” Khalid explains. “It enhances food, calms the mind, and heals the body. It’s the essence of wellness and tradition combined.”

A CONNECTION TO THE LAND

For those eager to explore the roots of frankincense, the resort organizes excursions to the Dhofar region, where guests can see the Boswellia sacra trees up close. They’ll learn about the painstaking process of tapping the trees and harvesting the resin—a tradition passed down through generations. Or for something closer to home, Khalid has his very own Frankincense tree garden which he fondly refers to has his ‘babies’.

“When you visit the source, you understand this gift of nature,” Khalid says. “It’s a humbling experience that deepens your appreciation for its value.”

AN UNFORGETTABLE STAY

The Shangri-La Al Husn embodies the elegance and authenticity of Oman. With its architectural nods to Arabian fortresses, breathtaking views of the Gulf of Oman, and thoughtful incorporation of Omani traditions, the resort is a sanctuary where luxury and heritage converge.

“This is more than a hotel,” Khalid reflects. “It’s a gateway to Oman’s soul. Every experience here, whether it’s the scent in the air, the taste of our food, or the stories we share, is designed to leave a lasting impression.”

A SCENT TO REMEMBER

As the sun sets and the fragrance of burning frankincense fills the air, Khalid concludes his sessions. Guests close their eyes, letting the resin’s soothing aroma transport them to the rugged mountains of Dhofar and the storied past of Oman.

For Khalid, sharing frankincense is more than a job—it’s a mission.

“When guests leave, I want them to carry Oman in their hearts,” he says with quiet conviction. “Frankincense is not just a souvenir; it’s a memory, a connection, and a story worth sharing.”

At Shangri-La Al Husn, this ancient resin becomes more than a scent. It transforms into an invitation to discover Oman’s timeless beauty, leaving visitors with a profound sense of connection to its culture, its people, and its enduring legacy.

another highlight for wildlife enthusiasts. Whether on a game drive or a river cruise, the opportunities for unforgettable encounters with nature are endless. Botswana’s commitment to conservation ensures that its pristine environments remain largely untouched, providing an intimate and immersive

There are places in the world that stir something deep within, places where the beauty of the landscape, the wildness of the animals, and the kindness of the people leave an indelible mark on your soul. Botswana’s Okavango Delta is one such place. It’s not merely a destination—it’s an experience that rewrites your relationship with nature, reshapes your understanding of luxury, and reminds you of the magic that still exists in the world.

When I left the Delta, a piece of my heart stayed behind. As the small charter plane ascended over the sprawling floodplains, tears blurred my vision, knowing that no photograph or word could fully encapsulate the connection I had forged with this remarkable land.

A NATURAL MASTERPIECE

The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders. Situated in northern

Botswana, it is a vast, pulsating wetland that sprawls across 15,000 square kilometers during its peak flood season. What makes the Delta so unique is its seasonal flooding—water from Angola’s highlands surges into Botswana, creating a shimmering oasis in the midst of the Kalahari Desert.

This ever-changing landscape is a marvel of diversity. The Delta is a patchwork of open savannahs, palm-fringed islands, winding waterways, and dense mopane forests. One moment, you’re gliding through clear, reed-lined channels in a mokoro (traditional dugout canoe), and the next, you’re watching a pride of lions stalk prey across golden floodplains.

AN EXCEPTIONAL SAFARI EXPERIENCE

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing wildlife in its most natural and undisturbed state, the Okavango Delta delivers on a scale few other places can match. Its game viewing is legendary. From the elusive leopard and fierce lion to the playful antics of hippos and the majestic herds of elephants, this is nature untamed and unfiltered.

The Delta is also home to an astonishing array of birdlife, with over 400 species. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a curious observer, spotting a malachite kingfisher perched on a papyrus stalk or witnessing a fish eagle’s piercing call echo across the water is nothing short of magical.

Unlike other safari destinations, where vehicles crowd around sightings, the Delta offers exclusivity. Private concessions, such as those managed by Wilderness, ensure low-impact tourism, allowing you to experience the wild in intimate solitude.

LUXURY REDEFINED: WILDERNESS SAFARIS

Botswana takes pride in its high-value, low-impact tourism model, ensuring the delicate ecosystems remain unspoiled. Wilderness Safaris epitomizes this approach, offering unparalleled luxury lodges that seamlessly blend comfort, sustainability, and authentic immersion in the wilderness.

