....With Wimbledon fortnight well underway and the World Cup nearing an inevitably exciting conclusion, it's impossible to escape sports of some variety this summer! Getting together to watch these fixtures, perhaps with chilled glass in hand or even the enticing aroma of a barbecue wafting in from the garden, is a lovely way to spend a memorable summer with friends and family. Making time in our busy lives to unwind, be ourselves and create these memories is as essential as eating well - it's nourishment for the soul! Choose some new plants for the garden and everyone can enjoy them, take up a new hobby as a family, perhaps even get the kids involved in a project to enhance your home? Or why not simply switch off your phone, collect a picnic basket and take those that you love for an afternoon in the countryside - a sunny day, pleasant surroundings and good company..........now that's my idea of heaven! Until next time...

Red cars top the drop zone league It may leave motorists seeing red, but it seems that the colour of your car is responsible for how attractive it is to birds. Bright red cars are a magnet for more bird droppings than vehicles of any other colour while green cars are most likely to escape from the unwelcome attentions of our feathery friends. A study recorded the frequency that birds left their mark on cars in five cities around the UK and found green cars suffer least, followed by silver, while white vehicles escaped more often than black in analysis of 1,140 cars in Brighton, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Bristol. Drivers were also asked how quickly they removed the offending evidence. Only 17% - one in six - wipe off deposits as soon as they spot them, 20% take action within a couple of days while 55% wait until the next wash. The remaining eight per cent never wash their cars or leave it to someone else. But as well as being unsightly, insurance industry figures show bird droppings can be an expensive problem and estimate the damage caused by poop-stained paintwork costs motorists ÂŁ57m a year in unnecessary repairs. A car cleaning expert says: "This research does have a serious side because the problem annoys drivers, causes damaged paintwork and affects the value of vehicles. To protect your bodywork from damage, droppings should be carefully cleaned off as soon as possible."

More Of Us Find Love Online Over the past decade, online dating has gone from being something that was frowned upon or considered a little kooky or even dangerous, to something that most people think is a normal way to meet a partner, In fact, a recent survey by the Oxford Internet Institute reveals that over a third of us have tried online dating, with users in their 40s and above being the most likely to have signed up to a dating website. For women in particular, the attractions of online dating often revolve around security issues and intentional dating rather than leaving things to chance. Whereas younger people are more likely to take an attitude of "I'll meet someone at some point", older people are far more focused on finding a partner by actively going out and looking, rather than passively waiting for a potential mate to appear in their life. The rise of online dating in the UK appears a trend which is likely to continue over the next few years, as more and more people meet their partners through this medium and success stories continue to come out. Brand new dating website Love is Dating has just launched with the aim of bringing together more UK couples. Spokewoman Karen Barr says "Ten years ago, if you told someone that you met your partner online, you would often be the recipient of a shocked look or some rather prurient questions. "But as the internet has become so much more a part of people's lives, internet dating has lost that
sort of nerdy or seedy aura that it used to have and is now accepted as a very efficient and safe way to meet potential partners. "In another 10 years' time we might all be asking not 'How did you meet?' but 'What site did you meet on?' We believe the right relationship makes you happy. And everyone needs a little happiness in their lives." But there's no point in joining an online dating site if you aren't proactive. It's no good putting together the perfect profile and then sitting waiting for the emails to come flooding in. If you want to get back in the dating game, you have to email the people who you find attractive. Don't worry if they don't reply there are plenty more fish in the virtual sea. It's also important to tailor your email. A generic copy and paste job can be detected a mile off and is pretty insulting. Put a bit of time
in and make it personal - it's much more likely to pay off. But remember not to tell them your life story! At this stage it's advisable not to mention your ex - it's a sure sign that you're still focused on a past relationship. Use that first email as a chance to spark their curiosity. Keep it clean, polite and to the point - and throw in a little humour if possible. It is supposed to be fun!

