Hay Fever Help Hay fever season is well and truly underway. Despite its name, hay fever has nothing to do with hay or fever – apparently an early physician called it this because he began sneezing every time he entered a hay barn! In fact, hay fever is a form of allergic rhinitis caused by plant pollen or spores. Alongside inflammation of the nasal lining, the sinuses, throat and eyes are commonly affected. For many, the common symptoms of itchy eyes, a runny or blocked nose, and sneezing are mild. However, for those severely affected by pollen, symptoms can interfere with work or school and exams, and can affect sleep.

Commonly used treatments include antihistamine tablets, nasal sprays, and eye drops however, if these aren’t working so well for you this season, here’s a few other ideas to try:

• Qu-Chi Acupressure Band. This band stimulates an acupressure point near the elbow and is said to reduce breathing problems and runny eyes and nose symptoms associated with hayfever.

• Aromatherapy – successful easing of various symptoms is widely reported.

If you rely on over the counter medicines to relieve your hayfever symptoms, you may find that you can get your items for less with a prescription from your doctor. For example, a 60 dose nasal spray costs around £6.50 but you can get a much larger size bottle of the same medicine for the price of a prescription. Ask your pharmacist for more information.

• Use Vaseline on the inside of your nostrils to prevent pollen from entering your nose. • Take a spoonful of locally produced honey every day and eat onions (both believed to help to ward off hay fever). • Acupuncture, reflexology, homeopathy – not proved to relieve hay fever but anecdotal evidence is compelling.

Father’s Day is a long standing tradition in this country – a day dedicated to honouring the fathers in your life (your father, grandfather, partner) in a special way. It is suggested that the idea of Father's Day may originate in pagan sun worship as some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Others believe that this special day has simply derived from the American version, celebrated in the US since 1910. We are lucky to have some fantastic gift opportunities in the local area. Mill Art Exhibition The charity CAFE (Creative Activities for Elderly people) is holding an art exhibition at The Mill Arts Centre, Banbury, to celebrate 10 years of the charity. The art work has all been made by elderly people, in care homes, sheltered housing, or day care centres. The art work is bright and colourful and includes large group collages, as well as smaller items such as decorated ceramics, silk necklaces, clay work and salt dough. The exhibition is open from Wednesday 29th May until Tuesday 25th June during normal Mill opening hours. There is free entry and disabled access.

After last summer of repeatedly wet weather, we surely deserve a warm one especially as spring was foreshortened by an endless winter. With decent water table levels and a little sunshine, we could expect good growth and great displays of flower.

Roses are stunning at this time but need a little work to get the best from them. A good thick mulch and watering in dry spells will help. Dead heading the fading blooms will encourage new bud formation. The HT Rose Silver Aniversary has exquisite full blooms of white (see pic.) A very useful evergreen ground cover plant that also gives bright displays of blue flowers is Campanula poscharskyana (see pic) Sun or light shade it will clothe the ground.

Kitchen garden

Keep sowing salad plants to give a succession of food. Plant out beans: runners will need wigwams or a row of canes. Out-door tomatoes can go in a sunny spot, around eighteen inches apart.

Remarkable First Season

A remarkable first season in the Conference North saw Brackley Town finish in third spot behind Chester and Guiseley, thus qualifying for the end of season play-offs – a stunning achievement. In the two-legged semi-final Brackley travelled to Altrincham for the midweek first leg. Media interest was huge with local BBC radio stations covering the Saints big play-off games impressively including live commentary. A narrow defeat from the first leg brought out the very best from Jon Brady’s side in the return home leg and a convincing 3-0 win took them through to meet former league side FC Halifax at St James Park in a one-off final. A sell-out crowd of 2600 endured a rain-soaked afternoon to support their team in this showdown. The sides had played out two goal-less draws earlier in the season and so it was no surprise that goal chances were at a premium. The dead-lock was broken late in the second half as FC Halifax, The Shaymen, grabbed the vital goal and held out to claim the game and the prized promotion spot.

As the Halifax players and supporters celebrated, Saints fans paid tribute to their team at the end of a simply sensational season. A football season that began in glorious sunshine in August finally drew its last breath in teeming rain as 1000 Halifax supporters headed home up the M1 and Saints reflected on the ultimate disappointment yet overall satisfaction at an amazing debut in top-flight football. The team now takes a short break before preseason training begins, the fixtures are published and the round-about of a new season begins all over again. Congratulations to Brackley Town and good luck for the new season! We have a team to be proud of!