Vumbura Plains is one of Wilderness’ crown jewels in the Delta. Set on a vast private concession, it combines modern design with African touches. The suites, raised on wooden platforms, offer sweeping views of the floodplains, often dotted with grazing lechwe and tsessebe. Inside, the accommodations are a symphony of luxury—spacious interiors, plunge pools, and outdoor showers invite you to connect with the surroundings.

BOTSWANA’S OKAVANGO

DELTA: WHERE NATURE’S MAGIC MEETS LUXURY

Then there’s Mombo Camp, situated in the Moremi Game Reserve, often referred to as the “Place of Plenty.” It’s the ultimate embodiment of safari luxury. Renowned for its remarkable predator sightings, Mombo offers a front-row seat to nature’s raw drama. From the intricate detail in the design to the way every meal feels like a celebration, Mombo redefines indulgence.

Dining at Wilderness lodges is an experience all its own. Meals are not merely sustenance—they are a highlight of the journey. Picture enjoying a gourmet breakfast as the sun rises, casting golden light across the floodplains, or savoring a multi-course dinner under a canopy of stars, with the distant call of a hyena completing the ambiance. The chefs at Vumbura Plains and Mombo Camp craft menus inspired by local flavors, showcasing fresh, seasonal ingredients. Whether it’s a decadent dessert enjoyed in the lounge or a surprise bush dinner prepared in the heart of the wilderness, every bite is infused with creativity and care.

What truly sets Wilderness apart, however, is its people. The staff exude warmth and genuine hospitality, making every guest feel like family. Guides are not just experts—they are storytellers, conservationists, and adventurers whose passion for the Delta is contagious. It’s through their eyes that you begin to grasp the intricate connections between the land, the animals, and the people.

UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCES

While game drives and mokoro excursions are quintessential to the Delta experience, the opportunities for adventure go far beyond. Picture yourself soaring above the labyrinth of waterways in a private helicopter, the patchwork of emerald greens and shimmering blues stretching endlessly below. This bird’s-eye view is transformative, giving you a perspective on the scale and complexity of the Delta.

For those seeking a different kind of elevation, a hot air balloon safari at sunrise is a dream. As the balloon gently ascends, the world below awakens—herds of elephants move in unison, and the distant roar of lions breaks the early morning silence. Floating above this untouched wilderness is a moment of pure wonder, one that stays etched in your memory long after you’ve returned home.

ACCESSIBILITY AND SEAMLESS TRAVEL

Getting to the Okavango Delta is far easier than one might imagine. Botswana is well-connected via international flights to Maun, the gateway to the Delta, with regular services from Johannesburg and Cape Town. From Maun, seamless

charter flights whisk you to various camps across the Delta. These light aircraft journeys double as scenic flights, offering breathtaking views of the wetlands below.

Once in the Delta, travel between camps is also by air, making it not only convenient but thrilling. Each camp operates with military precision, ensuring transfers and logistics are handled effortlessly, leaving you free to focus on soaking in the experience.

A CONNECTION THAT ENDURES

Traveling to the Okavango Delta is about more than ticking off a bucket list destination. It’s about recalibrating your senses and rediscovering your place within the grand tapestry of life. The profound stillness of the Delta silences the noise of the modern world. The unhurried pace of the wildlife reminds you to breathe, to observe, to live in the moment.

And when you leave, the Delta doesn’t leave you. It becomes a part of you—a whisper in the back of your mind, urging you to return. It’s the kind smile of the guide who showed you your first wild dog. It’s the taste of freshly baked bread in a camp kitchen in the heart of the wilderness. It’s the awe you felt watching an elephant calf play in the water, untroubled by the world’s chaos.

PRESERVING THE DELTA’S MAGIC

Every visit to the Okavango Delta contributes to its preservation. Botswana’s commitment to sustainable tourism ensures that the Delta remains a haven for wildlife and a sanctuary for travelers seeking a deeper connection to nature. By supporting lodges like Wilderness, which prioritize conservation and community upliftment, you play a part in safeguarding this treasure for generations to come.

A JOURNEY WORTH TAKING

The Okavango Delta is a love letter to the wild, written in the language of sunsets, rustling leaves, and animal calls carried on the wind. It’s a place where luxury isn’t about excess but about authenticity and immersion.

