Towing your home for the week can be plain sailing, even for a novice, so long as you stick to the legal requirements and follow a few simple guidelines. Your first choice for information - on towing, choosing a caravan and campsite – is from the Caravan Club http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/ As you’ll see from their site, there are several rules to be adhered to when towing – the most important one is determined by when you passed your driving test. Help your pet keep cool... Most of us are delighted to see the sunshine, and are planning days out, picnics, maybe trips to the seaside. For our four-legged companions, however, hot weather is not quite so welcome. Wearing a big fur coat on a hot day is not the very best combination…….add in travelling in a car which intensifies the heat, and you have a recipe for a very unhappy pet. Many breeds, such as pugs, have ‘brachycephalic’ or ‘flat’ faces, with short noses, which means their ability to cool themselves down by panting is reduced. Other breeds which are older, fatter or have very long or thick fur may also need extra care to keep cool. Once you see any breed of dog panting to try to cool down, it’s time to act to help your furry friend feel happier. Top tips for happy travelling with your pet: • Never, ever, leave your dog in the car in Summer, even if it’s not too sunny, or you’re parked in the shade, or the windows are down it will still get too hot in there – it’s illegal to let your pet suffer, and your much loved dog could die.

• Always take drinking water with you on a trip with your dog, and plan regular breaks in the journey for your pet to drink & pee. • Try to travel in cooler parts of the day – early in the morning or late in the evening are best, and may well mean the traffic is lighter, too. • Look out for the signs of heatstroke, and know how to treat your pet in an emergency. Heavy panting, rapid pulse, very red gums along with a raised temperature are all warning signs – call a vet for advice, cool your pet slowly by spraying with water and offering water to drink. • If you find a distressed dog in a car when you’re out & about, try to find the owner. If you can’t, please call 999 – it’s an emergency and the police will break in to rescue the animal.

Children’s bedroom safety tips.....

If you’re moving house over the Summer, or the light evenings and balmy weather have inspired you to do a touch of redecorating in your children’s bedrooms, safety is an important consideration. We all know when our children are first born, that we have to keep them away from dangers all around the home, but there are many everyday scenarios that could put an older child at risk. • A bed or sofa placed underneath a window could lead to adventurous pre-teens falling from a great height, so fit window locks and be sure the keys are easily accessible to adults, in case of fire. • Radiators beside beds can lead to overheating, an exacerbation of allergies caused by house dust mites, or even minor burns to the skin. Move the bed away from heat sources and fit thermostatic radiator valves, so that the temperature in the room can be controlled.

A helping hand for those in need

Sometimes life can take an unfortunate turn. Fortunately for Brackley residents facing personal crisis, the town’s Food Bank scheme is in force. Established in April 2010, Brackley Food Bank provides – free of charge three days’ worth of packaged food to those in need. Two teams of volunteers hand out bundles of goods for adults and children, which can be collected using vouchers issued by local professionals; including clergy, doctors and head teachers. Volunteer, Alan Perkins, became involved with the Food Bank through his work with the Churches in Brackley Committee, which first launched the scheme. He says; “There really is a 22

need in our town for this level of support; and the best thing about the Food Bank is it’s so easy for people to help! Just buying an extra one or two items as part of a weekly shop makes a small difference to the final cost, but a huge difference to a person in need.” Brackley Food Bank runs every Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10am and 12 noon, at Brackley Town Hall. The team is in particular need of long life fruit juice, UHT milk, sugar, cereal, biscuits, jam, pasta sauce, and canned tomatoes, fruit and potatoes. Donations can be handed in to a member of the team. Please note: Food Bank is

unable to accept any product which has exceeded its best before date. Interested in volunteering? Please contact: Mark Curtis, on 07720 914975, Alan Perkins, on 01869 810687, or pop into the Town Hall during their opening hours, where you will find Jenny Nisbet, May Gallagher and their teams. You can expect a friendly welcome, whomever you contact.

