A Fairtrade Town 4
We Yes, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Apparently, for this special day British people spend around £30 million on flowers and over £40 million on Valentine’s Day cards! This year, make sure some of that hard earned cash stays local. We have some amazingly creative florists in Buckingham who can help you to choose a fantastic gift for your special someone, and there are several places to head for a perfectly romantic card. If you are planning a meal out, book your table now (and your babysitter if necessary!) to avoid disappointment. Other ideas for gifts you can easily buy locally are a photo (or photo sitting), a beauty treatment or massage voucher, a piece of art or jewellery, or a unique present from one of the town’s fabulous gift shops. February 2013 invites us all to indulge in another kind of love too... the love of pancakes! Shrove Tuesday falls on 12th February this year so get your supplies in and your frying pans at the ready. Live a little and make 2013 the year you sprinkle more than sugar and lemon juice on your pancakes. Why not try apple & cinnamon with ice cream, chilli con carne with cheese, or banana and walnuts? Enjoy!

Angel of the Heart Call on her with any issue connected to the heart.
Call on her when you need to activate healing hands. Associated with February The Angel of the Heart is ready and waiting for your call. All you need to do is ask for her help with matters connected to the Heart. As we enter the month of February we are reminded that St Valentine’s Day is approaching fast. We are bombarded with love hearts and flowers, chocolates and champagne, adorning shop facades and other visual media. But take time out to really think about who resides in your heart and what true love really means to you. Be kind to yourself and release any internal block to allow yourself to be truly loved. Remember like attracts like. Be loving to yourself and others. Surround yourself with loving thoughts, words and deeds and in doing so you will activate healing in your hands. May your heart be filled with love. Angel Blessings to you all. Jodi x

It’s never too late to make a New Year’s resolution, or perhaps to make a new one if all the good intentions 2013 didn’t last very long! If you are in need of inspiration, here’s the top ten New Year resolutions:
1. Spend more time with friends and family. 2. Get fit. 3. Lose fat. 4. Give up smoking. 5. Enjoy life more.
Page 13
Health &Beauty
6. Give up drinking. 7. Get out of debt.
8. Learn something new. 9. Help others. 10. Get organised. If you have difficulty keeping to a resolution, try a different approach. Instead of the ‘cold turkey’ method, make small changes towards your goal. So rather than go on a diet, try making small changes towards a healthier diet. It’s worth a try!

The Garden in
F E B R U A RY
As we start a New Year we have the joys and
traumas of the festive season behind us and the blank pages of 2013 stretching before us like a freshly vacuumed carpet. However, the questions for us gardeners is, says Chris Day, will that carpet be a lush shag pile or a pathetic tufted economy second. However we approach it, last year was not a good year as there was too much rain and general apathy for anything much to thrive never mind grow. Vegetables literally drowned and fruit never really came to much, roses were battered by showers and herbaceous borders were flattened. Thank goodness for the Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics with all that stirring pageantry and sportiness to occupy our minds - and also for the tantalising glimpses of the Olympic plantings of James Hitchmough, Nigel Dunnett and Sarah Price at the Olympic venue in East London.

FULLY QUALIFIED AND INSURED TREE CARE AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE
Let’s hope this year will be different and the sun will shine on all our plantings and gardening projects large and small. To be honest I am not really a fan of New Year Resolutions as I feel one is just setting oneself up for disappointment (think diets!) but, in the interests of fearlessly gutsy journalism, here are a handful: Inspired, in part by the meadow plantings at last year’s Olympics and also at the Garden Centre where our bee hives are located, I want to grow more wildflowers in the garden. It will need some planning, however, to see the likes of Cornflowers, Foxgloves and Poppies teaming with hoverflies, moths and bees but if achieved it would be a delight. In fact I think I’ll stick my neck out and say 2013 should be the revival year for those tough, yet colourful hardy annuals such as Larkspur, Godetia and Nasturtiums, which are a magnet to all sorts of aerial wildlife. I certainly remember these flowers from my childhood, their simplicity to grow and re-seed made them a gentle reminder of the wonder of Nature. The other 2013 planting project you could do to help the wildlife, but also to help you, would be to plant and establish an edible hedge. These are nothing new, after all man has been foraging for fruits since the dawn of time. However, it makes good sense to grow something that is productive as well as decorative in the garden, whatever the space you have available. So, what exactly makes up an edible hedge line? Well, it tends to be an informal mix of plants, including Rosa rugosa, Blackthorn (sloe), Amelanchier, Cornelian cherry, Hazel, Myrobalan Plum, sometimes called the Cherry Plum (pictured opposite top right), but you could also include the likes of Elderberry,

