The longest running, most effective form of advertising door to door locally according to advertisers. 6

The weather is getting warmer (we hope!) and there’s a real buzz around Brackley. There are loads of community events taking place over the coming months – Brackley Carnival, the Soap Box Derby, Jubilee events, the Music Festival, Beer Festival, and the Festival of Motorcycling... there really is something for everyone and plenty going on for all members of the family to enjoy! Smaller community groups have also been busy recently, organising special events for Brackley residents. Brackley Youth Club hosted a fantastic youth event a few weeks back. A skate park, dance workshop, karaoke, and laser quest were just some of the wonderful free activities laid on for the young people of Brackley. Brackley Library has put together some great events for local children and some excellent informal craft clubs for adults. Drop in to find out more about upcoming dates. If you would like to advertise your local event in Brackley In Business, please don’t hesitate to drop us an email. (see page 3) We’re very happy to help! Advertising remains a hugely important part of your business, even more so when times are tough. If potential customers don’t know you exist or what you can offer to them, how will they know to use you?

Tom’s Olympic Dance The tension is building as the opening ceremony of the London Olympics 2012 gets ever closer. However, one Brackley man has found a way to mark the occasion with the drama it deserves! Tom Clare, known to many as a member of Brackley Morris Men, has embarked on a 2000 mile dance from Olympia to the London Olympic stadium and has every intention of arriving just in time. In February 2011, Tom danced 120 miles from London to Norwich to recreate the footsteps of Shakespeare’s fool, Will Kempe. This latest challenge is part of Tom’s big plans to dance around the world – a personal challenge and a way to raise money for charities. The Olympic Dance Marathon will raise funds for Mind, the leading mental health charity for England and Wales. If you want to show support to Tom and make a donation, visit his website www.lifestreamfrequency.org/olympicdance.htm Jen Oakton

Stroll those blues away! If the unpredictable weather, money worries or a hectic lifestyle is getting you down, take a few moments out of your day to go for a stroll, you’ll feel better for it! So says a new report, which looked into the beneficial effects of a regular brisk walk on a wide range of people who were suffering from depressive symptoms. Walking several times a week, for up to an hour, with a group of friends seemed to achieve the most benefit for people with mild to moderate depression, but any walking was of some benefit. So, now the weather is sure to improve – or at least get a little warmer – the days are lengthening and there is so much wildlife to get out and look at, going for a stroll is sure to benefit both body and mind. Olympic Torch to pass near you! According to official figures, the Olympic Flame will pass within 10 miles of 95% of people in the UK. 8000 people will act as Torchbearers, carrying the Flame through 1000 cities, towns, and villages on a 70-day Torch Relay in the run up to the Olympic Games. The Relay will begin on 19th May and end in the new Olympic Stadium in London on 27th July for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony. Members of the public are encouraged to ‘line the streets’ to show support for the Torch Relay. If you want to catch a glimpse of the Olympic Torch as it passes through our area, here are the dates and places you need to know. On Monday 2nd July, the Olympic Torch can be seen in Northampton. Fake that Tan If you aren’t off to sunnier climes this year but still want that sunkissed look, why not consider faking it?! A fake tan does not have to mean you’ll turn a nasty looking shade of orange. If used correctly, sunless tanning products can give you a natural looking tan. If you are applying the product yourself, here are some hints to give you the best results. Exfoliate! Get rid of excess dead skin cells by exfoliating thoroughly first. Shave your legs too. Go gently! Use the product lightly and evenly over your body. Have a very light touch on dry skin and on thicker areas of skin such as elbows, knees and ankles. Get help! Ask someone to help you apply fake tan to the difficult to reach spots.

PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING

PAT THOMPSON

MA in Psychotherapy and Counselling UKCP Registered Psychotherapist, MBACP.

Counselling and psychotherapy often work with similar emotional difficulties such as:

DEPRESSION, ABUSE, LOW SELF ESTEEM, LACK OF IDENTITY AND DIRECTION, RELATIONSHIP

PROBLEMS, PHOBIAS, EATING DISORDERS, LOSS, BEREAVEMENT, OBSESSIONAL BEHAVIOUR,

TO NAME A FEW... Psychotherapy works at a much deeper level within the core of the personality, and consequently offers a resolution to more entrenched and resistant behaviour patterns than shorter term work. Having run a private practice in this area for over 15 years I regularly see new patients for psychotherapy following shorter term treatment(s). If you feel that your emotional problems are deeper seated then maybe think about psychotherapy.

