It’s Air Conditioning time... It’s that time of year again when we get to turn our air conditioning on in our cars. We don’t have that long normally to use it - I am sure summers get shorter every year. When we switch it on for the first time It doesn’t seem to get as cold as it did last year? My Air Conditioning is emitting a stale odour? These are common questions we hear every year. The reason is if you don’t use your Air conditioning very often the system will dry up, as the oil within the gas needs to circulate the system to seal all the joints, and if this doesn’t happen the air conditioning gas will escape making the system less effective. It also leads to moisture getting into the system, which can cause 6

an odour in the car, although this can also be caused by other horrible bacteria being in the heating system. This is why most car manufacturers recommend you have your air conditioning serviced every two years to replenish the oils and other liquids used by the system. By having the gas removed and replaced along with the oil, the system should stay sealed, keeping you cool in the times when you most need it. When we service air conditioning we

leaks, and check temperature achieved If it is an odour you are getting from the car ventilation, we can carry our an anti-bacterial clean, this will remove any harmful bacteria that has built up in the ducts and vents in your car, this will remove those unpleasant smells you sometimes get through the vents. As a special offer for all Buckingham In Business readers, we will carry out an air conditioning service on your car for £45, we can deal with most makes of car, just give us a call on 01280 308035 and check we can look after your car.

Hay Fever Help Hay fever season is well and truly underway. Despite its name, hay fever has nothing to do with hay or fever – apparently an early physician called it this because he began sneezing every time he entered a hay barn! In fact, hay fever is a form of allergic rhinitis caused by plant pollen or spores. Alongside inflammation of the nasal lining, the sinuses, throat and eyes are commonly affected. For many, the common symptoms of itchy eyes, a runny or blocked nose, and sneezing are mild. However, for those severely affected by pollen, symptoms can interfere with work or school and exams, and can affect sleep.

8

Commonly used treatments include antihistamine tablets, nasal sprays, and eye drops however, if these aren’t working so well for you this season, here’s a few other ideas to try:

• Qu-Chi Acupressure Band. This band stimulates an acupressure point near the elbow and is said to reduce breathing problems and runny eyes and nose symptoms associated with hayfever.

• Aromatherapy – successful easing of various symptoms is widely reported.

If you rely on over the counter medicines to relieve your hayfever symptoms, you may find that you can get your items for less with a prescription from your doctor. For example, a 60 dose nasal spray costs around £6.50 but you can get a much larger size bottle of the same medicine for the price of a prescription. Ask your pharmacist for more information.

• Use Vaseline on the inside of your nostrils to prevent pollen from entering your nose. • Take a spoonful of locally produced honey every day and eat onions (both believed to help to ward off hay fever). • Acupuncture, reflexology, homeopathy – not proved to relieve hay fever but anecdotal evidence is compelling.

The Garden in July Written by Chris Day Buckingham Garden Centre 01280 822133

Is your garden under attack? If only July were more predictable in the garden. It doesn't matter how wet the spring was, rain can become very elusive in July, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Humidity rises too. July can be one of the wettest and warmest months of the year. So there's no definitive list of gardening chores for the July garden. Gardeners just have to play it by ear. Most importantly, keep a close eye on pests and diseases, then sit back and enjoy your garden and all the efforts you put in earlier in the year to get it where it is now. So, what are the problem pests and diseases we really need to keep an eye on and be perhaps one or two steps ahead? The late spring has certainly helped fuel a number of them, judging by the number of brown paper and polythene bags containing all sorts of animal life arriving into the Garden Centre’s Plant Information Office this past few weeks.

FULLY QUALIFIED AND INSURED TREE CARE AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE

It’s certainly not for the squeamish as we do get to see a whole spectrum of creepy crawlies and some goodies too! On the goodies front, Lichens and Algae covering the stems of trees and shrubs can get people into a right state of panic! These thrive on the damp stems of trees and shrubs, fuelled by our much cleaner atmosphere. We’ve seen something similar occur with incidents of Blackspot on roses. When we had nasty industrial pollution there was no or little Blackspot affecting our beloved roses! A cleaner atmosphere now means rose breeders have to work especially hard to breed Blackspot resistance into our new rose varieties. However, back to lichens and algae, these can look unsightly but they can be controlled to some extent by improving air circulation; so prune out overcrowded branches and cut back any overhanging vegetation. Following this, try to stimulate new growth by root feeding, mulching, watering and applying a foliar feed. However, these Algae and Lichens are a piece of natural beauty, so they should be treated with respect. If you have to prune out stems, just make sure they are completely dead. Now for the baddies, generally those sapsucking pests Greenfly, Blackfly and Whitefly we tend to see infesting the tips of stems. These pests in large numbers will weaken your plants and hinder growth and flowering if allowed to continue unchecked. All are treatable; however you will need to bear in mind what the pest is attacking, for example is it an ornamental or edible plant? Remember this will determine the type of spray you can safely apply. On edibles for the three flies, opt for either Scotts Bug Clear for Fruit & Veg (based on Rapeseed) or Bayer Ultimate Fruit & Vegetables Bug Killer (based Deltamethrin). If the

24

Page 24

flies are hitting your ornamentals then opt for Scotts Bug Clear Ultra, this one not only kills bugs it also prevents further attacks. Not only will Bayer Provado Ultimate Bug Killer control greenfly and whitefly, it also tackles the troublesome Lily beetle as well. If you have box topiary and box hedging hit with white Woolly Aphid (a real problem this season) or Gooseberry Sawfly, this product will tackle them too. To keep your roses blooming and foliage unblemished, there are a couple of products on the market which tackle the three major problems of roses – Aphids, Blackspot and Mildew in one spray – namely Rose Clear Ultra and Bayer Multirose. These can also be used on other ornamentals too, such as Asters, Delphiniums, Lonicera and Lupins. Again, these products should be applied earlier for best preventative treatment; however they do offer some instant control as well. Chemical manufacturers have to be plant specific on the packaging now; as always and as a point of safety, please follow the instructions carefully before applying. Slugs and snails are a real nuisance, especially when they attack your young vulnerable seedlings. There is whole range of organic products on the market, including Fito Slug Stoppa Granules, Bayer Slug Bait and Doff Organic Slug Defence Gel. One organic trick I use is to apply cheap supermarket Bran Flakes long the edge of my raised vegetable beds. The slugs gorge on the bran; it expands in their stomach and finally explodes giving your local bird population the best Fplan diet going, suffice to say its effective! Oh, and crushed eggshells (pictured around newly planted Tomato plants) are reasonably effective too! Blight is a scourge on both Tomatoes and Potatoes causing the leaves and stems to blacken and crops ruined. The key with this disease is preventative spraying from late June onwards. The air bourne spore of Blight enters the leaves and then attacks. The secret is to spray with a protectant fungicide containing copper such as Bayer Fruit and Vegetable Disease Control, to effectively create a metal coating over the foliage to stop the disease from entering the plant. You’ll need to do this regularly, so check carefully how often you can apply. Finally, don’t lose heart when it comes to pests and diseases, keep your plants growing strongly and healthy, by feeding and watering, throughout the growing season will help considerably on how they cope. I love the saying from Dr J. C. Raulston, an American gardener who said whimsically: “If you are not killing plants, you are not really stretching yourself as a gardener.” Nuff said!
