He a l th & Be a ut y

My Story...Paula Atkins During my time at school, I was never overweight; far from it. I was the ‘sporty one’ taking part in everything that was offered from Athletics to Netball to Hockey to Rounders and anything inbetween. This was until, during a game of netball aged 18, I significantly injured my knee. My sport ceased, my eating increased! After major knee surgery I hoped that a return to the sports that I so desperately missed was on the cards, I was however to be disappointed. From that moment on, food became my pleasure, my release. I had swopped running around a sports field for eating; anything that I could find that would make me feel ‘happy’ again. In 2008 I married my boyfriend of 8 years wearing a size 14 wedding dress. I remember feeling really pleased that I didn’t need the 16! Three months later we had the amazing news that we were expecting our first child. This was to me, like a green light to literally eat anything and everything in sight. I put on 4 stone during the pregnancy justifying it to myself as ‘baby weight’ as I was after all ‘eating for two’. If I’m honest, the amount I was eating, I could have fed 8! On April 1st 2009, our first son Charlie was born. Talk about love at first sight! He was perfect in every way and weighed a very healthy 8lb 8oz. I on the other hand, weighed a very unhealthy 15st 5lbs. News of this weight shocked me and I reassured myself that the scales within the doctors surgery were obviously super sensitive as there was no way I could have possibly been that heavy. Twenty-one months later on January 2nd 2011, our second son Josh was born. My weight during this pregnancy had remained steady, in fact, after his delivery, I hadn’t put on any weight at all…I had managed to eat ‘normally’ for the entire 9 months! I was amazingly proud of myself. Over the next three years, we faced many health battles with our youngest son. At the tender age of just 3 months, he was diagnosed with epilepsy. This was our first ever experience of the illness and to say it was/is a rollercoaster, is an understatement. I would turn to food as a ‘coping’ mechanism each and every time Josh was admitted to hospital and again, try to justify it to myself. The turning point for me came when a friend told me that she had started ‘Cambridge Weight Plan’. I

10

had previously heard of the diet as Before my mum was a consultant when it was known as ‘The Cambridge Diet’. My friend explained that it had developed somewhat, with a greater choice and with my agreement, booked me in for my first appointment. I can honestly say that I turned up to this appointment with absolutely no intention of seeing the diet through, after all, how could I possibly feel full consuming such a small amount. As my consultant, Jacqui, was talking to me and taking me through the health questionnaire, I remember laughing to myself that there was no chance I would be back as the chances of me actually finding a product that was palatable let alone enjoyable, was almost none existent. I even said to Jacqui not to expect me back but that I would try. And I did. I was pleasantly surprised! Amazed actually. Not only did I enjoy the shakes, I even found myself looking forward to having them! And not because of feeling hungry either, in fact, hunger didn’t really ever factor. My first weigh in loomed and I was ecstatic to learn that I had lost an unbelievable 9lbs in 7 days. I was so shocked I had to check that the reading was right! How was it possible?! It wasn’t long before I reached my first stone loss. And then my second and third ticked along. Before I knew it, Jacqui was writing 5 STONE LOSS on my record card, I think I had tears in my eyes and big goofy grin on my face! Yes, I still had over a stone to go but never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have been able to get so much weight off, so quickly and so ‘easily’. Yes it took commitment. Not once in the entire time did I ‘cheat’ or go off plan. For me, it just wasn’t worth it. Seeing the numbers I was getting each week was enough, and so much more satisfying than food! The comments from friends and family have been very motivational too. Another way of ‘keeping me focused’. My mum said, very early on, that once I had achieved my goal, whatever that was, that she was treating me to a shopping trip to kit me out with a new wardrobe. ‘Where have you gone?’ has to have been one of my favourite comments, it gave me a real sense of pride and accomplishment. My energy was back too. Playing with my boys has been so much easier and more enjoyable. Bouncing on the trampoline to have Charlie say ‘mummy, I like it now your tummy isn’t so big, you never bounced with us before’ literally

bought tears to my eyes. I had missed out on lots of memories, all because of being overweight. Instead of ‘mummy is tired and she needs a sit down’ the boys now get ‘right what are we playing next?’ My happiness is clear, you can literally ‘see the happiAfter ness’. The best way of describing my journey is like my dimmer switch has been turned up. I had never realised what a huge impact being overweight was having on me and how self-conscious I was. Now, as I slip on my size 10 jeans for a night out, I don’t need any encouragement to go out and have a good time. No longer to I feel like the short fat one! All I can say from here is thank you. Thank you to my friend for introducing me, thank you to my husband and ever supportive family, thank you to Jacqui for always being there when I’ve needed you and thanks to Cambridge Weight Plan for helping me change my life! I am now an Independent Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant and am loving the opportunity of helping people achieve 'the possible' and lose their weight too. I couldn't be happier.'

