Red cars top the drop zone league It may leave motorists seeing red, but it seems that the colour of your car is responsible for how attractive it is to birds. Bright red cars are a magnet for more bird droppings than vehicles of any other colour while green cars are most likely to escape from the unwelcome attentions of our feathery friends. A study recorded the frequency that birds left their mark on cars in five cities around the UK and found green cars suffer least, followed by silver, while white vehicles escaped more often than black in analysis of 1,140 cars in Brighton, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Bristol. Drivers were also asked how quickly they removed the offending evidence. Only 17% - one in six - wipe off deposits as soon as they spot them, 20% take action within a couple of days while 55% wait until the next wash. The remaining eight per cent never wash their cars or leave it to someone else. But as well as being unsightly, insurance industry figures show bird droppings can be an expensive problem and estimate the damage caused by poop-stained paintwork costs motorists £57m a year in unnecessary repairs. A car cleaning expert says: "This research does have a serious side because the problem annoys drivers, causes damaged paintwork and affects the value of vehicles. To protect your bodywork from damage, droppings should be carefully cleaned off as soon as possible."

A healthy break We all know that eating your greens, drinking plenty of water and taking regular exercise are good for us. But did you know that your daily coffee break at work could be doing your health more good than you realise? If so then you're not alone as the latest market research suggests that current perceptions about coffee in the UK are completely off the boil. But the truth is that your regular cup of coffee can count as part of your daily fluid intake and can help protect you against an array of diseases. There are many misconceptions about coffee. For example, 61 per cent of us don't even realise that it can count toward our daily fluid intake. Its health benefits are also unknown, as 84 per cent of us don't know that coffee consumption has been shown to protect against cognitive decline and certain other neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Not only this but coffee may protect against the development of type-two diabetes and 74 per cent of us have no idea. GP at Richford Gate Medical Practice Dr Sarah Jarvis says: "We need to be aware that there are many misconceptions about coffee that are simply not true. There is strong scientific evidence to suggest that moderate coffee consumption (four to five cups per day) may confer a variety of health benefits and should be enjoyed when we take our breaks in the day."

As well as being enjoyable, and safe in moderation, caffeine can increase your levels of alertness, helping you to stay on top form when you are at your desk or in that all-important meeting. Going for that well earned coffee break should be part of our daily routine, yet, 63 per cent of us have tried to reduce the number of cups we drink each day because of myths about coffee. We have had remarkably good spring for growing, with warmish spells but never dry for too long before some decent rainfall arrives. Will last summer's hot July and August repeat itself this year? Only time will tell!

Brilliant roses So many varieties will repeat flower, after their first flush in June. Dead-heading will help to encourage this and also keeps the plant neat and tidy. Trim the shoot back to a leaf axil as this will avoid leaving stubs of stems to go brown. Species roses that flower just once can be left to show off their hips. A fine English Rose is Falstaff, with superb rich crimson rosettes (see pic) Or

try a classic Hybrid Tea rose with perfect blooms, such as Silver Anniversary â&#x20AC;&#x201C; displaying the most exquisite white flowers.

Shrubs that have already flowered in the last couple of months, should be pruned. Most hardy perennials are also improved by pruning. Many hardy geraniums, for instance, if the stems are flopping and the flowers are going over, the simplest thing is to shear them off and hopefully you will see a second flush coming through.

Autumn salads can be sown now, such as lambs lettuce and rocket. Spring cabbage can be sown at intervals of seven to ten days and best covered with fleece to protect from pigeons and flea beetle.
