Driving through snow The advice during heavy snow is to avoid going out but if you must travel then using your car may be the only option. DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize . If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £315 for the phone call. Written by Chris Day Buckingham Nurseries & Garden Centre 01280 822133 Well, what a year – one of the coldest winters on record followed by the warmest spring and autumn in decades, but it really has been an excellent time in the garden this season, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. However, at this time of the year, and with the New Year looming, this warm spell couldn’t come at a better time for gardeners. Coming as it does in the lull between autumn and spring; it’s the perfect time to put past disasters firmly behind you, think through your plans, then give 2012 some real welly! Well, if you are anything like me, and most people we are a tad wishy-washy with our resolutions; even gardening ones. Most fall into vague pigeon holes such as ‘Must do Better’, ‘Plant some Fruit’ and ‘Grow more Vegetables’, which is the gardening equivalent of ‘Lose Weight’, ‘Get more Exercise’ and ‘Spend Less Money’– all forgotten in a flash! Well here’s my New Year’s tip. Combine the lot into one great big resolution, simply to spend more time in the garden. Then sit down sometime over a weekend with
everyone in the house and make a list what’s really important to you about your outdoor space. So is it - fun for the family? Wildlifefriendly? Create a garden pond? Semiself-sufficiency? Stylish patio area? Or, a themed red, white and blue garden to celebrate the Olympic Games in 2012 or The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee! Then simply work through an action plan for achieving it – before the mood, and moment, passes. Now in some cases that means making major upheavals to the garden, and actually midwinter is a great time for doing just that. Oh, I know the weather isn’t too great for working outdoors, but it’s precisely because all the usual routine gardening chores don’t need doing that you have time to plant a tree, put up fencing or lay a patio. By the same token, I’d push ahead and plan

the purchasing of seeds, propagation equipment, seed potatoes, fruit trees or bushes from the Garden Centre. Once you’ve popped out and purchased your plants you’ve effectively committed yourself, so there’s no turning back! It all tends to fall down when you don’t have any grand plans and just want to get better results from what you already have in the garden, the secret lies in being well organised from the outset. So get your new diary out, and make a series of entries when key jobs need to be done – the sort you tend to overlook, like sowing or pruning dates - and allocate any particularly major or important jobs to certain weekends. Oh, you’ll almost certainly have to shift them around nearer the time, but at least they are flagged up as needing to be done, so there’s less risk of them being overlooked indefinitely. For a fair few keen gardeners, motivation isn’t the problem – rather the reverse. Some people always try and take on too much all at once, so their plans go to pot over the season as time runs out. Here the solution is to pace yourself, but again a
diary can come to your rescue. Use it to plan where you need to be with all your various projects and when, so it’s instantly visible if you’re overstretching yourself. So, work to the resolution “Do less but do it better” from the start of January 2012. But whatever you promise yourself garden-wise in 2012, organise a strategy which you can work to. After all, New Year gardening resolutions, like pets, aren’t just for Christmas; they’re for life. cont page 20 METAL
