Choosing a window and conservatory company Window and conservatory companies often get a bad press. Pushy salespeople and silly price bargaining are a common experience for many. However, there are trusted, established companies out there. It’s a case of shopping around to find them. If you are planning to replace your windows or doors, or add an extra room to your house with a new conservatory or garden room, take some time to think about your steps carefully. After all, it’s your home, your investment, and your money. Consider what you need and are hoping to achieve with the improvement. In the case of windows it could be reducing heat loss. If that is the case, think about the energy rating of the glass. Shop around for the businesses that are offering what you need. If they have a showroom, take time out to visit. It will give you a much better feel for the products if
you can seem them in-situ. Ask to see testimonials and letters from past customers. Get quotes from a few different companies. State clearly to them your requirements, and ask them to quote their best price. Appraise each one. Was the salesman knowledgeable about the products? Was he too pushy, trying to get you to commit there and then? Were they offering ‘A’ energy rated windows as standard? What after-care service and guarantees did they offer? Did the business have trade accreditations? When you make your final decision, yes, still consider price, but remember that old adage. If something seems too good to be true, it more than likely is.

Be Your Own Boss! In the current economic climate, many people are realising the profitability of their own talents and using their hobbies and interests to make a little more money. Whether it’s a top-up to your day job, or a whole new venture for the whole working week, becoming self-employed is increasingly popular and can be an excellent way to boost your income and fit work around other commitments.

There are just a few simple steps to becoming your own boss: •Do some research. Look at what is currently available in your area, prices and other options, and see if you can do the job cheaper & better – a sure fire winner with customers! •Approach your bank and ask about business banking. Particularly important if you’re going to need a start-up loan. •Choose an accountant and find out what records you need to keep for the new business and how they can help you keep on top of the paperwork and forms! Many accountants will do your VAT and book-keeping for you, leaving you free to run your business free from the worry of figures. •Sort out communications – you’ll need a landline, mobile and email address, and preferably a website where people can see what you do. If they can’t get hold of you, they’ll quite possibly go to another trader, so make sure they can! •Choose your logo, colour scheme, uniform........think about getting business stationery printed; letterheads and business cards look professional. •Liability insurance – particularly important if you work in customers’ homes or gardens or care for their children or pets. •Advertise! Let people know who you are and what you’re doing. Local magazines are a great place to get noticed and let your potential customers find you. Leaflets work well too – distributed door to door in your target area. •Register online with HMRC and let them know you’ve become self-employed, as soon as possible. •Go for it! If you love what you do and take pride in your work, the only limit is the time you have available. Many parents are self employed to enable them to have time with their children, so make sure the business doesn’t take over. •If you need more free time and business is booming, consider taking on an employee or two. Your accountant can advise on PAYE and payroll and help you manage all the other issues that come with being someone else’s boss!

Jubilee Celebration Concert Brackley Male Voice Choir are pleased to announce their Jubilee Celebration Concert which will take place on Monday 4th June at Magdalen College School Sports field, starting at 7:00pm. (gates open at 6.00p.m.) This will be an open air concert and you are encouraged to bring a picnic and drinks along (table, chairs and chandeliers are optional!). Performing alongside the BMVC will be Trevor Jones (Saxophone), Kayleigh Manley (Soprano) and Nicola Harrison (mezzo-soprano), Jenny Hubble (Cello), Gabriel Furse (Trumpet), Tess Jones and Jean Parker (soloists and duet ), Jonathon Heslop (Tenor) and Jacob Stone (piano soloist and accompaniment). A varied program of music is guaranteed and aaudience participation will be encouraged on some songs!!

Don’t Drive Tired! With longer holiday driving and warmer weather during the summer months, falling asleep at the wheel of a car is a real hazard. Dozing off while driving is a very common occurrence but there are steps you can take to avoid the risk. Regularly changing body position is one way to keep yourself alert. Increasing the circulation will kick start the body from its increasingly relaxed state. Play music and sing along. Keeping the brain active is a good way to stay awake so listening to a talking book or a chat show on a radio station can be entertaining and a safety measure. Open the windows to allow fresh air into the car. Having regular snacks will help you to maintain your blood-sugar level and prevent energy levels from dropping. Don’t eat too much though as your body tends to relax ten minutes or so after food. If you feel your concentration wane or your eyelids grow heavy, pull over as soon as it is safe to do so. Hand over the driving to a qualified passenger pull into a service station or hotel for some rest. Jen Oakton

Divine Therapy Country Retreat We at Divine Therapy have always had a passion for the countryside, we respect the land that grows the plants we use for our essential oils. When we were offered the opportunity of using the Granary barn as our country retreat, surrounded by 500 acres of Winter Wheat, Oilseed Rape and Linseed with a flock of sheep in permanent pastures, we thought it would be an inspirational, peaceful and perfect place to learn and experience about massage and aromatherapy. We are excited to be able to offer a series of workshops and treatment days at our venue, Greatworth Hall. We begin with our Fathers Day Special, Dads Baby Massage class, which will run on 16th of June. While parents enjoy fresh coffee and patisseries, Dads will learn all about baby massage and mums will enjoy luxurious beauty treatments. On 30th June we will be running an ‘Introduction to Aromatherapy’ workshop. In a tranquil and natural location we will learn about the power and healing that essential oils can provide.

