First the Soapbox Derby was postponed, then Zumbathon, as well as some of the local schools’ summer fetes. All is not lost though! These key events have been rescheduled – as we went to press, the following revised dates had just been announced. The Zumbathon will now be held on 15th September at Magdalen School (St John’s site). If you haven’t already heard, Zumba is a dance fitness program which features exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. The charity Zumbathon is open to all – from complete beginners to Zumba experts – and is a fantastic way to have fun while raising money for this year’s chosen charity, Cystic Fibrosis Research. There’s no sponsorship money to find; you just buy a ticket and away you go! Adult tickets cost £10 and are available from The Little Oaks Pre-school Summer Fete will now be held on 22nd September. Everyone is welcome to visit the fete to enjoy face painting, various stalls and activities and (hopefully) a barbeque. The much anticipated Soapbox Derby has been rescheduled for 30th September. All entrants to the original event will have automatic entry and places are available to anyone who could not make the postponed June date. See www.brackleysoapbox.org for further details.

Once in a Blue Moon.... I’d use that phrase to mean ‘very rarely’, but what actually is a Blue Moon? Here are the facts.... •The next one is due on 31st August, and before you ask – no, it won’t be coloured blue! It’s name for the second Full Moon in a calendar month, so as it’s the second Full Moon in August, it’s a Blue Moon. •It only happens once every two and a half years or so, and can never occur in February, as there aren’t enough days in the month – a Full Moon occurs every 29 days.

DEFRAG FOR MORE SPEED Heard of defragmentation? If you are a computer user, it’s definitely something you should know about. By not defragmenting your PC on a regular basis you can be left with a much slower machine or worse. The Windows operating system will place a file or a program in any available space on your computer’s hard drive. This means that one file may not be stored in one particular place. Bits of a file may be stored in several different places. Over time, your hard drive can become fragmented with many files split into many different bits and stored in various locations on the drive. A heavily fragmented drive can make your once speedy PC seem sluggish as your computer takes more time to find the information called for. By defragmenting your hard drive, all the parts of a file are put together in the same place on your hard drive. It’s like reorganising a dreadful filing system into one which makes much more sense. Running this maintenance task can help keep your PC running at top speed. There are several programs designed to help you defrag your PC. Google defragmentation to find out more. During difficult economic times, it can be hard for teens to make a little money to spend on themselves. But there’s plenty of opportunity out there if you are prepared to put in a lot of hard work. Here are some ideas: Start at home. Offer to do jobs around the house in return for some extra pocket money. Work for yourself! Babysit, walk dogs, mow lawns, wash cars, and look after neighbours’ pets while they are away. It all seems like hard work for little reward but every penny will be yours. Try advertising on Facebook sites, by distributing flyers through neighbours’ doors, or by placing a card in local shops. Don’t hang around and wait for the work to come to you – ask friends of your family if they need any work done. Do a good job and they’ll spread the word! If strangers aren’t too keen on employing you by yourself, consider teaming up with a friend or two. For a little extra cash, consider selling some stuff that you no longer use or need. Check with your parents first though! Offer to sell unwanted stuff on their behalf (for a cut of the profits of course!). Look online for sites that pay you to take part in online surveys. Brackley Sausage and Cider Festival! A taste of the West Country will be coming to Brackley on August 11th as the town plays host to its first Sausage and Cider Festival. The event will take place at Brackley Rugby Club and will celebrate real cider made by artisan producers as well as locally made sausages. Live music will entertain the crowds. All 20 varieties of gourmet sausages at the festival will be made by Northamptonshire sausage-maker Duncan Brown. The event will have local companies promoting their business, products and services for pregnancy, birth, babies, toddlers and the family. This is a great chance for local companies to show off what they have to offer, and also to help parents/parents-to-be to be able to get all they need for their pregnancy and beyond. We will also be announcing the winner of the Brackley Cute Kid Photo Competition, which has been run in conjunction with Fiona Baker Photography. The winner will be announced at 2pm. On the day Fiona will also be taking photos for our ‘Baby of the Fayre’ Competition. Angling Coaching Session Brackley and District Angling Club are offering coaching sessions, to encourage budding & improving young anglers, on selected Saturdays throughout 2012. If you haven’t made it to a session yet and you’d like to give angling a try, book your place for August 18th. Taking place between 10am and 1pm, the coaching is designed to help you progress through the levels, from Starter to Competent. Choosing A Tradesman If you want to improve your home or need someone to repair something significant in your home, then selecting a suitable tradesman (or woman) can be a daunting task. Of course you want to employ someone who is qualified, a specialist in their field. What’s more, you need to find someone you can trust to be in your home, whether you are there or not. And you certainly want to be sure that the price you are offered is reasonable and fair for the job to be done. There are steps you can take to ensure you find the best person to do a fantastic job at a price you can live with. Many people will suggest that you should get at least three quotes from different companies. You can find potential tradesmen through the adverts in this In Business magazine and through word of mouth. People often forget to ensure that they ask for exactly the same work from each person – you can’t compare like-for-like if the task has been interpreted slightly differently. It’s advisable to give each tradesman a detailed written description of the work

to be carried out and to request a written estimate (with clear breakdown of the cost) from each one. For each tradesman who provides an estimate that interests you, do further investigation. Ask for at least three references and check them. Try to view their work and ask lots of questions. Ensure that the tradesman is fully insured to undertake the job you want carried out. Don’t be rushed into making a decision. August / September Having had an exceptionally long wet period that has run from April, with only occasional drier spells, growth this summer is unprecedented, with our rain forest like climate. Will it herald a fine late summer? I would expect a lovely September and October.
Jobs in the garden Dead-heading and pruning continue in the ‘ornamental’ garden. Lavender, when it has finished flowering, is a prime case for trimming over as this encourages bushy growth, and delays the tendency to lax, open plants as they age. A second trim at the end of winter will help in this respect.

Many types of hedge are best pruned this month. The slight re growth made by the autumn will make for a neat effect through the winter months, before new growth starts in the spring. In the kitchen garden, strawberry plants can be tidied, cutting back old growth. If more than three years old, consider replanting with healthy new ones.
