Politically Correct– Essay 2 Like George Carlen, I completely agree that using "soft language" to compensate for simple, honest, direct words has gone too far. He gives examples such as how "shell shock" is now transformed into "PTSD", cripples are now "physical impaired" and so on. Carlen is right in when he says, "soft language takes the life out of life". He's basically saying that we are sugar coating the reality of things. At some point when politically correct language began to gain steam, it heightened people's overall sensitivity level and took away accountability and created an illusion. For example, as Younkin's points out, what is now known as "culturally deprived". It's the 21 century! Yes, we still have different class levels...show more content...

I do agree that there is some language that was developed out of non–deliberateness to which people are overly sensitive to, there has also been language that has been developed in biasness and hate. Where do we draw the line? For example, when Younkins says that "mankind" and "he" were never meant to be deliberately exclude women, I somewhat disagree. Sure it's just a common word that has been used throughout the centuries and no one really thinks about its roots. It has been used for centuries to describe human beings as a whole. I nor anyone I know take that word and see sexism in it, but where did the term come from? If I look back in history to beginning religions, women were initially seen superior due to fertility, but once people realized that the man's seed started the fertility process, they then rewrote religion and began to make men the superior gods and beings. So was the word mankind originally developed to show man's superiority and sexism towards women or was it created out of generality? At the same time, who really cares except feminist extremist. As it is use to toady it is just a generalized term and isn't used to show hostility towards women. Another example is the word "negro". This word was developed to describe what is now, politically correct, an African–American. Just like the word "white person", it was used to describe the person's ethnicity, but due to slavery it has a negative connotation and should not be used. With that being said, I do

Politically Correct: George Carlen

This semester, in English comp II, I have learned a lot of things in class such as improving my vocabulary, the ten core concepts, writing an effective research paper, marketing effectively and writing in workplace. Out of the ten core concepts, my favorite three are; good writing fits the context, a writer must have something to say and good writing means more than good grammar. In good writing fits the context its means writes have to determine the expectations for each writing situation .They must consider their audience and make decisions about content, form, and style that they believe will most effectively meet the expectations of that audience. Good writing is writing that meets the needs of "the rhetorical situation" which often means meeting the specific criteria for an...show more content...

Remember, though, that you when you're beginning a writing assignment, you won't always know exactly what your main point will be. What does men mean for you as a writer? Identify your main idea, have something relevant to say, and make sure that your main idea point is clear to your readers. Good writing means more than good grammar. Following the rules and conventions of standard written English is important, but good is much more than good grammar. A perfectly correctessay can also be a perfectly lousy piece of writing if it does not fulfill the expectations of the task and meets the needs of the intended audience. An error– free history paper won't earn a good grade if it does not meet the instructor's guidelines for historical analysis or if it includes numerous misspelled words, punctuation errors, inappropriate world choice, and convoluted sentences is likely to earn an A+. For better or worse, "grammar" good or bad, makes an impression upon readers, even if it is only one element of effective writing however, if you learn the rules and conventions of standard written English but little else about writing you will most likely not be a good writer. What this mean for you as a Get more content

Ten Core Concepts More Than Good Writing

Examples Of Anger In To Kill A Mockingbird

"Anger and intolerance are the enemies of correct understanding," said Mahatmas Gandhi, a devoted follower of non–violence. He was someone who always maintained his composure and stay level–headed, which helped him make judicious decisions. Anger has the effect making a person lose their calmness force them to make haste decisions. Add intolerance to the mixture and the result is an immoral decision based upon a judgment clouded by prejudice. Anger, ranging from a strong feeling of annoyance to a strong feeling of hostility, can provoke blindness in a person's behavior under the right circumstances. Intolerance, an unwillingness to accept the views, beliefs, or behavior that differ from one's own, is toxic when combined with anger. Anger is dangerous enough as it is on its own, so anger fueled by prejudice is bound to have a catastrophic result. Various types of intolerance are incorporated into our daily lives, sprouting from an individual's unwillingness to accept conflicting concepts to their own. Some of these types include prejudice of race, religion, social class, and gender. In Harper Lee'sTo Kill a Mockingbird, many people, including Scout Finch, question their perception of morality as they encounter numerous forms of discrimination and are put to the test when they must consider their judgment towards Maycomb County's most prejudiced citizens. Racism, a fundamental pillar to discrimination, has become essential to the daily lives of most citizens in Maycomb.

