December/Janaury ISSUE 2015
........With holly on the table, begging my attention, lists a-plenty and a recipe for the perfect turkey, reminiscent of a beauty regime to prepare for an evening out….rinsing, soaking, browning and moisturising seem rather more luxury spa than kitchen activities!! Yes, the festive season is upon us and whether for you that means going to church and singing carols, or spending far too long in a supermarket queue, only to find you’ve forgotten the sprouts, we all agree that time with friends and family, too much for lunch and watching the Queen’s speech are Christmas necessities. With a year flown past behind us, I really must say a massive ‘thank you’ to you all, our loyal readers, and our wonderful advertisers with their superb offers and Christmas gift ideas, and last and most importantly, our distributors, who do a superb job in all weathers! So to you all, a very Merry Christmas, thank you for being with us through 2014, and a very happy and prosperous New Year – let’s enjoy 2015 together! From Mandy & Kate.x Until next time………

A new child specialist service in Buckingham As a mum I have never accepted to wait months for my child to be seen. The time scale is so different for a child; months of feeling anxious or depressed seem like forever to them, they feel abandoned. Children and teenagers live in the moment so how could they understand that they will be given support in 6 months when they are in pain now? It makes them feel like nobody believes them. I feel on a mission at a time when NHS psychology services are stretched to the limit: • to offer you quick appointments, adapted to your work or your child's timetable at school, • to offer you a gentle and expert professional support through your difficulties and above all an efficient resolution of your issues. I also believe that parents know when something is wrong with their child. Usually they have a hunch 8
that something has changed or that difficulties are growing but they hesitate because getting psychological support is still taboo. Trust yourself and don't hesitate to call for a free advice. It has been almost two years since I decided to set up my psychology practice, Leap, in Buckingham. I felt the time was right to share my expertise. There have been challenges such as finding the right place, easily accessible to all; getting the word out there that Buckingham finally has a specialist psychology
service for children and families and that parents don't have to travel to Aylesbury or Milton Keynes... I have loved every minute of it.

It's been a very busy year for the staff at B3 Fitness since the B3 is a new strength and conditioning gym located on the Buckingham Road Industrial Estate, it offers a extensive range of professional plate loaded equipment, free weights, Olympic lifting platforms, functional fitness Rig, separate CV suite and a strongman yard. Gym instructor Adam explained to me the benefits of strength and conditioning training. When properly performed, strength and conditioning training can provide significant functional benefits and improvement in overall health, fitness and well-being, including increased bone, muscle, tendon and ligament strength and toughness, improved joint function, reduced potential for injury, increased bone density, increased metabolism, improved cardiac function, and elevated HDL (good) cholesterol. The biggest misconception people have when it come to strength and conditioning training is they will develop body builder like physics... this is not true! Head PT Mark Bruce tells me some of the

members before joining thought it would be an intimidating place to come and were amazed by how friendly and helpful everyone is and not just the staff but other members. To be honest I find that most people who train on a regular basis love to talk about training, how they train and have you tried this exercise... He went on to tell me about how many female members are seeing the benefits of the Rig Class and how some call it their secret weapon! The Rig is B3's functional fitness circuit class which is run around an impressive piece of fitness equipment called The Rig. The class is offered to everyone on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, Wednesday and Sunday mornings. It's a high intensity circuit class covering all of the fundamentals of functional fitness. Ideal for those looking for fitness, weight loss, fun group training, express fitness and a must have in your training programme if you're planning on attempting a Wolf Run or Mud Run. Owners Mark Chapman and Tim Fox explain how they set out to provide a gym with state of the art equipment for like minded people who can come and workout, share knowledge, with professional staff members on hand to advise and train side by side with the members. Mark States we are not just another fitness studio or health club with rows of treadmills and a business plan to sign up customers in a contract and then forget about them. We have no contracts, no DD and no awkward cancelation procedures. Here at B 3 we are all about our members and their goals...

The Garden in December and January L o ve y our gr e enhouse Garden sheds are the essential must-have for many people, however Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day thinks it’s time the greenhouse made a comeback. This is the perfect season to turn your gardening greener. Choose a crisp, frosty day, and go for a neighbourhood ramble. Keep your eye out for the glint of sun on glass, and make the most of gaps in fences and hedges. There are lots of empty greenhouses looking for love, and all you need do to hug one is ask its owners if they still want it. If you feel less bold, check the classifieds in your local paper. You might chance upon a “free to dismantler” or pick up a bargain for a fraction of the price of a new one. However, a new green-
house, if funds allow, is likely to be one of your best investments you will make. My first greenhouse, in the 1970s, was a wooden 6ft x 8ft structure, purchased mail-order from The Daily Express. It was glazed with I quote “the latest corrugated rigid plastic sheeting technology!” Suffice to say, it cost me £30 and it was the catalyst to some epic growing adventures. Since then I’ve had a couple of aluminium glasshouses (Halls and Eden) and today a wooden potting shed with a built-in lean-to greenhouse, a cosy haven, which gives you the best of both worlds. However, the best bit about acquiring a preloved, second-hand greenhouse isn’t just the bargain element. By reusing it, you’re reinvigorating all the energy used to make it in the first place. And if you’re concerned about locating spares and doing repairs, an online search for “greenhouse spares” reveals a cornucopia of suppliers for every bit and bob imaginable.