So, pack your bags, and let the Delta change you. Let it awaken your sense of wonder and remind you of the world’s untamed beauty. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, Botswana and its Okavango Delta will welcome you with open arms and leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

MADAGASCAR

Madagascar has been called the land in a forgotten sea. It’s the fourth biggest island on earth and has a number of small peripheral islands off its coastline. With an unparalleled

mixture of endemic wildlife and plant species in a variety of habitats from rainforest to reefs, Madagascar truly is one of the greatest biodiversity regions on earth.

SCAN HERE to view a complete travel itinerary for Madagascar

MADAGASCAR

Human settlement occurred in Madagascar around 1500 years ago with people arriving in canoes from areas around Borneo. A melting pot of cultures, it has a rich history and

unique traditions, with warm, welcoming people at its heart. One of the major attractions to Madagascar is the lemur, with over 100 species endemic to regions across the island.

MADAGASCAR: A TIMELESS JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY

There’s something about Madagascar that captivates the soul and calls you back. It’s not just the pristine beaches, lush rainforests, or vibrant underwater worlds. It’s the people—their warmth, kindness, and genuine hospitality— that make this island nation unforgettable. Madagascar isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that stays with you, a journey that grows richer with every return.

My connection with Madagascar spans nearly two decades. I first visited 19 years ago and was immediately struck by its raw beauty and the sense of connection I felt to the land and its people. Returning so many years later, I found that same magic waiting for me, unchanged yet somehow even more profound.

Madagascar’s capital city, Antananarivo (often called “Tana”), is the starting point for most international travelers, with airlines like Emirates offering convenient connections. However, navigating domestic flights can be challenging due to limited aircraft rotations, so plan your travel carefully. For those heading directly to Nosy Be, flying via Johannesburg, South Africa, can often be a more efficient option, as there are direct flights twice a week to the island. If you’re spending time in Tana, accommodations such as the Radisson properties provide comfortable and reliable options. The city itself is worth exploring with a knowledgeable guide, who can introduce you to its rich history, bustling markets, and vibrant neighborhoods. Don’t miss the chance to sample Tana’s burgeoning food scene with a stop at Café du Musée, where delightful flavors meet stunning views.

NOSY BE: THE ISLAND OF PERFUMES

The perfect introduction to Madagascar’s enchanting allure, Nosy Be, is a tropical gem known as the “Island of Perfumes” for its fragrant ylang-ylang plantations. Here, the atmosphere is intoxicating in every sense—tranquil beaches, lush greenery, and a rhythm of life that invites you to slow down and savor the moment.

A stay at Palm Beach Resort & Spa completes the experience. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, this resort combines understated luxury with island charm. General Manager Marchello is the heart of the operation, going above and beyond to ensure guests feel at home. His warm demeanor and impeccable attention to detail transform every stay into something truly memorable.

Nosy Be is not about luxury for luxury’s sake; it’s about authenticity and harmony with nature. Sunsets paint the horizon in fiery colors, and the ocean breeze carries whispers of adventure waiting to be discovered.

EXPLORING NOSY BE’S ARCHIPELAGO: ISLANDS OF ENCHANTMENT

Beyond Nosy Be lies a collection of islands, each more enchanting than the last. These islands offer a glimpse of Madagascar at its most untouched, with unspoiled beaches, vibrant marine life, and a sense of serenity that’s increasingly rare in today’s world.

• Nosy Komba: Known as “Lemur Island,” Nosy Komba is a lush sanctuary where lemurs roam freely. The island’s charming fishing villages are full of character, offering visitors a chance to step into a simpler, slower-paced way of life.

• Nosy Iranja: This iconic island, with its powdery white sandbar connecting two islets, feels like something out of a dream. It’s also a nesting ground for sea turtles, making it a must-visit for wildlife lovers.

• Nosy Tanikely: A marine reserve that’s a haven for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Beneath its crystalclear waters lies a kaleidoscope of coral reefs, tropical fish, and other marine wonders.

• Sakatia Island: My personal favorite, Sakatia, is a place where time seems to stand still. It’s here that Jose Vieira, owner of Sakatia Lodge, opened not just his lodge but his heart and home to me and my crew. Over the years, Jose’s hospitality has become a cornerstone of my visits. Whether sharing meals, guiding us to hidden spots, or simply chatting under the stars, Jose embodies the soul of Madagascar.