What Is Politically Correct?

The very term Politically Correct has come to be problematic for some. As a tool to discourage and correct linguistic negativity; it has been considered by proponents to have a civilising influence on society (O'Neill 2011). While for opponents the way political correctness works is considered to create more problems than it can solve. This is supported by the assumption that the creation of new words to replace already established words is seen as a creation of a euphemistic treadmill. Where as soon as a new word is created it simply become absorbed and associated as a negative term. Ben O'Neill has expressed in his article A Critique of Politically Correct Language a position that may be perceived as standing on the Side of the opponents

Correct Response In Research

Responses: The response is the behaviour that the therapist wants to see occur from the learner after the antecedent is presented. The responses in the video matched those that were in the lesson plan except for one of the five. The only incorrect response was that Timmy forgot to put on the moustache with the nose in number one. In this situation I prompted him with a gestural prompt to obtain the correct response. Consequences: Consequences are the results when the expected response is provided by the learner. The consequences that were described in the lesson plan were the same as the consequences that were in the video. 1.Moustache and nose are on Mr. Potato Head in correct locations– consequence, "Great Job!" –Verbal reinforce, Play continues– tangible reinforcer–toy. 2."Wonderful! Having a picture of the completed Mr. Potato Head might have been helpful particularly for a visual learner. We didn't use a picture schedule for this scenario as Timmy was familiar with the toy and how to use it, but for another child this might be

Correcting Medical Errors

Whether an error is entered on a paper or electronic chart the error should be corrected immediately. Now the way we go about correcting the medical errors, whether it is paper or electronic is done in two different ways. The way we go about correcting and error in a paper medical record is to put a line through the error and put our initials above the error, to show that we made an error and fixed it. The way we go about correcting an error on an electronic medical record all depends on the software that is being used at the time. So, whatever software is being used, you go by how that certain software shows you how to correct an error. The most common correction of an error made on an electronic medical record is to put a line through it

Definition Of Politically Correct

Politically Correct: Correct or Incorrect

Phrases, coined words, and idiomatic expressions are part of the culture. Due to the flexibility and manageability of words, people create different terms to explain a phenomenon, situation, statement, and person. One example is the term "politically correct." This phrase is open used when discussing political, social, and even religious issues because it is a term given when the person or institution provides a legally justified explanation. However, the definition and context of "politically correct" change nowadays because it tends to destroy or humiliate a person or an institution's statement. Far from its traditional meaning and purpose, the term is now used to emphasize something that is wrong....show more content...

It is used to encourage others to explore their arguments and create good conversation. According to an interview with John Paul Jurasas, a Nazareth history teacher, "I think it [politically correct] forces us to reevaluate what we consider to be acceptable speech, and that's a good conversation to have. I don't see it as something that's limiting, I see it as something that is actually liberating because it can allow you to see things in a new light" (Gleeson, Palder, Roache and Roache). This is an acceptable argument because "politically correct" encourages argument, but it also leads to endless and sometimes senseless debate. When a person says the term "politically correct," it does not mean that the other party is correct–that he should celebrate–but it sometimes means that the other party is foolish or dependent on what is obvious. As a result, debate is either ensued or the person who uses the term wins the

Correct Communication Techniques

Many times a d/Deaf individual won't capture or understand much of what goes around them due to different obstacles in the environment. By facilitating the environment to meet the d/Deaf individuals we again demonstrate that they are entitled to full access of their surroundings in various settings, like all hearing individuals. Taking small actions like finding quiet settings, and asking the deaf person to choose the best seating for communication can help them feel comfortable. The key to this is to be considerate. If you are with a group of people, arranging the seats so that everyone can see each other more clearly will help the situation. Also note the importance of having one person speak at a time. In the documentary For a Deaf Son we see these kind of actions play out in the schools visited by Tommy's dad. These schools for Deaf children adjust their environment so kids have full access to all information that is being communicated to them by the teacher. Most of the time body movements are implemented, background noise is controlled, and the teacher is at a visual length from the students. These set of actions in the school demonstrate they value the Deaf children's rights. A deaf child shouldn't have to work five times as hard as a hearing child just because he /she wasn't born into a deaf world. By arranging the Get more content

Good Usage is Simply Correct Grammar

What is good use? Does it even matter? Those are not easy questions to answer. Is good use just simply using correct grammar or is everyone who is using it just trying to speak above everyone else? What I mean by "trying to speak above others" is using large words, which you normally would not use, just to sound more intelligent than you actually are. I think the type of usage a person uses depends on the audience, the topic, and why the person is writing. Why does good usage have to involve more than just those items?

