Have printed books had their day? Recently I sold off some of the books outgrown by my children. Some were true modern classics and I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should box them up to give to my future grandchildren! It occurred to me then that printed books might not be so relevant to the next generation. It may be that children’s books will only be read on digital devices like the iPad or Kindle (albeit, much whizzier versions!)? Maybe, those children won’t have to read at all… could information be downloaded (or is it uploaded?) to their brains by some new fangled gadget?! It might seem a ridiculous idea but perhaps it’s possible - vinyl was replaced by music CDs but the rise of the mp3 player has made those almost obsolete! Vinyl is now quite simply a collectors’ item – is this the future of the printed book? As more readers have turned from printed to digital books, the physical book trade has declined dramatically. Amazon states that sales of e-books have overtaken their sales of printed books. It seems significant that the website’s best selling product is its Kindle.
12
Of course, there are some fantastic benefits to digital books. An e-reader can hold thousands of books in its memory. Most houses would struggle to do the same. An e-reader gives access to a large number of free books. But then so does a library. An e-reader is supremely portable. But then so are many books (and their batteries won’t run out!). The newly opened avenues for digital self publishing has made many an aspiring writer’s dream come true and there are some real gems – three out of the top
ten authors on Amazon’s e-book sales chart last year were self publishers. Could printed books disappear entirely? Somehow it seems unlikely. There is something about a book that the e-readers and tablets just haven’t been able to match. Perhaps the texture? The smell? I’m not sure. But I am sure that the fate of printed books is in the hands of the consumer. If you stop buying books from our local bookshop and stop visiting the local library, the result doesn’t take much effort to predict. Does that matter? That’s for you to decide! Written by Jen Oakton

The Garden in MARCH Time to get growing wherever you garden Years ago I remember Amateur Gardening, the popular weekly magazine, used to give specific advice for gardeners depending where they lived, so The North, The Midlands (this was always written by Percy Thrower) and The South were given advice applicable to their geographical location. Goodness, how times have changed. I don’t think it’s a simple case of global warming or climate change, I think we all realise that the UK is now a dynamic micro-climate with frost pockets, exposed expanses, sheltered nooks and sub-tropical paradises, and that’s just in Maids Moreton! So, when I heard that the popular Scottish TV gardening programme, The Beechgrove Garden, (the presenters pictured right) which has been going for 35 years north of the border, is about to join network

mainstream television, this put a smile on my face. This is the first time the programme has been shown in the south and it will be aired on Sunday mornings on BBC2. Interestingly, this is first time I’ve known two
gardening programmes to be shown on the BBC at any one time, so watch out Monty Don, who gardens in Herefordshire, on Gardeners’ World,

you’ve got some welcome competition! As we enter the first official month of spring, how do we prioritise our garden tasks in March? Well, let’s start with crocus and narcissi bulbs, those pushing through will need our admiration and focus as they give us boundless pleasure and compared to those which need our immediate attention for this summer. You can get planting the likes of lilies and gladioli right now, holding back a while before planting and establishing dahlia tubers. We appear to be embracing the dahlia once again; certainly they’ve re-invented themselves as they make versatile plants for borders, containers and even for cutflower growing. We’ve got to thank UK growers who have given us some amazing colours, compactness in habit and reliability; hence we’re hooked on growing them again. Dahlias can be started indoors, in good light and then hardened off in May, or simply prepare the soil well where they are to flower and plant them directly into this adding some RootGrow and Vitax Q4 fertiliser as you plant. Set them just below the soil and they should be through in 4-6 weeks. Offer some fleece protection if they emerge too soon, otherwise late frosts are liable to damage the emerging shoots.
The next task is really simple – sprinkle some granular fertiliser around all your shrubs, roses and perennial plants. Opt for Blood, Fish and Bone if you practise organic gardening or Vitax Q4 if you don’t. Check the amount to apply on the packaging. Effective feeding is all about timing, and after last year’s deluge of rain and this winter’s snow, it is essential to put back those lost washed out nutrients. If your soil is especially leached of goodness and your evergreen plants are looking yellowy, apply an organic mulch of compost, wellrotted manure or mushroom compost and this will work wonders. Remember keeping your plants fed will also benefit their health too. This is essential for fruit trees and bushes as well, so don’t forget to feed these too! Whilst in the flower garden, if you haven’t already, give your butterfly (buddleja) bushes a prune back to 12-18in (30-45cm) from soil level. This may look severe, yet it will stimulate new growth

The Garden in MARCH resulting in much longer arching flowers throughout the summer. The same mantra can be applied to coloured stemmed dogwoods and willows; here you can prune them down to 4-6in (1015cm), to help build up strong stems for next winter’s stem show. If you like sweet peas then you really need to think about sowing them this month. Sow them in multi-purpose compost in single pots (the biodegradable Fyba pots are really useful) or in Roottrainers, where the long tap root can grow unrestricted. You can pre-soak the sweet pea seeds overnight to help germination; however, don’t give the seeds too much heat, just gentle heat and plenty of good light to help encourage sturdy growth. Elsewhere in the garden, give the lawn its first cut (setting the blades at a high setting to avoid
scalping). Don’t forget to trim the edges and make repairs, which may include overseeding if you have any bare/thin patches. To make it really easy, there are plenty of lawn repair kits on the market, many of them include the seed as well as fertiliser. It’s still too early to be thinking about tender greenhouse crops; however you can get hardy crops sown including cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, spinach, lettuce, broad beans, peas and turnips. Don’t forget onions, shallots and garlic, too as these are now available as small bulbs. Continue chitting potatoes; April is early enough to think about planting in the open ground, however if you are raising your spuds in bags and pots, plant earlies over the next few weeks, protecting the emerging shoots by adding compost (“earthing-up”) or cover with fleece to keep the frost at bay.

Finally, if you are embarking on slug-free hostas by growing your favourite perennials in pots, now is the best time to add copper tape to the containers to help keep those unwanted slimy visitors from your plants. You could also top-dress the compost with some fine grit or slate, another useful slug-busting tactic. TOP TIP If you are growing agapanthus in pots, now is the perfect time to re-pot them into some fresh compost. If the plant is pot-bound, carefully knock out of the pot, remove 20% of the old existing compost and then place the plant back into the same size pot but add new gritty compost. A good mix is 80% John Innes Compost No3 and 20% Horticultural Grit, with good drainage at the base of the pot. Start feeding with Tomorite, yes that’s right tomato feed, from May onwards to help encourage those spectacular flowering stems to develop.
