Brackley’s carnival committee is working hard to ensure that this year’s event is a great success, whatever the weather (though the sun has been ordered I’m told!). This year, Carnival takes place on 8th June and the theme is Carnival of Colour. The procession is always a highlight of Brackley Carnival and the organizers want to make it bigger, better and brighter this year. Anyone can enter - large groups, small groups, community groups, private companies… it’s a fun way to promote your group or business! The procession starts at 11am and follows a route from Brackley Sawmills to the carnival site at Magdalen School in the High Street. BRACKLEY SOAPBOX DERBY Sunday June 16th 2013 Now a firm favourite annual event within the town the 2013 Brackley Soapbox Derby will take place on Sunday June 16th on the High Street. From 2.00pm onwards soapboxes will run on the main road down the hill to the finish line at the Market Square car park. The race is open is open to two classes, juniors under 15 years of age and adults 15 and over. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for the fastest three in each class and a separate

Sell your Home! If you are thinking about a house move, then you’ll need a valuation on your current property. But it’s really important to take some time to present your house well so you can you maximize your home’s value? Here are some ideas on how to make your home look its best and hopefully achieve the valuation you need.
First of all it helps if you can let go of your emotional connection to your home. This will help you to see it as a product to sell rather than your home. Then begin to remove all the personal items such as family photographs. Potential buyers need to imagine their own items in the house rather than be distracted by yours. Then declutter! Get rid of all the stuff you don’t need. Bag it up for the charity shop or rubbish tip. Then pack away non-essentials such as books that overflow off the 18
bookshelves, unnecessary kitchen equipment, cuddly toys from the kid’s bedrooms, and general nic nacs – just think of this as making a headstart on your packing! Put labeled boxes in the garage or rent a storage unit. Clear surfaces so everything is off of kitchen worktops, dressing tables, and sideboards. Then replace some with just one or two carefully chosen items. Don’t just shove things into drawers and cupboards – buyers like to look in those so show that you take good care of your things (as that implies you take care of your home too) by arranging things neatly.
Attend to any minor repairs now, especially things like dripping taps and burned-out light bulbs. If your rooms are painted bright colours, consider neutralizing them! Accounting Software At some point all business owners will have to get to grips with accounting software. From use as a bookkeeping tool to complete Vat returns, creating annual accounts or simply to raise sales invoices. Accounting software now comes in 3 main forms. Basic Excel spreadsheets, ‘off the shelf’ packages and the modern, online ‘cloud’ based systems. Choosing a solution that is best suited to your needs is essential. Once chosen, it is then a priority to ensure that you are getting the most out of your system using the least amount of time. For many small businesses, using a combination of Excel and Word to run the business works well. This is a perfectly fine approach and if set up right, Excel can certainly rival a lot of accounting software packages, whilst automatically creating a cumulative total of spend/income allowing for Vat calculations to be carried out at relative ease. For the slightly larger businesses an accounts package is preferable. Good accounts software will allow you to easily raise and keep track of sales invoices for each customer, enabling searches by business and days outstanding. It is of course also possible to log all expenditure and associated Vat to be able to create Vat returns and also view profit and loss accounts for specific date ranges. Bank statements can also be imported to ensure that all income and expenditure is captured. The major development in the market over the past few years has been the emergence and subsequent growth of online ‘cloud’ based accountancy software. This software shares all of the characteristics of the traditional ‘off the shelf’ software but is accessible anywhere, anytime, from any computer (or in some cases mobile phones/tablets). Many accountants are now promoting this new solution to clients, allowing them to work remotely whilst the client continues to use the software for day to day activities. This allows real time information on profitability and cash flow to be available to the client, helping them to better understand and grow their business.

It’s here, Come Dine with Me is in Brackley! Who will become our Brackley Come Dine with Me champion?! Earlier this year, local residents James Butler, Claire Cutting and Emma Cadden teamed up to find a way to raise money for local charity Brackley Food Bank and The Katie Piper Foundation. Together, and with a little advice from the Channel 4 television show team, they came up with ‘Brackley Come Dine with Me’. If you are interested in taking part in the Brackley-based charity version Come Dine with Me sees amateur chefs competing against each other by hosting a dinner party for the other contestants. Each participant awards a score to that night’s host and the person with the highest score after all the meals have taken place is awarded a cash prize.
If you are interested in taking part in this charity version (untelevised!), you need firstly to find a partner (husband/wife, friend, girlfriend/boyfriend, parent, child (over the age of 16) etc). At least one of you must be over the age of 21. Each couple will be matched with two other pairs and then the fun begins! Each pair hosts an evening, deciding on the venue, menu, budget and entertainment themselves. Themed nights are permitted (even encouraged!). You could go glam or sophisticated, student style or over-the-top – the choice is yours!

The Brackley Morris Men have a history in the town extending back through four centuries. They were associated with the presentation of a silver communion plate to the Parish Church in 1623. In 1766 the Oxford Journal wrote of how their leader ‘having been somewhat insolent as well as troublesome in playing the fool, had the misfortune to get himself committed to Brideswell as a vagrant’. In 1866 the Banbury Guardian reported how the fool ‘was very active with his javelin, a cow’s tail and bladder’ and how he ‘displayed much witless buffoonery’. They’re still as popular as ever today, with more invitations to dance at fetes and celebrations than they’re able to support. New dancers and musicians are always welcomed as an essential way of ensuring that this fine local tradition continues to thrive.

Spring has been so reluctant to show her face, but I imagine the warm weather has well and truly kicked in by now. It’s time to get those jobs done but of course lets also get some well-earned relaxation! Looking Good Of the countless plants about to bloom, here are a couple of worthy performers: Geranium psilostemmon has dainty purplish cranesbill flowers in early summer. They will grow to a height of around 90cm, and will add colour and movement to a border, in sun or light shade. Campanula poscharskyana has striking blue flowers above small green leaves. This useful evergreen will cover the ground and is fully hardy Kitchen Garden Numerous extra jobs this month. Remove runners from strawberries. Put straw or mats down to protect the new fruit. Congested raspberry canes can be thinned out to allow better air circulation and healthier plants. Net brassicas to protect from birds, but check regularly that no animals are caught up. Borders Be prepared to support tall growing herbaceous plants such as Delphiniums, with canes or specialist frames that can be lifted as the plant grows. Dead-head regularly to encourage new flower buds.

A run of four away games brought consecutive goal-less draws followed by back-toback wins to see Brackley well placed for the final run-in to a long hard season. The visit to Workington was one of the longest round trips in the whole league and falling on a Tuesday evening was a trial of endurance with the coach arriving back in Brackley shortly after 4am! With just a handful of matches to play Saints are odds on for a top five finish – a remarkable achievement in the club’s first ever season at this level. This would qualify Saints to contest the play-offs for an unlikely place in the Football Conference! Were this to come about we will see home and away legs to the semi-final and a possible final to decide the team to be

promoted alongside Chester who have already been crowned champions gaining automatic promotion. Look for out further news on this on the Brackley Town website and for posters around town advertising what would be a momentous semi-final match at St James Park. Further good news came at the start of April with a successful ground grading visit. Many volunteers toiled hard to get the stadium ready and great credit must be given also to the contractors who worked through months of dreadful weather to finish on deadline. The new terracing is splendid, new clubhouse spacious and new floodlights sparkling bright! If you can get along to a game to support the Saints you will be warmly welcomed.
