Holiday Motoring If you’ve got a long car journey this summer, take a little time to carry out a few essential checks on your vehicle. First, check your tyres’ tread depth and pressure, and look for signs of wear. Make sure you check the spare tyre too.Next make sure your brakes function properly and check your oil levels. Ensure that your engine coolant is at the recommended level and that your cooling fan activates. If your car does overheat during a journey, turn your heater on to full and start the air conditioning to relieve the situation. Top up your windscreen wash and check the effectiveness of the windscreen wiper blades. These simple checks will help you to avoid breakdowns but they are no substitute for a thorough check carried out by an expert. Visit one of our local garages to find out about current offers for a summer car health check. Your local garage can make sure your battery is in full test and will service your air conditioning unit.working order with a battery Jen Oakton

Summer Survival

Follow us on Facebook for these packages

If you are planning plenty of days out with the kids this summer, it’s a good idea to put together a small summer survival kit to help you deal with many eventualities! Your kit should include: Wet wipes and Hand Sanitizer. There’s no replacement for washing your hands well with soap and clean water but if you can’t get to a sink, then wet wipes and an alcohol-based hand sanitizer will be a good start. Wet wipes are also useful to refresh the face.

Sun screen is a must for both the kids and yourself. Use a cream with an SPF of at least 15 and reapply regularly. A lip balm with SPF of 15+ will help prevent dry lips. If you do get mild sunburn, relieve the pain by cooling the skin (get out of the sun and have a cool shower), drinking lots of water, and applying an after sun cream with aloe vera. Insect Sting Cream and Insect Repellent. Use a good insect repellent for adults and children who tend to be popular with the little critters. Also carry a tube of insect sting cream to bring relief after stings. Keep antihistamine medicine in the car or cupboard. Jen Oakton

Holiday Saves Heading abroad for a holiday this summer? Here are a few tips to keep costs down...

If you need to use your mobile phone overseas, then contact your network before you go to discuss the best way to keep roaming charges low. Some providers offer extras to your usual price plan. Texting while overseas is usually the cheapest option. Be careful not to surf the web or collect email too often on your phone as the costs do add up. If you are given the choice of paying for goods or a meal in either sterling or local currency, it’s usually better to choose the local currency as the conversion rate used in shops and restaurants is generally unfavourable. Buy suntan lotion before you fly as it is often cheaper in the UK than abroad. Book airport parking well in advance to save money. Save on holiday car hire insurance by buying independent cover before you fly.

Olympic Secrets How do Olympians do it? Mere mortals often find it difficult to muster enough enthusiasm for a trip to the gym or a quick jog around the block so how do the elite athletes keep going? More importantly, what advice would they give to encourage others to get fit and stay fit? Most Olympians agree that a positive attitude is the key to success. Work out what you want to achieve from each fitness session and focus on that. Then think about how this will help you reach your long term goal. Finding fun ways to work out will help you to keep going. Not everyone is suited to the gym so try dancing, martial arts, or netball. Find other motivated people to train with as this will help you stay on track. Having a fitness buddy with similar goals will also make you push yourself harder. Make sure you get enough rest. Your body repairs itself while you sleep and relaxation helps you to stay mentally strong.

The Garden in July

Choosing plants with a winning streak No doubt over the next few weeks world records will be broken, a new league of sports people will become household names and medals will be presented, hopefully to Team GB! In the world of plants, just like the greatest Olympians, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day, there are many outstanding performers that literally scale the heights of impressive performance. No, I’m not going to go through The Guinness World Records of Plants, rather simply to chat about a few plants which really do outshine and give a sterling performance whatever Mother Nature decides to do. Now for us gardeners the best plants have already been through a few hoops, trials and have been judged under scrutiny by the Royal Horticultural Society. The RHS Award of Garden Merit, otherwise known as the RHS AGM scheme, means those plants carrying the trophy logo

18

have proved their worth for best all-round garden value. So, what that means is they deliver on flower/fruit/foliage performance, they are readily available at Garden Centres, the plants don’t require any specialist care or treatment, and are not particularly susceptible to any pest or disease and above all, they have a good constitution. There are over 100,000 plants available in the UK alone, so picking out the winners is no mean feat, but here’s a few of mine, which I’m sure if you plant them you won’t be disappointed. Well, its summer (of sorts) so let’s start with some good doers for colour. You cannot go wrong with climbing roses and here’s a trio to keep the colour flowing. Rose ‘Aloha’, a compact, climbing, old fashioned rose derived from the classic ‘New Dawn’.

It has a lovely strong fragrance from its rose-pink cupped blossoms and best of all, it repeatflowers all summer long. Rose ‘Golden Showers’ is a more open-cupped bright yellow rose that fades to cream with age. However, its exuberance makes it incredibly prolific in bloom as well as having a pleasing

fragrance as well. Topping the trio for fragrance has to be Rose ‘Madame Grégoire Staechelin’. The red buds open into large, double pale pink blooms, but what a fragrance this rose delivers - many say it is comparable to that of sweet peas! Best of all, this rose is almost thornless and will grow on a north-facing wall covering 20ft in break-neck speed if you allow it!

When it comes to cottage garden favourites, goodness the choice is even more overwhelming. However, let’s start with a later flowering favourite, Anemone x hybrid ‘Honorine Jobert’. The pure white flowers with their ring of gold anthers grow on airy stems from August until the first frosts. It’s been around since 1858 yet it still wows its audience even today. Best of all, it will illuminate those shady borders reaching around 1.2m (4ft) when in full bloom.

Wr it t en b y C h r i s Da y B uck in gham Nur se ries & G arde n C ent re 01280 822133 We get new garden pinks introduced on the garden market every year it seems, but for pure staying power you won’t beat the 40-year-old Dianthus ‘Cranmere Pool’. The large, strongly scented double flowers are white with the faintest blush with a distinctive red zone at the heart of the flower. It does best in full sun and on reasonably free draining soil, so on Buckingham clay do work some horticultural grit in to get it off to a flying start. Like all dianthus, you can easily propagate them and this month is a good month to take cuttings of all garden pinks and carnations. However, for pure summer blooming staying power, you cannot fail to be impressed with Salvia nemorosa ‘Amethyst’. For one thing the bees and butterflies absolutely love it and secondly, even when the flowers fall off, the long spikes

reveal their lovely pink colouring. It does best in any sunny place with well-drained fertile soil. It makes a fine aromatic clump in time, around 45cm (18in) across and 60cm (2ft) in height when in full bloom. Finally, a couple of shrubs your garden simply cannot do without. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ has proved its worth, even surviving the last couple of severe winters. This evergreen packs a punch with its glossy foliage and the bright red new growth which it rapidly develops in the spring. A good warm summer encourages a flush of white flowers on mature plants in the following late spring. It can be trimmed and trained as topiary, a formal hedge or simply grown as a free-standing shrub, where it could reach 8ft in height.

To make your garden a winner this summer, do plant the bright golden-leaved elder, Sambucus ‘Sutherland Gold’. The pinnate leaves make the plant look delicate giving it an almost Japanese maple effect, and the creamy white flowers followed by red berries make a welcome surprise. Plant both of these shrubs in close proximity (say 2-2.5m apart) and you’ll have your own winning combination for years to come!

Top Tip

All the recent torrential rain means plants in the open garden will need additional feed to make up for all the leaching (nutrient loss from soil) which has occurred over the recent weeks. So, invest in some Blood, Fish & Bone if you are organic, or Vitax Q4 if not, and apply this generously around established and newly planted stock. Displays in pots and baskets will fare better with Phostrogen or a Tomato feed applied every 10-14 days.
