SUMMER HOLIDAYS When it comes to the summer holidays, organisation is the key to successfully planning and packing for a trip. So once everything has been ticked off the shopping list, what next? Leading online luggage retailers, Sportsdirect.com, offers up some top tips for making the most of any type of suitcase, for any type of holiday. Save room with miniatures. People rarely need a full bottle of shower gel when travelling abroad for less than a week; save room in the case by substituting family-sized bottles for miniature versions which can be easily rolled up in socks, or packed tightly into a compartment. Roll instead of fold. Although the majority of UK holidaymakers prefer to fold their clothes, rolling allows for more items to be packed into even the smallest of cases, and also prevent some items from cont pg14

Shoeboxes can be sacrificed; packing shoes and toiletries separately rather than altogether in packaging will not only allow extra room for essentials, but smaller items- or items which can be worn creased such as underwear and socks, can be stuffed into shoes and wrapped up around bottles (handy for providing extra packaging for perfume bottles or make up). WELCOME TO VISITORS FROM PAVI
It was the weekend of the 20th June 2014 and
the Lower Town Hall of Brackley echoed to the sound of French, English and a fair bit of “franglais” as the Town Mayor, Councillor Elaine Wiltshire, together with members and friends of the Brackley European Association (the BEA), welcomed visitors from Brackley’s twinning partner in France. The weekend was a huge
success, beginning with a tea and homemade cakes reception and concluding with a fond farewell at the unearthly hour of 8.15 on Monday morning! In between there were convivial meals at the houses of the English hosts and on the Saturday evening, a more formal dinner for the whole group with magical (in every sense of the word) entertainment being provided by Douglas Maddy. During the day, fascinating visits had been organised to Warwick - to Lord Leycester’s Hospital whose history bears close comparison with that of Brackley’s own Norman Hospital now owned by Magdalen College school; to Hill Close Gardens, rare survivals of gardens once common to all big towns, bought and used by townsfolk from Medieval times to escape the hot, crowded and smelly town centres where they all lived and worked; to a delightful private garden beneath the walls of the castle on the banks of the River Avon and back in Brackley, the obligatory visits to the Antiques Warehouse and Waitrose!

ILLONS-SOUS-BOIS! Once again, the BEA has fulfilled its commitment to sustain and promote the town’s official twinning links and to perpetuate cordial relations with two of our European neighbours. This commitment is enshrined in the Charter on display in the Town Hall which is regularly renewed by the Town Council. We should make it clear that the twinning movement operates completely separately from the EU. The BEA receives a small grant from the Town Council to assist with the work that it undertakes on the Council’s behalf but all the other expenses incurred in entertaining our twinning partners and returning their visits, are met in full by members of the Association. To this end, the Association will, on occasions, use its regular monthly meeting as a fundraising opportunity. The weekend was a huge success with a tea and homemade cakes reception on Friday night, a formal dinner on Saturday night and visits to places of historic interest in Warwick and, of course, to Brackley’s own Antiques Warehouse and Waitrose. And the sun shone!!

GD Cooper Architectural is uniquely able to offer an inclusive design solution for all. GD Cooper Architectural Services provide a design and planning service producing architectural drawings for planning applications, building control and for general renovations and home adaptions. I have been involved in the construction industry since leaving school in 1988, when I trained as a plumber. An accident at work in 2003 left me needing to use a wheelchair and my career had to change direction. A three year degree course in Architectural Technology has allowed me to utilize the wealth of experience built up over the years. This experience along with a first class degree and two other C.A.D qualifications enables me to approach a client’s project from both a practical and a technical perspective.

Moving home with your cat
During all the last minute arrangements you have to make when moving house it is just possible that your cat's welfare might not be top of your priority list. Between signing contracts, organising removal firms and trying to keep everyday life ticking over in the meantime, it's difficult to find time for the quieter family members. But a little thought put in advance can save you - and your pet - lots of trauma when it comes to upping sticks and flitting to a new home. Experts at Britannia Movers International, the UK's leading independent removal firm, have some sound advice to keep your cat happy on moving day and make sure he doesn't scarper off back to the old house as soon as you arrive at your new pad. Your cat could easily become distressed when a team of removal men arrive and start shifting everything with which he is familiar. So before the boys arrive, put Tiddles in a cat carrier, with a little food, in the smallest bedroom in the house and put a notice on the door telling the crew to leave that room until last. If your cat is of a nervous disposition, you could use a plug in pheromone diffuser - such as Feliway - in the room to help him relax. Don't feed your cat just before you leave the house. Take the cat out of his temporaryconfinement to let the movers finish the job. Then put the cat carrier securely in your car ready for the journey. Don't let him travel in the removal van. Although there have been many stories of stowaways, it's not a great idea for either the cat or the furniture. If you have moved locally it's possible
that your cat will return to his old hunting grounds and follow the trails back to the original house. If you think this is likely, tell the new occupants and ask them to call you if he turns up. Tell them not to feed him - no matter how fed up he looks! Once you have your cat ensconced in your new home - don't let him or her outside for at a fortnight. Help him to feel secure by rubbing a soft cloth around his face, then spreading the scent around the house by rubbing the cloth on doorways and furniture. When you do let him venture out, open the door and let him choose to explore - don't carry him. Don't feed him before he goes: if he's hungry he won't stray far. Leave the door open so he can easily get back in when he's ready. Chase any strange cats away - he'll need lots of help to establish his territory in the new area. A water spray is the method recommended by animal sanctuaries. Try to maintain the same routine you had at the old house. Make sure he has an identification collar with your phone number on and, if he's not microchipped, now's the time to do it. Moving house can be a stressful time for everybody. Follow these guidelines and you will help make sure it's as easy as it can be for your feline friend.

With July turning hot and not so much rain recently, we should be expecting a hot summer again. Any water sources can dry up rapidly so we should keep ponds topped up, or if you have no water feature, have a source of fresh water for wild life.
Trim those hedges
Shrubs that tend to ‘legginess’ as they age are often helped with some pruning at this time. Lavenders are particularly suitable: after flowering, shear them over to remove the flower stems and some of the new growth. If they are also trimmed at the end of winter then they will be rejuvenated and less likely to get straggly. If your Lavenders are already old and woody with bare
centres, hard pruning is unlikely to work so it’s time to replace them. You may want to take cuttings if it is a special treasured variety.

Many deciduous hedges are best pruned by late August. Some evergreens and conifers will put on a little growth after this but still look good through autumn and winter.
Looking good
Late summer sees many groups of flowering plants come into their own. Penstemmons are great long-flowering semievergreen perennials. Deadhead them regularly and they should flower into late autumn. Colours range from white to darkest purple with pinks, lilacs and reds (see pic above.) Another perennial worth considering is Bergamot or Bee-Balm. Vigorous and
clump-forming they produce whorls of red flowers (other colours also available) at the top of tall stems (see right pic). Bumblebees love them for their nectar. Hydrangeas are a classic group of late flowering shrubs. Mop-heads and lace-caps are traditional choices but how about one of the new varieties of Hydrangea paniculata? Their conical heads come in shades of white, cream and light green, often fading to pinkish-red as the flowers age. Give them a little space and ideally light shade for best effect. If you have a glut of beans ready, they are well worth freezing now, and will be very useful for the winter table. Onions will be ready when the foliage collapses. Ease them out of the ground and allow them to thoroughly dry before storing.
