Welcome...

April ISSUE 2015

........April is a busy month! Easter brings hope of new life for Christians, chocolate eggs for kids – and big kids - alike, and for all of us working too many hours, a very welcome Bank Holiday, to share time with loved ones or do those DIY jobs that have been mounting up! I’m keen to get out in the garden, as the evenings draw out and new shoots are appearing; April is a great time to order your hanging baskets and bedding plants, or to try growing a few vegetables from seed – the kids love to help out and are keen to try their home-grown produce! It’s also a great time to think about Spring cleaning our lives, homes and wardrobes, with weather warming up and Summer just around the corner, we can de-clutter and feel brighter and happier. Until next time………

April is National Car Care Month

April is National Car Care Month and the Car Care Council reminds motorists to spring into action and follow 4 basic maintenance procedures to make sure their vehicles are running at peak performance for the summer driving season. 1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. 2.Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear. 3. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums

inspected at each oil change. 4. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions. Whether you visit a professional service technician or do it yourself, a thorough vehicle inspection this spring can help keep your car safe and dependable and help you avoid much higher costs down the road in the form of more extensive repairs or lost resale value.

Spring cleaning – made easy!

If the Spring sunshine streaming in through the windows is making you feel like having a cleaning blitz, but time and enthusiasm are lacking slightly, what’s the best solution?

1. Start simply – choose the grubbiest areas where your time can be used to most noticeable effect. Shampooing carpets and giving walls and ceilings a lick of paint can make any home look brighter and well cared for, in just a few hours. 2. Have a de-cluttering day!! Get the kids involved – a box to keep, one for a friend or younger relative, one for the charity shop, one to throw away……..see who can

sort their cupboard out first, have a race! 3. Employ someone! If it’s a really grotty job, like cleaning the oven or clearing out gutters, why not see how much a local company would charge? They are the experts, and may well do a much better job, with all the right equipment, in a considerably shorter time – it’s a no-brainer! 4. Reward yourself – make sure you plan a treat for when you’ve finished, even if it’s just a well-earned cuppa! So, what are you waiting for? Tackle that

Does your oven need divine intervention? ...call an Oven Angel. We get through the grime to show the shine non caustic fluids used, no fumes, no smells , not harmful to children or pets.. No hidden charges

What do people do?

People who regularly attend church often attend special services on Easter Sunday. These may be longer or more elaborate than on other Sundays. In churches, it is generally a festive occasion with an emphasis on the dawn of a new life. In Battersea Park in London, there is a large Easter parade. Easter is an important time for the confectionery industry. In the United Kingdom, Many people celebrate Easter Sunday by decorating, exchanging or searching for eggs. The eggs may be fresh or boiled eggs laid by chickens or other birds, chocolate eggs or eggs made of other materials. Many children believe that the Easter bunny or rabbit comes to their house or garden to hide eggs. They may search for these eggs or find that the Easter bunny has left them in an obvious place. Some businesses and attractions hold Easter egg hunts. These can be competitions to see who can collect the most eggs. Why don’t you see if there is one around your area.

Protect your home As there has been a recent spate of burglaries in this area, take a moment to consider the security of your home. Burglaries tend to be opportunist crimes so by removing the opportunity, you significantly reduce the likelihood that your home will be targeted. Start by taking steps to ensure that your home always looks occupied. Use automatic time switches to turn on lights and the television or radio while you are out. Install effective external lights. PIR ones are ideal as they come on when movement is sensed. Think about the areas around your home that give natural cover – ensure that these areas are lit by outside lights and also trim back any hedges or trees that might act as cover.

targeted by a burglar. Fit internal window locks throughout your home. Keep the area around your home clear of items that could be used to force entry. A householder’s own garden tools, wood, bricks, and ladders are often used to gain entry to the building.

You might wish to invest in a security alarm or other system. Even a dummy alarm box or cctv camera can act as a deterrent to an opportunist burglar.

Pay extra attention to the security of your garden sheds and garages. These are particularly popular targets for thieves during milder weather due to the high value of their contents and the low level of security usually found on them. Just in case the unthinkable should happen, take

Politics As is the case with religion, the vast majority of people have immovable opinion about politics, and so it is unwise to descend into outright debate or even argument on a first date. The first date atmosphere should be light and flirty, with friendly conversation about topics which can remain neutral; politics do not fall under any of these categories. In the long run, someone's political views will probably not be enough to end a relationship, and so holding off on deep discussions about party politics can be eschewed for the first date at least. Past Relationships Everyone has had relationships, with some good

First dates can often feel like a minefield of potential faux pas and blunders that may convince a potential suitor that a second date is not a wise idea. It can be difficult to know which areas are off-limits for conversation on a first date, especially when the onus is on getting to know someone.

