Health &Beauty 5th Brackley Wine Festival Brackley Town Hall – 26 April 2014 The 5th Brackley Wine Festival will provide the opportunity to taste and buy wine from a huge world-wide range and also support local charities. The festival will be held at Brackley Town Hall on Saturday 26 April between 12.00 noon and 6.00pm. Stallholders will include Members of the Association of Small Direct Wine Merchants and local independent suppliers. The festival gives the opportunity to taste new wines, guided by experts, where quality and flavour take precedence over brands and mass production.The festival is being sponsored by Direct Legal & Collections of Brackley and it is organised by Brackley Rotary Club. The event organiser, Rotarian Trevor Davies, said, “Following the success of previous years’ events the festival provides a tasting opportunity for wine lovers to discover and buy new wines without the risk of the wine not being to their palate.” “Proceeds from the entrance fee of £6 will primarily benefit NORPIP - Northamptonshire Parent Infant Partnership and Home-Start (South Northants). We found Jeremy!
Sister’s search for roadside hero is successful
The sister of a man who died on a roadside in Northamptonshire last year, has found the individual who tried to save his life. Jeremy Kean, from Surrey, came forward just five days after #findjeremy, the campaign to find him, was launched. On September 26, 2013, Jeremy pulled over on the A43 near Towcester, to help local man Steve Gregory who had collapsed after coming off his motorcycle. A certified first aider (CFR), Jeremy gave CPR for 15 minutes, until an ambulance
arrived at the scene. Where he wasn’t able to save Mr Gregory’s like from the brain haemorrhage which proved fateful, the stranger’s first aid was lifesaving for others. The CPR was so effective that Mr Gregory’s organs were kept alive long enough for his two kidneys and liver to be donated, saving the lives of three people. Mr Gregory’s sister, Tina Loggin, of Charlton, Banbury, searched ever since the incident for the man who delivered this lifesaving treatment, and was successful with the #findjeremy campaign which launched in early February. Aided by press and radio coverage across more than four counties, the campaign gained the attention of the Ambulance Trust, which was able to locate
Jeremy. It was a pleasant surprise for Jeremy when he heard from Tina: “Although the outcome was very sad, it was great to hear that three other people have benefited from Steve's generosity (as an organ donor). It was very nice of Tina to make such an effort to find me, and I now have a twitter account, much to the surprise of my children! Being a CFR is very rewarding and it is nice to know our efforts are appreciated.” For Tina, finding Jeremy has given her the closure she was looking for: “Finding Jeremy has closed a door for our family now and I would like to thank all who joined in the campaign and spread the word.”

Instead of leaving your bags on your door step on a specific day, they are asking you phone or text when you have some ready to collect (at least a sack), as in the past the bags that have been left out for scouts have been taken by bogus collectors. The bags of clothes will help a group of local scouts and scouts from around the world attend the World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015. The aim of The World Scout Jamboree is to learn about other cultures and have an improved awareness of global issues such as peace, the environment, development, human rights and health among participants.

The league table does not lie and Brackley Town’s faltering form is reflected in full measure. T h e G a r d e n i n April At last the dry weather is here after the winter of record-breaking rainfall, and a remarkable lack of snow and frost. At least the water table has been replenished and any new planting should now flourish.

There is no finer site than a Cherry tree in full flower. Ornamental forms include Japanese Cherries that bear a profusion of fragrant blossoms in pink or white, and many have good
autumn colour. Perhaps the most stunning are those Chaenomeles ‘Apple Blossom’ varieties with spreading habits and gorgeous displays of white flowers, such as ‘Shirotae’ and ‘Shirofugen’. If planting these forms, do allow them plenty of width to develop their shape. A little more down to earth are the Epimediums. These dainty plants can make good ground cover in shade. Many are evergreen and produce small starry flowers such as E. grandiflorum.

Chaenomeles or ‘Japonica’ are excellent wall shrubs, particularly on a north facing wall or fence. The cheerful blossom can be white to all shades of pink and also red. Chaenomeles ‘Apple Blossom’ (see pic.) has pink edged flowers in profusion and looks great against a dark backdrop.
