Tips

for a stress-free road trip with kids

With a tight economy, many families will opt to hit the roads this summer instead of flying, but driving with kids can be especially challenging. Admit it: taking a long car trip with kids can drive you crazy. “Are we there, yet?” “I’m bored.” “He’s picking on me.” “I’m hungry.” And the list goes on. But with proper planning, the ride can be fun and relatively painless for all. Consider following a few important tips. 1. Service your car. There is nothing worse than setting off on a road trip and breaking down along the way—especially on a hot day with kids in tow. Get your car checked out before you take off. Make sure fluids are topped off and tires properly inflated or purchase new tires if they are worn out. 2. Plan properly. Before you even get in the car, plan your destination and route. A portable GPS device or smart phone navigation app can help guide you to your vacation spot, but it may be worth having a paper map as backup. Try to drive during off-peak hours to avoid traffic or other delays. 3. Check your car seats. As many as 80 percent of car seats may not be properly installed. Also, have your seat inspected to make sure it’s safe. Children should be seated in a proper car seat based on their height and weight and those under 2 should stay rear facing. Also, make sure all children under 13 ride in the backseat.

How to Celebrate Father's Day 15th June 2014

Father's Day has been celebrated for over 100 years. It's also an event celebrated in many countries around the world, although at different times of the year. In North America and the United Kingdom, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Help dad enjoy the day. Perhaps you'll let him sleep-in this morning, or perhaps you won't badger him to be somewhere on time, for a change. Whatever it is, let it be his day. Some nice ways to start it include: •Making him breakfast in bed •Bringing him the newspaper to read in bed •Making his favourite pot of coffee •Make it a family event. Father's Day is by nature a family event. Use this opportunity to get everyone in the family together for a fun day. Think about including all the dads in your family, not just your own father. Could your celebration include husbands, would-be future dads, your uncles, and brothers? If so, do it—the more the merrier! And don't forget step-fathers—they're important too. You don't have to remain at home; you could go to the beach, a local park, a favorite spot of dad's! Consider building the celebration around an activity you all can enjoy. Some ideas include: • Having a family picnic • Enjoying a family barbecue • Taking dad to a favorite sporting event • Go fishing together • Go plane spotting or train spotting together • Play golf together.

Be creative. When it comes to making gifts for Father's Day, perhaps steer clear of the traditional store-bought gifts of tie and socks. He's probably still got last year's socks stuffed at the back of the drawer. Expensive or typical gifts are not necessary, but the time and effort you put in to create a personalized tribute, will be deeply appreciated. Instead, let your own creative abilities shine and make him something special: • Bake a cake • Make his favorite dinner • Make a gift basket and fill it with homemade candies, cookies, crossword or other puzzles you've created yourself, hand-crafted woodwork objects, etc. • If you're artistically inclined, draw or paint a portrait of your dad from a favorite photo or from memory • Write a poem • Write a song and perform it. Acknowledge the importance of fatherhood. Being a father is a tough job. Dads are responsible for at least one half of the financial and emotional well-being of the family. A thoughtful card, a letter, or short speech that expresses your love will benefit both you and your dad. Giving dad a heartfelt speech, toast, or card of genuine, loving words at the dinner table, or at some other point when all the family are around (siblings especially), will make this a poignant occasion.

The Garden in June

Our Summer Festival of Fun We hope you can come along and join us over the weekend of the 28th and 29th June for our Summer Festival. We will be delighted to welcome not one but two TV gardening personalities over the weekend of the 28th & 29th June. For our younger audience Chris Collins, the Blue Peter gardener, is Chris Collins instantly recognisable with his unique blend of advice and wisdom. He will be with us from 10am-5pm for advice and answering your gardening questions, judging a local school ‘Garden in a seed tray competition’ as well as a book signing session too. On the Sunday, we will be delighted to welcome BBC’s The One Show gardener, Christine Walkden from 10am-3pm. Christine will be giving

some instructive and practical talks, taking a Questions & Answers session, signing books as well as offering great advice in her bubbly Phil Banks manner. There will be plenty of other entertainment - magic shows on Saturday and close-up magic on Sunday with Phil Banks (pictured), facepainting, Tingewick & Water Stratford Horticultural Society celebrating 90 Years, local food produce and much more. The Garden Centre is located on the A421 one mile beyond Buckingham if you are driving from Milton Keyes or Aylesbury. Our address is Tingewick Road, Buckingham, MK18 4AE. You can find out more about our weekend on our website www.buckinghamgardencentre.co.uk and on our www.facebook.com/BuckinghamNurseries