Your plumber or heating engineer can assist you with this. • Cords on blinds or light switches can present a hazard, especially when children are younger. Make sure all pull cords are looped up out of harm’s way. • Bunk beds are great fun, but children under the age of six or seven are just too young to safely climb up & down ladders when they’re hardly awake – a lower level divan or cabin bed is safer if you have the space. • Plug socket covers are vital in young children’s rooms, and check little details like sharp corners on desks or other furniture. • Secure tall bookcases to the wall, just in case your child decides to climb the shelves and the whole thing topples over….. Kids love colours & adventure, so with a few steps to keep them safe, you can let their imaginations run riot and create a bedroom that you are all delighted with!

School of Life – Bringing Generations Together! "Intergenerational practice aims to bring people together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities which promote greater understanding and respect between generations and contributes to building more cohesive communities. Intergenerational practice is inclusive, building on the positive resources that the young and old have to offer each other and those around them (Definition of Intergenerational Practice: Beth Johnson Foundation, April 2001)" We are now planning the final Year of “School of Life” which started 1st July 2013. So please, if you would like me to work on your group’s project ideas please contact me soon so I can include you in our annual plan. The limited slots get allocated fast so please phone sooner rather than later. School of life can offer intergenerational best practice guidance, access to School of Life funding, publicity, engagement of volunteers, project coordinator and ideas to sustain the project into the future.

The main outcomes we plan to achieve are; • To engage people in South Northamptonshire that are under 25 and over 50 • To facilitate the sharing of skills and increase confidence between the generations • To support people to gain the ability to use these new skills in their lives • To reduce isolation and widen friendships My favorite quote of the year was during a sharing of home skills with young parents from Surestart and the Towcester WI. One young mum said. “I didn’t realize how much I could learn from older people of simple every day things that I now use like sewing a button on and making banana bread”. The WI ladies all agreed that by getting involved with this project they realized just how much they had to offer to younger people and really enjoyed the process.

please visit our webpage at www.snvb.org.uk School of Life page or contact amanda@snvb.org.uk or ring 01280 841250, text 07546404883 So whatever age you are I would welcome you to get involved, this is a perfect opportunity for unique and interesting activities, one off volunteering experiences, support for your project, an insight to the barriers and benefits of working across generations within your community and much more. Written by Amanda Harris

Last year we included activities such as Angling and Wildlife, Animation Station, Home skills, Drama and several more. If you would like to have a look at some previous events 31

The Garden in August Creating the best look for free! of “Open Gardens” signs offering gardeners a grand opportunity to be right nosey! Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day encourages us to do some garden snooping with the prospect of colourful rewards at the end. The National Garden Scheme is one of the simplest and relatively inexpensive delights for many of us interested in gardening and its one of the best ways to find out what grows well in your immediate area, perfect if you are unsure of the soil type or local preferences.

its not a job, its our passion!

However, I have to admit one of the main reasons I like to wander around local gardens is to see the how people place their plants together. Yes, I know we can do this at big shows like RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court, but these are created for a specific time slot rather than for the overall look

Written by Chris Day Buckingham Garden Centre 01280 822133 of an established garden. So, if you like to gain inspiration from the great plant designers at gardens such as Sissinghurst or Hidcote (both National Trust Gardens and well worth visiting), do please also spare some time browsing in gardens on your doorstep and you won’t be disappointed. Take your note book, a camera or use your phone camera, seeking the necessary permission naturally before you do. From my experience, taking photographs is one of the greatest compliments you can make, especially if you briefly mention you are looking for heaps of inspiration and you wish to capture it digitally! You can also look for these stunning eye-catching plant groups from magazines, by cutting them out and using them as a reminder for later plantings. The next step is to put what you have seen and recorded into practise. By far the easiest way of creating good plant associations is to choose and plant them in threes. Select three contrasting plant shapes; one tallish or fairly upright plant, one roundish, bushy shape, and one creeping or low-spreading plant. This recipe works well for all sorts of plant groupings, with shrubs and groundcover plants, roses