What, no propagator?
When I gave up heating my greenhouse I did invest in a windowsill electric propagator complete with 7 mini propagator trays and lids. Many seeds germinate quite readily, albeit more slowly, in the fluctuating temperatures of a sun-powered greenhouse. My propagator, despite being petite, is perfect for sowing small quantities of seeds starting from early January with geranium seeds. Seeds that need a warm and constant temperature can come indoors for a bit of pampering. A window sill in your most inhabited room or your boiler/airing cupboard is ideal (evict those towels). Check regularly for signs of life then get them into the light straight away. Every other day turn the trays around to ensure well balanced growth rather than lanky, leggy, leaning growth.

Winter vegetables - freeze and thaw
To guarantee fresh pickings in deep midwinter, you need to stay ahead of the frost game. Once a spell of prolonged freezing weather sets in, and crops have turned dark, sagged and the compost/soil is frozen solid, it’s impossible to harvest them until they thaw (they’ll snap if you try). If falling temperatures are forecast, cut some of what you want and store it in the fridge, or move pots of winter salad leaves to a frost-free place indoors. Covering crops with multiple layers of horticultural fleece (two or three at least) will give extra frost protection, but remove it straightaway once a thaw sets in. During milder spells, harvest at will, but keep the vents open and the air moving to deter fungal diseases like grey mould (botrytis). Keep crops on the dry side and only water, sparingly, when they just begin to wilt. If and when you have to winter irrigate aim to do it in the morning so allowing the plants foliage to dry before nightfall.

FIVE TO SOW NOW Winter isn’t just for gazing at seed and plant catalogues. The following are best sown in pots or trays and, unless the weather is mild, brought indoors to germinate. There’s no need to thoroughly soak the compost after sowing (which we tend to do for spring and summer sowings), just moisten it lightly. Once germinated, move seeds back to the greenhouse, only bringing them indoors on very cold nights. Don’t expect them to romp away as they would in spring; growth, depending on the weather, will be slow but steady. Salad leaves I aim to sow at least one 12cm (5in) pot of salad leaves every week and get two or maybe three cuts per pot. Right now, the hardier oriental brassicas, green in the snow, mizuna and red mustard can be germinated indoors and will be ready, depending on the weather, in around six weeks. Mangetout peas 'Oregon Sugar Pod’ stands low temperatures better than others. Sow four seeds to a 10cm (4in) pot. Pot on into 30cm (12in) pots when around 15cm (6in) tall and support with 1.2m (4ft) long twiggy sticks, or plant in soil beds. Sweet peas I never get around to sowing in October, but I’ve often caught up by sowing in November, December or January/February. You’ll still get flowers weeks ahead of spring-sown plants. Broad beans Sowing now produces young plants for early spring, planting either in beds within the greenhouse or polytunnel (near the door so bees will find and pollinate them) or outdoors. Sow one seed to an 8cm (3in) pot. The variety 'Aquadulce Claudia’ is reliable. Early-pull carrots 'Amsterdam Forcing’ and 'Early Nantes’ do well from late-winter sowings in a 30cm (12in) pot. By spring you’ll have tender young roots to pull.

YEAR-ROUND SCHEDULE Winter Bring pot-grown Strawberries into the greenhouse in January (they flower and fruit best after being frosted). Remove dead leaves and repot in fresh peat-free compost. You are their pollinator: dust pollen between the flowers with a small brush, then enjoy the rewards from early May. Spring It’s all systems sow as your greenhouse captures increasing amounts of sunshine. Slugs will thrive in ever-wetter summers, so start plants in pots or multi-celled trays to give them a head start when planted outdoors, aided by some organic slug pellets. Summer Make the most of warmth-loving crops. Indoor Tomatoes (opt for the blight resistant varieties), Peppers, Aubergines, Cucumbers and Melons all need the raised temperatures of a greenhouse to succeed. Autumn Use the warm, rain-free space of your greenhouse to store/ripen onions. Pumpkins and Winter Squashes. Lay trays in full sun so skins bake and ripen fully. Bring in a few spring flowering shrubs such as Viburnum bodnantense, Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’, Forsythia or pot up some spring bulbs, such as Crocus, to force into early flower for the house.