The Garden in June Time for action and to enjoy your garden After one of the best springs in years, there’s so much still to be done, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. As the glorious spring moves seamlessly into early summer, we cannot rest on our laurels as we need to keep our gardens looking fresh, colourful, and productive. Don’t they say you should have “To Do” lists? Well, if you have one that’s as long as your arm I suspect you are not going to be on your own! Priorities swap and change at this busy time of the year but they should include weeding, feeding, planting, sowing and deadheading, the rest can wait! The mild winter has seen a great increase of slug and snail populations and a recent report suggests a fifth of us throw slugs and snails over our neighbour’s fence, so we just might be kept a tad busier

this year! A Royal Horticultural Society study suggests that snails have a strong homing instinct of over a distance of 30ft and that some returned from as far as 300ft! Protecting newly planted and vulnerable plants must be a priority and whatever control you opt for think carefully on all levels. Good organic options are proving popular this season, including Vitax Slug Gone wool pellets, Copper Tape and Sluggo Slug & Snail Killer, all perfect options if the environment and pets are a concern. The luxuriant weed growth has been spectacular... just look at the Cow Parsley along the verges, the Dandelions and the Buttercups! Pernicious weeds such as Ground Elder, Bindweed and Hairy Bittercress are in overdrive at the moment. These are perennial so the entire root needs to be lifted without leaving behind any small pieces of the root. When tackling these it needs to be done with care as they tend to pop up

through existing beds and borders, often next to your prized plants! You can spot treat perennial and annual weeds with the likes of Round Up Weedkiller Gel, however, whatever Round Up (the active ingredient is Glyphosate) touches will die, so extra care is needed. Bindweed, being a climber is best allowed to grow up a framework, say a cane wigwam, before applying the weedkiller to the plant framework. The larger expanse of foliage usually results in a better “kill” of the roots. Of course, keeping the good old hoe moving between the rows and the plants will certainly keep on top of annual weeds, perhaps less effective on the perennial ones though.

Do keep the sowing going on the vegetable plot and raised beds. Continuity is the buzz word for the next few months as successional sowing will help ensure you can harvest fast maturing salad crops on “a little and often basis”. Remember as crops mature and are harvested the vacated space will require re-stocking – either from young Garden Centre plug plants or perhaps a short row sowings of Lettuce, Mixed Salad Leaves, Spring Onion, Radish or Rocket to name just but a few. I like to sow (pictured) mixed Lettuce leaves in a shallow container for fast pickings through the summer months. Now that the fear of late frosts has passed (we hope) complete your tender vegetable plantings of Marrows/Courgette, outdoor Tomatoes, Runner Beans, Pumpkins and

Sweet Lupins Corn in well-prepared soil. If you have been busy setting up your pots and baskets for the summer, remember they will require regular water from now on, sometimes twice a day on very warm or breezy days. Commence feeding from the end of the June then continue every 7-10 days if possible. You can always sprinkle some slow-release fertiliser such as Osmocote around the plants, which will ‘drip feed the plants with nutrients over a 6 month period. However, good old Tomorite fertiliser is often the best choice as its high potash content ensures plenty of flowers as well as strong and healthy foliage. This year many of our popular garden plants have flowered around 2-3 weeks earlier than usual and you may have a few gaps in need of filling as a result. Good value perennials such as Asters, Foxgloves, Lupins (pictured above),

Rudbeckia and Heuchera, are useful gap-fillers and will flower quickly this summer and if you are savvy with your plant choice well into the autumn. If you are planting, it might be worth improving the planting area with some Westland Gro-Sure Planting Magic. This newly introduced 4 in 1 product provides 6 months of nutrients, some water controlling granules, soil improvement and root building too, perfect to help your plants get away! Finally as the weather improves, it’s a good opportunity to look at your entertainment area in the garden. Patios can become jaded so perk them up with some colourful containers and accessories. New solar lights, a teak oil treatment to the hardwood table and chairs or a simple patio jet wash, using a patio cleaner, can make all the difference. Whatever the weather, do enjoy your garden this June.

Here’s a perfect opportunity to give your garden a much deserved mini makeover or project this summer by winning our easy-to-enter competition. To enter simply answer the question and TWO lucky readers will have a chance to win a Buckingham Garden Centre Gift Voucher, worth £25, perfect for those new plants or seed purchases!