and perennials, or even alpines for a rock feature or sink garden. Choose contrasting flower shapes; one daisy-like; one with flowers dotted along upright spikes and one with lots of tiny, frothy "filler" flowers. This recipe works best in a colourful, herbaceous border or a very flowery mixed border, but you can also apply it to container schemes for patios. The same principle applies with leaves; choosing one feathery shape, one grassy shape and one dome shape for a foliage effect. Or choose one upright, stemmy plant, one striking, large-leaved specimen and a short, small-leaved spreader for an architectural association. It's not difficult to choose three plants that go together (it's much easier than trying to plan a whole border all at once), and when you've created one

trio, you can go on to make more, then put them all together to fill the space. At the Garden Centre, you can stand a trio of plants in a group on the path to see how they look together before you commit yourself to buying. If you are choosing one or two plants to team with something that's already growing at home, find an example in a pot at the nursery (if they don't have one, look for something else that's roughly the same shape or colour) and stand the possible purchases next to it to judge the overall effect. Once at home, do experiment by placing a new plant, still in its pot, in several possible planting positions for a few days at a time so you can judge

Page 42

the effect from all angles and at all times of day or take photos of all the alternative places to compare side by side. Remember it’s worth taking the time at this point to ensure you have created the best look. Although this seems pretty straightforward, the plants you have selected must be compatible with one another. So, before you buy, check they are equally suitable as far as soil and location. They must like their home and be happy to share the same amount of sun or shade, soil type, pH and moisture levels. Double checking the labels for this information as well as making sure the plants eventual heights don’t cause issues later and you don't team rampant-growing plants with fussy, delicate, slow-growing treasures. However, if you are unsure, do check with the Plants Team at the Garden Centre, sometimes tweaking the odd variety is all that is required to create that “wow” look!

start them off and lightly cover the seeds. Germination should take around 7-10 days and you can grow the plants on outdoors in a sunny but sheltered part of the garden. Once they have made sturdy young plants, around 10cm (2in) high, they can be planted directly out where they are to flower next year.

TOP TIP

Many gardeners have their own palette of specific filler plants; these are plants that may appear randomly (set in between existing plants) or by design to add useful splashes of colour in spring and early summer. Plants in this grouping include Aquilegia, Digitalis (Foxgloves), Myosotis (Forget-MeNots) and Lunaria annua (Honesty) to name just a few. Well, now is the time to get these sown and grown on for planting in their final planting locations in October. For speed and efficiency, sow a pinch of seed directly into each cell – the plastic trays contain 20 or 40 cells. Use some well-sieved multi-purpose compost to

Brady’s Boys are back in Town

Photographer Brian Martin

With Murray’s magnificent Wimbledon behind us, the Lions triumphant and the Ashes series underway, football hoves into view once more. After a memorable year that saw Brackley Town lose out only in the play-off final to FC Halifax, Saints begin their second season in the Conference North on 17 August away at Barrow – one of the longest journeys in the year. The first home fixtures are against Histon (Tues 20 August) and Worcester City (Sat 24 August). The season begins also with the St James Park stadium boasting new facilities such as the 3G artificial grass pitch and refurbished clubhouse along with a new club website with features designed to keep the most avid supporters along with casual visitors well informed. The Twitter feed is live on the homepage for news and match-day team and score up-dates and Talk of the Town is a new addition bringing you regular bulletins and opinion about all aspects of the club with a first team focus and links to further articles and stats.

sp

You can visit Talk of the Town via the website or you may choose to subscribe to receive new posts direct to your PC, laptop or phone. On the field, manager Jon Brady has a fist of fine friendly fixtures to whet the appetite before the league action gets underway. A few departures and some new arrivals sees Brady’s squad taking shape with the core of last season’s play-off finalist team on board signed up to provide continuity alongside several new signings including exciting striker Charlie Griffin. Follow Brackley Town - the Saints; stay in touch with Talk of the Town. We have a team to be proud of!