Berberis, and the Japanese Quince. This edible mish-mash of species will yield spectacular results in the form of flowers, fruits and good autumn colour in just a couple of years from planting. You would need to space the plants around 18in (45cm) apart in a single row for best effect and a sunny aspect suits them best. Last year I spent four energetic days visiting National Trust properties in Somerset (including Barrington Court, pictured), North Devon and Wiltshire famed for their great gardens but this year I must go and visit even more gardens. There are so many wonderful places in this country and I have visited shamefully few of them, although a National Trust membership does help you plan (or make an excuse) for productive journeys out. Likewise I need to go to visit more specialist small nurseries – these are, after all, the lifeblood of the horticultural industry in this county and many are struggling, so we all need to support our local suppliers. We also need to encourage young people to go into horticulture: it is a fabulous profession to be involved in. Perhaps not the highest paid, but undoubtedly one of the most satisfying. We have a fantastic tradition of great
gardening in this country and this is something worth protecting. Garden Centres are now forging great links with local schools. Take our Potato Challenge, now in its 5th Year, which has grown massively and something we are able to successfully run with many schools. However, it’s not just potatoes, over the years we’ve been involved in setting up raised vegetable and fruit beds, rejuvenating borders and re-panting with wildlife friendly plants – pictured Bourton Meadow School in Buckingham, establishing new trees and even providing practical pruning advice to teachers and children! If any MK18 schools would be interested in taking part in our Potato Challenge and, perhaps having a go at our

‘Biggest. Heaviest & Weirdest Shape Marrow Competition’ then full details will be available at our Potato Weekend, 16th and 17th February. All you have to do is register with us and we will then contact you with all the details. Finally, looking at ways to maximise your time in the garden, without the slog! Again, it’s a matter of planning. Keep the number of planted containers to the absolute minimum, upsize if you have to so you can get bigger, bolder displays, but avoid planting too many pots and baskets this season. As the saying goes: “Less is more” and it’s particularly true if you are a slave to a hosepipe and deadheading your planters. On the subject of
deadheading, be savvy and buy “self-cleaning seasonal plants”, these by definition are low maintenance plants that do not require any deadheading. Good ones to look out for include Bacopa (white, pink and blue), which incidentally lasts well into winter, Begonia semperflorens, Begonia Kisses range, Calibrachoa (single and double types – looks like a miniature petunia), Torenia (variety ‘Violet Moon’), Lobelia, Pelargonium (ivy-leaf trailing balcony types), Scaevola (blue and white) and cutting-raised New Guinea Impatiens, Double Impatiens, Petunia (‘Surfinia’ and the double named forms). You will come across these plants as young “plug” plants in Garden Centres shortly, or you can purchase more established plants from May onwards in 9cm pots. Plants in these larger pots are perfect for directly planting into your containers for fast instant results. I am sure you have your own resolutions - good luck to you all with them and a Happy New Year from all the staff at Buckingham Garden Centre.

TOP TIP If you were given a gift boxed Hippeastrum (sometimes sold as Amaryllis) for Christmas then it should be planted as soon as possible to enjoy those spectacular blooms. Make sure the growing pot has sufficient drainage – if not, use a proper plant pot. When planting up the bulb don’t bury the bulb too deeply, ideally the shoulder of the large bulb should be exposed close to the compost surface (pictured). If you plant too deeply this normally results in either the bulb failing to bloom or worse, the bulb rotting. Aim to keep the compost just moist at planting; you can gradually increase the amount as the flowering stem develops usually 4-6 weeks after planting.
WIN! A Buckingham Garden Centre Gift Voucher worth £25! Dust off those winter blues, it’s time to think about starting off a whole host of plants from seeds, plugs plants, seed potatoes and summer bulbs!