Little Oaks Pre School Little Oaks Pre School has been part of the Brackley landscape for over 25 years and many children enjoyed their time with us so much that now that they are Parents themselves they are bringing their own children to us! At Little Oaks we passionately believe that young children learn best by “doing and experiencing” rather than by “watching and being told”. This recently led to a wonderful afternoon spent learning Maths up a tree! As a county centre of good practice for the outdoor leaning environment our children have lots of opportunities

to develop their climbing skills and have the confidence and the muscle control to tackle challenges that some other children of their age may find daunting. As these children scrambled, climbed and swung staff were able to record lots of talk about being “higher” “lower” “bigger” “smaller”. We believe that in later years as children begin to explore more abstract concepts they will remember that afternoon spent up a tree at Little Oaks and what it is actually like to be “taller” than someone else….and if they don’t they will definitely remember having a lot of fun!

Send an e-card The cost of a stamp seems ridiculously high all of a sudden. There are some things that just can’t be sent in any other way but there is a great alternative to sending a greetings card by Royal Mail. An e-card is similar to a postcard or a greeting card but it’s digitally created and sent over the Internet, usually by e-mail or via text message. Choosing a digital card gives the sender many more options than a traditional greetings card. You can personalise the image by adding text, a photo or video or send a card containing an animation or interactive game. The recipient usually receives an email to let them know a card has been sent and the card can then be viewed over the Internet and saved to the recipient’s own computer. Not only does this save you the price of the stamp but it’s an environmentally friendly option too. There are plenty of online e-card stores. Many offer free e-cards – try www.hallmark.co.uk/ecards or www.disney.co.uk/disney-create/ecards/ while others charge an annual subscription – try www.jacquielawson.com

Hosepipe Ban in Force Since April 5th, domestic customers of Anglian Water have had a hosepipe ban in place. This measure was taken in response to the serious drought situation across the region. As a hosepipe can use up to 1000 litres of water in just an hour (more than the average household uses in a whole day!), the hosepipe ban should save millions of litres of water. Some people are confused as to exactly what is and isn’t allowed during the hosepipe ban. Here’s a quick guide: During the hosepipe ban, you MUST NOT use a hosepipe to: Water your garden – flowers, hanging baskets, lawn, park, or allotment UNLESS you are a Blue Badge holder. Fill paddling pools or domestic swimming pools.

Mess around with water e.g. water fights or spraying the kids! Clean your windows, walls, paths or patios. A registered business is allowed to do so however. Wash your private car or boat. Fill or maintain an ornamental pond or fountain UNLESS these contain fish or other aquatic animals. Customers who ignore the hosepipe ban could be fined up to £1000. If you’re not sure if the hosepipe ban applies to you, tap your postcode into the checker at Anglian Water’s website. You can also find advice regarding exemptions and a range of special deals on there to help you save water and cope with the hosepipe ban. If you are a keen gardener and a customer of Anglian Water, you can apply for a free ‘garden water saving’ kit. It contains water storing crystals and mats as well as useful RHS information on saving water in the garden and choosing drought tolerant plants. Visit www.anglianwater.co.uk to find out more and to apply for your free kit.

Brackley European Association Thanks Supporters Well, March turned out to be a great month for socialising and fundraising! Our taste buds were titillated with generous portions of a very tasty lasagne, prepared by Anita and her talented family at the Bistro and Quiz Evening and our intellects stimulated as we struggled to recall obscure definitions – okay, would you know what was the collective noun for a group of nightingales? The coffee morning was a great success, standing room only for most of the morning as people came for coffee and stayed to watch the fascinating film show set up by Mike Chambers, to browse the book stall, to sample the delicious cakes homemade by BEA members and to anticipate the possibility of winning one of the excellent raffle prizes generously donated by BEA members, Waitrose, Tesco, Budgens and the Co-op; the Hair Gallery and the Photographic