We will be teaching some basic massage skills to enable you to practise on family and friends, relaxation techniques and how aromatherapy can enhance these techniques, plus lots more. Foreign Spending Options If you are travelling abroad this summer, you’ll need to make some decisions about how you’ll do your spending. Here’s a quick guide to the various options. Credit and debit cards are very useful, though it is essential to take time to find a card that has been designed for overseas spending otherwise the hefty transaction fees and poor rates could be a nasty shock. Some websites offer a credit card comparison service and this is a great place to start your investigation. Prepaid currency cards are a safer alternative to using credit or debit cards. You load a set amount of money onto the card and then use it in the same way as a debit card. One benefit is that a pre-paid card can be replaced should it become lost but, if you are considering this option, look

out for unexpected application fees and other charges and check the exchange rates offered as they usually do not represent particularly good value. An advantage of taking cash is that you won’t be subject to fluctuations in the exchange rate so your holiday can’t get any more expensive if the exchange rate is poor. Do not wait until the last minute to order your holiday cash as you’ll miss out on the best deals. Shop around for the best rate and order online for home delivery or airport collection. Travellers’ cheques are less popular now than in the past. They can be useful if you do not want to use cards but would also rather not carry cash. You can get travellers’ cheques replaced so long as you keep a careful record of their numbers. However, commission fees on travellers’ cheques can be excessive and when cashing the cheque, you may be subject to an additional charge. Finding somewhere to cash your travellers’ cheque may be a problem and some countries do not accept them at all. Do your research first!

Stress-free Holiday Packing Do you pack too much or not enough? Holiday packing can mean a stressful start to your break but follow this advice to keep packing hell at bay. Start with a suitable suitcase. Too small and it’ll be stuffed and too large has its own problems. Find a case with wheels and a collapsible handle to protect your back. Lay out the items you plan to take then ask yourself if you really need each one? Be ruthless and travel light, it’s surprisingly refreshing! Leave a little room to fill with souvenirs or shopping bargains on your return trip. Roll clothes rather than lay them flat or use tissue paper when folding. Do this and avoid overpacking to end up with fewer creases at the other end. Buy special lightweight towels to save on space or use vacuum bags to shrink your towel to a manageable size.

Holiday Pets Taking your pet on a foreign holiday takes a great deal of forward planning. From January 1st 2012, the UK brought in the Pet Travel Scheme which allows dogs and cats to enter the UK from any country in the world without quarantine provided they meet the rules of the scheme. These rules differ slightly depending on where you are travelling from. To give you an idea, to bring a dog into the UK from the EU, the following rules apply: 1.Your pet must be microchipped. 2.Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies and boosters must be kept up to date. There are no exceptions to this rule. 3.You must get pet travel documentation i.e. an EU pet passport. 4.Dogs must be treated for tapeworm 1-5 days before entry into the UK. 5.You must arrange for your animal to travel with an approved transport company. The return journey must be booked before you leave the UK. If you are travelling with other pets, re-entering the UK from another area, or require further information, visit www.defra.gov.uk. The Garden in June

Watch out it may be summer soon! Well the dry weather finally broke with a vengeance and after two relatively dry years, particularly winters, we have had enough rain to fill the water butts several times over. Colours are superb and growth is lush and plentiful. So why not add some extra Jubilee colour this month and celebrate in style. Looking Good The large flowered Clematis come into their own this month. For instance the variety ’Congratulations’ (see pic) has sensational frilly pink and white petals. Ideally planted with roots in the shade, they need to grow into the sun, on a wall or fence, to flower at their best. Plant a few inches deeper than normal to discourage ‘clematis wilt’. Add plenty of good compost to the back fill.
Clematis viticella varieties are more resistant to this disease and flower later into the autumn. Add winter and spring flowering species and you have a year round display. You can’t talk about June flowers without mentioning roses which are at their finest this month. So many forms and varieties to include but of the myriad, I have chosen the very popular ‘English Rose’ Gertrude Jekyll (see pic). This lovely rich pink form has shapely buds, which open to large full many petalled flowers in the old fashioned style. A complete contrast is the variety Norfolk (see pic). This low bushy variety makes some good ground cover. It will spread about a metre wide and produces an abundance of dainty bright yellow, cont page 42

chance to seed or establish saves so much work at a later date. Managing your plants is an on going job. Many different plants benefit from deadheading, i.e. pruning flower heads as they fade and petals fall. Early flowering shrubs can be pruned now, to maximise the displays next spring, on a well shaped plant. Spring bulbs should be long over now and foliage can be safely cut back. Hellebores are best tidied up by removing all old leaves and flower stems, which should reduce re-infection with black spot.