RUSTIC CHARM AND UNSPOILED BEAUTY

Madagascar offers a refreshing departure from overly commercialized destinations. Instead of cookie-cutter resorts, you’ll find boutique properties that blend seamlessly with the environment, from the comfortable elegance of Palm Beach Resort & Spa to the intimate, eco-focused charm of Sakatia Lodge

At Sakatia Lodge, life slows to a gentle pace. Days are spent walking barefoot on the beach, marveling at the natural beauty, and enjoying simple yet exquisite meals made with fresh, local ingredients.

UNDERWATER ADVENTURES: SNORKELING AND DIVING

Madagascar’s underwater world is a marvel in its own right. The reefs surrounding Nosy Be and its neighboring islands are teeming with life, offering incredible opportunities for snorkeling and diving.

In the shallow waters of Nosy Tanikely, you’ll encounter colorful corals and tropical fish, while deeper dives around the archipelago reveal larger marine creatures like manta rays and even whale sharks during their migration. It’s an underwater paradise that rivals the best diving spots in the world.

THE HEART OF MADAGASCAR: ITS PEOPLE

As much as I’m drawn to Madagascar’s natural beauty, it’s the people who truly define this destination. Their warmth, kindness, and authenticity make every visit special. Whether it’s a fisherman sharing his daily catch, a child’s cheerful wave as you pass by, or the genuine care of someone like Jose or Marchello, Madagascar’s people make you feel like part of their family.

I’ll never forget sitting with Jose on Sakatia Island, watching the sun dip below the horizon. He spoke with pride about preserving the island’s natural beauty and his deep connection to the local community. Moments like these are what make Madagascar unforgettable—a place where connections run deep and every experience feels personal.

WHY MADAGASCAR IS A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY

Returning to Madagascar after so many years felt like rediscovering a part of myself. The same raw beauty, the same warm smiles, and the same sense of wonder greeted me as if no time had passed.

For those seeking a place that feels truly unspoiled, where life is simple yet extraordinary, Madagascar offers an escape unlike any other. It’s not just a destination—it’s an experience that leaves an indelible mark on your heart.

So, pack your bags and prepare for a journey of discovery. Madagascar is waiting to welcome you with open arms, and I promise, it will stay with you long after you leave.

TIPS FOR TRAVELING TO MADAGASCAR

Madagascar is an otherworldly destination that rewards those who come prepared. Here are some essential tips to ensure your journey is as seamless and magical as possible:

1. Travel with Someone Who Knows the Landscape

Madagascar is a vast and diverse country with unique terrain and limited infrastructure in some areas. Traveling with someone who has visited before or booking through a knowledgeable tour provider can make all the difference. A local expert or seasoned traveler can guide you to hidden gems like Nosy Iranja’s sandbar or the best snorkeling spots around Nosy Tanikely, ensuring a stressfree and enriching experience.

2. Book with Reliable Tour Providers

When planning your trip, choose reputable tour operators or lodges that prioritize sustainability and support local communities. For island-hopping around Nosy Be, trusted tour guides like Mada Travel or direct bookings with ecoconscious properties like Palm Beach Resort & Spa and Sakatia Lodge will enhance your trip. These providers can handle logistics, boat transfers, and excursions, leaving you free to enjoy the adventure.

3.

Best Time to Visit

Madagascar’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination, but some months are better suited for certain activities:

• April to November: The dry season is ideal for visiting Nosy Be and surrounding islands. These months offer pleasant weather, calm seas, and excellent conditions for snorkeling and diving.

• June to October: Whale-watching season. Humpback whales migrate through Madagascar’s waters, and spotting these gentle giants is a mustdo experience.

• December to March: The wet season brings lush greenery but can make travel more challenging due to heavy rains and cyclones.

4.

What to Pack

Packing thoughtfully will help you make the most of your trip. Here are some essentials:

• Light, breathable clothing: Opt for loose, comfortable clothes in natural fabrics for warm, humid weather.

• Mosquito repellent: Madagascar is a malaria-prone region, especially around Nosy Be. Use a strong DEETbased repellent and consider wearing long sleeves in the evenings.

