Welcome... NOVEMBER ISSUE 2015

....Remember, remember…….and yes, we have some fireworks for you in this November edition of our marvellous magazine! Whether you’re warming yourself by a bonfire, waving sparklers or toasting marshmallows, nobody can deny that Bonfire night is a special date in the calendar, to share with family and friends and enjoy the spectacle. Whatever your favourite part of the festivities, remember to keep safe – why not choose one of the many professional fireworks displays locally – and keep pets safe indoors, too. Being with those you love, on a memorable day in the calendar, are important themes for another date which will soon be upon us – Remembrance Sunday. Buy your poppy and wear it with pride, in recognition of the sacrifice made by so many, in order that our lives could be free. Conflicts around the world, leading to fear, tragedy and the current refugee crisis, are constant reminders of what their sacrifice has saved us from, so why not make a difference by donating a little money or spare items of clothing to one of the many collections for displaced people who have nothing. A thoughtful note this month, but a sombre moment to reflect is fitting before the celebrations yet to come – we’re on the countdown to Christmas! Until next time……….

Choosing a Family Lawyer Few people consult a family lawyer before they need to do so and, for that reason, the process of choosing one to support and represent you at a difficult and stressful time can feel rather rushed. Many of our clients come to us through recommendation from a family member, friend or work colleague, but a significant number will look for a family lawyer through local publications, organisations or the internet. Divorce, separation and issues around children are often emotional, complex and can take time to resolve. This is why it is vital to choose a solicitor that you feel will provide you with the best level of service and support and one who understands your situation.

12

When choosing a family lawyer, we would recommend looking for one who can demonstrate experience and expertise of your specific circumstances, provide a clear indication of the likely costs involved in your matter, and be relied upon to communicate well and give regular updates on the progress of your case. Spratt Endicott Solicitors offer clients a fixed fee initial meeting at ÂŁ80 (including VAT) at any of our four offices in Banbury, Brackley, Bicester or Buckingham. For more information please contact Patrick Mulcare on 01295 204153 or email pmulcare@se-law.co.uk.

FISH, FISH AND MORE FISH H e a l t h & B e a ut y

We are often being told of the benefits of fish in our diets, with recommendations that we should all be eating at least two portions of the oily variety, such as salmon, every week. But according to recent research, we are nearly all neglecting the health benefits that this readily-available and low-cost protein offers. According to Dr Rachael Gibbs of the University of Reading, both men and women are falling below the recommended intakes of omega 3 oils - easily obtainable through regular consumption of fish such as fresh or smoked salmon. This means, according to scientific study, that we are not reaping the benefits which can start as early as in the womb and take us through to old age. The health benefits of the oils that are found in fish have been well documented, but more recent evidence suggests that there are even more reasons we should take a closer look at our diets throughout our life-stages. For example it is known that regular intake of omega oils will ensure good foetal development, offering better immunity and higher birth weights. But more recently it has been discovered that they could also reduce the risk of post-natal depression and improve IQ in babies. Good quality omega nutrition also ensures normal development of the retina and the brain, supporting normal learning and development - and now it is also thought that it can lower the risk of allergic disease.

The benefits continue through childhood, where emerging evidence suggests that behavioural disorders such as ADHD can be managed through diet. They continue into later life where it is now thought that fish oils can reduce the risk of dementia and signs of ageing. Sara Stanner, Science Programme Manager of the British Nutrition Foundation, added that fish plays a very useful role in a healthy diet. As studies continue, it is thought that it has far more health benefits than originally believed. For example, fish intake is now thought to protect against cardiovascular disease and a number of cancers and may even help control Type 2 Diabetes. Studies also suggest that maternal fish intake during pregnancy may reduce the risk of eczema and asthma in babies,' she said, adding that other components in fish such as selenium, potassium and vitamins could also be adding valuable nutrients to healthy diets. Therefore it is surprising to note that, according to information from the Expenditure and Food Survey, the amount of fish being eaten has fallen across the UK in the last few years - possibly due to the recession and families making cut-backs. However, it is thought that more than 1 million fresh salmon meals are eaten in the UK every day and fresh fish will become the fastest growing protein of the last few years - meaning we will all soon be reaping the ever-increasing benefits of a nutritious diet.