A healthy break We all know that eating your greens, drinking plenty of water and taking regular exercise are good for us. But did you know that your daily coffee break at work could be doing your health more good than you realise? If so then you're not alone as the latest market research suggests that current perceptions about coffee in the UK are completely off the boil. But the truth is that your regular cup of coffee can count as part of your daily fluid intake and can help protect you against an array of diseases. There are many misconceptions about coffee. For example, 61 per cent of us don't even realise that it can count toward our daily fluid intake. Its health benefits are also unknown, as 84 per cent of us don't know that coffee consumption has been shown to protect against cognitive decline and certain other neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Not only this but coffee may protect against the development of type-two diabetes and 74 per cent of us have no idea. GP at Richford Gate Medical Practice Dr Sarah Jarvis says: "We need to be aware that there are many misconceptions about coffee that are simply not true. There is strong scientific evidence to suggest that moderate coffee consumption (four to five cups per day) may confer a variety of health benefits and should be enjoyed when we take our breaks in the day."

As well as being enjoyable, and safe in moderation, caffeine can increase your levels of alertness, helping you to stay on top form when you are at your desk or in that all-important meeting. Going for that well earned coffee break should be part of our daily routine, yet, 63 per cent of us have tried to reduce the number of cups we drink each day because of myths about coffee. The main ones are outlined below. Top Coffee Myths Coffee is an addictive drug? Three out of four coffee drinkers have tried to reduce the number of cups of coffee consumed each day because they think coffee is addictive. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim when coffee is consumed in moderation Coffee dehydrates you? Over 50 per cent of coffee drinkers have tried to reduce their number of daily cups because they think coffee is dehydrating. Scientific evidence shows that a cup of coffee will contribute to your daily fluid intake so enjoy your coffee without feeling guilty!

Fragrant plants vary considerably in the amount of fragrance they produce so you need to bear this in mind when deciding which plants to choose and where to plant them. Often, plants described as ‘scented’ have a very slight odour that, although pleasant enough, is barely perceptible once planted in the garden. However, plants with an appealing delicate fragrance are worth giving a go if they produce a lot of blooms. The sweetly scented, early flowering Clematis armandii and summer-flowering Clematis flammula are two good examples, as is spicy Dianthus that makes a great patio edging and container plant. On the other hand, some plants renowned for having a powerful fragrance, such as Mock Orange (Philadelphus) and Lilium regale, are so potent that they can overpower a seating area with fragrance when in full bloom, so they are best sited further down the garden to allow only well-diluted wafts to reach the patio. The appreciation of fragrance is also very individual, so that what appeals to one person may smell awful to another. Therefore, the golden rule when choosing fragrant plants is to sniff them
in flower before you buy. Best of all, fragrance is not only about the flowers. Plants with aromatic leaves are particularly suitable for planting in patio suntraps - in fact it’s the only place you will really appreciate their full potential. Opt for plants such as Lavender (English and French), scented Pelargoniums (Lemon, Orange and even Cola scented!) and most herbs, release heavy scent molecules that slowly evaporate from the plants’ foliage. So, the warmer and more sheltered the patio, the greater the scent produced. Plant them to cascade over the edges of the paving where the foliage will be brushed or lightly crushed underfoot to release even more fragrance. Some low-growing herbs, such as Thyme and Chamomile, can be used as fragrant fillers between cracks in the patio, too. So, how do you achieve a fragrant patio we hear you ask? Make the most of fragrant flowers by planting a combination of scents you really like – so visit the Garden Centre and sniff out the best fragrances. It is also worth taking into consideration the flowering times of each plant, so that you can orchestrate a succession of scents throughout the summer. The

height of release is also worth bearing in mind. For example, fragrant climbing roses and honeysuckles scrambling over a trellis or a wall at the back of a patio will release their fragrance at nose level as you walk past, while aromatic herbs are best planted between paving stones where you are most likely to lay on a lounger in the sun with your nose close to the ground, or trample them in passing. Some plants, such as Sweet Rocket (Hesperis matronalis), Night-Scented Stock (Matthiola bicornis) and Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis), produce their best fragrance in the evening to attract night-flying insects, including certain moths, that pollinate their flowers. Planting one or more of these in a border next to a patio will add a new dimension to summer evenings and alfresco dining. As a finishing touch, grow one of the headily scrumptiously fragrant Lilium regale in a pot to add scent even on breezy days they can always be moved further down the garden if their powerful fragrance becomes overpowering during still conditions. If planting to cover an arbour or pergola, keep these three types of clematis on your wish list – C. Aromatica, C. viticella ‘Betty Corning’ (pictured with Rose ‘Compassion’) and C. Flammula. Make sure you plant at least one of these next to your favourite climbing rose to help extend the fragrance season. These clematis should provide some welcome blooms between the flushes of the roses through the summer.