Both events were held at the Lower Town Hall and graced by the presence of our charming Mayor, Theo Hayward, and the success of both was entirely due to the hard work of members of the BEA and the support and generosity of their friends in Brackley and the surrounding district. The monies raised will be used enthusiastically to promote and enhance the twinning experience of the towns of Brackley, Pavillons-sous-Bois and Montabaur. Let Coeliacs Eat Cake! Coeliac Awareness Week is 14th – 20th May. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where the gluten found in wheat, barley and rye causes damage to the gut that can only be prevented by lifelong avoidance of gluten. That rules out all normal bread, pasta, biscuits and cakes. Luckily, most supermarkets now have a good range of “Free From” products. However, they are often significantly more expensive than their gluten containing equivalents, and to be honest, not always that convincing! The biggest challenge for most coeliacs is eating out. Knowing how difficult it can sometimes be to find really decent gluten free food, whenever I find a great new product or new place to eat out, the first thing I want to do is spread the word. With this in mind, I set up the Facebook group

A group of us get together regularly at the Courtyard Coffee Shop, where there is always a good gluten free selection of sandwiches, jacket potatoes, salads and most importantly: cake! Overall, most places can usually adapt something on the menu to be suitable and it is always helpful to ring in advance to see what they can do. Restaurants: remember that by providing clearly labelled gluten free options and training your staff in awareness you will be gaining not only our custom, but those dining with us as well! Keep the Cats Away It can be really annoying to find cat mess in your own back garden, and even more so when you don’t own a cat. Here are some ideas for keeping them away: Fill some small plastic bottles with water and place around the garden. Cats seem to dislike the light reflecting off the water. Find a scent that the cat dislikes and spray onto cloths to leave around the garden. Try lemon grass or citronella oil or sprinkle a mix of ground black pepper and chilli powder. Alternatively scatter citrus peel around the garden. Some plants give off a smell that cats dislike – try Coleus Canina or the herb Rue. Avoid plants that cats particularly like such as mint, Jacob’s Ladder and Valerian. Get your own cat! Plant spiky plants in the areas where cats tend to enter and exit your garden. Keep flowerbeds well watered as cats don’t like wet soil. Jen Oakton

NEWS IN BRIEF – Cybercriminals use Microsoft Windows Cybercriminals use Microsoft Windows. Cybercriminals are now attacking your Windows operating system by displaying fake alerts within My Computer with a bogus window message called “Microsoft Security Alert 2012” and has

found critical process activity on your PC. You will notice red writing beneath folders. This is a new threat to the web which is also categorised a high risk scam. Beware if users click on ‘Remove All’ or ‘Cancel’ button, it will download another virus to steal your contacts and then will phone home to all other contacts to be infected. This is named as the chain scams. Many fraudsters in connection with these viruses can also download banking and password thefts via Trojan viruses. If you notice this scam, immediately shut off your computer and do a full scan with your legitimate security software. Please get in touch with Harvey at Sterngate.it if support is required. Is your antivirus software working properly? Many Internet users rely on antivirus programs to protect themselves from viruses and therefore you now can check the effectiveness of your antivirus software by downloading a virus test file yourself. If you would like to take this handy little test, visit the official “European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research” (Eicar.org) webpage and click ‘Download’ and you will see

a txt or zip file hyperlink file. Be assured, this is NOT a real virus and it is completely harmless and safe to use for test procedures only. The zip file is typically a laboratory test file as a result your antivirus program thinks it is a real virus giving you good results that your software protection is installed correctly and enabled. If you need help with this please get in touch with Harvey Sharman at Sterngate.it Broadband Users – update Couple of months ago we had some editorial on broadband providers upgrading their line to FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) and now all BT customers are being contacted up ' til end of this year as a rollout plan. Here is a secret, if you want to jump the line and put the date forward, contact your provider and mention that the ’FTTC’ work has been completed in Brackley and would like to upgrade your package from 20 to 40meg broadband on the FTTC line as soon as possible. The Garden in May Time for a floral rain dance! The great news for gardeners is you don’t need a hosepipe to be able to garden this summer, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. The hosepipe ban, affecting more than 20 million households, is the strictest ever imposed. Two incredibly dry winters has left the Water Companies no options, especially in our neck of the woods. So, for us gardeners, it’s simply how we water the garden wisely this summer. Remember you can still use watering cans (so make sure you have plenty!), however if you have a water butt then this can be fitted to a seep hose system. You can even buy a water pump for your water butt to help distribute water around the garden to where it is

needed. Micro-irrigation systems with a water pressure reducing connector are permitted under the current ban and these neat set-ups are designed for greenhouses or where you have large numbers of containers to irrigate. You can even use these Micro-irrigation systems with automatic timers so you are applying water even more efficiently, perhaps through the night so avoiding unnecessary evaporation. You need to be planting clever this summer... working in one of the water –retaining gel products, sometimes called water storing gels, would be useful on all your plantings, including those composts used for hanging baskets and patio planters. cont page 42