The Garden in February Setting out your stall

˚ With spring fast approaching, there’s never been a better time to start thinking about successional planting of your flowers and vegetables, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. If you caught the flurry of gardening programmes in the television last month then I’m sure many of you will be all fired up to make your garden even better this year. Sumptuous wide borders brimming with luxuriant flowers and productive vegetable beds crammed with delicious produce may look great on the screen, however, translating it to your own garden needs a bit of planning. The key to a successful garden is as much about the choice of plants, the varieties of crop and, most importantly an understanding of successional planting. Simply put, succession planting - following one crop with another is the most important tool for

maximising a garden's yield. Creating a detailed succession plan now eliminates the guesswork of what and when to plant later on in the season. So, let’s start in the vegetable plot. Get started by making a list of all the vegetables you want to grow and developing an understanding of their individual growth habits and preferences. Catalogue descriptions and seed packet instructions offer each vegetable's vital statistics, including when to first plant in spring, how many days the variety takes to reach maturity, how much space it requires, and if it is frost-tolerant. Consider, too, how long each vegetable is productive. Some crops, such as Radishes and Rocket, have a harvest period of just a few weeks. Carrots, salad crops, and other vegetables with an intermediate maturation time may be sown in spring and again in late summer for autumn and winter harvests. Others, including Tomatoes and Peppers, are long-season crops that bear continuously, while Brussels sprouts, Sweetcorn,

and Pumpkins remain in the ground for several months but only bear at the end of their season.

Create a planting schedule

Assembling all of this crop information into a planting plan is a bit like putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle of the garden. Simplify things by drawing a spring, summer, and autumn diagram of each area. Begin plugging vegetables into the diagram, with early, quick crops followed by long-season ones. Be sure to note the approximate date each crop needs to be sown or transplanted and when the expected harvest date is. Vegetables that belong to the same plant family (such as Cabbage, Cauliflower, and Kale) share pests and diseases. It's wise to keep in mind what family a vegetable belongs to and avoid planting one member, say tomatoes, in the same spot where they or a cousin - Peppers, Aubergines and Potatoes - grew in the previous 2 or 3 years depending on your crop rotation.

Manage same-crop successions by sowing small amounts of seed or transplanting a few seedlings at regular intervals, either in the same bed or at different times in various parts of the garden. Sowing small rows of leafy greens every 10-14 days, for instance, ensures a consistent supply for salads rather than a big glut all at once. Simultaneously planting varieties that mature at different times, such as early, middle, and late-maturing brassicas, is another way to extend the harvest time of a single crop.

Choose the right varieties

Variety selections are also important when planning how to use the harvest in the kitchen. For freezing, grow varieties that produce a concentrated harvest - such as cordon Tomatoes, French Beans, and Broccoli varieties that form one large head of crop per plant - and can then be pulled to make room for a new crop. For continuous harvests, choose varieties that yield consistently over a longer period, including Runner Beans, bush Tomatoes, and Broccoli that produces side-shoots for weeks after the main head is harvested. Climate, weather, and growing conditions affect variety choice and succession

timing, too. In spring, lengthening days and warming temperatures encourage vegetables such as Spinach to bolt quickly. Sowing heat-tolerant varieties helps to extend their harvest early in the year, but it is less important in autumn, because the vegetables last longer in cooler weather. When buying seed or plug plants, think about the potential challenges crops will face - high summer heat, humidity, cold springs, heavy soil, and early frosts - and choose varieties that will perform best in your garden and the season you want to grow them in. In the flower garden, perennials and bulbs hold the key to effective successional planting. Spring bulbs make great under plantings peering through the bare soil with their display weeks before surrounding herbaceous perennials stir into growth. So, make sure you plant spring blooming bulbs in the autumn so they are to first to bloom in late winter or early spring. Use Snowdrop, Crocus and Daffodils and other bulbs that are early bloomers. Remember if you missed the boat last autumn, pots of bulbs are available from the Garden Centre to help infill the gaps you may have. Plant a mixture of early and late blooming varieties of these bulbs, plus Tulips and Hyacinths in the middle of the bed to ensure colour until the herbaceous perennials begin flowering. Plant Pulmonaria, Lupins and Aquilegia (pictured top right) and other late spring to early summer perennials between the flower bulbs. Place the shorter plants in the forefront of the bed so their foliage and flowers disguise the dying bulb foliage while adding fresh colours to the garden. Plant the taller plant varieties, such as Delphiniums, in the rear of the bed to add further depth to the garden. Next place mid-summer flowering plants between the bulb plantings, as they will begin reach full-size and blooming once the bulbs have gone completely dormant. Choose varieties such as Achilleas, Poppies or Echinacea.

The greenery of the early-summer flowers softens the edge of the bed while these taller plants bloom. You are best to mix in late summer and autumn perennials such as Michealmas daisies (Aster), Rudbeckia with the early summer perennials in the front of the bed for useful late colour. Use Heuchera, border Dianthus and other short plants in this area. Finally, also add tall late summer and autumn flowering perennials to the back of the bed. Choose varieties such as Japanese Anemone or named varieties of Phlox. Or choose plants with attractive seed heads to add winter interest to the garden, such as Monarda, Echinacea (pictured left), Rudbeckia, Sedum and Solidago.

Top Tip

Never underestimate your bed of roses as you can capitalise with early colour before they bloom, in between flushes of blooms and at the end of the season. Plant Dwarf Narcissus ‘February Gold’ and Grape Hyacinths along the front edge of your rose bed. Do set a few Alliums such as ‘Purple Sensation’ for May and early June colour as well as a some ground-covering Geraniums. Scatter sow a few seeds of Nigella ‘Miss Jekyll’ (Love-in-a-mist) to carry on the colour and provide interesting seed heads for the late summer and autumn.
