Choosing a Roofer Do you take your roof for granted? Often it’s only when the roof starts to leak that we take any notice of it! But it’s very important not to neglect this part of your house. A building’s roof takes the brunt of the weather; coping with snow, storms, rain, sun, and frost, and when a problem occurs, it can become a very big problem very quickly. So if you’ve got a roof problem, how do you choose a reliable experienced roofer? Firstly, asking around is a good idea. If friends have first-hand experience of a local roofer and are happy to recommend, then it’s definitely worth getting a quote from that company. This magazine, the Internet or your local telephone directories will provide further contacts. You may also wish to ask trades people that you have previously used if they can recommend someone.
When you make contact, judge the level of customer service. Is the roofing contractor easy to talk to on the phone? Do they offer a free estimate? You can tell if a roofer is professional and knowledgeable from these early conversations. When a roofing contractor comes to quote, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Check out the roofer’s experience and that of their roofing team. What qualifications do they have? Are they a member of an approved roofing scheme such as NFRC or CORC? Check that the company is insured. All good roofing firms will have an insurance policy. Ask the roofer to clearly explain what work is needed and to send a broken down quote. This will allow you to compare quotes like for like. If the quote looks good, do some more research. Ask for references to find out what previous customers think of the roofer’s work and service. Always remember that the lowest price isn’t always the best price – there’s a balance between good quality and good price. Don’t simply rely on a gut feeling. Your roof is too important! Jen Oakton

Save Money on Fuel It was only a few years ago that the public protested against high fuel prices as the cost threatened to go over £1 per litre. However, fuel prices have continued to rise steadily since then and make a significant contribution to the difficulties faced by many right now. If fuel costs are a nightmare for you, here are some steps you can take to get more out of every tank of fuel.

Firstly, don’t over rev when accelerating. Rather than relying on the sound of the engine to tell you when to change gear, move up a gear when you hit 2500 revs (2000 on a diesel car). Don’t use too high a gear either as this can increase fuel consumption.

You must drive smoothly to conserve fuel. On a motorway, keep to a steady cruising speed rather than accelerating and decelerating often. Around town, avoid stop-starts by accelerating and decelerating gradually where possible. On roads with speed bumps, travel at a steady 20mph.

The Garden in February
Written by Chris Day Buckingham Nurseries & Garden Centre 01280 822133
One Potato, Two Potato, Three Potato
More “Fancy tasty new potatoes just 8-12 weeks after planting, well you can and it’s relatively easy?” says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. We love our potatoes don’t we? I know some of you prefer them boiled, some chipped, whilst others, myself included, adore them mashed with best butter and seasoning! They are surely the best accompaniment to our 5-a-day and because of their versatility; we simply don’t get bored with them. Yes, you’ve guessed it, I’m a great potato fan, so can I recommend you try and grow some this year? We need to start somewhere and it is the seed potato that is the key here. We stock over 40 varieties of loose seed potatoes as well as 18 Heritage varieties (10 tubers per pack) with tastes varying from variety to variety. So, some varieties may fry well, whilst others are more suited to boiling and roasting, whilst
waxy potatoes are better for salads than floury spuds. We would recommend you do a little research and checking prior to buying. But for starters opt for new potatoes – and select popular first early varieties such as ‘Arran Pilot’, ‘Home Guard’ and ‘Rocket’ as these produce well-sized tubers perfect for container culture. Fancy growing them in pots, well here are some tips… 1. Once you get your potatoes home, start “chitting” (sprouting them) in a light (not direct sunlight), cool place indoors. The potatoes will then grow short stubby shoots, which will get them off to a fast start when planted out. Empty egg cartons are perfect for storing your tubers and you can turn the container once a week to ensure strong shoots. 2. If you plan to grow in a pot, make sure it is at least 2030cm (9-12in) deep with a minimum 30cm (12in) diameter. Poly bag pots (they are relatively inexpensive at 5 for £1.99)

or rigid pots can be used, but they must have good drainage holes in the bottom. 3. The compost you use for your potatoes must be good quality multi-purpose compost, ideally with say 10% John Innes added. If using home-made compost from the garden, sieve out any woody material so not to hinder the tuber development in the compost. 4. Planting can be done from late February onwards. Allow 1 tuber to a 30cm (12in) pot or up to 5 tubers in a dustbin sized container. You may need to add crocks to large pots. Add 4-10cm (1.5-4in) of compost (depending on the depth of the container). Place the tubers on this, in the centre if one tuber, or equally spaced around the edge of the container if more. Cover with 10cm (4in) of compost. As the potato
shoots grow, add more compost. You need to continue this "earthing up" process until the compost is 4-5cm (1.5-2in) below the rim of the container. Make sure the pots are placed in good light outdoors. 5. You need to water regularly, although you need to avoid overwatering in the early stages of growth. Once you are regularly earthing up, watering twice a day may be necessary. Apply some Doff Tomato or Tomorite liquid fertiliser to your watering can once a week to feed the developing tubers. Here’s the best bit, your new potatoes cont page 20 should be ready from early June onwards! METAL

Written by Chris Day Buckingham Nurseries & Garden Centre 01280 822133 Our Potato Weekend Get top potato and vegetable growing advice from experts (Thompson & Morgan’s Colin Randel, pictured, and local allotmenteer Bernard Stopps) at our Potato Weekend, 11th-12th February (10am-4pm), each day. We’ll also have local gardening clubs, the Buckinghamshire Branch of the National Vegetable Society, Fritz Du Zutter from Moulton College will be demonstrating fruit grafting, children’s entertainment, plus lots more… Top Tip Dates will vary from year to year and around the UK as to when is the best time to plant. However, a good indicator that it is warm enough to establish chitted spuds in the open soil (rather than in pots, which can be done from late Feb onwards) is when the dandelions start to flower; normally the temperature is around 6°C (43°F).