Add a little sparkle... Beauty and grooming aren’t just luxuries, they are an absolute necessity – looking your best makes you feel better, boosts self esteem and increases your appeal to prospective employers, thereby improving your earning potential. With facts like these, it’s much easier to justify the little expense of a new accessory, monthly facial or manicure; they’re not just making you look better, they’re improving your worth – both mentally and financially. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to make a

difference, and sometimes buying big and spending more can save in the long run – it’s about savvy shopping. If finances are tight, look at the aspects that most affect you, and concentrate on those areas. Expensive perfumes and high end serums can be bought more cheaply online, and compromises can be made on cheaper moisturisers and cleansers – Aqueous cream, available in big tubs from pharmacies for just a few pounds, makes

an excellent cleanser and moisturises the skin, too. Remember that a scarf in your perfect colour will light up your face and saves money on a new outfit or expensive treatments. For tips on choosing the perfect colours for you, enlist the help of a friend, a well lit room, and swatches of fabric or clothes in a whole range of colours. Try three different shades of pink, for example – and see the difference each makes to your face. Skin tones frequently fit the traditional seasonal colour types, and once you have found ‘your’ colours, choosing flattering clothes and shades of makeup becomes so much easier!Healthy Halloween ideas

Halloween means sweets, sweets and more….sweets! To my children, anyway… but here are some superb ideas for healthy ghoulish treats, to delight the little ones, without requiring a trip to the dentist.

Healthy Hallo

Squiggly jelly worms – you'll

need some jelly, a pack of 100 bendy drinking straws and some strong elastic bands. Bunch the straws together and put bands around near top and bottom and a couple around the middle, and place in a jug which will keep them upright. Make up a pint of jelly – strawberry works well, or why not do half and half, with some lime green and cola flavoured? Pour the made up jelly into the bunch of straws, being careful to fill them all, and pop into the fridge. When

18

set, dip the straw moulds briefly into warm water and shake to remove the ‘worms’ – and they are remarkably lifelike when slithered into a bowl!!

oween ideas Banana ghosts and Satsuma pumpkins

A very simple idea, easily made with even the smallest children. You’ll need: a pack of small bananas, some chocolate drops, a pack of satsumas and a stick of celery Cut each banana in half, and stand them up on the cut end. Add chocolate drops for the eyes and mouth. Peel the satsumas and arrange on a plate; cut the celery stick into small pieces to become the ‘stalks’ and gently push into the top of each satsuma.

Another milestone in Brackley’s illustrious history was formally commemorated on Sunday 27th September, 2015. The Mayor of Brackley, Councillor Jim Broomfield, in full regalia and brilliant sunshine, welcomed 33 German visitors and their Mayor who were visiting Brackley to spend a weekend celebrating 40 years of continuous twinning between the two towns. The day began with a guided history walk up and down the High Street led by members of the Brackley European Association. The German visitors were given an illustrated booklet written in their own language to give them an introduction to some of Brackley’s fascinating history. At midday, the Morris Men danced with great aplomb on the Piazza and then the assembled company repaired to the prestigious Upper Chamber of Brackley’s historic Town Hall for a Civic Reception and a formal luncheon. There were the two Mayors, a number of Town Councillors, members of the Brackley European Association, their German visitors and special guests, the Lord Lieutenant, David Laing, and the High Sheriff, Ahmed Mukhtar and their wives. Limes Farm provided an excellent meal whilst the wine and conversation flowed. There was a splendid musical interlude led by members of the Town Band and a celebration cake was ceremonially cut. Gifts were exchanged, toasts and speeches made and the original

40 YEARS OF pledges of friendship and co-operation renewed in the signing and sealing of new Charters. The weekend had begun on Friday afternoon when the Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor Fiona Baker came to welcome the German contingent when they arrived at the Town Hall to be greeted with an English teatime reception with home baked scones, jam and cream and traditional shortcake biscuits. The German visitors were then whisked away by their English hosts, some of whom have been meeting up with the same families every year for the whole 40 years of twinning. On Saturday, there

for a few days sightseeing in other parts of England. It had been a really great occasion; new friendships made, existing ones deepened.