Date Faux-Pas and some bad experiences all round. It is inevitable that, at some point, should the relationship be successful, conversation about exes will eventually come to light. Regardless, any mention of previous relationships on a first date should be kept light and broad, without too much detail. Should the first date go well, there is plenty of time to share details of misfortune with previous partners, but spilling out the minutiae of a recent messy divorce can be a serious faux pas in dating terms. Money In-depth discussions about money and how much of it one possesses can be considered rude at the best of times, and should certainly not be brought up on a first date. Financial issues should remain private until such a time as is appropriate; bragging about having a lot of money can come across as cocky or arrogant, whilst mentioning not having enough could look as though you are trying to evade splitting the bill come the end of the date!

The Garden in April Spring into ˚ action

As Nature switches to fast-forward mode, you need to be ahead of the game to keep the garden in order, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Gardening advice is available everywhere these days from the reassuring banter of Monty Don or the trio of experts on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time to the column inches in the weekend newspapers, magazines and gardening books. However, it is the postings on social media where many people are now getting much of their advice. The new breed of global gardeners are savvy on so many things, including environmental issues such as the plight of the bee to dealing with the extermination of Japanese knotweed to how far you have to catapult a slug to completely

disorient it and stop it from returning to your garden! Timely seasonal advice is one area we can gain and often get one step ahead of the game and at this time of the year the bloggers, the Face bookers and Tweets are coming thick and fast. Gardens are getting smaller so by far one of the most popular questions is what you can grow in paved or decked areas close to house? Most of us will want to grow a whole range of colourful plants, maybe some productive crops as well, but leaving space for entertaining friends and family. If you are planning glorious summer seasonal plants and crops of Strawberries, Tomatoes, a plentiful supply of herbs and salad crops then good light is essential. You need at least six hours

of sunlight to grow crops and exotic flowers successfully. In shade you need to do your homework to find the plants that work best in the location and for you. However, Beetroot, Chard, Kale, Kohl Rabi and Lettuce are all relatively tolerant of some shade, but sowing seeds in modules in bright conditions and then transplanting will get them off to an early start with an established root system. Patio and decked areas work best on all levels – floor standing pots, wall baskets and troughs. Add the likes of Fuchsias, trailing Pelargoniums and Petunias to provide a succession of colour. Next aim to use valuable wall/fence space by opting for trained fruit trees (usually sold as espalier and fan-trained trees) and climbing vegetables. Finally, take advantage of your aerial space, home for hanging baskets dripping in blooms or crops of delicious Strawberries.

You can also add structures to your patio areas, especially if they are away from the house, so consider building a pergola, pergola walkway or arbour. You can really go to town with these structures and plant, for example Grape Vines, Wisteria, Hops, Clematis or Passion Flowers amongst others. In this instance the plants may well provide a shade canopy for the seated area beneath, so if this is the case plant zealous perfume providers such as summer flowering Jasmine, Sweet Peas, Trachelospermum and Evergreen Honeysuckles should be planted.

Start the routine

POT UP Buy your plants and compost. Seasonally tender plants can go out after all risk of frost has passed. Climbers, shrubs, vegetable plug plants and fruit (bushes and trees) can be planted now. Do incorporate some slow release fertiliser into the compost at planting time. Likewise, if you have existing plants in need of a much deserved feed then don’t delay give them some nutrients.

WATER CONTAINERS regularly as weather conditions and plant growth dictates. Most baskets and smaller pots may need watering more than once a day. Add a soluble fertiliser such as Phostrogen or Miracle-Gro to your watering can once a week to keep your plants in tip top form. DEADHEADING may be time-consuming but it is worth the effort as it will extend and improve the production of flowers and the overall display. PROBLEM PATROL You will need to check over your plants regularly for pests and diseases. The usual suspects are Aphids, Blackfly and Mildew and these are easily controlled using systemic sprays, including the Vitax Organic 2 in 1 option.

Twice the impact

Planting two climbers together on the same support makes good use of space, particularly in a small plot. If you combine climbers which have the same cultural requirements but flower at different times, they can be as easy to look after as a single climber and yet provide a long season of interest. For climbers and shrubs to combine with ease, it is essential to match the vigour of the plants so that one doesn’t swamp the other. Provided that the plants have similar requirements for soil type and aspect, as well as maintenance, such as pruning and watering, you can double up the impact without doubling the work. An example, any two large flowered hybrid clematis flowering at the same time can be grown together – it is only a matter of carefully harmonising colour schemes. However, many clematis that need little or no regular pruning can be grown over large,

established no-prune climbers without fear of competition. One combination which grows particularly well in my garden is a Clematis macropetala grown through a rambling ‘Wedding Day’ rose. Pictured is the pleasing combo of Clematis ‘Etoile Violette’ with Rose ‘New Dawn’, one of the modern climbers which also repeat flowers. Remember you can grow both roses and climbers in a reasonably sized pot if space is limited. If you have an old tree, select a vigorous climber that doesn’t need pruning and will quickly establish and reach up onto the canopy of the tree. Many of the Montana Clematis work well as does Virginia creeper in trees and also in evergreen hedge lines too. As always good soil preparation is essential. The extra root competition means adding generous amounts of planting compost and Bonemeal at planting time. To keep the momentum of these dual displays, mulch around the base of the plants in late winter and do feed every April with Blood, Fish & Bone or Vitax Q4 to boost growth.
