Welcome... Dec/Jan ISSUE 2016

...Well, here we are at Christmas again! I think I blinked and missed most of 2015, it whizzed by so fast! They do say that time flies when you’re having fun, so maybe that goes at least part way to explain things – it certainly has been a pretty impressively memorable year, made all the better by having the company of all of you to share it with. Christmas is such a fabulous time to spend with all our friends and family – two legged, four legged, at home or spread across the globe – with presents, cards and precious time spent together. It’s also a fantastic time for FOOD! With over 3000 calories in the average Christmas dinner, I’m looking forward to savouring every single one – it’s lovely to have that one special day a year to let your hair down – eat, drink and be merry….mmmmm!! As I mentioned, this year would certainly not have been as brilliant without all our readers, advertisers, distributors and contributors – so thank you all for your loyalty and company in 2015, and here’s to another healthy, wealthy and wonderful year together in 2016! Until next year……….

Christmas trees We’re all feeling excited and festive, but the prospect of that annual trek to choose a tree always has me in a bit of a flummox…..real or fake? How tall? Will it fit in the car?! There are so very many choices, so here are a few pointers to make the choosing a little less of a challenge! Real vs. fake – households with crawling babies, or where space is at a premium, may prefer an artificial tree, or a real variety with non-drop foliage. If the look and smell of a real tree matters to you, why not consider choosing a potted one, that won’t drop needles and can live outside the rest of the year? How high? Measure ceiling height, subtract the height of your stand and the star to go on the top of the tree, and get choosing! Real trees can always be trimmed a little if

they won’t fit the space, and artificial trees are available in a huge range of heights, widths and colours. Budget – artificial trees, or potted real ones that are still growing, can save money each year, but can be a much larger initial expense. Real trees can be bought from local nurseries and a huge range of sizes and varieties are available – speak to the knowledgeable staff at your garden centre for advice. Afterwards – if you choose an artificial tree, it can be packed away and stored until next year, in a cupboard or loft. If it’s a potted tree, the garden is the best place, until next year – but it may outgrow your home, or need repotting, and you will have to care for it throughout the year. A cut real tree will only last for the festive season, but can be recycled or chipped up to use as garden mulch and so will benefit your plants all year round!

What does Christm Family time, being with loved ones, plenty of presents, eating too much? Whilst we are enjoying planning and wrapping, baking and making, it’s also a time to think about all those less fortunate than ourselves – and make their festive season just a little happier. Giving to charity isn’t just for the very rich – we can all do a little to make a difference. Just buying an extra tin or two with your supermarket shop and popping them in the food bank collection basket is no effort and costs less than a pound, but will benefit someone who may otherwise not enjoy their Christmas. Pottering about indoors Now is the time to enjoy the colour and spectacle of your indoor plants, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. It was back in 1942 when a gentlema called Thomas Rochford coined the phrase ‘houseplants’ for those potted indoors plants we grew on our windowsills. Of course back then plants grown in the home was a relatively new concept, as generally only the well to do could afford the likes of stylish palms, Victorian Aspidistra and pots of Pelargoniums. That basically was it until Mr Rochford decided to up the game and introduce, in greenhouses he had previously grown Tomatoes, Cucumbers and Peppers in, a whole new crop of plants. These are plants we grow and know today, including Swiss Cheese plants (middle pictured ), Rubber plants, Spider plants (pictured top left), Money plants, Cacti (marketed under plants from the desert), Mother-in-Laws Tongue, Devils Ivy, Begonias, African Violets and Pot Chrysanthemums. However, in the huge commercial world, growers were also keen to cash in on this fast evolving market and once the Dutch (and later the Belgium, Danish and American growers) got involved the UK was quickly awash with masses of amazing plants, which we enjoy today. The technology of growing plants, such as better

22

growing techniques, improved composts and fertilisers and tissue culture (the clever test tube growing of plants) has brought prices down dramatically. Go back 25 years and you would have paid around £50 for a 2/3 stem Phalaenopsis orchid, now you can buy one for £15 or less! Our homes have changed too! Back in the Victorian era the only plants that would survive were the thicker leaved Aspidistra, the well named cast iron plant, as the houses were relatively cold, dark and thick with coal and gas fumes. Now our homes are generally much warmer, lighter and airy, perfect to grow exotic foliage plants, orchids and flowering pot plants such as the tropical orchids and bromeliads. So, as we enter a period of frantic houseplant buying, it’s worth having a chat about what our plants require over the winter period. One thing is certain, more plants are likely to be killed by overwatering than any other reason, so generally be sparing with the H20! Of course there are

exceptions and the beautiful florist Azaleas and potted bulbs do need more water than most. If you fancy growing some simple greenery then a few good plants to grow include the stately Kentia Palm, Draceana (Dragon tree) or how about Spathiphyllum,(pictured above) sometimes called the Peace Lily? Spathiphyllum is basically a green leaved plant but periodically it produces beautiful white spathes as shown. Of all the flowering house plants, the Peace Lily care is probably the easiest. In fact, it tolerates average indoor conditions better than many house plants. Its dark-green, glossy leaves are strongly veined and arch away from the plant's base, making this an attractive foliage plant when not in bloom. Keep its leaves dust-free by wiping them with a damp cloth. Blooms (spathes) usually appear in early summer and last for weeks. The pale green spathe turns white as it opens and surrounds the protruding spadix that is densely covered by its tiny, true flowers. When flowers start to fade, cut off the flower stalks as close to the base as possible.

If you have a Spathiphyllum that fails to bloom it is usually because it is not getting enough sunlight. Move your plant to a brighter location, but keep it out of direct sun, which can scorch leaves. If it is an older plant that refuses to bloom and you haven't divided it in several years, divide it in spring. This is one of the few plants I know that blooms better after dividing it. When caring for a Peace Lily plant, remember that its leaves will indicate any problems. Brown leaf tips are likely caused by overwatering. Water thoroughly, but don't allow the soil to get soggy. It could also be caused by direct sun. Move it to a shadier spot and be careful not to overwater. If the leaves become shrivelled and dry, the humidity is too low. You can increase humidity by misting the plant or placing it on a tray of wet pebbles. The advice for the Peace Lily is pretty universal for most foliage plants to be honest. Increasing the humidity around other foliage and specimen plants can be easily be achieved by mist spraying with a simple 1 pint sprayer filled with water. Keep the sprayer primed and in the room so the water is kept at the optimum temperature and, ideally, mist your foliage plants 2-3 times a week.

Top Tips for festive plants Poinsettia: Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a lovely red Poinsettia (pictured). It is essential you position the plant in good light away from direct sunlight and draughts. Avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C). Overwatering too, quickly damages the plant. When the surface of the compost begins to dry out, water thoroughly. Place the pot on a tray with pebbles and water, as a humid atmosphere will prolong the coloured leaves (bract) life. Cyclamen: Water from the base by standing the plant in a saucer of water until the plant has stopped taking up more water. Water again before the compost has dried out. Good light and cool temperatures are essential. Christmas Cacti: Good light is essential. Bud drop, the biggest cause of problems, normally occurs when the plants are moved into different areas of temperature and light. Aim for a steady temperature of around 55°F (13°C) throughout the flowering period. Keep the compost just

moist, and repot after flowering to ensure good flowering next year. Winter Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum): A relative of the tomato so keep well watered and fed to keep green and perky. Mist spray to improve humidity if theleaves begin to drop. As a general rule use rainwater rather than tap water if you are living in a hard water area like Buckingham.