FRIENDSHIP was a very enjoyable and informative day’s outing to visit Hill Close Gardens in Warwick and the Lord Leycester Hospital, finished off in style with a social evening in St Peter’s extension hall with a buffet supper provided by Kim of Tasty Thymes and entertainment by Chris Tobin. After the formalities of Sunday, hosts and guests spent a relaxing day in and around Brackley, with a small party being entertained at the Mercedes Petronas site. On Tuesday morning, we waved a fond farewell to the German coach as they set off

A very successful weekend, largely due to the months of fundraising, planning and sheer hard work undertaken voluntarily by members of the Brackley European Association who take on the responsibility of sustaining all the town’s twinning activities on behalf of the Town Council. They operate on a self funding basis, paying for their own travel expenses and raising funds to entertain twinning colleagues when they visit Brackley. All residents in Brackley and the surrounding district are eligible to join the Association. Meetings are held on the last Thursday of every month at 8.0pm in the Lower Town Hall, except in December. Everyone is very welcome to join. And everyone would be especially welcome at the next two meetings which are fund raising evenings open to all, members and non members alike. There is a Curry and Quiz evening on Thursday 29th October and a Winetasting evening on Thursday 26th November, both of which have proved very popular in the past. So, do come; we have a lot of fun. With Christmas T With Christmas now approaching all too quickly and many of us watching the pennies even more closely this year, it’s more necessary than ever to cut costs and still have a fabulous time. By starting a few weeks ahead, there’s time to plan and plenty of ways to save: Buy one extra item with your shopping •each week, and make your own Christmas

hamper – cranberry sauce, crackers, a bottle or two – spread the cost over the next few weeks Get together with plenty of friends and family for a huge Christmas dinner – share the cooking, everyone brings something, agree to only token presents and enjoy a family occasion, instead of big presents and each household cooking for themselves – small children will remember this long after toys would be outgrown or broken, and happy memories are priceless. They don’t need to know you’re saving! Make your own – jam, chutney, fudge, cakes – the list is endless! Decorate plain gift boxes, or use gingham and ribbon to make jars look

Time Approaching pretty. For pennies, you can give something you have created, to be enjoyed over the festive season. Look on selling sites, on social media sales groups, or even cards in shop windows – many items are just as good ‘nearly new’ and less than half the price. Antiques and vintage items are valuable yet second (or third!) hand, so why should all presents have to come from a shop? Give vouchers – special offer sites regularly have cut price pamper treatments, meals out, activity or spa days, for a fraction of the actual cost, so why not buy one of these for a friend – the present will be worth considerably more than you paid! Get crafty! Old clothes can become patchwork cushions, a ball of wool can become a cosy scarf……there are so many online videos with step-by-step instructions, it’s possible to learn simply any skill!

The Garden in NOVEMBER With snow having already arrived in Russia, will the cold weather be knocking on our east-wing door? It doesn’t always follow, but easterly airflows tend to repeat through the winter. That said, don’t believe any hard and fast prediction for the season ahead. They are notoriously unreliable!

The Garden in NOVEMB numerous, and don’t forget there are other ways to brighten those dark days. Hollies in berry give vivid contrast of blood red and lustrous green, and blackbirds will be very grateful for the food on a cold day.

Brackley Town Part Company After a stuttering start to the new season Brackley Town parted company with manager of six years Jon Brady. Former Chelsea star Frank Sinclair took temporary charge securing three successive draws before a permanent appointment was confirmed. In his playing days new manager Kevin Wilkin was a striker with The Cobblers and comes to Brackley after 8 successful years as manager at Nuneaton Town before spending last season at Wrexham where he led his side out at Wembley in the FA Trophy final. Wilkin brought in Mark Noon as his assistant and started with FA Cup success at Tooting & Mitcham. The new management team has inherited a side at the wrong end of National League North and a tough season lies ahead to climb

clear. These are nevertheless exciting times at St James Park as the club renews its commitment to ensuring top flight non-league football in Brackley and to building a stable and competitive club.
