Accounting Software At some point all business owners will have to get to grips with accounting software. From use as a bookkeeping tool to complete Vat returns, creating annual accounts or simply to raise sales invoices. Accounting software now comes in 3 main forms. Basic Excel spreadsheets, ‘off the shelf’ packages and the modern, online ‘cloud’ based systems. Choosing a solution that is best suited to your needs is essential. Once chosen, it is then a priority to ensure that you are getting the most out of your system using the least amount of time. For many small businesses, using a combination of Excel and Word to run the business works well. This is a perfectly fine approach and if set up right, Excel can certainly rival a lot of accounting software packages, whilst automatically creating a cumulative total of spend/income allowing for Vat calculations to be carried out at relative ease. For the slightly larger businesses an accounts package is preferable. Good accounts software will allow you to easily raise and keep track of sales invoices for each customer, enabling searches by business and days outstanding. It is of course also possible to log all expenditure and associated Vat to be able to create Vat returns and also view profit and loss accounts for specific date ranges. Bank statements can also be imported to ensure that all income and expenditure is captured. The major development in the market over the past few years has been the emergence and subsequent growth of online ‘cloud’ based accountancy software. This software shares all of the characteristics of the traditional ‘off the shelf’ software but is accessible anywhere, anytime, from any computer (or in some cases mobile phones/tablets). Many accountants are now promoting this new solution to clients, allowing them to work remotely whilst the client continues to use the software for day to day activities. This allows real time information on profitability and cash flow to be available to the client, helping them to better understand and grow their business.

T h e G a r d e n i n M AY Let’s play spring catch-up this May! There’s still time to get your garden back on track, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. If I had a shiny new pound for every person who has said to me, “Remember last year? We were all swanning around in shorts in March” I would be well on my way towards buying myself a very handsome dinner. This April, I look out of my window and there are spells of rain and sunny intervals, oh, great and predictable April Showers! Gardeners are obsessed with weather. It’s often too dry, too wet, too cold, too hot, not snowy enough, etc. This fascination serves two purposes - firstly, it always gives us something to talk about. Secondly, it gives us something to worry about. I have been struck by a very obvious statement: there is no point in worrying, because there is absolutely nothing we can do about the weather.

Mankind has discovered, over millennia that the weather will do whatever it wants to do, completely untroubled by the feeble protests of people. While we can do nothing to stop it being horrible, we can still find ways to keep ourselves busy. As I write, my garden is recovering, admittedly slowly, and now soil temperatures are where they should be there’s no excuse why the garden cannot play catch-up, albeit with a little help from us. As a nation, we gardeners don’t feed our plants nearly enough and that is one task that must take priority over the coming few weeks. The rainfall levels of late will have washed out much of the nutrient goodness from our soils, so it needs replenishing. So, all fruit bushes, fruit trees, trees, shrubs and perennials will benefit from an application of Vitax Q4 or Blood, Fish & Bone, the organic alternative. Always read the instructions before applying. If you can, apply a 2in (5cm) mulch of compost or composted bark around recently planted stock, again just to help in the establishment process. Likewise, our lawns, too, will benefit from a traditional spring feed, or opt for a Weed & Feed. If moss is an issue - a Feed, Weed, Mosskiller and water absorption product such as Evergreen Complete 4-in-1 should do the trick. If you haven’t already done so, spike the area thoroughly prior to applying these products.

Aim to get your tomato plants planted in pots, cropping bags or baskets, depending on variety by the end of the month. If you are growing the new grafted tomato plants (and if you have not tried these they are well worth checking out), take a tip from the growers and set them in generous sized pots - 18in (45cm) minimum and use a good quality multi-purpose compost. The reason is simply to do with their roots – they are incredibly vigorous so trying to grow them well in a shallow grow bag doesn’t especially suit them. However, your traditional seed raised ‘Alicante’, ‘Moneymaker’, ‘Gardener’s Delight’ and ‘Shirley’ are less fussy so keep them happy in a cropping bag. Fleece or pop over a plastic bell cloche to protect them from late frosts if necessary.
So, here are a few more tasks to get cracking on with.... • Late maincrop Potatoes can be risked outside now. Plant them about 15cm (6in) deep but be prepared to cover the area with fleece or other suitable material if there is danger of frost. • If you grow Dogwood (Cornus) (pictured top right) and Willow (Salix) for the colour of their stems, cut them back hard now. This will promote strong new growth and coloured stems that will be attractive next winter. • Once they have finished flowering, prune shrubs such as Forsythia, Kerria, Chimonanthus praecox (pictured right) and spring flowering Broom to give them maximum time to grow before next spring. Remember these shrubs flower on the previous year’s growth.

T h e G a r d e n i n M AY • Hardy herbs such as Parsley, Fennel, Chives and Coriander can be sown outside. Sow them in drills, as for vegetables, and place in their final destination once large enough to handle. • Get planting/sowing your salad crops now, including Beetroot, Lettuce, Spring Onions and Radish. Brassicas that need establishing include Cabbage, Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli and Cauliflower. • Deadhead spent flowering Daffodil and Tulip flowers to prevent the plant’s energy going into making seed rather than building up the bulb. Don’t remove the leaves (or rope them in knots!) as these help them store energy.

Although often regarded as a tad elitist by many, one of its enduring qualities is that it brings inspiration, gardening excitement and an opportunity to find out what’s in and out as far as gardening fashion. However, this year’s show I suspect will look back with nostalgia (some of the gardens will look at how gardens, garden design and garden plants have changed over the decades) and forward for new, innovative ideas, many of which will be practical and do-able at home. So, embrace the ideas from the Chelsea Dream Factory, you never know you might be onto a winner and something so cutting-edge you’ll have your neighbours swooning over your Chelsea-inspired plantings. A favourite from last year’s show was the absence of the traditional lawn which was replaced by named varieties of grass being planted in swaths, mixed in with ornamental planting with harmonising results. Purple flowers, like Verbena bonariensis growing through Stipa was one of the looks which you could easily create.
