Therefore, a couple could potentially invest up to £21,360 in a SHARE ISA and receive ‘tax-free’ income of £1,068. (It should be noted that investments can fall as well as rise, and past performance is no indication of future returns. This month will see growth on most woody plants and those that have succumbed to the December lows will be easy to spot. The list of species that didn’t make it through however, is long and expensive.

The Garden in April For a hardier version of ceanothus try the deciduous forms such as Topaz, a late summer flowering shrubby variety with pale blue flowers. Evergreen forms should be grown on a warm, south-facing wall. Phormiums should have free-draining soil and a warm sunny spot. Protection may be required in extreme temperatures. This also applies to Pittosporum and Bay Laurels.

Flowers can range from white, through pink to pale blues. One of the best known shrubs is Forsythia, a true herald of spring. They are ideally pruned after flowering to allow the new season’s growth to produce new flower buds next year. This also applies to many other winter and early season flowering shrubs.

Looking Good Looking gorgeous at the moment are the dainty Pulmonarias (as picture). The ‘Lungwort’, taking it’s name from the speckled leaves, acts as a useful ground cover perennial and does well in the shade.

Once the longer, lush growth is removed (not too low), try ‘mulch-mowing’ as often as possible. This returns nutrient to the grass and can help to retain moisture in the soil.
