Mobiles driving moto Mobile phones are now such a part of our lives that for most of us they're the last thing we see at night and the first thing we look at in the morning. Our addictive relationship with the gadget has grown in proportion to the apps we rely on to direct our daily lives - not all of which are to our benefit. The dangers of using a mobile while driving are well documented and do attract a ÂŁ60 fine, three penalty points and higher insurance premiums. Yet new research reveals that despite the practice being illegal since 2003, three quarters of British drivers see others using mobile phones on some or most journeys, while a quarter spot drivers using their mobile on every trip. And it's not just talking that's the problem - some drivers are texting, emailing, Tweeting, updating their social networks or taking photographs on the move. The AA/Populus poll of nearly 21,000 drivers found 42 per cent say they used a hand-held phone in the car even though nearly two thirds admitted it distracted them from driving. Some 20 per cent confessed to texting behind the

orists to distraction steering wheel, four per cent admit to checking emails and two per cent have sent emails or read Twitter or Facebook updates on the move. Another worrying and morbid development is the advent of "digital rubber neckers" - drivers who feel the need to use their phones to film or photograph serious crashes on the motorway, says the motoring organisation. In one incident on the M1 in Northamptonshire, police recorded 80 drivers using their phones or cameras to photograph emergency services carry out a four and a half hour rescue of a woman trapped in her crashed truck. The seriously injured driver was eventually flown by air ambulance to hospital and survived the crash. The police have contacted most of the drivers to warn them about their illegal and irresponsible behaviour but have not brought any prosecutions. Our research shows that some drivers are now using their smart phones for more than talking on the move. It is really not smart to talk, text or tweet on the move. It beggars belief that these macabre motorists should put their lives and others at risk through their lust for twisted metal. So please drive safely.

The summer off-season will see further improvements to the ground and a strengthening of the squad ready for next season. Before then the club hosts its annual presentation and awards event and junior teams complete their fixtures. Henry, a German Pointer, comes often with his cuddly toy, as well as a Springer Spaniel called Pi. He loves his ball and is very good off the lead. All dogs come with their instructions, a CV almost, telling us when to feed, how much, walking routines and whether they can be let off the lead, etc. They also bring with them their beds, food, toys and poo bags, and our home soon becomes their home. It's surprising how quickly they settle. I love hosting and the house feels so empty when we don't have a dog to care for, but l know it won't be long before the next one will be arriving. They enjoy their holiday as much as we enjoy looking after them. So if you love dogs but feel you cannot make the commitment to own one, contact Shirley to become a host family. Carol Edwards

Sunday Jun Now a firm favourite annual event within the town the 2014 Brackley Soapbox Derby will take place on Sunday June 8th on the High Street. From 2.00pm onwards soapboxes will run on the main road down the hill to the finish line at the Market Square car park. In addition to the normal juniors under 15 and adults 15 and over categories this year a new Premier Class is being introduced. This is an unrestricted category for professional builders and hopefully will attract entries from local high tech companies. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for the fastest three in each class and a separate trophy will be presented to the soapbox judged to be the best turned out cart. To underline the popularity of the event entries have already been received from various parts of the country and enthusiastic local soapbox

BRACKLEY The evening of Thursday 27th March saw a gathering of Association members, friends and guests in Brackley Town Hall for a fundraising Bistro and Quiz evening. Our chairman, Anita Robbins, with the assistance of her longsuffering family, had prepared a delicious meal, a german recipe, which was consumed with enthusiasm. It was followed by a slice of cake and a glass of bubbly as a member of the Association, who shall be nameless, was celebrating a significant birthday that very day! Thus fortified and invigorated, the assembled company bent its collective intellects to THE QUIZ. Some teams approached the task in a somewhat ribald frame of mind – one not so sotto voce response to the question “What is the collective noun for a group of crocodiles?” being “A snappet”. But others were more committed

EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION and the prize of bottles of German wine was won in great style by the team led by Caryl Billingham, an erstwhile Mayor of Brackley. The Association meets on the last Thursday of every month in Brackley Town Hall and is open to all residents of the town and its surrounding villages. The April and May meetings will be devoted to the business of preparing to welcome and entertain visitors from our French twinning town of Pavillons sous Bois in June but the 31st July promises to be a fun evening playing Northamptonshire skittles at a nearby hostelry.