My answer to that question is that it does not. There are, in fact, many different types of good usage. There is good usage for friendly letters, resumes, cover letters,...show more content...

Should I have to change my usage? That is a whole different story because nobody should have to change something about themselves just to please other people. However, if we want to be employed this is something we will just have to learn to deal with.

But just what is the point of good usage anyway? Who really cares? Employers care and professors care. Without using proper usage people would not be able to find decent employment or receive high marks in any of their classes. Obviously, we are not using good usage to satisfy ourselves, but to satisfy the people around us.

So is there more to why people should use good usage? In my opinion, not really. Good usage is mainly for those simple reasons and examples like them. The only other reason anyone would want to speak so prim and proper is to make themselves sound more intelligent than they actually are. Take for example writing a paper for a professor. Most students will try to sound more intelligent by using large Г¬75 centГ® words (words that anyone would normally have to look up in the dictionary). All this does is make the writers appear to be phony because they do not usually speak that way. Using "75 cent" words just shows the professor that the students know how to use a thesaurus. Which is not always bad, but if students want to use a refreshing new word they should choose one that they would not normally have to look up in the dictionary. Since

Politically Correct Language

Even though many argue that politically correct language has increased sensitivity, politically correct language has heightened awareness of language as well as tensions among people about the terminology employed. Some argue politically correct language is increasing awareness about terms that have become offensive in the eyes of some groups or persons. Many terms have been developed to consider people like the disabled or better defined as differently abled. Differently abled is a more fitting term for those who cannot function normally. These changes in connotation has avoided hurting those who recognize that their way of learning is different or their physicality impedes them from performing everyday tasks. However, Nancy Mairs argues

Self-Fulfilling Reward Of Accomplishment

It is most helpful to have an outside opinion of an essay before being submitted for a final grade. Having someone else read and critique the writing will help us to recognize mistakes that otherwise would go unnoticed by the writer. I was not surprised to see the issues that need attention in my writing; receiving an "82 B" for a grade just supports what I already knew, I have a Get

Three Best Ways to Study For many students studying for an exam or a test can be very stressful. For a lot of them studying is very hard because sometimes most of the materials they study, they don't remember on the actual test or exam. However there are more than one way to study and most theses studying methods can be very helpful and very reliable. A Lot of students tend to cram all the studying two or the night before the test and according to UCLA professor of psychiatry Andrew J. Fuligni (2012) cramming and trying to get as much information in your head two or a night before the test is very counterproductive. A second method of studying is by studying in an appropriate setting (Chadron State College). Studying in an environment where distraction is very easy to find is very difficult. Studying in a quiet setting with a lot of space away from distraction can help you study and can help memory performance. With this setting it's also helpful to be consistent with the studying, studying at the same time and same place is very effective especially when this is done 2 –3 weeks prior to the test quiz or exam. With the proper setting, proper setting is also necessary. " Your study desk or table should be equipped with all the materials you might need to complete the assignment, e.g., pencils, pens, erasers, paper clips, stapler, dictionary, snacks, and liquid refreshments, etc."– Chadron State College. Adding items that can help you study and removing things that might distract is also need for effective studying. The third and final method of studying that is effective is studying while listening to music. According to Goodwin (2015), studying with music before a test can improve attention and can help lessen depression and anxiety. The "Mozart effect" is known to be helpful but of course today the effects will be very different since students don't tend to listen to Mozart. The type of music played also plays a pig role of studying. Studying with music that has lyrics is not recommended

People tend to say that the eyes are the window to the soul and that might be proven true since a study conducted by Cheshire (2014) stated that attractiveness was linked with eye characteristics and approachability was mostly affected by your mouth shape. Additionally, dominance was associated with eyebrow height and cheekbones. While this study might prove that certain facial features give a certain impression, people do not get to choose their facial features. Provided that, judging a person based on their facial features seems unreliable since it shows nothing about who they really are as a person. Similarly, a person's background and culture dictates how they view others, whether based on their facial features or general appearance.
