Welcome... DECEMBER/JANUARY ISSUE 2016

....Well, here we are at Christmas again! I think I blinked and missed most of 2015, it whizzed by so fast! They do say that time flies when you’re having fun, so maybe that goes at least part way to explain things – it certainly has been a pretty impressively memorable year, made all the better by having the company of all of you to share it with. Christmas is such a fabulous time to spend with all our friends and family – two legged, four legged, at home or spread across the globe – with presents, cards and precious time spent together. It’s also a fantastic time for FOOD! With over 3000 calories in the average Christmas dinner, I’m looking forward to savouring every single one – it’s lovely to have that one special day a year to let your hair down – eat, drink and be merry… .mmmmm!! As I mentioned, this year would certainly not have been as brilliant without all our readers, advertisers, distributors and contributors – so thank you all for your loyalty and company in 2015, and here’s to another healthy, wealthy and wonderful year together in 2016!

The weather’s turning colder, the hours of darkness outnumber those of daylight, and roadside rescue organisations are facing their busiest time of year, but you can perform a few simple checks on your car to prevent it from joining those parked up with the hazard lights on…... Tyres – tread depth and tyre pressure. Slippery conditions mean adequate depth of tread is essential, and a minimum of 1.6mm is the law. You can buy a gauge to check, but it’s just as easy to pop into your local garage or tyre centre, who may check them for you free of charge. Pressure is just as important – under or over-inflated tyres can affect handling and safety, particularly in wet or icy weather. Your car’s manual will suggest the correct pressures for front and rear tyres. Antifreeze – definitely worth a check, now the nights are frosty. A simple tester kit will let you know the concentration already in your radiator, so that you can add the correct amount to prevent the coolant freezing in very cold weather. Battery – short journeys with the headlights on and heater running will use more ‘juice’ than the alternator can add each time, leading to battery depletion. Making longer journeys in the daytime, or using a battery charger, can help to replace the charge that’s being lost, meaning that the early morning failure to start is much less likely to happen.

Do you have a property in Europe? In August, new EU rules came into place clarifying the position regarding the devolution of property on your death. Previously, those dealing with a deceased’s assets abroad have had the time consuming task of establishing which of the country’s differing succession laws apply to that estate. The new EU legislation ‘EU Regulation 650-2012’, or ‘Brussels IV’ unifies the succession law of participating states and should therefore allow an individual to carry out succession planning with some confidence. Although the UK, Ireland and Denmark have opted out of these new rules, Brussels IV affects all assets in states which have implemented it, regardless of where the individual dies or his nationality.

12

If you have assets on the continent, other than in Denmark, you can now elect for ‘UK’ law to apply. This should help to avoid forced heirship provisions which apply in, for instance, France and Spain where on death, your property will be inherited by certain family members whether you like it or not. Cross-border estates remain complex and you should consult with an experienced solicitor who can provide further advice. For more information please contact Lucy Gordon, Private Capital Partner at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01295 204000 or by email at lgordon@se-law.co.uk.

Christmas trees We’re all feeling excited and festive, but the prospect of that annual trek to choose a tree always has me in a bit of a flummox…..real or fake? How tall? Will it fit in the car?! There are so very many choices, so here are a few pointers to make the choosing a little less of a challenge! Real vs. fake – households with crawling babies, or where space is at a premium, may prefer an artificial tree, or a real variety with non-drop foliage. If the look and smell of a real tree matters to you, why not consider choosing a potted one, that won’t drop needles and can live outside the rest of the year? How high? Measure ceiling height, subtract the height of your stand and the star to go on the top of the tree, and get choosing! Real trees can always be trimmed a

little if they won’t fit the space, and artificial trees are available in a huge range of heights, widths and colours. Budget – artificial trees, or potted real ones that are still growing, can save money each year, but can be a much larger initial expense. Real trees can be bought from local nurseries and a huge range of sizes and varieties are available – speak to the knowledgeable staff at your garden centre for advice. Afterwards – if you choose an artificial tree, it can be packed away and stored until next year, in a cupboard or loft. If it’s a potted tree, the garden is the best place, until next year – but it may outgrow your home, or need repotting, and you will have to care for it throughout the year. A cut real tree will only last for the festive season, but can be recycled or chipped up to use as garden mulch and so will benefit your plants all year round!

Food, glorious food!

Mulled wine is a well-known festive favourite, but if you fancy a Christmas drink without the alcohol, here are a couple of ideas to try, to create a cosy atmosphere and put you in a celebratory mood!

Christmassy Chocolate Heaven Make a large mug of cocoa or drinking chocolate as usual, and a stir in a pinch of ground cinnamon. Add a sprinkle of grated chocolate, and a dusting of icing sugar. A squirt of whipped cream or vanilla icecream float completes the decadent delight, with an iced gingerbread biscuit for dunking – pure indulgence!

and juice of a large orange, a cinnamon stick or sachet of mulling spices and stir in a few tablespoons of runny honey, to taste. Heat gently and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring regularly and do not allow the mixture to boil. Remove the mulling spices and serve – a fruity favourite, the party drink that everyone can enjoy! As energy bills rise, do you feel As

As energy bills rise, do you feel nervous about turning up the thermostat at home? Well, take heart, because there are lots of things you can do to get a handle on the heating this winter - so read on and look after yourself. Make yourself warmer Wear several thin layers, rather than one thick layer. This is because they trap warm air close to the body. Go for clothes made from wool, cotton or fleecy fabrics, if possible. Draw your curtains, as soon as it gets dark to stop the heat escaping and the draughts coming in. Keep any windows and internal doors

and rice. Try porridge with hot milk for breakfast and soups and stews for lunch and dinner. If you’re sitting down, a A lot of heat is lost through the head and neck, so if you’re chilly indoors, try wearing a hat and scarf. Your body keeps warm by burning food you've eaten, so make sure you have regular hot meals that contain carbs, such as potatoes, pasta, bread

shawl or blanket will provide extra warmth. You should also try to keep your feet up, because air is cooler at ground level. Wear warm clothes in bed. When it’s really cold, wear thermal underwear, bed socks and even a hat.