• Reef-safe sunscreen: Protect your skin and Madagascar’s marine life with ecofriendly sunscreen.

• Snorkeling gear: While gear is often available to rent, having your own ensures comfort and hygiene.

• Sturdy walking shoes: Perfect for exploring villages and light trekking on islands like Nosy Komba.

• Waterproof bags: Essential for keeping valuables safe during boat transfers or sudden tropical downpours

RWANDA: A JEWEL OF AFRICA’S HEART

Nestled in the heart of East Africa, Rwanda is a land of breathtaking beauty, captivating wildlife, and unrelenting hope. Known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” this country is a testament to nature’s splendor and the resilience of its people. From its lush forests to its rolling green landscapes, Rwanda offers travelers an unmatched blend of natural wonders, cultural richness, and warm hospitality. Having visited this remarkable country several times, I am forever enchanted by its vibrant spirit and serene landscapes.

NYUNGWE FOREST: A SYMPHONY OF NATURE

Tucked away in Rwanda’s southwest lies Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s most preserved montane rainforests. Walking through its ancient pathways feels like stepping into an untouched realm where nature reigns supreme. The air here is rich with the earthy scent of moss and wet leaves, while sunlight filters gently through the dense canopy above.

Nyungwe is home to an astounding variety of flora and fauna, with over 300 bird species, 13 primate species, and countless plant types. Among its treasures are chimpanzees, which can be spotted during exhilarating trekking adventures. Hearing their calls echoing through the forest is an experience that stays with you long after you leave.

The Canopy Walkway is a must for the adventurous traveler. Suspended 50 meters above the forest floor, it offers unparalleled views of the treetops and the chance to spot exotic birds and butterflies. It’s a reminder of just how small we are amidst nature’s grandeur.

VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK: A RENDEZVOUS WITH GORILLAS

No visit to Rwanda is complete without an encounter with its most famous residents—the mountain gorillas. Nestled in the Virunga Mountains in the northwest, Volcanoes National Park offers one of the most life-changing wildlife experiences on Earth: gorilla trekking.

The trek begins in the early morning, with expert guides leading small groups through misty bamboo forests and rugged terrain. It can take hours to locate a gorilla family, but when you finally come face-to-face with these majestic creatures, time seems to stand still. Watching a silverback’s commanding presence or a playful infant tumbling in the leaves is humbling and awe-inspiring.

The park also offers golden monkey trekking and hikes to the scenic crater lakes. For history enthusiasts, the Dian Fossey Tomb Trail provides insight into the life of the legendary primatologist whose work helped save these incredible animals from extinction.

For an unforgettable stay, look no further than Wilderness Bisate Lodge. Nestled on the edge of the park, this luxurious eco-lodge combines stunning design inspired by Rwandan traditions with panoramic views of the volcanoes. Each villa is a private sanctuary, offering personalized service, sustainable practices, and a direct connection to the surrounding wilderness.

KIGALI: THE VIBRANT HEART OF RWANDA

Before exploring the countryside, take time to experience Kigali, Rwanda’s dynamic capital. A city of contrasts, Kigali is both modern and steeped in history. Start your journey at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a poignant yet hopeful reminder of the country’s past and its remarkable journey toward healing and unity.

From there, dive into the bustling Kimironko Market, where you’ll find everything from colorful textiles to fresh produce. The energy here is infectious, and it’s a wonderful place to interact with locals and pick up unique souvenirs.

For food lovers, Kigali offers a vibrant culinary scene. Repub Lounge is known for its modern twist on traditional Rwandan dishes, while Poivre Noir serves up fine dining with a French flair. Don’t miss Inzora Rooftop Café, where you can sip locally grown coffee while enjoying panoramic views of the city.

{Rwanda’s thriving coffee industry is also the foundation of various projects that empower local women through widespread initiatives that extend into leading hotels and guest experiences. Through various development programs, women are supported in their entrepreneurial journey managing coffee plantations, that feed into a powerful ecosystem and a growing coffee culture in the country. Question Coffee, one of the more well-known of these projects hosts guests on tours to visit these projects, and enjoy coffee tasting experiences.}

In the evening, unwind at and of the boutique hotels with an eco-friendly ethos. The restaurant at The Retreat by Haven serves farm-to-table dishes that are both creative and delicious, making it the perfect end to a day of exploration.