These clever polymers absorb up to 300 times their weight in water so helping the soil remain moist and allowing the roots to actively move Echinops around the soil where they are added. You still have to add fertiliser, such as Blood, Fish & Bone or perhaps work in one of the slow-release fertilisers like Osmocote, which operate over a much longer period of time and are controlled by soil temperature and soil moisture. No doubt you will have read newspaper news stories suggesting we plant our gardens with drought-tolerant plants; however I must voice a word of warning here as many of these plants are simply not frost hardy. So, whilst they may survive the summer on a cup of water, you’ll be heartily disappointed when they fail to come

through the winter. So, what plants can we establish? Well, here’s a few for starters... Choisya ternate Stipa & Lavender planted together (Mexican orange bush), Dianthus, Euphorbia, Bearded Iris, Echinacea, Echinops, English Lavender (including the popular Lavandula ‘Hidcote’, pictured, with Stipa grass), Helianthemums, Kniphofia (red hot poker), Nepeta x faassenii, ornamental grasses (Carex, Pennisetum and Stipa), Verbascum and Yucca. Finally, there is a group of flowers that positively thrive in dry conditions and in poor soils, which I urge you to sow this month, despite the hose pipe ban. And what are these magical flowers? Well, simply wildflowers. A packet or two of mixed

The Garden in May seeds sprinkled over the soil will germinate in the most difficult of conditions and are great magnets to wildlife, especially bees and butterflies. We’ll be shortly sowing wildflowers at the Garden Centre, so watch this space to see how they fare!

Here are 10 tips to help beat the drought... 1. Grow drought-tolerant plants that don’t need as much help to survive (as listed in the feature). 2. Place saucers under containers so water doesn’t run away which will help reduce the time spent watering. 3. Limit use of hanging baskets and utilise water-storing crystals to reduce the amount of watering needed. 4. When watering it is better to provide a good soaking rather than watering little and often, as this allows the water to seep deep into the soil and encourages plants to grow deeper roots. 5. Avoid watering lawns – they soon green up after rain. 6. Fruit and vegetables usually crop adequately without watering. The quality and quantity however, is improved by watering close to harvest. However, when the leaves are the crop, such as lettuce, the plants should never go short of water.

Watering about two weeks before harvesting is usually sufficient. 7. Mulch in late winter or at actual planting to ‘lock in’ soil moisture and prevent weeds growing. 8. Recycle water from the kitchen and bathroom. Plants can be watered with bath, shower and kitchen water, which is collectively referred to as ‘grey’ water. Soil and potting compost are effective at filtering out contaminants, including soaps and detergents, so there’s no need to worry about using it on your plants. However it is good hygiene practice not to use bath and shower water on edible crops. 9. Remove weeds – they use water that your other plants can soak up. 10. Introduce windbreaks and provide light shade to help reduce water loss on exposed sites. TOP TIP When using a watering can, direct water at only those plants that are most susceptible to dry conditions. If your garden is on a slope, build up a shallow basin of soil around the plants to help enable the water (and rain when it arrives) to seep into the soil and not simply just run off the surface.

Get Your Entry Forms In! Two popular local events have been arranged to become part of Brackley’s Jubilee celebrations in June. The 3rd Brackley & District Running Club Annual 10k Race (otherwise known as the F1 Chicken Run!) will take place on Sunday 3rd June 2012 at 9.30am. The race takes place over mixed terrain and is open to all runners who will be over 15 years old on the race day.

Postal entries must be received by 15th May.

The Brackley Soapbox Derby takes place during the afternoon of 3rd June. 2012 sees this event celebrate its 10th anniversary and the competition is already hotting up with cart building secretly going on in garages all over Brackley (and beyond). Rumour has it that ‘Wally Man’ unfortunately won’t be racing this year so who will pick up the mantle for the daftest, or rather most entertaining outfit?! If you want to take part in this fantastic family event, send in your entry form by Friday 25th May at the latest. Visit www.brackleysoapbox.org to find out more.

Visit www.f1chickenrun.co.uk for more information.