Family time, being with loved ones, plenty of presents, eating too much? Whilst we are enjoying planning and wrapping, baking and making, it’s also a time to think about all those less fortunate than ourselves – and make their festive season just a little happier. Giving to charity isn’t just for the very rich – we can all do a little to make a difference. Just buying an extra tin or two with your supermarket shop and popping them in the food bank collection basket is no effort and costs less than a pound, but will benefit someone who may otherwise not enjoy their Christmas. Here are a few more ideas that will spread a little happiness this festive season: – help at a drop-in centre, soup kitchen •orVolunteer food bank

Play Santa – buy an extra present; maybe toiletries, chocolates or a warm jumper – and drop in to your local church or homeless shelter Look local – check up on elderly neighbours who •may be lonely at this time of year, and invite them to share your celebrations Don’t forget pets – animal charities get inundated •around Christmas time, so spare blankets, tinned food or an hour or two of your spare time are all valuable to them And remember, the giving can continue after the celebrations are over – those unwanted presents can go to the charity shop, Christmas jumpers are just as cosy in January so pop them in the clothing bank, and why not make a New Year’s resolution to make 2016 a more charitable one.

The Garden in DECEMBER With October and November ridiculously mild, there must be a shock coming in the form of a cold snap. However a hard winter cannot be predicted yet, and a mild one is still on the cards. A hard frost is useful to kill off a few bugs and pests, and of cause some snow goes down a treat with the kids, and a few adults as well! Jobs in the Garden The longer the frosts hold off, the more damage will be done by a sudden severe freeze-up. Be prepared to move under

protection the less hardy subjects if they are in moveable containers. Plants staying in the ground can be protected in various ways; best protection is from ‘double glazing’ using whatever material is available, and removing it as soon as temperatures lift.

Vegetable Garden If conditions allow, now is ideal for digging the plot and incorporating well rotted manure or compost. The winter frosts will break up clods, particularly useful with a heavy clay soil.

The Garden in DECEMB Planting People often ask ‘when is the best time to plant?’ or ‘is it safe to plant in the winter?’ The answer is its fine to plant hardy subjects in the coldest months, if conditions allow. Hedging, trees, shrubs, climbers and even the tougher herbaceous plants are going in the ground now.

Tree suggestions Choosing a small garden tree is often a difficult one. If it’s your only tree, you want it to be multi-talented. Rowans are noted for their berries and fine foliage. Try the rare Sorbus Sargentiana, a compact tree with big

bunches of scarlet berries(see pictured left), fine russeted autumn leaves and unusual fat red sticky buds in winter. Trees with attractive bark can be a delight in the winter months. More species are grown as multi-stems to show off the trunks and maintaining this shape keeps the tree more compact. White barked birch look great, as do Thibetan cherry which has translucent amber peeling bark, terrific with the winter sun behind (Prunus serrula Thibetica.) Looking Good In gloomy winter weather, colour is essential,

Based on the classic 1992 children’s book by Jill Tomlinson, this funny, reassuring tale about Plop, the baby Barn Owl and his fear of darkness has been created especially for small people aged 3 to 7 years (and grown-ups who sleep with the big light on!).

Christmas Tree Festival Stowe Parish Church is being transformed into a winter wonderland for its first ever Christmas Tree Festival this month. Everyone is welcome to come and see wondrously decorated Christmas trees, hear a host of musical events, and enjoy festive refreshments. Running 10-13 December, The Christmas Tree Festival includes a return visit to Stowe by the masters of swing Rance’s Rockin’ Chair on 12 December 7.30pm. They will have your feet tapping to a uniquely arranged

Brackley Town Exhilarating FA Cup As we go to press Brackley Town are in the middle of an exhilarating FA Cup run that has brought national attention once again to the St James Park club. A first round tie at home against Division Two Newport County AFC brought an all-ticket crowd of over 1700 to Brackley with the kick-off switched to Sunday for the television cameras. A miraculous added time equaliser earned the Saints a replay and extensive coverage on the BBC and other news and sport outlets. The razzamatazz and excitement of the FA Cup cannot have been in new manager Kevin Wilkin’s mind when he took charge two months ago but he has overseen the charge in the cup while the battle for league points at the wrong end of the table has been on hold with several league fixtures cancelled. Wilkin has brought in several new faces to the squad he inherited. The experienced Joe Clarke from Kidderminster Harriers has made an impact in midfield and several young

loan signings have featured regularly. The cup run has brought much needed additional revenue to the club alongside the publicity. Asa two seasons ago when the club reached the second round of the FA Cup and invested the proceeds in some outstanding new facilities at St James Park, the club will again look to invest the TV money in long term development projects that will take the club forward and help to sustain it in harder times. For the forthcoming fixtures and club news visit the Brackley Town FC website.