THE ALLURE OF OTHER DESTINATIONS

Beyond Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda’s Lake Kivu is a serene escape. Its shimmering blue waters are perfect for kayaking, boat trips, or simply relaxing on the shores. The lakeside town of Gisenyi exudes a laid-back charm, with boutique lodges and cozy cafes.

The Akagera National Park, in the east, is another gem. This savannah park is a haven for wildlife, including lions, elephants, and giraffes. A game drive through Akagera offers a contrasting experience to Rwanda’s lush rainforests, highlighting the country’s incredible ecological diversity.

RWANDA’S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

Rwanda is a global leader in eco-tourism and conservation. The country’s efforts to preserve its natural heritage are evident in its well-managed parks, reforestation projects, and initiatives like banning single-use plastics. Conservation fees from gorilla trekking directly support local communities and wildlife protection, creating a sustainable model that benefits everyone.

• Best Time to Visit: June to September (dry season), but the country is beautiful year-round.

• Visa: Easy online application or visa on arrival for most nationalities.

• Currency: Rwandan Franc (RWF), though USD is widely accepted.

• Language: English, French, and Kinyarwanda are widely spoken.

• Connectivity: Excellent roads and a reliable transport system make traveling around the country a breeze.

A PEOPLE WHO STEAL YOUR HEART

While Rwanda’s landscapes are undeniably captivating, it is the people who leave the deepest impression. Rwandans are warm, gracious, and proud to share their culture with visitors. Every interaction, whether it’s a guide explaining the intricacies of gorilla behavior or a vendor offering a heartfelt smile at the market, reinforces the sense of being truly welcomed.

For me, Rwanda is more than a destination; it is an experience that transforms you. It’s a place where you can lose yourself in the tranquility of nature, find inspiration in the resilience of its people, and rediscover the magic of human connection. As I left Kigali on my most recent visit, watching the hills fade into the distance, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the unforgettable encounters, the stories shared, and the quiet moments of reflection in a land that feels like a second home. Rwanda is a testament to the extraordinary beauty of our planet and the indomitable spirit of those who call it home.

If you’ve never been, let Rwanda cast its spell on you. I promise you’ll never want to leave.

Serapa is an indigenous word meaning “fair chase”- it embodies all the finer points of what we stand for. Over three and a half decades ago the Reyneke family welcomed their first visitors to their 46 000 acre piece of Kalahari Eden. Now it’s Yolande, Adolph and Abraham’s turn to personally invite you to experience one of the last great tracts of hunting land. A place they call home, and where they offer you and your family an unforgettable safari experience.

AAA Africa Serapa Safaris is situated in South Africa’s malaria-free, North West Province, close to the Botswana border. You will see 4 of the Big 5 roaming in their habitat. It consists of Savannah/Bushveld vegetation with an annual rainfall of only sixteen inches. The Camelthorn acacia trees are a stunning feature of the area and combined with a Kalahari sunset, you will have memories and photographs to pass down the generations

We offer a variety of unique Educational Travel Programs to South Africa, specifically designed for international learners between the ages of 8 and 17, accompanied by some of their teachers.

Our own journey started as private school teachers in the Limpopo Province back in 2002, from where we passionately launched into Educational Youth Travel, after having followed up on a rare opportunity that came our way at the time. Since then, our main activities have been focused on the French International Youth Travel market, which we continue to serve at present, through the organization and facilitation of our unique brand of English language, and culture based Educational Programs.

Over the years, we successfully hosted more than 300 school groups from France, Reunion Island, Nigeria, DRC, and Gabon, which gained us a solid reputation based on professionalism, appropriate and highly educational program content, as well as excellent value for money.

Most of our current trip-offerings aim at providing learners with an opportunity to improve their English language skills, while also discovering various aspects of the rich cultural and natural diversity of our country. An essential ingredient of many of these programs, is the establishment of a close contact with a local school, and more specifically with South African learners of around the same age. We achieve this by initiating unique contact opportunities with some of our local schools, and also by integrating an optional family homestay phase into the program, for older learners between the ages of 13 and 17. However, our Program content remains flexible and fully-negotiable, and can be adapted to all needs.

The most popular Program duration is between 10 and 15 days, and trips can be scheduled for any time of the year. Transport is by means of fully chartered, luxury, air-conditioned busses. We provide a qualified
